The packages - software modules - themselves were malicious, and the efforts to upload them to RubyGems were malicious. The attribution to OpenAI itself as opposed to OpenAI's users is unproven, but the pattern looks similar to the attack on a German wiki site that has been admitted by the company.

It points out that the design space in question is a nine-dimension hypercube in which JavaScript of all languages is the one that got it right. Yes, there are tradeoffs that led other languages to decide differently, but those decisions are dumb.
Which is of interest to me because I've spent the morning on async-await in my own programming language. Well, that and adding wildcard indexes to my database and doing an end run around multidatabase ORM design.

It's great when you control the compiler and the runtime and the database libraries and the primary database; you can just make decisions that simplify things everywhere and there's nobody to complain. Well, Claude said my proposal would need rewrites of ten existing client libraries, but that's a bit like the creator of the C makefile format protesting that he couldn't change the format because he already had twelve users.

Also, just found that something I'm planning to do tomorrow was a PhD thesis topic as recently as 2018.
You can turn off that annoying thing Claude does when it hallucinates a harmful phrase and downgrades the model in use. Today it dropped from Opus 5 to the older Opus 4.8 in the middle of implementing a wire protocol to MessagePack translation layer, meaning that I need to recheck everything it's done for the past hour. Just go into /config and it's the third option.

Which to be fair I need to do anyway; time for the weekly adversarial testing round.

If Robert Ruark's novel Something of Value is an accurate depiction, it was "fought" by terrorism, betrayal, and slaughter on the Kenyans' part and By-Any-Means-Necessary-to-Survive on the whites' part. I need to get a copy of that book and his follow-up, Uhuru, before they get disappeared. Both utterly destroy the notion of the noble African suffering under the boot of the European, and needing only to be free to achieve great things.

Never read the book but did see the movie with Rock Hudson And Sidney Poitier many years ago. Don't remember much about it other than Poitier's character falling into a spreed pit at the end.

Props to the filmmakers for not making Poitier's character into a good guy at the end. His character had grown up with Hudson's on the latter's plantation; they had been playmates and friends. Then the Kikuyu (native) boy begins to realize, and resent, the difference between white and black in the society. He commits a crime -- possibly not his fault; I don't recall -- and flees, only to be caught up in the Mau-Mau terrorism. Reluctant at first, he takes to it (because refusing to take to it is to be murdered) and discovers he's good at terrorism and slaughter. His character is understandable, in a way, but not simply misunderstood. He could have been, in modern terms, "a good boy," but chose not to be.

As I recall it, Miklos, John McKeithen (an old Huey Long crony) promised to take the tolls off if he were elected governor in '64, and was, and did. The new bridge that turned the span into the superhighway it should always have been didn't get started until the late '70s and didn't open until 1988. No tolls on that for the first three months, then a reasonable dollar after that. Though if you got a toll tag on your car and charged it to your credit card, it was like .70.

A few years ago came the big squeal that "The bridge is paid for! Why do we need tolls?" The voters chose to say, "Remove the tolls." So the bridge maintenance is not being paid for, and the ferries, which used to be free for pedestrians, now cost $2 per person *each way*.

Yes, that's the inconsistency in the premise, that previous uses of the machine would affect the current one. Now, in the forty years since TNG, we could say, "Well, the pattern buffer got corrupted" or something. But there's nothing in Langelaan's story, or the movies as far as I know, about any kind of particle storage. So it all comes out of, not even left field, but the stadium's parking lot.

I read that the 1980s version was gory for the sake of gory and of grossing the audience out. I passed.

Goldblum will forever be Ian Malcolm of Jurassic Park to me. That character, like Richard Dreyfuss's in Jaws, was some comic relief -- giving us funny if not witty commentary on the ongoing action -- and a stand-in for the audience.

The best bang for the buck in the AI space are Macs.

You can get a 30 core m5 ultra, 96gb Mac Studio for 5k. The knockoff card is over 4k just for the card, once you build a system around it, you’re looking at around 7k.

With memory and storage prices through the roof, Macs are downright cheap now by comparison.

What kind of workload are you thinking of? In software, particularly large solution for significant architectural tasks, you need very large parameter models, and they do you little good if they are spitting out a few tokens per second.

The cheapest route I've found that doesn't involve Chinese knock-offs (which, sad to say, are going to eventually win the AI wars) is running GPT "Luna" for basic refactors, mappings and validations, "Terra" when wanting better answers to cross module refactors, and "Sol" when desiring solution wide consistency.

Local AI implementation solutions are far too expensive compared to what can be rented. There must be compelling reasons that ignore cost to go on-prem.
