I think this is a remarkable photograph, showing Tower Bridge being built in 1889. It is most beautifully colourised by Jordan Lloyd (known as Dynamic Chrome) and is one of my favourite pieces of colourised art.

One of my favorite parts of the Sherlock Holmes movie with Robert Downey, Jr. was the shots of the Tower Bridge under construction. It also served as a nice "Chekov's Gun" for the climax of the movie.

48 My Mom work for the soil conservation corp in Little Rock in around 63 64 65.
One of her projects was to take a map of Arkansas about 4' x 5' and then colour code the different soils with colored pencils.
She said she worked on it off and on for about a year.
I always assumed it was a big print from a medium format camera printed to a textured paper.

He bought several big boxes of those keyring things and slowly worked them together in patterns every Friday Night game of Champions we'd play and eventually made a shirt. Kinda tore up his fingers but it was so cool when it was done. Of course, back then they didn't have that kind of quality of nickel-plated steel either

I remember reading a book that described how they made the best rifle barrels. They'd take nails and pound them flat, heat them and turn them into a billet, then curve it around a mold and weld it in place (not with a welder, just heat and pounding). The grooving was carved out with a steam powered lathe. This was in the early 1800s.

Part of why rifles were so rare and expensive.

James Mitchener's book Tales of the South Pacific (upon which the musical South Pacific was based) is a collection of short stories inspired by Mitchener's WWII service. One story concerns the Japanese astonishment at how many resources the US was willing to risk to rescue one guy. Pretty much the same thing.

Ancient armor can be more readily understood once you realize the level of technology. Steel wire is much easier to make than steel plate. Same thing with small scales. It is time intensive, but you have lots of people with lots of time, and as others have observed, the sewing skillset (which common) could be used.

It is very effective against cuts and slashes, but vulnerable to bludgeoning (which can break the bones underneath) or a piercing weapon that can split the rings apart.

All armor has tradeoffs, and one that D&D players never experienced was heat exhaustion. Under the armor you have to wear some sort of padding and that traps heat.

It's a good thing in Northern Europe, but in warmer climates it's an issue. You can see why so many armies (Greeks, Romans) did not wear pants, which lock in heat.

Those sound like rugelach- my dad made those every Christmas. Cream cheese pastry rolled into a circle, spread with a thin layer of apricot or plum preserves, sprinkled with toasted walnuts or pecans, then cut into triangles, rolled up like a crescent roll, brushed with egg wash and sprinkled with sugar. And yes, excellent with coffee or tea! Rose Levy Beranbaum has an recipe in her Christmas cookie book, which I might dd, is both a great cookbook as well as gorgeous.

Spanish rifle barrels were done that way. Northern Spain had iron and coal, and water power to run their "Basque forges" which depended on a system of blowing air from water pressure.
Spanish ore was heavy in Phosphorous, which made a ductile wrought iron and a soft steel that would not shatter, both of which were desirable in old fashioned guns. There were gunsmiths that made wrought iron barrels using old horseshoes which were considered very fine in quality and beaten beyond what the forges could do, and one gunsmith did make a barrel out of nails, but that was referred to in the book I read on the subject as sort of a masterwork to show he could do it more than an industry practice.
Rifles are hard to make and require precision that was not found in the normal gunworks. IIRC wheellocks tended to all be rifled since they were high end mechanisms.

I have seedless white grapes that I dry into raisins. They are tasty when I make chutney or cinnamon rolls. I didn't make any raisins this year since I had to radically cut that vine back last winter and lost most of the 1st year wood.

I make a wicked good oatmeal raisin cookie. When my dad was running up and down mountains, all his groupies swore they were better than energy bars or any of the other overprocessed crap they passed off as "healthy."

OTOH, they were outside doing their running, so I guess the intestinal gas was dissipated. Probably a benefit.

Grandma's recipe just sort of melts in your mouth. They are yummy. But they have to be relatively fresh. Luckily, they are so good they don't sit around long.

Too bad she didn’t let me eat them. The rest of the family, yes. But not me. At 92# and 5 feet tall she restricted my food intake. Wanted to “help me” be thin for gymnastics. She put a lock on the refrigerator and on the pantry. I had to steal change out of her purse to buy a candy bar for lunch. In high school. It was awful.

So. Now I have food issues. And I’m fat.

I remember some peanut butter cookies she made. I was a small kid but they were MASSIVE. They had to weigh half a pound.

My friends' cat Snowflake has been inside more often. I'll keep her and her mom Starry here in the winter. Not a problem. Big house. They don't do damage.

But Snowflake had been in more often. Kind of going on counters she usually doesn't. It's like she's staking out areas. And I'm not fattening her up again, well I'm watching her weight but it seems like she's trying to put on winter weight....

In Israel I have seen many people get a tuna salad looking thing, bagel, and a few pieces of fruit or vegetable.
When I was a rode warrior I love the kosher bfast when heading home.

My Mamaw kept a bowl of AP flour under the sink covered with a towel.
Then she poured in buttermilk and a scoop of Crisco and then made biscuits.
Pans in the oven with a small rub of bacon grease and then the back side of a tablespoon on top of the biscuit to brown the top.
Semi kosher
