It is supposedly better on coding tasks on high settings than Claude Fable on max settings while working out to about one fifth the cost.

I'll try it and see. I had some really bad results with Opus 5 on a non-coding task today which was a strong reminder not to do that.

28 I have been reading the scraps of news and watching the YouTube commentary about GoogleBooks. The consensus is nobody has an idea who they're for, they're way too expensive, and due to a lack of PC caliber apps such as the Adobe creative suite these things are going to fail miserably in a manner that would be very familiar to Windows phone fanatics from about a decade ago.

I did come across one fellow who reviews Android tablets who is excited about the GoogleBooks. His enthusiasm was centered around it's not Apple, it's not Microsoft, will run all his favorite Android apps, and comes with a dedicated keyboard. So there you go, based on this one commentary, the market for GoogleBooks is for people who use Android tablets exclusively and are looking to upgrade to something with a dedicated keyboard.

Watched part of The Leopard, with Burt Lancaster and Claudia Cardinale (yum!), last night. The book on which it is based is so excellent I overcame my usual aversion to movies in order to get an idea of the landscapes, towns and palaces in which the story is set.

The movie so far is remarkably faithful to the book, though I understand it ends after the ball, omitting the final two chapters, the death of Don Fabrizio and the final collapse of Concetta's illusions.

Not really. What I have noticed is that the thyroid levels are noticeably lower than other dogs. And the temper part I mentioned seems to happen to larger boys (At least two of the ones that we've owned.).

52 The time traveler argument is that if time travel will ever exist, it would have already existed for all time, so we'd already have it and not be having any argument about it at all.

The Fermi Paradox conflates that form of argument with something that isn't time travel. It just assumes that enough time has passed for something like a universe spanning empire to have already developed. Maybe it has, maybe it hasn't. Nobody knows the gestation period of universe spanning empires. So it's not really a paradox, just an assumption with a cosmic-scale lack of information.

To further conflate the question of if consciousness is algorithmic with those two ideas is the rhetorical equivalent of kicking a cue ball through the uprights and sliding into second base for the checkered flag. Fun to watch, but.... I don't think your team is going to get many sponsors.

battery in my Dell laptop went bad. Poor management by me. Order new battery from Dell, it arrives, I follow the on-screen instructions, swap it out myself. Now laptop only works when plugged in. BIOS sees the new battery. Battery Report shows the new battery. Battery icon in taskbar shows battery charging, currently 28%. Been that way for days. Battery is not charging or powering the laptop. It's a real head-scratcher.

That can be indicative of a bad AC adapter. I had a similar problem with an HP laptop from the Win 7 era. It would get in a state where it could power the laptop but not charge the battery. The laptop was largely retired before it became a pressing issue and I was traveling for work far less, so I let it go in favor of a new laptop when a good deal came along.

That was a Dell model with some unusual features that made it unlike most similar products. Dell used the same board and case for a wide variety of configurations and almost nothing was soldered. Walmart was selling it in a minimal configuration for a bit over $300. (First gen Ryzen APU) So I could upgrade the screen from 720p-ish to a full 1080p for about $70, though doing the install was a bit nerve wracking for my limited skill level. Upgrading the RAM was trivial, and it had an unused PCIe M.2 slot! So I pulled the 500GB hard drive, and put in a 1TB M.2 SSD and a 1TB SATA SSD. So it became a fairly loaded package for about $600. It can't run Windows 11 but it's more for entertainment and light MS Office use than anything really demanding. Does pretty well with the sorts of console-ish games I like.
