Overnight Open Thread [09/14/2026]

That's a Hinckley Sou'Wester 51 looking particularly fetching. Sadly, the company no longer builds sailboats, which is a sad state of affairs, but their motor boats are rather nice looking, so I guess that is okay.

When I was a wee lad I sailed on Long Island Sound, and there were several Hinckleys in my neck of the woods; it was always a treat to see one of them on the water. They were classic, with beautiful lines and always built with good, but not cutting-edge tech. So they never looked like spaceships or race cars...just timeless and elegant.

And boy oh boy...I wanted one!

A month later, the woman again came in for a hairdo. The hairdresser asked her about her trip to Rome.
"It was wonderful," explained the woman, "Not only were we on time in one of United’s brand new 787s, but it was overbooked, so they bumped us up to first class. The food and wine were wonderful, and we had a handsome 28-year-old steward who waited on us hand and foot . . .”
“And the Taste hotel was great! They'd just finished a €5 million remodeling, and now it's a jewel, the finest hotel in the city. They, too, were overbooked, so they apologized and gave us their owner's suite at no extra charge!”
"Well," muttered the hairdresser, "That's all well and good, but I know you didn't get to see the Pope.”
"Actually, we were quite lucky, because as we toured the Vatican, a Swiss Guard tapped me on the shoulder, and explained that the Pope likes to meet some of the visitors, and if we'd be so kind as to step into his private room and wait, the Pope would personally greet us.”
“Sure enough, five minutes later, the Pope walked through the door and shook my hand! I knelt down and he spoke a few words to me . . .”
"Oh, really! What'd he say?”
He said: "Who fucked up your hair?

I am always disappointed when I see this sort of thing. This mass psychosis that events do not exist unless recorded on one's phone is getting worse and worse.

It is also a function of the social media lunacy that consumes many of us...that insane desire to post a video and get that invaluable endorphin blast when your tweet or reel or TikTok video is picked up by the internet mob.

Or...maybe just put your phone down and help the lady in the car that just crashed.

Just a thought.

26 Sailboats are awesome.

They make you slow down and enjoy the journey. You have to be a meticulous planner, yet be prepared and willing to adjust to change. Change in the wind, the waves, the temperature. You have to be able to cook a four course meal in a blow. Sometimes it squalls when it’s supposed to be sunny.

It’s the adventure. And the journey. And the tinkering with the sails. That’s the best. I love flying a spinnaker. What a rush.

And sailing at night in a light breeze with a trail of phosphorescence. And the stars! Oh man. The stars.

Had this happen with an emergency landing. I was yarding people off the plane - technically they were falling/jumping and I was catching/slowing their descent (no ladder, no slide). Everyone off and I turned to run and saw a woman in her 70s getting up off the ground by another door. Hustled over and picked her up and carried her. Looked up and there were a lot of able bodied men who no doubt saw her before me - they were busy recording on their phones. Disgusting.

Nothing ever happens to them. So... why?

Archie: To Riverdale and Back Again, TV Movie, 1990 (not to be confused with the later awful Riverdale movie), had the kids post-college. One good scene was Ethel, who had blossomed into a hot supermodel (and, as I recall, headed straight for the hot tub). I seem to recall B & V bathing at Archie's, but I don't recall if they were in the same shower together. Probably not; you'd think I'd remember something like that. It was otherwise a pretty stupid and forgettable movie. But still superior to that later series.

The guy who played Jughead, Cole Sprouse, was excellent. Luke Perry had one of his last acting roles before his death as Archie's dad, and Madchen Amick played Betty's mother.

127 We just finished watching the original The 39 Steps, Hitchcock's 1935 flick. It's got humor and wit in the right places, Donat and Madeleine Carroll are great, and it certainly moves. But there are big gaps in narrative logic, as if scenes were clipped out. How does Hannay, Donat's character, switch suits while he is on the run, for instance? We should have seen him filching a suit somehow.

I have fond memories of the 1959 version with Kenneth More, but I saw it in high school on TV. Dunno if I'd like it now.

The only thing bad about motor boats is ~4 to 6 gal per hr.
Sail boats are amazing, especially these daze, not to hit the high water but to be able to go from here to there without ~4 to 6 gal per hr. Ever watch 'To Have and Have Not'? He island hopped from Florida to Martinique. That's a lot of gas.
Sail boat all you need is food, water and maybe a little propane.

143 I often go to a park on the Delaware River to watch boating lessons by the Corinthian Yacht Club. It has junior sailing programs with Flying Scots and C420s, along with adult sailing programs, racing clinics, private instructions.

Tiny boats in one channel separated by an island; tugs, tankers and cargo ships occupying the other channel. Delaware state to the left, New Jersey directly across the river. Pretty neat.

Had a fall baseball practice for catchers and pitchers. My oldest catches and after catching for some of the pitchers, they gave the catchers an opportunity to show their best pop times (time from the catcher's glove to the glove of the baseman covering second base).

I might mention that the slowest was a senior, varsity catcher. My oldest is a freshman. He's worked very hard at it, and it was a nice triumph for him and opportunity to show the coach and players there what kind of stuff he had.

Only ones I have experience with were quite good, served us well on a very long trip to the Sea of Cortez and back, with of course the final 800 miles being on motor, as the wind direction is, literally consistent with the joke, from the tip of Pt. Loma towards the bow of your boat, all the way. Hence the "Baja bash" on the return.
