Mid-Morning Art Thread: 25 Years Later

It is an iconic photograph, and one that encapsulates the horror of September 11th and the 2,977 people who were murdered that day by Islam. And I use the word "murdered" very carefully. This man did not commit suicide in the conventional sense. He was presented with two awful choices, and I believe that he chose the option that gave him control over his death.

If you would like to read Kris's commentary about this photograph, here it is.

But there are other images that may be becoming more important: those that represent the West's response to the 1,400 year old war against it conducted by Islam.

This is Gaza, soon after the Arab savages rampaged through the Israeli border communities. This was the beginning of the Israeli response to Islamic barbarism, and it is an image that may need to be repeated thousands of times across the world by a united West if we are to defend 21st century Western civilization against the 7th century.

And...this is not to denigrate the man in the photo above; he made an awful choice, and I respect him for it, and pray that he is at peace. But remembering and solemnity and sadness should be only a part of our response, and a cold fury, as seen in the second photo must be included.

I have to believe this, in my own head just to make it 'better,' that those that made the decision to NOT die in a fiery torture and take that leap was that they felt they would black out from fear or some other form of unconsciousness and they would never really know when they hit the ground.

It is impossible for me to fathom what they were going through..... I do believe that God knew and understood their decision and showed them tremendous mercy.

23 The photographer took many photos of many jumpers. He helped identify someone’s wife. The husband knew what his wife was wearing and was able to identify it was her. Her body was never identified or recovered. And seeing that photo gave him closure.

26 I was working with an auditor from one of the big 5 firms a couple of years after 9/11. She was there - downtown NYC. As she described that day, watching people dive out of the towers, her facial expression changed. It went blank. Through that whole conversation. It was haunting, and I recall that conversation even today. I sure hope she found peace with those memories.

34 One of my friends on the east coast was the first to tell me about the jumpers. This was a couple days after 9/11, and I called just to make sure she was OK. She said the national networks were sanitizing the feed, but the local stations had shown live, unedited feeds and you could see the bodies falling.

I'm talking about the single word "prayer."
Suddenly, it was EVERYWHERE.
Media outlets who would ordinarily never mention such a thing used the word constantly. Newspapers (remember those?) printed it in headlines. You were forwarded emails about it. Businesses used the word in marquee sugns.
It lasted maybe a week, but suddenly and everywhere it was acceptable to mention prayer.

I was watching on a local feed and saw plenty.

My little town is less than 20 miles from the World Trade Center, and several hundred feet higher. We could see (and smell) the smoke for many days afterward.

I was in a high rise (18th floor) in Arlington, VA, facing DC. Couldn't see the pentagon, as it was blocked by the hill withing Arlington Cemetery, but watched the billowing smoke, the helicopters airlifting out victims, and heard the endless activity of police cars, ambulances, racing around all day long.
Sat on the couch watching DC, wondering if I would see another plane hit or bomb go off.

I believe this is sound theology. After all, scripture makes it quite clear that God does not forgive anyone who doesn’t repent. Isaiah 1:18, 1 John 1:9… NT and OT alike!

63 The photo shows an instant in time for one man. It is a powerful picture.

Yet it does not come close to giving the full story. Video of people falling from the upper floors of the North Tower is horrific and heartbreaking to watch. All of them were tumbling, many with arms and legs flailing. It is painful for me to watch their final moments on Earth. If you want to see some of the sheer horror of the Twin Towers attacks, seek out video of people falling from the upper floors of the North Tower.

Little of that is in US-produced news and documentary videos. Because of our culture of not wanting to see terrible deaths and the remains of the dead. You can see several videos of people falling from the North Tower, and a view of some of the broken bodies, in this utube copy of a BBC 2006 docu-drama titled 'Flight 11." Near the finish. May they rest in peace.

He was dead if he stayed, was dead if he leapt. The difference was the amount of pain and suffering each option gave him.

I believe there was only ONE person who actually survived the fall of the buildings from near the top floors...most every bone in his body broken...organs damaged.

A buddy of mine is a coroner. He sees death on a regular basis.

He says that he's seen bodies of people who were dying of agonizing conditions, yet when their time came, the only expression on their face was ultimate peace, as though the Lord came down and took it all away just before they passed.

I believe He could have given those people trapped in the Two Towers that same peace, knowing they had no other way out for them.

My 9/11 story is kind of weird because I was literally seeing it unfold through another's eyes.

At the time, I was performing an early morning root canal on a patient. We had a Tv in the ceiling for patients to watch and earphones for them to hear.
I was working on his tooth when his eyes suddenly popped open in alarm.

"Are you okay?" I said.

And he pointed a shaking finger at the ceiling.

The first plane had hit the Towers.

Well, I had to finish my job. I couldn't leave the poor guy half done, so I continued with the root canal.

Suddenly, his eyes popped open again and his head jerked in alarm and terror. He jabbed a finger at the ceiling. The second plane had struck the Towers.

It was clear we were under attack, but I had to continue because the root canal was a difficult one.
So, I just told him, "Please don't move around. If something happens, just let me know."

i finished the root canal but every once in a while he'd look at my eyes and point to the ceiling.

I finished the root canal in a reasonable amount of time...around the time it was clear that those poor people started jumping from the buildings.

We closed the office for the day and went home.

91 I don't recall the day of the week 9/11 happened, but it's the day after my wife's birthday. 25 years ago we were still in bed when her sister called. We'd taken the day off, planned on going to the beach. We were living in California... Mountain View and had only been there 4 months.

Turned on the TV and forgot all about the beach.

Not sure quite how to say this, but things in Silicon Valley continued as normal for most of that day. It really wasn't until the government shut down the air space and flights were grounded did anyone really take note. That night was particularly eerie.

In my early adult years, having been raised Catholic, going through classes and receiving Communion and all, I still had questions and doubts. I remember heated discussions with my mother, a largely devout Catholic, about God and allah (PissBUH) and who was right or wrong in their faith.

While this time in my life was a bit of a struggle and my faith was poor, islham started attacking. I learned what a 'suicide bomber' was........I was exposed to what islham was and what it was willing to do.

The book, "The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11," 2007, by Lawrence Wright, should be required reading for every high school junior or senior in the US. Sadly, few nowadays will have the attention span and open mind to comprehend it and get more than a chapter or two into it.

If you want a solid history of Al Qaeda, bin Laden, the planning of the attacks, and the failure by US counter-terrorism agencies to stop the attackers, I cannot recommend this book strongly enough.

I went to San Francisco for a wedding in October 2001, and I was shocked by how little people seemed to care.

I remember driving up to Sonoma after the wedding and being amazed at how few homes were flying American flags. In my little town in NJ, almost every town had a flag, and the stores were sold out.

Driving to the gym to workout and shower before going to work, I heard him announce -- as he was likely watching a television feed -- that ANOTHER plane had just flown into the second tower. Clearly an act of Terrorism and War.

Immediately went to the work office where the entire rest of the day we all watched the coverage on the office TV.

My ultra-lefty dad was supported in this by my ultra-lefty mom.

Some people just can't be reached. I told them that everything I have or will ever have is a function of being lucky enough to have been born in the States. The one time in my life this country calls for help, I'll be damned if I ignore it.

As I commented in the Morning Report thread, I was working at a NYC television station back then. Along with all the craziness happening around me from an engineering standpoint, I was rolling tape, recording every single feed, not only from our remote trucks, but the other broadcast stations as well....WABC 7, WNBC 4 and WCBS channel 2. A number of years later, I finally digitized those tapes and burned a number of DVDs that contain all that raw, unedited footage. Every year, I take those DVDs and watch much of the chaos that unfolded that day. It seems so surreal now. The fact that we didn't strike back with all the force this country could have used, astounds me. A total act of war.

Politics was never discussed much. It's not "polite conversation."

My parents never took part in anything our daughter did. My mother's brothers were both musicians, yet she never even made an effort to be at any of her performances. My dad and stepmom made one marching competition, but no one ever saw her in her 9 years of softball.

We didn't have a relationship, so I wasn't going to let them influence my child. They made no effort, neither did I.

They were respectful when they did get to see her, but it wasn't often.
