Tomorrow is 9/25 - Celebrate Dolly Parton Day

'Dolly Parton Day' to be celebrated in Nashville and in California on September 25, aka 9/25

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed off a state bill to officially recognise September 25, aka 9/25, as a day to celebrate the life, music, philanthropy and legacy of Dolly Parton.
The bill to honour the late late country legend was co-authored by Democratic Senator John Laird, and by Republican Senator Shannon Grove.
"Dolly Parton sparkled on every stage she ever stood on," the pair said in a joint statement, "but her brightest sparkle was the literacy legacy she built through the Imagination Library.

The city of Nashville has also declared September 25 as Dolly Parton Day, and has scheduled a day of celebratory events. Other US cities are also planning celebrations.

Local farm honors Dolly Parton with sunflower field design open to public

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A local farm is honoring Dolly Parton with a larger-than-life tribute carved into a sunflower field.
Burwinkel Farms has cut a design into its sunflower field featuring Parton’s name, a guitar, titles of her popular songs, and a heart. Bob Burwinkel created the design using only a lawnmower.

Asteroid Will Hereafter Be Known as 'Alyankovic'

"Weird Al" Yankovic has joined a new club: that of iconic musicians granted astronomical immortality. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has approved an asteroid designation honoring the parody singer known for songs including "Yoda" and "Slime Creatures from Outer Space," Space.com reports. Previously identified as 14331, a mile-wide space rock discovered in 1981 in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter will hereafter be known as Alyankovic. Planetary scientist Allison McGraw led the push for the name and surprised Yankovic with a commemorative plaque backstage before his show in Tucson on Sunday, the Arizona Daily Star reports.

Psilocybin may help the brain recover from concussion, new study shows

A concussion is often described as a “mild” traumatic brain injury. Yet repeated blows to the head rarely feel mild and the impacts — including changes in movement, memory, mood and brain function — may last for months or years.
Athletes, military personnel, people involved in vehicle collisions, older adults who experience falls and people experiencing intimate partner violence are all especially susceptible to repeated head injuries. And these are associated with an increased risk of neurodegenerative conditions, including chronic traumatic encephalopathy and Parkinson’s disease.
There is no approved drug that repairs the underlying brain damage from concussions. This therapeutic gap has prompted interest in an unconventional candidate: psilocybin, the psychoactive compound found in “magic mushrooms.”

12 The vintage football game footage is oddly compelling. We look at low scoring games, but there is a lot of physicality and also a lot less rules about breaking up passes. Receivers have to be truly wide open, which is why grinding it on the ground was so popular.

Our running joke was " the Jesuits decided they needed a parking lot more than they needed school spirit," but we were young and dumb and didn't know how expensive a football program was, if you weren't a big school drawing hundreds of thousands.

Ironically, the parking lot got torn up, and now it's a soccer stadium.

And the nuns at Mercy, who managed their money competently, bailed out the Jesuits, who didn't. So now its a hyphenated school.

There is a car in our neighborhood with one of those virtue signally stickers. One of the "virtues" is "women's rights are human rights." What, exactly constitute these "women's rights" that women do not already enjoy today? The only thing I can think of is the right to k*ll their baby/child whenever they want, and IMHO, that would seem to interfere with the human right of that baby/child. I could be wrong, and it's something else, but I've never felt like I didn't have the same rights as my husband.

If the Sabes are in fact offering the Beer Sabre at EVERY GAME, I'll make it happen.

There is still some debate as to whether the organization will commit to having them available for purchase at every game.

Last year they only offered them at two ... maybe three games.

As I'm not a season ticket holder, I only get to 3 or 4 games in person. So they need to be available all season long for me to make it happen ... but if they do, I will!

I lost about 20 minutes. Was on my bike after an overnight shift at the Safeway, and got hit by a car. In my defense the traffic light signal had abruptly change, and I had no clue of this change.

I woke up in an ambulance. EMT told me I was trying to get back on my bike, which had been bent in half, muttering "I gotta get home, I gotta get home."

I hate that there is a blank spot in my memory.

My youngest was treated with high dose creatine after his back to back concussions while in college.

Back when I was still on dialysis, I'd be driving and suddenly realize I was far from where I thought I was...I'd lost some time. I was "conscious", but just didn't have a memory of how I got from point A to point B...happened a few times...a bit disconcerting.

The box was stolen while he was gone.

It was found sitting on the sidewalk a couple of blocks away. I still amuse myself by imagining what the thief's face must've looked like when he realized what he had.

No. Shoes were intact. Kind of a miracle that car did not hit me, just the rear wheel of my bike. My only injuries were asphalt chunks in my knees, a slight concussion, and that super achy muscle pain that happens when your body braces for impact.

At least the nurse debriding my knee pebbles was cute.

She came to in the hospital, and realized her jaw was dislocated, and was pissed at what the driver had done to her jaw...while the doctors were still looking her over...

Anesthesia does that...wipes out your short term memory. I know I saw more than what I remember from each surgery or procedure, but that memory is poof!, gone.

168 I've mentioned it before RandomDave but the Census Bureau is hiring. They are absolutely hounding me to come back for another round. The early hires stay thru the actual upcoming census so it's a long term gig if so desired.
The goverment pay is awesome and the expectations are... minimal in my experience.

I know a guy who retired from the state and went to work for the census bureau, and worked year round because he was one of the hires that actually would work, and ask for more. There is some overhead like driving your own car, but he went out in the boonies to talk to people.
He finally retired from that as well, because he in now in his early 70's

Some small asteroids are basically just rubble piles. They have a very small gravity field which just barely holds them together.

Those "contact binaries" were likely two smaller ones orbiting each that slowly spiraled in. The relative velocity of impact was so low they basically just sort of stuck together.

We had one in a bio class in HS...the things they did to that poor skeleton. We dissected crayfish...next class, there was a crayfish in its mouth. Later someone took one of the large erasers, put it in the skeleton's crotch, and had both its hands holding the eraser. The teacher was FURIOUS and threatened to give us all detention if she didn't find out who did it...

Hipparchus (Ancient Greek Homo, of some repute) most likely saw Uranus and thought it was a star. Flamsteed saw it several times, and thought it was star which he named 34 Tauri.

And Galileo likely spotted Neptune in his telescope in Dec and Jan of 1612 and 1613. He noted it seemed to have moved, but didn't follow up on it at all.

And William Herschel's son observed Neptune in 1830, but thought it was a star.
