THE MORNING RANT: In Defiance of the Climate Cult’s Apocalyptic Prophecies, there Have Been Zero Hurricanes in the Atlantic so far this Year

We are now past the peak of hurricane season, and this has been a very quiet year in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of America. In fact, we are in unchartered territory due to the complete and total absence of any hurricanes this year in the Atlantic basin. There has never been a year in recorded history without a hurricane this far into September. To be clear, this is not a discussion of hurricane landfalls, this is about the complete and total absence of hurricane formation.

There are no hurricanes on the horizon, either. There have not even been any tropical storms with sustained winds exceeding 60 mph. (74 mph is the threshold for hurricane classification.)

According to the childishly simple logic of the Church of Climate, because more hurricanes are proof of global warning, then an absence of hurricanes is proof of “global cooling.” It would be preposterous, of course, to use this year’s hurricane season as proof of global cooling, but it is just as preposterous to make the counterclaim in years that are tropically active.

“The Atlantic Reaches a Milestone for the Latest Date Without a Hurricane; And according to the National Hurricane Center, no hurricanes are on the horizon.” [Washington Post – 9/11/2026]

Hurricane season will reach its approximate peak on Friday — but this year, not a single hurricane has yet formed in the Atlantic Ocean, setting a new record for a lack of storms. This is the latest into the Atlantic season without a hurricane forming since weather satellites were first launched in the 1960s.

Climate cultists and their propaganda arm in the legacy media have been prophesying “stronger and more frequent” hurricanes for decades now. This is part of their “global warming” scare campaign, for which their solution is banning carbon fuels and imposing command and control over all economic activity. In other words, only communism will please their angry climate God.

An important facet of the climate hoax has been to report any “above normal” weather of any sort as proof of climate change. This is an example of statistical and numerical ignorance, of course, because “normal” is being used as a synonym for median or average, but by definition 50% of all inputs are necessarily above the median.

Back in 2020 and 2021, there was above average tropical storm development in the Atlantic. The scientifically ignorant media, relying on the scientifically dishonest “climate experts,” matter-of-factly reported that increase in tropical activity as being due to a warming planet: “How Tropical Storms and Hurricanes Have Hit U.S. Shores with unparalleled Frequency; A record 18 storms and hurricanes have made landfall in the past two years”

Unrelenting and unprecedented, back-to-back Atlantic hurricane seasons have punished the Gulf and East coasts of the United States. An unsurpassed 49 named storms have formed over the warming Atlantic waters since the start of the 2020 season, with a record-setting 18 striking the Lower 48 states, including seven hurricanes.
Scientists say this record-setting stretch of storminess is connected to a period of heightened hurricane activity that began in 2017 but may become increasingly common as the planet warms.

A warming planet had nothing to do with the record number of storms in 2020 and 2021. There were two main reasons:

1) Aggressive naming of storms: In decades past, to be classified as a “tropical storm” there had to be a circular rotation and sustained winds of at least 39 mph. Nowadays, to pump up the number of storms, pretty much any offshore thunderstorm that registers a 39 mph gust gets classified as a tropical storm. In addition, until satellites were employed in the mid-1960s, storms in the mid-Atlantic were not named at all.

2) La Nina: 2020 and 2021 were years with La Ninas in the eastern Pacific Ocean. La Ninas are periods when cool water rises to the surface of the equatorial Pacific (due to strong trade winds pushing the surface water westward.) This predictably results in more Atlantic hurricanes due to how it lessens wind shear over the Atlantic.

By contrast, there is a strong El Nino right now. The westerly trade winds have lessened, as is their cyclical norm, and warm water is pooling in the eastern Pacific. This has the effect of increasing wind shear in the Atlantic, suppressing hurricane development. There is also a lot of dry, dusty air moving west from the Sahara Desert into the Atlantic, also helping to suppress tropical activity.

The real-world reality is that there is neither man-made global warming nor global cooling. It is sinister how weather has been politicized by the left to try to deny people freedom and economic liberty. But since the beginning of time, it has been the practice of high priests and political leaders to blame bad weather on the “sinful” behavior of ordinary citizens as a means of increasing the leaders’ power and control.

The climate community has made the case that hurricanes are fueled by carbon usage, and that the only trajectory would be stronger and more frequent hurricanes unless fossil fuels are banned. This year’s lack of hurricanes disproves their crackpot theory. The climate community – and their pagan religion – deserve abundant mockery in this year without a hurricane.

Nautical Lesson Approaching. Give way.

If the wind is first coming over the port side of the boat, it is on port tack. When sailing straight down wind, whichever side the boom is not on is considered the side over which the wind is coming. Thus, one could change tack without changing direction, merely by bringing the boom and sail across to the other side - technically a jibe, since the bow is not passing through the direction of the wind.

Buck, by that you mean *tropical* storms, not including hurricanes? They started naming hurricanes much earlier than 1965. I remember my mother putting a big sheet of wood over our dining room window when I was in second grade, 1961, for Carla. And Betsy hit us in '65, and it was certainly not new for hurricanes to be named by then.

Wiki sez they were naming tropical storms (most of which became hurricanes) in the Fifties, though.

There were no reported hurricanes at all in 1907 and 1914. But that was well before the satellite era, and many open ocean storms were likely completely missed. If no ship was there, or it didn't come anywhere close to land, nobody would know it.

My Dad had been a weatherman with the Army Air Corps in WWII. He always said that I you gave him two guesses we would tell you if it was going to rain or not.

Also, being a farmer, he was never satisfied with the weather. There was always either too much rain, or not enough.

170 Chance of rain doesn’t say it will rain or not rain. It says in the past when these conditions existed it rained 20% of the time or 80% of the time or whatever.

People however see 80% and think oh it’s going to pour all day long. Or 20% they see it as it won’t rain or it may just rain a little.

When in fact an 80% day could be bright sunshine and a 20% day could be an inch of rain. The percentage doesn’t say how much rain, just the percent of time it has rained in the past. Could be a sprinkle could be deluge. It counts the same.

When something has an 80% chance of happing it does NOT happen 1/5 times. But people in general are really bad at conceptualizing that.

So, if they are 80% sure it will rain *somewhere* in the forecast area, but the expected coverage is 50%, that will be a 40% PoP.

So, a 80% change of rain means that for any spot in the forecast area, there is an 80% chance that spot will get 0.01" of rain or equivalent over the forecast period.

That does not mean a lot of rain. Just means you've got a high probability of getting some measurable amount.

They have been trying to make an enormous open system of competing equilibria fit their narrative for 50 years. The thing is, they have also screwed data collection. We 'might' be able to understand the system better if we had accurate data, but they have intentionally put english on the data to fit what they want to get out of it. That makes it harder or near impossible for real observation. Actual science of 'I don't know what's going on- let me watch it a while.'

Now, for us 29 yr olds, the limit is lower than that. Dew point hit 82F here twice this August, and well, I wasn't going to stay out in that.

It’s only when moved out west and experienced dry air that I realized how shiity that weather is. I acclimated quickly. Now even a little humidity like a dew point of 55 and I’m sweating. Meanwhile 65 is a normal day for a lot of the county and even into the 70s for Florida.

The highest official dew point every recorded in the US was 88F on July 19, 2001. In Moorhead, MN.

Melbourne FL claims a dew point of 91F in July of 1987, but that is not official. Station was not properly certified and all that.

The world record is 95F, measured in Saudi right on the Persian Gulf coast. You would not survive that for too long.

Dan Rather was the news director at Houston’s CBS affiliate and covered Carla. He got his big break there. I was only 4 so I don’t remember Carla. The first really big one I remember was Camille. A second cousin’s family home in Biloxi was demolished.

Actually, it kinda is. Climate does change - it gets warmer, it gets colder. I surmise that hurricane activity can be a gross, indirect measurement of atmospheric energy, which is a driver of temperatures.

But to insist that the climate should be identical year-to-year-to-year-to-year in the same place.....well, now THAT'S real climate-denial.
