Record heatwaves in France set to make champagne stronger

Champagne lovers may find themselves getting tipsy more quickly after French producers have been given the go-ahead to raise the alcohol content in a bottle of bubbly for the first time following this summer's record heatwave.
Winemakers can temporarily produce champagne with an alcohol content of up to 15% - above the 13% cap, industry officials have said.
The extreme heat and drought produced grapes with exceptionally higher sugar levels. Yeast converts sugar into alcohol during fermentation.
The temporary increase in champagne's alcohol content is only expected to affect a small number of wines, a spokeswoman for the Comite Champagne told the BBC.
During the second fermentation process, which gives champagne its bubbles, "a very small number of wines from this harvest could have slightly exceeded the regulatory limit of 13%, reaching around 13.1% or 13.2%."
"Therefore a decision was made to exceptionally and temporarily increase the regulatory limit to 15% - only for this year," she said.

I shouldn't be surprised but I did not know that French regulations set the max for Champagne. That being the case, I'm also surprised at the decision. Only a small number that might possibly go over by a tenth or two, so let's raise the limit by two percent. If you're going over, might as well go big!

Niche YouTube Channel of the Week

Tonight's feature is a YouTube channel called Project Farm. Todd is the YouTube modern day version of Consumer Reports. He takes a product segment, buys the products, evaluates them and shares the results.

The YouTube genre of product comparisons is crowded. "Buy this!" "Avoid this!" "Epic comparison of XYZ tools!" Most come across as shallow and clickbait. Todd has a formula that is not shouty, consistent, and infuses science and objective measures to reach concrete conclusions.

He started nine years ago with videos that mostly asked and answered "Does this work?" type questions. He accepts no sponsorships or promotional items from manufacturers. He relies on YouTube and Patreon for funding.

His niche is the shop and home - hand and power tools, lubricants, batteries, cleaners, flashlights, engine additives, paper shredders, etc. He tries brand names and no-names across the range from expensive to cheap.

The channel has over 3.93 million subscribers. Video counts vary by product, but often approach and exceed a million views each. He typically posts one new video a week.

The Lady Elaine Fairchilde puppet creeped me out but they never said anything. She's exactly how my 9th grade algebra teacher looked who flunked me (I had my parent's permission to retake the class as she was rude to my mother mid-term).

The best Mr. Rogers, ever, was when he was doped up in a hospital gown for his tonsils removal. I laughed as he almost flashed us all getting on the gurney. Toddler son had no idea what the deal was and the other boy was an infant. Mama gone crazy.

Rethinking that: If the car on the left is a '63 or '64 Ford, as I think it is, this pic must be from no earlier than late 1962, when the first '63s hit showrooms. So, between August, say, of '62 and late '73. The first oil crisis erupted in early '74 and prices such as .29/gallon were a memory.

52 100th anniversary for Route 66 this year. I was lucky enough to drive the section from Amarillo to Albuquerque this year. I've probably driven about 75% of it over the years. I'll probably never finish it all. No desire to visit LA or Chicago.
Lots of great scenery and interesting things to see along the way. It's kind of sad seeing all the old falling down motels and gas stations and thinking about what it was like many years ago.

I looked up that for fun, since the station has “Southland Oil Co” on it. Turns out that there was a Southland Oil Co for a while, based in Georgia, who’s was distinct from the Southland Corp.

So I’m gonna guess “somewhere in Georgia” for the where.

I've been on Route 66 where it parallels I-40 to visit the Cadillac Ranch site in Amarillo, and on Central Avenue in Albuquerque, but that's about it. From what I've read, though, 66 was no picnic to drive on -- it wasn't always smoothly paved and could be dangerous in the dark.

Looks like the photo was posted to a Facebook account that has since been terminated.

The description at the link I found is:

But trying to follow the link gets the terminated notice.

Looks like the account was for some oldie band that posted the photo.

And Google AI says:

But then it says:

Based on gas hanging around 28 cents a gallon between 1952 and 1960. The car looks like a mid to late 50's . And Southland Oil Corporation started up in Savanna, GA. They served the southeast, but took a turn rather quickly to a differen focus other than service stations which started around 1952.

Unsolicited advice: If he can't walk he should be referred to a PT who can prescribe the properly fitted one and billed to Medicare.

But if he can walk or get around with a cane or walker he should not be in a wheelchair. No need to use that before it is truly necessary.

Speaking of wine, bummer about Gundlach-Bundschu. Haven't been there in more than a decade, but it was always the 2nd stop when going to Sonoma (Buena Vista, I think the oldest continuously operating winery in CA, nearby, was the first stop). Good juice.

We have avoided it until now. Dad is almost 90, diabetic and has Parkinsons. Using a walker was difficult before. He already has PT twice a week but hates it.

134 Anyone who has the chance and hasn't done it should tour a winery that makes bubbly using the methode champenoise. It's pretty simple, but very cool. Especially impressive is that back in the old days they did it without modern tech or processes (or liquid nitrogen).

Back to Sonoma, Korbel is a good place to do it if you go there. Haven't been there in a while, but they were one of the few to make a sparkling red wine, sold only there. Was a great and unusual accompaniment for certain foods.

Not *that* well...

I once drove myself & checked in to ER with (what I suspected was) a UTI. Very painful and getting worse by the minute. Had chugged a quart of water as I left the house. After giving info at the reception desk, felt the urge to puke. Oh, yeah, like I turned inside out, into the trash can.

Still took an hour before they let me in. And I was the *only* person in the waiting area! At 4 a.m. on a weekday. Was unable to give urine sample, because the problem actually was a freaking kidney stone, blocking me.

Was 10 a.m. before they offered anything for pain, and 10:30 when they MRI'd me. (and puking again from the pain med)
