2026 Texas MoMe!

They Mome'n down in Texas!

The time has come to begin the discussion of the upcoming TXMoMe in Corsicana, TX on October 16-17. This is the eleventh annual TXMoMe, or Conservative Burning Man as it's popularly known, and it promises to be a doozy. A double-doozy even. A bigly double-doozy! If you're in either the Northern or Southern Hemisphere of the Planet of the Earth, contact Ben Had for details on attending. The dates and email links for all MoMes are always helpfully included on the blog's main page, left sidebar.

What started years ago as a small get-together and informal plinking session lasting a couple of hours has matured into a full scale jamboree-hootenanny including a program of shooting activities for both handguns and rifles over two days. I have to thank Ben Had, Cow Horse Queen and RancherBob for making this whole thing happen and providing the opportunity for the shooting to comprise such a significant portion of the event.

But wait! There's more! Combine that with world class food and drink, and the even world classier company of your fellow Morons, and you have a weekend that legends are made of. For those not inclined to shoot (?), there are non-stop opportunities to relax in the shade of the carport or under a handy nearby tree with a beverage and visit with your online pals to your hearts content, which is really what the whole damn thing is about in the first place..

Allow me to be serious for a minute. I have said this probably two hundred and eighty-three times now. These gatherings are a really good time, and I know of no one who expresses regret after having attended one. Actually it goes beyond that. It's not just a weekend of laughs, it's an opportunity to connect with lots of like-minded people and create lasting friendships and priceless memories. No kidding. Think that's hyperbole? It snot. Would your ol' pal Weasel lie to you? Well, yes he would, but not about this. TXMoMe veterans will attest to the funness and completely laid-back nature of the event. Don't be a dork, do yourself a favor and get yo' ass to Texas!

Specifics of the Friday/Saturday schedule of activities will be posted here in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

47 As far as a range report, went out last Friday with my nephew to get his new rifle sighted in. An AR-15 style in 5.56. I forget what optic he was using but it did well at 100 and 200 yards.

I had bought my rifle out for the 200 but I only put a couple shots on paper as my windage dial decided it was not loose enough. :-)

I put it away and believed I fixed the problem when I got home.
Will hit the range the week after this one to make sure it will be ready for next month in Texas.
Reminds me, I have to cut some foam for the Pelican case for the new rifle.
And I am also in the process of recreating something that I saw someone using up in New Hampshire to cool down the barrel faster.

49 My Colt Police Positive Special is a 4" 1918 gun by serial number. It's a "rescue" gun one of my co-workers told me about that one of his neighbors had. The neighbor was an elderly man in his nineties who had to go to a nursing home. The pistol had belonged to his father and grandfather, who, like him, had been police officers. The family was going to turn in the pistol to the police for destruction since they didn't think anyone would want the thing. My co-worker brought me over to see if I wanted it. The pistol itself has holster wear and worn finish on the left side where the thumb came into contact with it. It's in good shape considering that it was carried by three generations of cops. What made it noteworthy was that the original box had survived. it was badly worn, but it still had all the original paperwork, even the hang tag. I offered $375 cash for it. The family was surprised that it was worth anything, and they gladly took my cash offer. The late Phil Schirer is correct - most police sidearms (i.e. 4" and 6" barrels) are really undervalued compared to contemporary snubbies or the large caliber revolvers. This is still true today.

That is no "wobbly" sh*t. :-)

Everything was steady, but the screws on the windage loosened up enough where it did not click.
So tighted up and will need to see if I got the windage back to zero next time I go to the range.
Not worried about the elevation, that is locked in.

Up in NH one of the others shooting made a device to blow cool air through the barrel of the rifle.
He used one of the small hand held battery driven air pumps used to blowing up inflatable pool items attached to a small vinyl hose that at the end was an empty brass casing that fit inside the chamber.
The bottom of the casing was drilled out to permit air flow.
Stuck that into the chamber, turned on the fan and a large amount of air goes into the barrel cooling it down far faster than letting it cool by itself.

It was ingenious in its simplicity.

92 The pistol itself has holster wear and worn finish on the left side where the thumb came into contact with it. It's in good shape considering that it was carried by three generations of cops. What made it noteworthy was that the original box had survived. it was badly worn, but it still had all the original paperwork, even the hang tag. I offered $375 cash for it. The family was surprised that it was worth anything, and they gladly took my cash offer. The late Phil Schirer is correct - most police sidearms (i.e. 4" and 6" barrels) are really undervalued compared to contemporary snubbies or the large caliber revolvers. This is still true today.

Carried much and shot little and even now, you can get Model 10 or 66 in 38 Special for under $500, sometime well under. Colt Official Police and other old Colts like the Police Positive sometimes even bring less due to fear of them being shot loose (timing issues) and spart part issues. Few gunsmiths work on them anymore too.

95 I mentioned recently I bought a High Standard Sentinel .22 revolver. Since then, and a few hundred rounds through it, I am most pleased. Over the past couple weeks I've been on patrol through local shops looking for a two inch barrel birdshead grip variant to no avail. I did come across a S&W 351 C .22 WRM, liked it, and put a deposit on it until Tuesday. Going to be a nice CCW piece what with the arthritic hands. Now, any comments or suggestions as to the .22 WRM defense defense loads. I bought a box of Federal Punch they had in stock and will try Tuesday or Wednesday.

Last week, I traveled to Kansas City, where I donated my grandfather's Colt New Army Revolver Model 1892 (.38 cal, 6") to the National WWI Museum. He carried it in WWI, as a member of the 28th Division (Penna National Guard), through five campaigns, including Meuse-Argonne. He managed to emerge without a scratch, although he was bombed, strafed, gassed, and otherwise endured trench warfare. By war's end, he had risen to be the 103rd Engineer Regiment executive officer, as a captain, due to casualties and such combat actions. When he passed in 1973, my mother (his daughter) carried it back to New Mexico, on the flight from Philadelphia, in her purse. Where she gave it to me. I have had that pistol for more than 53 years (and fired it more than a few times, using .38 Long Colt ammo). But, it was time, so I donated it to be a part of our great nation's heritage, forthwith.

Whig, I checked the cylinder lock up for that pistol before buying it. A century after it left Colt, it still has a super tight lock up when the hammer drops; the cylinder is completely rock solid and won't wiggle at all.

You can buy factory made barrel cooling fans--try Midway perhaps. I've seen them online but irrelevant to my needs.

I can see it for benchrest but unless you like to do rapid fire exercises with a sporter contour barrel, dunno if it would be much use elsewise.

Two things contribute to barrel erosion--one is using double based powders with nitroglycerin in them (versus just nitrocellulose), the second is the particular cartridge--a lot of high efficiency cartridges are designed for both higher pressure and the commensurate heat that comes with that courtesy of the gas laws. Redline reloading and high velocity cartridges wear the throat of rifle barrels faster ceterus paribus.

IRRC, Chrome lined chambers and throats resists erosion from heat the most (assuming you cannot find stellite), nitrided barrels next, then comes stainless and chrome/moly.

Back off loads about ten percent and you get a lot less erosion as the progression is not quite linear. You also get less recoil (quantity of expelled gas contributes to recoil) and often as not, more accuracy.

Further, my State just reinstated the fall turkey season starting in 2027, since we got our population numbers to rebound.

If you have ever looked at the cylinder bolt of an 1899 action Colt (used until the late sixties when they went to new lockwork), you will notice two bevels on it. Amazing precision work done at Colt, often the final bit was handfitted. I like Smith and Wessons from the classic period as well but their lockwork, but not their accuracy, does not work to the same tolerances.

Nah. In a match you're only shooting 20-22 rounds so the barrel never gets that hot unless you wait to do all your shooting in the last 60 seconds (not recommended). They sell little chamber cooling fans commercially and a few guys had them but it always seemed to me like another thing to keep track of..

128 Ed - yes. From the Unit history, seems the engineers were often relegated to secondary and support tasks, like building fortifications and such, until well into the active campaigning. A lot of trial and error. He was issued his M1911 after the war - my older brother has that one. Also, grandfather enlisted in 1912 and was then commissioned by election the next year. He served on the Mexican Border during the Pancho Villa crisis. National Guard units were usually not given cutting edge equipment. And the engineers were a newish formation, in the chaos of the WWI build-up. Its a great story; someone should write a book about him. Oh, wait - I did.

131 Just playing for background, I have on a Tom Selleck western. One good thing is I believe Mr. Selleck has a lot of input into firearms used, and things are historically accurate. I hate 1873 Colts used in the civil war, or 92 Winchesters used any time before 1892. Selleck does know his stuff, being one of us and an avid collector. Hell, one of his flicks featured an Evans Rifle.

134 OddBob - good on you, it's a nice museum, well worth a visit. They have lots and lots of arms on display - you likely won't see his. I spent a year coordinating with the curators. Family donated uniforms, boots, helmets, bags, etc. The vast majority of their holdings (80%+) are not displayed. The Museum's main focus is historical heritage retention and preservation.

I set aside the week in October with vacation every year but there is always something else going on. An excuse. A nominal good reason.

TP and Ben Had have both reached out here, but as I have gotten older I have found myself more and more antisocial. My apologies to both, but I drop into avoid mode on the internet way too easy. This is a personal issue I need to work on.

I do encourage everyone to go if you can. It is good to meet like-minded people and just relax for a bit.

Maybe PA didn't have the political pull other states did. I have a M1911 (SN in the low 2400's) that ended up going to the MO National Guard's 3rd Missouri Regiment (later, 140th Infantry), probably in mid to late 1912. The officer who got it (regimental adjutant) probably purchased it because he had his name and unit engraved on it. Officers could do that with their sidearms until January 1942. Did your grandfather do that, or did he "acquire" that revolver when he went home after the war? That would definitely be possible since the Army would have been eager to ditch all of the obsolete handguns that had outstayed their welcome due to the war.

155 Speaking of barrel cooling and the extent bench rest shooters go to, I remember a guy that used to come in to our friend of a friend range in Ohio. True bench rest guy, very heavy barrel like it was bored out of 1.5 bar stock, huge stock, old school Unertl scope. This guy would fire a round and then reload the same case with a Lee Loader and a Lee powder scoop. 20 rounds per hour would probably be rapid fire, but those quarter inch groups were impressive.

Yep. You will see those marketed as sporter profile and such. Designed to be carried and used for hunting but not shot a whole bunch. The heavier the profile of the barrel (such as little or no tapering), the more it acts as a heat sink for long periods of being fired without changing its zero much if at all. Want to see how many profiles a barrel can have, go to a custom barrel maker like Shaw, Douglas, etc. and you often have as many as 7-10 barrel profiles and weight to choose from.

That's why SOCOM, then the Army switched to the SOCOM heavy barrel in the current M4A1 after experiencing similar issues in thinner "government profile" barrels in M4s. That said, the Army was seeing weapons fail (burst gas tubes, barrel droop) after prolonged periods of full auto fire.

174 Ed - good stuff. Grandad was an old fashioned kinda guy. And the sidearms seemed to be an individual choice. He carried the revolver on the Mexican Border, and then WWI. In WWII he had switched to the M1911, although he still kept the Colt revolver. Neither had any personal markings. According to the Colt Authentication letter, the revolver was shipped to a private arms company; grandad my have bought it, rather than been issued. Who knows?

For awhile, one of the long distance record holders did something similar. I think Weasel-san's teaching though of fundamentals and wind reading is probably more important than the hardware that people use.

Most people are not able to shoot up the limits of their own equipment especially at distance, myself included.

But following Weasel-san's path to accuracy gets you a helluva lot closer for a lot less than buying expensive rifles that are ultra accurate and spraying bullets across the target. Those in the right hands can be accurate, but that takes time, training, and experience.

In WWI and WWII, significant numbers of draftees flunked the military induction physical because of poor nutrition in the draft pool. Audie Murphy was initially turned down by the Army, Army Air Corps, and Marines because he was considered underweight for his height. The school lunch program was originally created to remedy this problem.

My favorite comparison is the No. 1, Mk 3 versus the later No 4 Lee Enfields. The No. 1 has a longer thinner barrel than the later WWII era No. 4 Lee Enfield. Australians, because Lithgow kept making the No. 1 longer than the UK, put massive bull barrels on them to get them to shoot.

But the designers of the No. 1 did have a few tricks up their sleeve, barrel bracing and upwards spring pressure at the muzzle. So in its war time dress with the full stock and furniture for the stock, the No. 1 could be accurate enough to serve as a sniper rifle in the trenches. Not as accurate as the P14 or even the Ross rifle, but accurate enough.

The No. 4 left off the trick springs, and such and went with a heavier and shorter barrel. And that meant more accuracy and the No. 4 is far easier to accurize than the No. 1. The No. 1 without its stock and furniture is wildly inaccurate unless you cut the barrel length.

Cheaper and less heartache. There is no short path to enlightenment or being an accurate rifle shooter. For that reason, I have been dry firing and finally finished cleaning, checking rifles, etc.

Next comes using a barrel collimator set I picked up to check approximate zeroes for optics. Have a green laser sighter up to 100 yards to then check up on the collimator. I have a lot of old iron sighted rifles and a few with optics that need checked. Sights are fussy work.

There's a movie 'Resident Evil' coming out soon based on the video game. Apparently, in the video game, every bullet matters. I'm not a gamer, but if you're fighting undead with limited ammo, much more exciting.

Apparently, in the movie from a few articles I've read, managing ammunition is apparently a big part of the horror.

Which is actually pretty cool. I can only imagine how many movies you just ignore gun unrealities.

Private purchase sidearms, especially among the officer corps, was common practice throughout both WWI and WWII. This was less common among the enlisted ranks, but it did happen. Sgt. "Tab" Talbert ("Band of Brothers") got a .45 revolver from his hometown police chief, and Lee Marvin had a commercial .45 Government Model his parents had purchased for him when he landed on Saipan.

Versus under-nutrition, stunting, etc following the Depression. Hmm. SAD!

The 308 version can be decently accurate as in 3-4 MOA but there are a few tricks. One, the No. 1 prefers something like about 6-7 lbs upward pressure at the bore assuming it is wearing full battle rattle. So make sure that the front spring under the sight guard/bayonet lug is new and there is a second spring under the sight protector nut at the bottom of the spring. Change that out for new too.

And, if you can, change out the sight leaf for the earlier windage adjustable version (these were dropped as an economy measure about 1916). The older sight leaf allows you to make L-R windage adjustments without trying to drift the front sight.

And, last but not last, the Enfields had a variety of front sights designed for different zero ranges and rifle variances. The No. 1 can use No. 4 front sights and vice versa--the No. 4 is distinguised by the split in the dovetail for the sight blade while the older No. 1 type are solid.

Not as many as the MAS36 (I think they had something like 16-20 different rear sight leafs for that).

Well, the Austrians, Germans, and French all shared 8mm but the bullet diameters vary a bit. The original 8x57 bullet used a round nose which is why the GEW 88 or Commission rifle has a .318 diameter instead of the later .323 German Spitzer bullet. The French used 8mm but in a .327 diameter from the get go when they went smokeless in the Lebel from necking down their old blackpowder Gras case. Austrians 8x56 used a .329 diameter.

Same variance in bullet size in 6.5 Greek, 6.5 Italian, and 6.5 Swede.

Possibly. Dunno. But then again, I like firing old military rifles where a 4-5 MOA at 100 yards using iron sights can be fun. I have my own rituals which is mainly trying to block out how much 'fun' my shoulder can take from some of them. The full battle rifles are not bad in most issued cartridges but the shorter carbines can be rather unpleasant. The M44 and M38 Mosins for example.

Unfortunately, yes. The Army had to put together "pre-basic" physical education classes to get its recruits into good enough shape to survive the first weeks of basic training. I understand most of it is strength training, running, and losing weight (read: flab). Without it, attrition rates in basic due to flunking the PT test were way too high. The Army's PT test isn't that challenging: 60 pushups in two minutes, 50-60 situps in two minutes, and a 16 minute, 30 seconds two mile run should be enough to pass with some margin to spare. Apparently, today's recruits couldn't pass that standard. And that was what was in place 40 years ago when I joined ROTC.

I didn't watch the show but I seem to recall Ian McCollum pointing that out. I was taught to operate an M1 by an old guy* and the very first thing he taught me was how to not do that.

246 This week in firearms consisted of finding and locating a bridle piece for my Trapdoor lock. Trying and failing to solder a rear rifle sight on my 1888 Commission aka GEW88 rifle. So I epoxied it instead.

Worked on an old Berthier carbine stock in preparation for mounting a complete action to it. Put a front sight blade on an Enfield barreled receiver and mounted it to a Numrich replica forend.

That is a WWII era Lithgow DP receiver which I turned into a dummy training rifle as it has a nice big hole in the barrel. Used up a lot of Lee Enfield parts I accumulated over the years. Mounted and fitted a new old stock buttstock to it as well. Takes a bit of rasping.

And found and acquired a handguard for the 8x56 Austrian Ruck Zuck that had a splintered one.

Plus I cleaned and lubed enough rifles to field a platoon.

I always passed the pushups and sit-ups. I almost always maxed the run. I liked running. When I was in high school I was like Matthew Modine in Vision Quest. I ran everywhere. But I was not an insufferable dickweed like Modine is.

I have a Chilean 7x57 carbine and yes, even with that relatively mild cartridge by today's standards. It can kick quite a bit in a carbine. I am a wussy and used a PAST shoulder pad because I had it for shooting shotgun slugs. Those steel buttplates don't help.

I think a lot of my carbines are going to be the first to go when the first culling occurs soon. I am busy fixing up punch lists for each right now and figuring out which ones I will keep.

The whole clip feed system was silly and one reason I don't like the Garand as much as some others do. Garand designed it original for a box magazine but Ordnance had a cow and demanded that be struck off early on in the development process. They also struck off the Mannlicher style clips which when empty fall out the bottom of the action. The reason was to avoid dirt in the action. So that left the kludge clip system.

Beretta with the BM-59 did it right with a box magazine refit of their Garands. And I think they actually made a few receivers or restamped them in Italy as well.

256 Oh, nearly forgot, did some work on a frozen elevation slide on a 71/84 Mauser and got it free for probably the first time in decades. Penetrating oil, a bit of wiggling, and gentle tapping. Took most of the afternoon for the oil to soak in and penetrate until I finally got it free.

I was discussing Colt manufacturing on their handguns earlier and like that, the Mauser 71/84 shows just how precise the Germans could be on their Mausers with amazing close fit tolerances and the attention to detail with locking screws to lock key function screws.

I have three Oberndorf (original Mauser factory in Oberndorf Germany) model 98 rifles, A WWI era, a late 30's model, and a mid WWII model. All of them spec out at exactly the same distance from the receiver ring to the barrel locking surface within the receiver to the nearest 100ths of an inch.

Eh, simply get the old straight stock Springfield and teach people what happens when you take your trigger hand thumb and place it across the rear of the tang. Voila, the reason it was called the Bloody Nose Stock by troops.

Then there is scope eye when you get just a little to close to the scope when firing to try to see just a bit better. And you find out eye relief is a thing.

263 Spent some time while I was working on mounting the No 1 dummy rifle this week and marveling at the fine trigger action that the Brits came up with on the Lee Enfields. One of the great two stage trigger systems and wisely kept for the Model 4 (along with the Springfield, Krag, and Swiss rifles).

The Brits saved their finest finish work not for screws and things but for sights, sears, cocking, and trigger surfaces. And the Lee Enfield and old Mausers are drop safe with the safety applied which a lot of modern sporting rifles are not.

The firing pin is levered back by their safeties so that even if dropped the firing pin cannot reach the primer.

I have to start back to the beginning with my 22 LR rifles first. Practicing shouldering and snapping off shots is one thing, range is something else. It has been about 6 years since I fired a rifle, about 4 since I fired an handgun. Dry fire yes, range time no. Now, grip strength is back to over 100 lbs per hand (got down to forty), and my back has improved enough to shoot light recoiling rounds. Doc wants a full year before battle rifle rounds.

6.5 Grendel/7.62x39/6.8 SPC is probably my ceiling right now.

268 Oh, I meant to ask you Weasel, I have that long action Remington 700 receiver that is still lacking a barrel. In the interim, I inherited a couple of hunting rifles (Savage 11 in 308 and a Remington R700 with a Jewell trigger in 270 Win).

So, I thought being a long action, I might either go with a 6mm Remington (Remington and a few others still make ammo for it and brass is available/can be fireformed), or perhaps a 6.5 Swede. The downside for the Swede would be that I have old milsurps and would have to keep loads down to what they could handle.

But the 6mm Remington can be seated a bit longer than spec than a 243 Win and has a bit more capacity in powder. Gentle enough recoil.

So what do you think?

I thought about the 270 AI or the more sedate 270 Remington but the 6mm Remington has quite a bit less recoil and is on par with 243 Winchester accuracy.

Part of the attraction for the 270 was that I had 7mm bullets already for the 7x57 (mid and heavy) and 270 (mid) and 6.8 SPC (light)

Don't have any 6mm currently but due to the craze for 6mm in different chamberings recently, there is now a broad choice of bullets.

Swede 6.5 is an old Euro cartridge so plenty of choice there as well and I already reload it.

300 yards is about the limit in ranges around here unless you join a really expensive club.

273 I took the grandson to the range today to sight in his new to him Ruger Model 77 in 7 mm Remington Magnum.
He has decided he wants to go to elk camp with his buddies from work.
He works at a place in Idaho where if they are not careful they glow in the dark, so I sent him the nuke meltdown video.
After our day at the range we were both confident that in good conditions any elk he sees up to 400 yards will go home to his freezer to feed his family.
