She didn't just swim away: she came back with gifts.
After rescuers freed her calf from a fishing net, a mother dolphin began regularly leaving fresh fish on a dock as a touching "thank you" gesture.
In July 2025, a dolphin calf became entangled in fishing gear near a marina. A man named Tom and other local boat owners successfully freed the calf and reunited it with its distressed mother. Days later, people at a nearby dock started discovering neatly placed fresh fish each morning.
Initially suspecting a prank, they checked surveillance footage and were stunned to see a dolphin surfacing at night, gently placing fish on the wooden dock before swimming off. The behavior was soon linked to the recent rescue, leading many to believe the mother dolphin was deliberately thanking the man who helped save her baby.
She repeated the act multiple times. While marine biologists are cautious about attributing human emotions like gratitude to animals, they note that dolphins possess high intelligence and complex social awareness. Real or symbolic, the story has captured hearts worldwide as a beautiful example of the special bond between humans and dolphins.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Galileo was not correct. The two objects to not hit the surface simultaneously. The more massive one (the hammer) hits the ground first, but the time-difference is so miniscule that it is far beyond our capability to measure it.

How can this be?

Here's how:

Yes, the feather and the hammer fall "down" at the same rate. BUT, the hammer has more mass, so to a vry very very very tiny degree, its mass is simultaneously pulling the Earth "up" toward the hammer. So, taking into account the upward movement of the earth toward the hammer, the hammer actually has less distance to "fall" before encountering the Earth, so takes less time to do so. The feather also pulls the Earth "up," but with less mass, so the effect is less, so it takes longer for the two bodies to meet.

This isn't even relativity -- this is true even under Keplerian/Newtonian/Galilean physics. But it's rarely mentioned.

Good point. BUT...:

If the experiments are conducted sequentially (as opposed to dropping at the same time), then the hammer falls faster than the feather.

But even if they are dropped simultaneous,ly the hammer will STILL hit the ground first, because the spherical larger body (Earth, moon, whatever) will tilt ever so slightly toward the hammer and away from the feather. The time-difference between a simultaneously dropped hammer and feather will still exist, but be ultra-hyper-mega-logorithmically-exponentially more tiny than even the immeausurably tiny difference in the sequential version of the experiment.

When I first saw that David Scott clip, I wondered if someone would bring this up, and here we go.

To resolve this, remember the acceleration field, which is g, gravity, must be relative to an inertial frame. In this case, the center of mass of the Moon and hammer, or Moon and feather frame will do. The acceleration field of the Moon remains constant. The hammer and feather accelerate toward the Moon at the same value relative to the center of mass frame.

The Moon itself just gains a tiny, immeasurable acceleration itself in that frame due to the mass of the hammer or feather.

The state of "accelerates at the same rate", which is the basic of the Equivalence Principle holds. It just doesn't take into account that relative acceleration.

Re Apollo 15. That was the first Moon landing mission where NASA stopped the quarantine for returning astronauts. Previously, in what was an over-abundance of caution, they imposed a 21 day quarantine. You've probably seen pictures and footage of Nixon speaking to the Apollo 11 astronauts inside that modified airstream quarantine trailer.

After Apollo 14, the conclusively proved to their satisfaction there were no moon bugs, and the Moon was sterile. Everybody knew that was the case before, but it couldn't be conclusively provided without actual samples.

And that was the mission where Jim Irwin came close to a heart attack during ascent.

And that reminds me, with Apollo 11, Nixon wanted to eat breakfast with the crew before they launched. They had a strict pre-launch quarantine, and that would've have broken it.

It would be bad if they got sick (as shown with Apollo 7) during the mission, so they isolate them a while beforehand.

It fell to Dr. Charles Berry (a legend of the Apollo glory days) to tell Nixon he couldn't do it, and why. He said Nixon wasn't happy, and he was afraid he was gonna get fired. The NASA brass picked him as the fall guy, being the chief flight surgeon and all that.

Another thing the NASA doctors worried about. There was a chance the crew could catch something, get sick on the way back or after return. And that would most likely be due to a regular ol' earth bug.

But, if it happened, there would be freak out they caught some alien virus/bug on the Moon. So for Apollo 11, they were even more cautious about the pre-launch quarantine and isolation.
