I know a land where the bluebonnets grow. They bloom on the hills and down where it’s low, in valley, on plain, in path on the lane, and when in the spring the wild flowers blow, they cover the hills with blue all a-glow, and nod their heads in the rain.
Who would not live in this land of delight where flowers are Blue and Red and White? And birds in the sky with carol and lay are heard in the glen and on mountain height? Where nature reveals a beauteous sight and blue bonnets grow by the way? Long wave the Bonny Blue Banner on high, with ever the Stars and Stripes floating by, in unity show to friend and to foe that Love, the Lone Star, supreme in the sky e’er glows with a light that never shall die, where lovely bright blue bonnets grow. Texas, my Texas, may God never cease to bless you with truth and wisdom’s increase. Your cause ever be humanity’s plea, your hope that on earth, greed and war will surcease and bluebonnets grow as a symbol of peace, in the Lone Star State by the sea. Posted by: Julia D. What a beautiful example of what Impressionism can achieve. If I saw this in a gallery I could spend hours looking at how he applied color and used brush strokes. He really caught the look and, more importantly, feel of fresh blossoms on an early morning. The colors are soft and muted but the brilliance of the bluebonnets comes through even before the rising sun burns off the mists. It is a quiet, peaceful, restful scene. It calls for the viewer to be as quiet whether looking at the painting or the actual landscape.
The painting reminds me of seeing local bluebells (different plants but similar appearance) as they emerge near streams in the spring. We look forward to it every year. Look at some of Onderdonk's other works on his Wiki page. They have the same ability to show a landscape and the emotional sense it provides. His paintings are as good as any of the French masters of the style from a previous generation. What a shame he does so young. Posted by: JTB at September 16, 2026 09:50 AM (yTvNw) 66

The Rice Owls played in the 1954 Cotton Bowl Classic against the Crimson Tide of Alabama. The game featured one of the most famous plays in college football history when Rice's Dickey Moegle burst free on a sweep play, and on his way down the sideline, was tackled by Tommy Lewis, who had come off the Alabama sideline without his helmet to tackle Moegle. Referee Cliff Shaw saw Lewis come off the bench and gave the Owls the 95-yard touchdown.

A Cloudy Day, Bluebonnets near San Antonio, Texas 1918
Julian Onderdonk It's so calm & pretty, would definitely hang this piece. Thanks. -- Amon Carter Museum of American Art Julian Onderdonk left his hometown in 1901 to study painting in New York City. That summer, he enrolled in classes at William Merritt Chase’s art school in Shinnecock Hills, Long Island, where he developed a facility for plein-air landscapes. In 1909, he moved back to San Antonio and began to paint the natural scenery of the surrounding Hill Country region, focusing on the spring wildflower blooms. Onderdonk’s interest in the Hill Country was unconventional; most Texas landscape painters of his era favored the arid expanses of West Texas ranches. Nonetheless, Onderdonk gradually built a following, exhibiting his works both locally and in major national exhibitions. By the time of his early death at 40, he had helped usher in a new regional aesthetic that pictured Texas through the lens of contemporary impressionism rather than the rugged iconography of the so-called frontier. —Text taken from the Carter Handbook (2023) --- Oh! Texas has over 7000 lakes.......but yes, only 2 aren't man made.
I know about Caddo, what's the other one? Fun fact: The many reservoirs along the many Texas rivers were initiated following a severe drought in the mid 50s. Some of these reservoirs distribute water to adjacent watersheds (Dallas takes a lot of water out of East Texas). Current laws would not allow such scandalous development and the financial offsets of eliminating taxable property AND providing 3:1 offsets for reservations of virgin ecological/natural acres would make it prohibitive. PROGRESS!!!!/ Posted by: DanMan at September 16, 2026 10:20 AM (8uzBS) 116

What is all this fuss about sloppy toddler youth in Asia? My goodness, any parent can tell you toddlers are naturally sloppy. You just have to deal with it. Plan on extra napkins and paper towels, but honestly, they grow out of that stage so quickly...

Racism in Hollywood.
Hold on tight. Sunny Hostin is playing the race card. The far-Left “View” host played it for personal reasons this time. Hostin, unbeknownst to many, is a published author. Her book series includes titles like “Summer on the Bluffs” and “Summer on Highland Beach.” Turns out at least one tome made it to the New York Times’ Bestseller list. Said list is compromised, sadly, but it’s still a feather in Hostin’s cap. You go, birthing person! That’s not enough, though. She wants to see her stories on the big screen. And she blames racism for their absence. “And the gatekeeping in Hollywood around Black and Brown creative content is insane,” she continued. “I cannot get New York Times best-selling books onto the screen to tell diverse stories to diverse communities.” Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Where's My Cookie? at September 16, 2026 11:09 AM (ndZc7) 222
