69 I really like this painting. It reminds me of some of the colonial and early American era houses in my home town. I like the way he captures the worn look of the stairs, the flagstone floor, and the cabinets. The colors are realistic and accurate. There is nothing dramatic in the scene but he conveys a sense of use and continuation, familiar comfort. Even the whitewashed wood areas show age and care. (The whitewash protects the wood.)

It is a quiet, pleasant image. It would suit me in a reading room or other den.

80 A while back, I saw some idiot claiming that people used to be taller because many older staircases were much taller on the rise than modern stairs.

And the theory was, the modern standard is set to what is comfortable for the average modern height; ease to step up.

So people were taller back then. And not, you know, that very few structures had stairs, and those that did were probably the only set the builder had ever built.
And the interior space was a premium not to be wasted on stairs built for ease of traverse.

But sure, people whose diet was sparce on meats were taller than today ....

But it's a good example of taking some facts and convincingly spinning it to something outlandish.

86 BTW, Millet had a sense of humor. His Wiki page has a painting of a man, sort of in Pilgrim's clothing, at an inn being served by two women. It is a light, pleasant image until you look at the figures. The women seem determined and focused on the fellow while he is glancing at the viewer, looking worried. The title is "Between Two Fires".

No pre-cut, Home Depot forms for him.

Using #1 pine (no knots) and such precise cutting and fitting.
Guarantee they don't squeak when you step on them.

A few months back I looked at a house with a stairway much like that, only narrower and steeper. I asked the same question, and was pointed to a hatch the owner had cut in the ceiling to hoist furniture to the second floor.
