Themes: The work explores themes of sexuality and societal fringes, typical of Koch's oeuvre, which often includes elements of eroticism and psychological complexity.
Technique: Koch is known for his meticulous painting style, which combines realism with a sense of unease, enhancing the impact of the subject matter. I guess a urinal can be sexual if it's for gay men. Posted by: redridinghood at September 22, 2026 09:47 AM (NpAcC) 61

When I was young I remember a type of urinal design where the porcelain fixture was integrated into the wall and went all the way to the floor. The advantage of that design is that a male of any height could use it, even young boys. They obviously fell out of favor with plumbing codes because you don't ever see them anymore.

Nocturne, 1930
Pyke Koch That's not a designated meeting place in Philly now? Museum Arnhem: "... is an evening scene featuring a round metal hut illuminated from within. White houses stand in the background. The hut is a public toilet for men and was common in Utrecht, where Pyke Koch lived. It is a strange tribute to a public place that also served as an intimate meeting place for homosexuals and was used for sex work. However, the painting does not explicitly refer to this. Nevertheless, in the early 1930s, Koch was indeed fascinated by the fringes of society and the underbelly of society. Nocturne is a good example of this. Koch studied law but changed course to become an artist. He began exhibiting in 1928. His work was immediately acclaimed. Although self-taught, he did take some lessons here and there and received advice. Koch presented this work for the first time at an exhibition in 1930. Reactions in the press showed that the subject was considered dirty, rigid, obscene, and insensitive. Yet the canvas depicts nothing more and nothing less than a small public building." -- No to hanging, but I like his bizarre works of art more than Salvadore Dali's.
