Google's new Googlebooks are here, powered by Googlebook OS, with models starting at $899 from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, and here are all the hardware specs which I know are the only thing you'll be interested in. (WCCFTech)

Powered by the all new Googlebook OS, which they didn't bother to cover at all because Google announced it yesterday. On Reddit. (Reddit)

There's also a home page on Google itself which contains less than no information.

Except for Australian prices - it's region-sensitive - which are fuck-off-expensive.

Anyway, Googlebook OS is Android which is Linux, in this case Debian under the hood, updated with a user interface that doesn't look like a Subaru that hasn't been washed for forty years.
Here's the Acer model which is the cheapest of the bunch and doesn't get a mention on the Australian version of the Googlebook home page. (Notebook Check)

Pretty good hardware specs especially the 2880x1600 120Hz 14" OLED panel. But I got a laptop with one of those six months ago, with twice the memory and storage, and cheaper too.
Can you just download - or even buy - and install Googlebook OS on your own hardware?

Apple's new M5 Ultra Mac Studio outperforms even a 64 core AMD Threadripper until you run anything other than Geekbench 7 whereupon it immediately doesn't. (Tom's Hardware)

I'm not saying it's bad. I'm just saying it's annoying to watch idiots trumpet its speed based on one obviously broken benchmark. At least Tom's Hardware ran one realistic multicore benchmark which immediately left the Mac Studio face down in the dirt - slower even than Intel's miserable workstation offerings - but they didn't bother to put that in the headline.

16 The GoogleBooks feature a rainbow LED on the lid that does something. Apparently it's supposed to do more but Google forgot to complete the API so developers can write code so it does something besides blink. I give these a couple years before the only GoogleBooks that will exist will be plastic ones on a shelf in the hallway to the bathrooms at Best Buy. That or will be buried as landfill in the Google graveyard.

27 Acer says the Googlebook 14 can be equipped with up to 32 GB LPDDR5X memory and up to 512 GB of NVMe storage, though the 16 GB + 512 GB configuration seems to be the only option for now.

You can't even get a SSD with more than 512GB, apparently.
That's how they made a 14" laptop with an OLED and still keep the price at $899.

If they went up to 1TB the laptop would be $1049.

They weren't making enough money with Chromebooks, and then Apple dropped the Neo and blew them away, so now they're only move is take the Microsoft route and start making their own hardware beyond smartphones and Google TV.

Unfortunately for Google the vast majority of people on this planet don't trust them and don't think of them as a hardware company anyhow. Their only buyers are tech addicts who don't want to deal with Apple or Microsoft or Samsung.

32 Good morning. all!

Had such a nice day yesterday. Today is our anniversary, ( We got married in the previous century) but since spouse had the day off yesterday we went to a lovely little town about an hour away. Many of the houses date from the 1800's. Most of the shops were closed but we went to pet boutique, the biscotti bakery and the a place with antiques. There was a man there finishing old furniture there and I got a pair of antique earrings. We had very nice conservations with the shop owners!

A highlight of the time was stoping at a church which was originally founded in the 1700's but was redone in the 1800's. I liked the outside. The pastor's wife ( they live next door in the parsonage) saw us and invited us to see the inside of the church and her husband was inside . What a beautiful church and we had such a nice talk ! Thanks, God!

39 My favorite Google hardware failure was the Nexus Q that was released in 2012 and lasted about month before was killed off.

Google made two fundamental errors with the Nexus Q. The first was the Google engineers were macro-dosing LSD while under specifying the device. They also overlooked that they were releasing a product into a well defined market space that had formidable entrenched competitors such as Apple, Sony, Roku and so on. Essentially nobody knew what the hell this thing was supposed to do.

On the plus side it came in the shape of a plastic softball ball that had a LED that spanned the equator of the ball and lit up when something happened, sort of like the LED on GoogleBooks.

Well, let's look at the cost by the general price of it's compnoents.

256gb of ddr5 will run yo anywhere fron 7-10k, depending on the manufacturer.

A 4tb nvme will run you 600 dollars.

Comping the video card is hard as you would require a 100k nvida dgx station to be able to have 256gb of video ram on the GPU bucause of apples unified memory architecture, but for the sake of comping we will use 2 spark cards at 5k a pop for a 10k total there.

And for th cpu the closes comp is a AMD thread ripper which comes in at 5k.

So, that Apple M5 Ultra is a bargain.

Throw in the fact you are getting a Unix/Linux OS and a pretty compact computer and there is nothing that is a price competitive as any mac right now laptop, desktop or mini.

52 A semi-nightmare just before I woke up: I was working again as a package delivery driver. First day back, and it was raining lightly, so traffic was choked. I had forgotten a rain jacket and cap, too. My first stop was a new apartment and shopping development in a western suburb, a place that hadn't existed when I had that route in the mid-'80s. Each building had its own address on the avenue, then apartment numbers within that building . . . and all the buildings were numbers like 1700 or 1800, whereas my packages were for 2300 and 2600. I couldn't find a map of the development or an office, and nobody I spoke to had any idea where the 2000s began. And these were only my first stops for the day.

On the other hand, it looked like the ideal of a "walkable" community: apartments, coffee shops and bakeries, grocery stores, other service businesses. And not everybody there was retirement age, either. Sort of like a big mall with living spaces attached.

One data point that confirms this. The 15-in M5 MacBook Air (16 GB, 1 TB) is $2200. The 15-in X2 Elite Surface Laptop (16 GB, 1 TB) is $2400. Setting aside personal software ecosystem preferences these two laptops are roughly equivalent in capability and build quality. I never thought I would see MacBooks be the value leader but here we are.

Setting aside the dollar factor, the main reason I have liked apple over the long term is that the essential look, feel and operation has not changed much over the last 40 years.

They change things very slowly and at the margins, but for the most part if you look at System 1 and say Tahoe, other than more graphics polish, they look the same.

58 My 2014 MacBook Air froze when I first opened it up, then rebooted itself. Everything is fine now. Since the Mac so rarely fails or has a bobble of any kind, it's startling.

I should go to that "used but refurbished Macs" site -- what is its name again? -- and pick up a newer laptop with more memory, and maybe a newer desktop with the same.

The UI has changed a lot since 1986. (So has everyone else's, so maybe that's why you didn't notice it.)

I'd been using a MacBook (provided by work) since 2015. (Past tense since they laid me off last Friday; shipped the laptop to them yesterday.) It was OK; I can use them, but I would never buy one and run their OS.

Part of my irritation would be due to corporate overlays; still, there were some fairly nice built-in things. The interactive application search was nice.

Still, the mac's ability to handle multi-display windows sucked absolute ass.

I'm typing this on a Slackware 15.0 computer. (Think of a bleeding edge linux distribution; find a linux distribution as far away from that as possible; behold! Slackware.) It's running an ancient version of the K desktop Environment (KDE Plasma 5, version 5.23.5) which is perfectly able to show a window split across 2 screens. By default, I'll add.

The MacBook, however, would only display such a window on one of the two monitors.
