Saturday Night Club ONT - September 5, 2026 [Disco & Dino]

20260831-IMG_20260831_1055249621.jpg

Welcome to Club ONT - a whelming collaboration of The Disco and The Dino.

Open thread - bar is open, too. Come in in, grab a drink or 2. Or 3. Keep it light and friendly. The moose out front is on troll patrol, so say a word of thanks as you pass by that the moose is on duty.

*****

Saturday Night Jokes and Other Funnies

My son came home from school and said: “Dad, I got a part in the school play, I play a man who's been married 30 years."

I replied: “Maybe next time you'll get a speaking part."

-----

A man loses three fingers in a work accident.

At the hospital he asks the doctor, “Will I be able to drive with this hand?"

The doctor replies, "Maybe. But I wouldn't count on it."

-----

My wife asked me, "Why don't you treat me like you did when we were first dating?"

So I took her to dinner and a movie then dropped her off at her parents' house.

16 I kind of get what douchebot Ryan Reynolds was saying, even though he was a kid in the 80's and doesnt know jack. According to the media, we were going to die in a nuclear holocaust (because of Reagan), if the AIDS (which was also Reagan's fault) didn't get you first. There was a lot of Cold War tension.

I had a bitchin time in that blessed decade, in the full flower of my youthful idiocy.

Spoonbread is a moist cornmeal dish from the Southern United States that’s soft enough to be served and eaten with a spoon. It’s baked with cornmeal, milk, butter, and eggs, and it comes out more like a savory pudding than crumbly cornbread.

I'm right across the border. There have been a few anti-Abdul ads. The "I am dangerous" ones.

MS Now had a segment where they showed President Trump had $403 million to spend. Others here pointed out they were probably waiting about 5 weeks before the election.

So, enjoy any non-political ads now.

Mike Rogers has had a few nice ads but the ones linking him to high gas prices were kind of brutal.

I still believe a ton of the electorate doesn't pay attention. We're here and know stuff. But CNN had less than 700,000 viewers, MS Now - about 1,700,000.

AI says the nightly broadcasts to the elderly and shut-ins is about 20 million.

CBC had a segment about Canada's trade war with the US. By the way, you're in a trade war with Canada if you didn't know. They featured Abdul.

But I really wondered, how many people did they have to talk to before they found people knowing about sanctions.

Yay!! On time. Chat just finished. Trillions of dollars - AMERICAN DOLLARS - are being spent on AI and I just contributed....give me a second..

137 Evening, ever'body,

We just finished watching Dark Angel, an historical BBC drama about one Mary Ann Cotton (aka Mowbray), a 19th-century Scots woman who murdered with arsenic between 13 and 21 people . . . a lot of them her family, including several children, a couple of husbands, and her own mother. Joann Froggatt of Downton Abbey fame plays the title role, and is superb.

It's a downer of a film, as you might expect from the subject matter, and is filmed in a lot of scenes with that dim blue lighting that everybody uses nowadays. But it's gripping.

150 Last night we watched 2006's Hollywoodland, about the mystery surrounding the death of George Reeves in 1959. A depressing movie too, and it never gets up the courage to say, "Here's what really happened with George's death"; instead it plays with three different scenarios.

I guess what I hate is Adrien Brody as the "private eye" doing the investigation. He's hardly leading man material, even after the Seventies changed what a leading man could look like. He has a nose like a hatchet blade, and is spindly as well. At least we get Ben Affleck as George, and he's excellent; Robin Tunney, as Reeves's fiancee at the time of his death; and her friend, played by 90210's Kathleen Robertson.

Seconds later. Across the street. Same alarm, Very loud. And two more time further and further away. In my 28.5 years, I never heard that before.

192 TATU was an interesting phenomenon at the time

Some Russian guy thought he could sell music if he got a couple of girls with some music talent to do standard pop while pretending to be lesbians.

And...it worked. Hard as it is to believe now everything wasn't gay in the early 00s. But TATU came out right as the west wanted to make everything gay (and soon after, lame).

Neither of the girls actually are gay. One of them went on to move on to other music ventures and the other decided to get on the Big Gay grift (even though she is straight) which was in the end not a good pick in Russia.

Violet McGraw was the girl there.

Her sister, Madeleine, played Gwen in "The Black Phone" movies. She won a Chainsaw Award for the first one - she was great and that was a nice movie.

They've been together in a 'Necklace' movie. But for horror movies, they're doing well.

DisneyChannel had a show "The Secrets of Sulphur Springs' and Madeleine was a younger sister and didnt' get much screen time to the third season. THAT was a GREAT show. Creepy. Ghosts. Time portal.

First season 11 episodes I think. Second and third were 8. It wasn't cheap to make.

The father bought a run down hotel he stayed at as a kid in order to renovate. His wife WAS PISSED. As an adult, she was pissed. There were a lot of money arguments and adult stuff which was surprising for a show that was number 1 for girls 6 to 12 or whatever.

And time portals.

It also took place in one summer over 3 seasons. And the kids grew like anything but it was handled well.

I just watched it. If I'm understanding the call by the officials, they were saying that on the throw the Safety for Western Michigan (Micah Davis) touched the ball in the back of the endzone before the clock hit zero. HOWEVER, the replay actually shows that the clock HAD hit zero before the touch. NBC's Officiating expert, Terry McAulay, confirmed that, and said the ONLY way the call is correct is if the media clock was not synched up to the game clock. It's since been confirmed that the synch was proper, and there was no difference in the official game clock and the media clock.

So, yeah, Western Michigan was truly and royally screwed.

250 Well, I am still here. It was cool and gloomy here today, so I sat in the shop and rendered out three old car alternators. One Delco, two Bosch. Lot more work to get the copper out of them than it is from starters or generators. But I persevered, and got all three stripped. I have a 12 ton hand-pumped hydraulic press. It does not have enough force to press the shaft out of alternator rotors.

279 Meanwhile back at the ranch, DH and I went to a memorial for my friend Sabrina who died in an airplane crash August 20 at Cape Newenham. We took a good friend who was the PM on the project and decided who got on the plane. THAT's a heavy load to carry. He said he sent men into harm's way in Afghanistan but never lost a soul, but this time....

From what he told us, they were lucky to find a few teeth at the wreckage, because it burned on impact. Literally nothing left of my good friend and colleague. So, no funeral per se, but a lot of people standing up and telling great stories about her. Her son is 17, and finally straightened out after a lot of struggle, so there is light at the end of that tunnel.

Met some folks I knew in other parts of life who also knew her, through hockey and other things. She touched a lot of lives and made them better. She was much to young to go. I hope Jesus is happy, because not many of us are, right now.

Well, that would do it, but would also burn the copper wire I am trying to salvage. And acetylene is expensive, too.

I think I have the answer. Use abrasive cutoff wheel to cut the shaft flush with the face of the pole piece next to the slip rings. Chuck it in the lathe, center drill the cut end, and drill successively larger holes to a depth of about a half inch. Drill big enough, and pole piece falls off. Wire can then be easily spun off end of spool.

Yeah we found some ancient abandoned military bunkers off of this road to what looked like barrier islands. We could see Atlantic city way out in the distance. That whole area of jersey is crazy. You got really nice roads through the pine barrens that take you to shore towns. There's hardly any cars on them. We went through some cranberry bogs and probably rode 10 miles before seeing a car, but you do see a lot of bikes though, and an average ride is 100-150 miles. We went over a few small bridges over this smaller waterways, maybe lagoons, and went to this huge marina bar that always attracts bikes. You'll see 100 bikes easy. People come from hours away to ride those roads. Its all in non touristy shore areas. Forest like areas bordering shore areas. Its crazy how fast the scenery changes.

Posted by: four seasons at September 06, 2026 01:24 AM (/QHx4)

Sad, but not gone entirely, if you remember. That's what memories are for.

I have an indelible memory of sitting in the recliner in my parents' house when I was probably about six years old, watching the lights on the ceiling reflected from the Christmas tree, with a couple of blinker lights on it, so the lights moved a bit, and listening to Ave Maria on the turntable. I don't know why that is a complete picture in my mind, but I don't think I had ever felt so absolutely and entirely blessed in my life, and I suppose that sticks with me. Moments of God's grace, if you will. I didn't know God then, but He knew me.

I suspect if you dig deep into your family background, you can dredge up those moments, too.

Enjoy the peace, even if it isn't there any more. The grace remains.

Hubby and I are so blessed. Oldest son met and married the love of his life. His love of his life died giving birth to our first grandchild.

God blessed us all when he remarried and son and wife had three more children.

We cherish the memory of Courtney. She gave us all a
wonderful gift and we will never forget Courtney.

316 Well, that bike is a Fat Boy, and I just now looked up the bikes from the movie, and it sure looks like them. Apparently 4 or 5 similar Fat Boys were used for the filming; so this could be one of them. ONe article said that the present location of two of them is unknown.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 06, 2026 01:31 AM (1z8ji)

I like fatboys. I never got around to owning one because I have 2 heritages, and the fatboy is a stripped heritage. They are both softails. Take a heritage, remove the saddlebags and windshield, replace the spoke wheels with solid wheels and stick the fatboy's scalloped front fender on it and you just built a fatboy.

My mother's side is wiped out. Her and her whole family is gone. All thats left are a few of my cousins, and we barley see them. A few of those are dead and some of the ones alive moved out of state. My father's side though, his siblings are all alive, as are the cousins, but they are weird mofos and I don't care to see them anyway. It all shit the bed once my grandmother on my father's side died. She used to have the christmas eve dinner from hell. My mother's one sister did the huge thanksgiving, her other sister did the huge easter thing, so when then died that went out the window. After my mom died that was it. Nothing was the same.

We (other kids) knew it wouldn't work, even IF Dad had put *all* our names on the deed. Big bro was always a bossy, selfish mofo and would continue to bully us, as always, about the place and disregard any of our plans to stay there without him showing up.

So, it's all his. All the bills, too. But for some reason, big bro is pissed.

(Because the other 3 of us, are not footing "our" 3/4 of the bills. Too bad, so sad. He wanted it, and now he's got it!)

We aren't mad that he locked us out. We expected it.

333 JQ, I am sorry that you got screwed out of that, and your little bro should be pissed off about it too. You should organize a protest that they are occupying stolen land outside of the lake house. I really am sorry that families suck so much of the time. All of my stuff is getting divided five ways after I am gone. That is what is fair, but I really hope that there are no bailouts to the one suffering from ergophobia.

I watch Maine Cabin Masters a lot, those lake house usually keep families together, the power of shared memories. Many of my cousins had cottages or beach houses passed down in the family, I did not.

I can't tell you how stupid this is. The Erf is a sphere (well, an oblate ellipsoid to next order). It thus has intrinsic curvature and can't be mapped to a flat plane without distortion.

350 Did you hear about Burning Man? There's a rumor going around that it's majority middle-aged. That's a death knell, since it's a youth worship fest.

I've never been to either Burning Man or a swingers' convention, but that won't stop me from making a comparison. See, I've read tragicomic descriptions of the rapid death of sex fests that allow single men. You will only see ones that allow single women and couples only, because the ones that allow single men are uncomfortable for women, so fewer go the next year, and it very rapidly descends into a sausage fest of angry straight dudes desperately prowling for a hint of estrogen.

And that is my mental model for how rapidly Burning Man could crack up over this, if it can't be disproven. Because even the middle-aged people aren't going there to be seen as such.
