US Poverty Rate Falls to Lowest Level In History

Well, as long as we've been keeping track of it, anyway.

And median (average) household income hit a record high.

Wait until you see how the media spins this.

The U.S. poverty rate edged down to the lowest on record ‌in 2025, while median household income hit a record high, the Census Bureau said on Tuesday. There were 34.5 million people in poverty in 2025, the agency said.
The decline marked the second consecutive annual drop in the poverty rate and brought ⁠it to its lowest level since the bureau began tracking the measure. It came as policymakers debate the impact of federal spending cuts on safety-net programs.
The poverty rate -- the percentage of people living in poverty -- dipped 0.5 percentage point to 10.2% last year, the bureau said. The supplemental measure of poverty, which takes into account non-cash government benefits and taxes, was at 13.1%, and the median household ‌income ⁠increased 2.6% to $87,460.

The media very begrugingly stated that the poverty rate fell, but only "slightly, and then added that "experts" "fear the worse" is still to come.

Compare that to how they reported child poverty falling under Biden.

And also note that child poverty under Trump has fallen to the lowest level in recorded history, which they don't bother underlining.

Not at all. Mother Theresa never judged anyone for their life choices, and she took care of them. But then, she wasn't extorting the general public for tax money to do so. Not the same thing as the government demanding to pay for extravagance for "poor" people.

I never took public assistance for anything, and I left home at 17. I lived without a phone, without AC, without a lot in order to survive. I also always had a job, but there were times when I didn't not know where my next meal was going to come from. I got by, until I succeeded.

And now I get to pay for others to not bother. THAT is my objection. I still give plenty to the Church, and I have no issue if the Church chooses to use that to help folks. And it does.

Thirty years ago, or so, I was shopping in a grocery store at 3:30 am (I worked a weird shift). Their was a lady who got into the checkout before I did, two carts, full of steaks and goodies. The rules on EBT have changed and a lot of people have been cut off. They started counting assets, not just earning, and the level you can earn and get it was adjusted. Plus, if you are able to do at least 20 hours of work a week, you have to in order to get EBT. And they cut illegals off.

This enraged the left but it is taking effect. Prices on a lot of stuff that used to be cranked up knowing that people bought a lot of it on EBT are dropping.

I went to college in St. Louis (paying my own way and working). I used to go to Soulard Market south of downtown at noon to get the deals. 10 lbs of potatoes for a buck, a dozen ears of sweet corn for a buck, that sort of thing. Farmers didn't want to take it back, so they marked it down to nearly nothing. Perfectly fresh produce, and I made it last.

80 My church had a food bank for years, it was packed with basic food supplies like rice, beans flour, etc. Some basic canned stuff.

They shut it down finally because almost no one ever used any of it, it wasn't premade easy to make stuff. You had to work at it to make food.

Now, being of poor health and advancing age myself, I understand the delights of ready made and easy to cook food, so I have sympathy for some. But most can make something from ingredients. They just don't want to.

There's a Lutheran church in my old neighborhood that does a drive thru food pantry once a week. Cars lined up forever. They don't ask about means, they just give out boxes of food. The cars are pretty nice looking, washed and waxed. No walkups allowed. I think it is downright odd. But I guess it makes the Lutherans feel good.

The bus will take you through neighborhoods that are so poor their shacks have dirt floors and scavenged tin roofs. They lack any kind of plumbing or running water. I had a sailor who worked for me that was broke a couple of days after payday almost every payday after paying all of his bills and couldn't sort out his finances. He was a married E5.

I got him to go to the credit union and have them print out 60 days of his statement. His wife was going to mcdonalds three and sometimes four times a day while he was at work. It did not end well.

I cannot say how often this happens, but it definitely does happen that "stay at home" girl takes care of the house by not doing much and ordering doordash every single meal. That stuff adds up horrendously fast. Even if you don't count the delivery fees, the restaurants mark up the food because Doordash charges them a fee for the privilege of having their food listed. And Doordash sometimes marks up the food further.

Its easy 30% higher through them even before fees, than at the restaurant. More, sometimes. But mama ain't got time for all that cookin' and cleanin'

No. You always use loaded language, by the way. It makes it sound like a moral judgement, and not an economic observation.

Cars are essential in the US unless you can figure out how to get around without one.
Cars can either be bought all at once, or on an installment plan.
People who can scrape together the 5-10K for a used car off the side of the road are not the poorest - they have the ability to scrape together 5-10K. They are also not the most desperate since they have assets.

People who can scrape out 400-700 dollars a month for reaaaaallly long installment plans are taking a hit of income, but they will have no wages if they can't commute, and it is not a 5K hit.
Add to that the system of loans makes it an advantage to always have debt, and the more debt you have and can service, the easier it is to secure loans.

This is the perverse incentives that force poor decisions.

Clearly, Canada is for sale, and has been for a long time. To anyone with the money. It's like watching a naive municipal government get taken to the cleaners by a sports team building a stadium, but on a national scale. It's depressing.

181 I have a flat screen given to me for Christmas 3years ago by my nephew. It's in my living room, I don't watch it much. I usually camp out in my bedroom and have a 20 year old 19 inch TV in there. I also have 2 other old sets. They all work, no reason to throw 'em out. I'm just not part of the throw away society.

183 You can still get a pound of ground beef, 85% lean, at Aldi for $5.99. This will feed two people for two meals, or one for four, maybe five if you stretch it out with sides. Some olive oil to cook it in, seasoning, some pasta or taco shells or tortillas, and you're in business. Frozen peas & carrots are .98 for a pound bag, too.

You can buy canned chicken at Walmart for $1.40 or so, and use it to supercharge soup or chili, either of which can be had for less than $2.00 for a 16-oz. can. I know, those are not as healthy as cooking the soup or chili up yourself. But for many years I was worried that if I tried to cook something and it did not come out right, or at least edible, I'd have thrown away money I could ill afford to lose. That mindset is hard to lose.

I had a sailor who worked for me that was broke a couple of days after payday almost every payday after paying all of his bills and couldn't sort out his finances. He was a married E5.

I got him to go to the credit union and have them print out 60 days of his statement. His wife was going to mcdonalds three and sometimes four times a day while he was at work. It did not end well.

I knew a Second Class who had 3 kids and a big spender spouse, she 'handled' all the expenses. He declared bankrupt, said his creditors couldn't even contact him. I told him that was a 10 year mistake.
