2026 Texas MoMe!

They Mome'n down in Texas!

The time has come to begin the discussion of the upcoming TXMoMe in Corsicana, TX on October 16-17. This is the eleventh annual TXMoMe, or Conservative Burning Man as it's popularly known, and it promises to be a doozy. A double-doozy even. A bigly double-doozy! If you're in either the Northern or Southern Hemisphere of the Planet of the Earth, contact Ben Had for details on attending. The dates and email links for all MoMes are always helpfully included on the blog's main page, left sidebar.

What started years ago as a small get-together and informal plinking session lasting a couple of hours has matured into a full scale jamboree-hootenanny including a program of shooting activities for both handguns and rifles over two days. I have to thank Ben Had, Cow Horse Queen and RancherBob for making this whole thing happen and providing the opportunity for the shooting to comprise such a significant portion of the event.

But wait! There's more! Combine that with world class food and drink, and the even world classier company of your fellow Morons, and you have a weekend that legends are made of. For those not inclined to shoot (?), there are non-stop opportunities to relax in the shade of the carport or under a handy nearby tree with a beverage and visit with your online pals to your hearts content, which is really what the whole damn thing is about in the first place..

Allow me to be serious for a minute. I have said this probably two hundred and eighty-three times now. These gatherings are a really good time, and I know of no one who expresses regret after having attended one. Actually it goes beyond that. It's not just a weekend of laughs, it's an opportunity to connect with lots of like-minded people and create lasting friendships and priceless memories. No kidding. Think that's hyperbole? It snot. Would your ol' pal Weasel lie to you? Well, yes he would, but not about this. TXMoMe veterans will attest to the funness and completely laid-back nature of the event. Don't be a dork, do yourself a favor and get yo' ass to Texas!

Specifics of the Friday/Saturday schedule of activities will be posted here in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

47 As far as a range report, went out last Friday with my nephew to get his new rifle sighted in. An AR-15 style in 5.56. I forget what optic he was using but it did well at 100 and 200 yards.

I had bought my rifle out for the 200 but I only put a couple shots on paper as my windage dial decided it was not loose enough. :-)

I put it away and believed I fixed the problem when I got home.
Will hit the range the week after this one to make sure it will be ready for next month in Texas.
Reminds me, I have to cut some foam for the Pelican case for the new rifle.
And I am also in the process of recreating something that I saw someone using up in New Hampshire to cool down the barrel faster.

49 My Colt Police Positive Special is a 4" 1918 gun by serial number. It's a "rescue" gun one of my co-workers told me about that one of his neighbors had. The neighbor was an elderly man in his nineties who had to go to a nursing home. The pistol had belonged to his father and grandfather, who, like him, had been police officers. The family was going to turn in the pistol to the police for destruction since they didn't think anyone would want the thing. My co-worker brought me over to see if I wanted it. The pistol itself has holster wear and worn finish on the left side where the thumb came into contact with it. It's in good shape considering that it was carried by three generations of cops. What made it noteworthy was that the original box had survived. it was badly worn, but it still had all the original paperwork, even the hang tag. I offered $375 cash for it. The family was surprised that it was worth anything, and they gladly took my cash offer. The late Phil Schirer is correct - most police sidearms (i.e. 4" and 6" barrels) are really undervalued compared to contemporary snubbies or the large caliber revolvers. This is still true today.

Bacon wrapped around the barrel helps it radiate heat faster.

That is no "wobbly" sh*t. :-)

Everything was steady, but the screws on the windage loosened up enough where it did not click.
So tighted up and will need to see if I got the windage back to zero next time I go to the range.
Not worried about the elevation, that is locked in.

Up in NH one of the others shooting made a device to blow cool air through the barrel of the rifle.
He used one of the small hand held battery driven air pumps used to blowing up inflatable pool items attached to a small vinyl hose that at the end was an empty brass casing that fit inside the chamber.
The bottom of the casing was drilled out to permit air flow.
Stuck that into the chamber, turned on the fan and a large amount of air goes into the barrel cooling it down far faster than letting it cool by itself.

It was ingenious in its simplicity.

92 The pistol itself has holster wear and worn finish on the left side where the thumb came into contact with it. It's in good shape considering that it was carried by three generations of cops. What made it noteworthy was that the original box had survived. it was badly worn, but it still had all the original paperwork, even the hang tag. I offered $375 cash for it. The family was surprised that it was worth anything, and they gladly took my cash offer. The late Phil Schirer is correct - most police sidearms (i.e. 4" and 6" barrels) are really undervalued compared to contemporary snubbies or the large caliber revolvers. This is still true today.

Carried much and shot little and even now, you can get Model 10 or 66 in 38 Special for under $500, sometime well under. Colt Official Police and other old Colts like the Police Positive sometimes even bring less due to fear of them being shot loose (timing issues) and spart part issues. Few gunsmiths work on them anymore too.

95 I mentioned recently I bought a High Standard Sentinel .22 revolver. Since then, and a few hundred rounds through it, I am most pleased. Over the past couple weeks I've been on patrol through local shops looking for a two inch barrel birdshead grip variant to no avail. I did come across a S&W 351 C .22 WRM, liked it, and put a deposit on it until Tuesday. Going to be a nice CCW piece what with the arthritic hands. Now, any comments or suggestions as to the .22 WRM defense defense loads. I bought a box of Federal Punch they had in stock and will try Tuesday or Wednesday.

Last week, I traveled to Kansas City, where I donated my grandfather's Colt New Army Revolver Model 1892 (.38 cal, 6") to the National WWI Museum. He carried it in WWI, as a member of the 28th Division (Penna National Guard), through five campaigns, including Meuse-Argonne. He managed to emerge without a scratch, although he was bombed, strafed, gassed, and otherwise endured trench warfare. By war's end, he had risen to be the 103rd Engineer Regiment executive officer, as a captain, due to casualties and such combat actions. When he passed in 1973, my mother (his daughter) carried it back to New Mexico, on the flight from Philadelphia, in her purse. Where she gave it to me. I have had that pistol for more than 53 years (and fired it more than a few times, using .38 Long Colt ammo). But, it was time, so I donated it to be a part of our great nation's heritage, forthwith.

Whig, I checked the cylinder lock up for that pistol before buying it. A century after it left Colt, it still has a super tight lock up when the hammer drops; the cylinder is completely rock solid and won't wiggle at all.

You can buy factory made barrel cooling fans--try Midway perhaps. I've seen them online but irrelevant to my needs.

I can see it for benchrest but unless you like to do rapid fire exercises with a sporter contour barrel, dunno if it would be much use elsewise.

Two things contribute to barrel erosion--one is using double based powders with nitroglycerin in them (versus just nitrocellulose), the second is the particular cartridge--a lot of high efficiency cartridges are designed for both higher pressure and the commensurate heat that comes with that courtesy of the gas laws. Redline reloading and high velocity cartridges wear the throat of rifle barrels faster ceterus paribus.

IRRC, Chrome lined chambers and throats resists erosion from heat the most (assuming you cannot find stellite), nitrided barrels next, then comes stainless and chrome/moly.

Back off loads about ten percent and you get a lot less erosion as the progression is not quite linear. You also get less recoil (quantity of expelled gas contributes to recoil) and often as not, more accuracy.

If you have ever looked at the cylinder bolt of an 1899 action Colt (used until the late sixties when they went to new lockwork), you will notice two bevels on it. Amazing precision work done at Colt, often the final bit was handfitted. I like Smith and Wessons from the classic period as well but their lockwork, but not their accuracy, does not work to the same tolerances.

Nah. In a match you're only shooting 20-22 rounds so the barrel never gets that hot unless you wait to do all your shooting in the last 60 seconds (not recommended). They sell little chamber cooling fans commercially and a few guys had them but it always seemed to me like another thing to keep track of..

128 Ed - yes. From the Unit history, seems the engineers were often relegated to secondary and support tasks, like building fortifications and such, until well into the active campaigning. A lot of trial and error. He was issued his M1911 after the war - my older brother has that one. Also, grandfather enlisted in 1912 and was then commissioned by election the next year. He served on the Mexican Border during the Pancho Villa crisis. National Guard units were usually not given cutting edge equipment. And the engineers were a newish formation, in the chaos of the WWI build-up. Its a great story; someone should write a book about him. Oh, wait - I did.

131 Just playing for background, I have on a Tom Selleck western. One good thing is I believe Mr. Selleck has a lot of input into firearms used, and things are historically accurate. I hate 1873 Colts used in the civil war, or 92 Winchesters used any time before 1892. Selleck does know his stuff, being one of us and an avid collector. Hell, one of his flicks featured an Evans Rifle.

134 OddBob - good on you, it's a nice museum, well worth a visit. They have lots and lots of arms on display - you likely won't see his. I spent a year coordinating with the curators. Family donated uniforms, boots, helmets, bags, etc. The vast majority of their holdings (80%+) are not displayed. The Museum's main focus is historical heritage retention and preservation.

When donating something of value to a museum, like a gun, or a vehicle, can the donor place restrictions upon what the museum does with the piece? As in: don't sell it; don't destroy it; don't display it in a disrespectful way?

It was a lot of fun to see people in the flesh.

I set aside the week in October with vacation every year but there is always something else going on. An excuse. A nominal good reason.

TP and Ben Had have both reached out here, but as I have gotten older I have found myself more and more antisocial. My apologies to both, but I drop into avoid mode on the internet way too easy. This is a personal issue I need to work on.

I do encourage everyone to go if you can. It is good to meet like-minded people and just relax for a bit.

At FLW when I asked about the process, they said - its a handshake. And so it was. KC was a tad more formal - a single page that said, "my grandfather's artifacts" and my signature. No listing or any formal record.

Maybe PA didn't have the political pull other states did. I have a M1911 (SN in the low 2400's) that ended up going to the MO National Guard's 3rd Missouri Regiment (later, 140th Infantry), probably in mid to late 1912. The officer who got it (regimental adjutant) probably purchased it because he had his name and unit engraved on it. Officers could do that with their sidearms until January 1942. Did your grandfather do that, or did he "acquire" that revolver when he went home after the war? That would definitely be possible since the Army would have been eager to ditch all of the obsolete handguns that had outstayed their welcome due to the war.

155 Speaking of barrel cooling and the extent bench rest shooters go to, I remember a guy that used to come in to our friend of a friend range in Ohio. True bench rest guy, very heavy barrel like it was bored out of 1.5 bar stock, huge stock, old school Unertl scope. This guy would fire a round and then reload the same case with a Lee Loader and a Lee powder scoop. 20 rounds per hour would probably be rapid fire, but those quarter inch groups were impressive.

Yep. You will see those marketed as sporter profile and such. Designed to be carried and used for hunting but not shot a whole bunch. The heavier the profile of the barrel (such as little or no tapering), the more it acts as a heat sink for long periods of being fired without changing its zero much if at all. Want to see how many profiles a barrel can have, go to a custom barrel maker like Shaw, Douglas, etc. and you often have as many as 7-10 barrel profiles and weight to choose from.

Swapped EDC from G21 to XD45, because the damn IWB holster I have for my Glocks is cheap. The XD45 at least buttons and stays in place. Also I like the XD45 quite a bit so, no harm there.

That's why SOCOM, then the Army switched to the SOCOM heavy barrel in the current M4A1 after experiencing similar issues in thinner "government profile" barrels in M4s. That said, the Army was seeing weapons fail (burst gas tubes, barrel droop) after prolonged periods of full auto fire.
