I couldn't find anything remotely interesting for Yom Kippur that I hadn't used before, so I figured I would plague you with one of my favorite paintings!

The invention of the camera pretty much wrecked classical painting. Not all at once, of course, but as photography became better, faster, and finally colored, achieving realism was kind of pointless, and the thing was to become more abstract or fantastic.

The final form is just throwing puke on a canvas, which is where we are today.

21 Morning, Art Folken,

I knew this was a van Gogh when I saw it -- though maybe it's because I've seen it before, here or elsewhere. It suggests cool fresh weather and a nice breeze out of the north, with maybe a rain shower later in the afternoon. Possibly thanks to the blue color of the hills in the distance.

Or, maybe not! I just looked it up on Wiki. show says three similar paintings form a series and two of them were painted after he was released, and I don't know enough to distinguish between the early painting and the later paintings.

Does anyone with greater knowledge know? Kris here?

On your Saturday music thread there was discussion of Don McLean's American Pie, and someone (Whig?) mentioned that his song, Vincent, was a good one also. After listening to both songs and reading the lyrics and artist explanations, I ended up in a van Gogh rabbit hole. This entire adventure took the better part of Saturday evening, but it was worth it.

And here I am again. With Vincent. But you're not going to trap me again, mister!

74 This is one of the more enjoyable van Gogh paintings for my taste. It isn't intense just pleasant and suggests a warm summer day. The curving brush strokes for the clouds and wheat convey a sense of motion from the wind. I got caught up in a close look at the brush work and how the colors were blended.

I don't know why this came to mind but examining the tree and bushes closely, they made me think of a Dr. Seuss illustration. No doubt a psychology paper could be made from that.

That's only 3.7x that of a fish, I can vouch for the attention span of a fish. We had a goldfish that moved the rocks at the bottom of the aquarium around into a slant. I went in and leveled it, to which to goldfish looked at me and made what I can only describe as angry, frantic mouth and body movements at me...for almost exactly 10 seconds...then looked around with a motion that I'd described as "Oh, what was I doing?", saw the rocks below, and started moving them again...

That, IMO is what made him "famous."

The National Gallery, Overview
Van Gogh painted several versions of A Wheatfield, with Cypresses during the summer of 1889, while he was a patient in the psychiatric hospital of Saint-Paul de Mausole, in the village of St-Rémy in the south of France. A first version, which he described as a study, was painted on site in late June 1889. The National Gallery’s painting, which was completed in September while Van Gogh was confined to his hospital room, is the finished version. He also made a smaller copy of it for his mother and sister.

The landscape includes typically Provençal motifs such as a golden wheat field, tall evergreen cypresses, an olive bush and a backdrop of the blue Alpilles mountains. Van Gogh wrote of painting outdoors during the summer mistral, the strong, cold wind of southern France, which here seems to animate the entire landscape. Everything is depicted with powerful rhythmic lines and swirling brushstrokes that convey Van Gogh’s sense of nature’s vitality.

Oh, Beethoven is wonderful - my first record was the Eroica - but I adore Bach.

On another note (ha!), I mentioned Strauss' Salome above. If you can find the Marco Polo CD, Florent Schmitt's La Tragedie de Salome is well worth listening to. It's the 1907 score to a 7-scene ballet.

187 Seems to be a pleasant morning today for us. This lovely, peaceful painting. Earlier, while running an errand, we were going through a neighborhood that still has areas of trees, not just wall to wall houses. As we approached a momma deer and her fawn appeared and crossed the street followed by a yearling doe. The morning sun struck hints of gold in their coats. Not something we see around here very often. I stopped the car, blocking traffic, until they disappeared into trees on the other side. What a nice surprise.

It was decades before they finally authenticated it as a Van Gogh though other experts still disagreed. For me, the one thing Van Gogh did expertly was proportion. This painting is proportionally off to me. Also his background figures were never as amateurish as the one in this painting. Lastly he never used a palette knife to scratch in straight lines , etc. maybe this was a one off for him as he experimented.
