Welded the other pedestal on top, so like a rolling file cabinet. Toted it out to the big shop, and began filling it up. Began rolling it on the smooth concrete floor to place it against the wall. Crack! the front 2X2 split, and spit out two casters. The cabinet toppled forward, and all the drawers flew open. Nothing spilled at all. But I had to empty all the drawers, remove the split 2X2, and replace it with a 2X4, and I ran screws through it on either side of the holes for the caster spindles, to forestall another splitting event. Refilled it, and rolled it to the wall without a further wreck.

I bought a new recliner to replace my current one, which fits snuggly between two fully loaded book cases. I bought the new one sight unseen, online, picked it up in a big box (some assembly required) and wrestled the box onto my covered patio last week.

This evening I finally opened the box and brought the pieces inside. They looked a little bigger than my current chair. The new chair measures 40" across the back. The distance been the bookcases is 35".

I think I will break out the whiskey and ponder this for a while.

I continue to be gob-smacked by the Schiehallion experiment. That was conducted by Nevil Maskelyne, 5th Astronomer Royal, and mathematician Charles Hutton.

Charles Mason, of Mason-Dixon fame, was also involved in precisely measuring distances that needed to be measured.

Their result for the density of earth, and hence the mass was off by about 20%.

But most of that error was due to factors they couldn't account for -- the higher order gravitational deviations and a more accurate model of the earth mean ellipsoid.

In 2005, a group took the original astronomical and geodetic measurements, but using more accurate precision models of the above. The result was within 1% of the modern accepted value. That's how good their measurements were. In 1774.

My family were not rich enough for any fancy "satellite dish". They did get this rotateable antenna on top of a pole atop the house, which if carefully adjusted allowed us to get fuzzy TV transmissions from exotic locations like Augusta or Spartanburg. Sometimes even Charlotte, the Big City.

That angle they measured was around the 1/3 the width of a human hair held at arm's length.

It took over 4 months of raw measurements and field work, and then a few more months after that just to do the computations by hand.

To do it, first they had to measure the volume of the mountain precisely, the determine the center of mass. Then they established a N-S meridian through that center. Some distance on either side, they mounted two zenith sectors. This is very precise telescope that doesn't move one little bit. It points straight up, according to plumb (and getting that plumbed to precision required.....)

And then a few months and thousands of observations of stars passing directly overhead. And the timing had to be precise. They needed to know the exact GMT time the star hit the bullseye.

Now, there is all sorts of human bias in the "mark!" moment. It's not random, each individual will have some systematic error in calling "mark". So, you have many different people do it, and then average it out.

Then you had twinkling and all that to worry with. And mechanical error in some of the apparatus. So, it took a few months with thousands of observations.

Those thousands of observations were enough to average out all those errors. And then you had to hand calculate those thousands of measurement averages.

Those two scopes on each side of the mountain were basically calculating the minute difference in latitude of the two points. But the vertical deflection introduced and error in that. So Charles Mason's job was to precisely measure the true geodetic distance between those two points, dead on the meridian. That then gave you the true difference in latitude. Compare that to the astronomical value, and you get the vertical deflection.

And that is how they weighed the earth in 1774.

Survived the nursing reunion with no Dims or yapping about anything other than memories. Only four of us out of 40, which was a bummer. I am sure some are in heaven and others disappeared. Plus other classes.

One of my apt roommates texted me today she was coming then texted she wasn't. It was from a number I did not recognized & asked who is this. Several numbers and emails & have accused her of being in witness protection. She claims she wants to have lunch with me & another friend who lives here soon.

Two other "girls" lived above me in an historic old house. I went to Kino Bay, Mexico with them one spring break & sometimes was in a fetal position in the back of her porshe for that trip. I'd go anywhere. I asked for photos of that trip (both live in another state). The porshe girl told me that I taught her how to squat to pee in the desert & she remembers a lot.

Both knew my bf/husband & find it hard to believe we are still married after our first year.

It was fun. Other classes in that decade, & I don't remember anyone but those in my class.

I seem to be holding up fairly well as people knew me without my name tag.
