First World Problems...

To the extent that I am aware of her, I find Miley Cyrus to be distasteful, for all of the usual reasons: Hollywood pomposity, celebrity promiscuity, tattoos and piercings, aggressive hints of post-modern sexuality...all typical stuff.

But!

This is an absolutely spectacular version of Dolly Parton's "Jolene," and I have a hard time disliking someone who can do such a good job on this song.

17 Here's a first world problem for you: Power outages due to storm damage. Southeast Michigan got hammered last week - Detroit Edison had about 340,000 customer without power. So they do the right things, get the crews going, get 2500 linemen from out of state and they go to work. I have great respect for the guys putting the grid back together.

But management, for some reason, has to give these pie-in-the-sky estimates of when everyone will be back up. "Everyone will be up in 2 days." It's been 5 days for us. DTE is still saying everyone will be up by end of day tomorrow - there are just over 30,000 out now but their own outage map visible online shows that there are thousands of breaks with 2 to 5 customers. It is physically impossible to fix all these breaks in 36 hours.

I wish Detroit Edison would stop blowing smoke up our shorts and give factual estimates of how long we'll be out. That's my first world problem gripe.

My respect for linemen is almost unbounded. Post-Helene, I would stop and speak to them, expressing thanks for their work. This was in W. NC, some of the crews were from as far away as Montreal and Texas.

22 Here’s a first world problem:

Hunter Biden said “may have to” enter the 2028 presidential race in an interview Sunday, a notable shift from his previous dismissals of the idea.
Speaking with radio host John Catsimatidis on WABC’s “Cats Roundtable,” Biden was asked whether he had considered a White House bid. “If I get your endorsement, I may have to,” he told Catsimatidis, a billionaire grocery chain owner and ally of President Donald Trump. Biden added that his central concern would be the roughly 50 million Americans he said are still struggling with addiction.
Asked what would qualify him for office, Biden pointed to the Constitution rather than his own resume. “He is my qualification for becoming president, if you believe in the Constitution of the United States of America that you swear to uphold and protect,” he said, adding that he wants the next president “to commit to one thing: adhering to the rule of law.”

There is one song, that Dolly made for the opening of her DreamMore resort & spa at Dollywood, that is kept in a sort of time capsule which won’t be released until 2046.

53 I am working on a FWP in that I'm firing Chase bank. They've been taking $5 from my savings account any month my balance falls below $300. I can't remember the last time they paid any kind of interest on that balance, but I guess they now need a monthly cash infusion to keep the lights on.

There are several direct deposits that have to be rerouted, SS being the most significant. That will entail an office visit to confirm the turnaround time. Once I'm certain my new bank is online (I'm going with SoFi), Chase becomes a memory.

I kind of hope the branch manager doesn't involve himself and try to talk me out the decision. Got no beef with him and the staff has always been pleasant to deal with. They don't make the fee policy. If he asks, I'll briefly but firmly tell him that I can't afford to do business with organization that acts like I need it more than vice-versa..

87 Power outages were reason #37 for my CalExit last year. The night before Thanksgiving one year, they cut the power because it was too windy. Woke up the next morning to conditions that the Pilgrims would have related to. Thought about waiting for Squanto to show up and help me build a fire (oh wait, couldn't do that either because windy..), but wound up going to a friend's place and cooking both our dinners in his kitchen.

Power came back on that Friday evening...

Agreed - that's why we have the generator. And we were expecting 2 or maybe even 3 more days based on the huge number of line breaks with our outage being only 6 houses. Well, butter my biscuit and call me a butt because the power came on 45 minutes after my first post complaining.

Had I known the sheer power of the AoS comment process I would have bitched about this sooner.

We now have a snowblower that pulls you and I could do it. I might snowblow the entire neighborhood til the gas runs out, but I will try.

He got some sort of Kentucky Blue Grass (I think) that grows in the shade. Today I told him, "We've never had grass in parts of the yard!" I then told him if it doesn't grow this spring he's going to let nature do its thing. He agreed.

My hope and prayer is that stuff I've read state that other muscles sort of take over for this internal tear and they don't recommend surgery for this one. Especially at 72yrs. I can only imagine him on crutches for 6wks post op and trying to do stuff he should not.

Grateful in all things and that he is active. However, he got his OCD from his parents.

107 Update on the Saxony-Anhalt election:

With about 80% of all precincts counted, the AfD has about 46% of the vote, with most of the other parties, somehow, doing even worse than the exit poll earlier today predicted.

This still isn't enough for a majority of seats, because of the electoral math, but the wild card is that the BSW, a leftist but also pro-nationalist party that's shown some sympathy for the AfD, may draw just enough votes to be represented in the state assembly. In that case, the two parties together would have a majority.

Regardless, the establishment is freaking out, screaming that it's Nazism and 1933 all over again. As usual.

AfD is a standard leftwing economic policy party so if there really is a nationalist leftwing party it would make sense to partner.

And...you do have to laugh - AfD are NAZI-like because they want to stop giving welfare to immigrants which obviously was the problem with the NAZIs right?

Yes, but it's generally seen as having broader implications. Whatever else happens, the CDU can only keep the AfD out of power in Saxony-Anhalt by allying with all the Leftist parties, and that may cause such a backlash among its own voters as to cause a revolt in the Bundestag. If the AfD (or anyone else) tries to take advantage of that by calling a vote of no confidence, there's no telling what may happen.

Note too that another state (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), where the AfD is also very strong, will have elections in two weeks on the back of this.

They need 42 seats for a majority.
AfD currently has 39, last I looked.
The BWS party is a sort of center-left party that is against immigration (but for nearly every other lefty cause) and they have 5 seats.

The leader of BWS has indicated they can work with AfD, at least on some issues, so they may be able to form a coalition even without CDU.

We have to wait and see how it all shakes out as they get together and try to make deals this week.
