Thursday Overnight Open Thread - September 3, 2026

doof-j-pond-aug2026.jpg

Howdy Hordelings! Welcome to the Thursday ONT! Mixed bag of content for those who care. Open thread, as always. What's on YOUR mind tonight?

Hey Ryan Reynolds - STFU

Not sure what's worse -- the way he speaks (ya know, like, like, like, ya know) or what he says.

Seriously, dude - shut up. The 80s were awesome, and you're not.

New Mexico Man >>>> Florida Man

At least in this particular situation. Man Rolls Up to Police Station With Pickup Truck Full of Torn Up Flock Cameras

While most of the vandals ripping down automatic license plate readers prefer to go incognito, an Albuquerque character named Jevon Martinez isn’t afraid to show his face.

Weeks after Bernalillo county officials cancelled their contract with the controversial surveillance company Flock earlier this year, Martinez noticed the automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) were still up. In a series of videos posted on social media and flagged by KOB4, Martinez filmed himself tearing the camera towers down in order to return them to their rightful owners.

“Since [Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department] is busy — I know BCSO is busy, everyone who works for BCSO, I know you guys are busy, so I went ahead and helped you out,” Martinez says while driving his pickup truck, the bed of which is notably full of ALPR parts.

“We got a bunch of these bad boys,” he says in another video, showing off a truck bed stuffed to the brim with tower parts. “Let’s see how much I can get in one day. That’s gonna be the challenge for everyone out there.”

Playing the helpful citizen, Martinez drove his literal truckload of ALPR bits directly to the Sheriff’s department, where he was promptly taken into custody.

Here is the man himself

OK Florida Man - you're still awesome. Flock cameras must be pulled from Florida state roads within 30 days, DeSantis orders

Engineer retires at age 89 after 60 years on heritage railroads

TRN_Young_1_Helbok-rr.jpg

On Aug. 23, 2026, Don Young put in his last day as a steam locomotive engineer — 60 years after his first such day. On that Sunday, he ran four trips aboard the Delaware River Railroad Excursions’ Chinese-built 2-8-2 No. 142 between Phillipsburg and Riegelsville, N.J., a total of a little under 70 miles. When he climbed down from the cab after putting No. 142 away in the railroad’s shop at a few minutes before 7 p.m., an era in heritage railroading ended. At age 89, Don had decided not to renew his federal engineer’s license, which expired that day; he’ll have no more 5 a.m. alarms to wake to.

***

Born in Baltimore in 1937, Young grew up chasing Maryland & Pennsylvania steam trains on his bicycle. After graduating from high school and a stint in U.S. Navy submarine service, he earned a degree as a metallurgical engineer and hired on with Bethlehem Steel; he retired from a successor firm in 2012, at age 75. Over the course of his career, he worked at the Sparrows Point (Baltimore) mill and three in Pennsylvania – Bethlehem, Fairless, and Steelton; all have closed. In his retirement, Young has volunteered at the National Museum of Industrial History in Bethlehem, where you will still find him one day each week leading tours of the cold blast furnaces where he and his colleagues made high-quality alloy and tool steel.

For the past 40 years, Don has traveled the world, visiting 40-odd countries and seeing operating steam in all of them except Luxembourg and Iceland. In many of those places — including Poland, China, and Cuba — he rode in steam locomotives and ran them.

Not related, yet somehow related

AI is a Moron?

This is wild… AI just cooked up an entire trailer for *Titty Killer 6: Tits of Mars* and it’s somehow both hilarious and unsettlingly polished.

Blonde astronauts sprinting through red-lit corridors, getting yeeted onto the Martian surface, the whole “we keep sending sororities to space” bit… it’s peak absurd B-movie energy, but the lighting, camera moves, and editing look legit.

If this is what AI can already spit out, the movie industry is about to get completely flipped. Studios better start adapting fast because the barrier to making this level of nonsense just dropped to zero.

A Dutch knight?

Arise, Sir AVH: Alex Van Halen knighted in the Netherlands for his part in writing a “remarkable chapter in the history of rock music.”

doof-avh-knight.jpg

Alex Van Halen has been knighted – or at least given the equivalent honour – in the Netherlands.

The drummer spent the first nine years of his life in the country, before his family moved to California in 1962. But the Dutch government certainly hasn’t forgotten the Van Halen brothers’ roots.

The honour, the Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion (Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw), is one of the country’s highest civilian honours and is only given to those who have made “extraordinary contributions” to Dutch society and culture.

Some AVH for ya

Good evening, Horde! I've got an interview with another company tomorrow afternoon. And a line on a possible job in IN. Continued prayers greatly appreciated - may God make the way known:
Guide my feet, Lord, that I may walk the right path
Guide my hands, Lord, that I may do good work
Guide my tongue, Lord, that I may speak with wisdom
Guide my mind, Lord, that I may think with clarity
Guide my heart, Lord, that I may love unreservedly

And may the right job appear, and the wrong ones fall away.

34 I'm impressed with the career of the steam loco engineer. As a yute, I was invited to ride in the cab of locomotive by my great uncle who worked for the RR and they had some sort of special steam excursion. At the appointed time, my Grammi and I stood at the appointed crossing where Uncle Max would stop and pick me up. Uncle Max and his mighty machine huffed and puffed up and stopped. For whatever reason, he blew out one of the cylinders which engulfed Grammi and I. It scared me so badly that I peed myself and promptly ran into a cornfield to hide. Time and trains wait for no man so Uncle eventually had to leave without me.

Of all the regrets in life I might have, that one is the heaviest.

We took the boy to see Thomas the Tank Engine at the Railroad Museum in Green Bay when the boy was about four. Walking up to the facility, the full-sized Thomas rolled very slowly past, and blew the horn. The boy jumped so fast behind me and started shaking.

He recovered quickly, though, so credit to him. We went in to the event, and most of the clientele was under 3 feet tall, and every so serious about their heroes. It took him a good three weeks to get over how exciting it all was.

Also, we stayed at a hotel across the river from the museum, so when we crossed the bridge we told him it was the Island of Sodor....

90 I greatly dislike Ryan Reynolds for many reasons other than he can't act and is one dimensional.

The video tonight gave me two recoils.

What is that rolled up flannel snot rag on your throat? Is this a trend he's trying to set as a deflection from marrying an equally narcissistic weirdo? It looks very stupid, Ryan. I don't understand the point of this unless you are hiding a large zit or worse. Maybe a goiter?

Secondly, he's wearing eye concealer makeup like a ghey. I know this as it's reflecting light and also applied with a trowel. Real men don't or should not do this, Ryan.

You look lame, Ryan.

Aging is making your beady eyes somehow closer together, which is not attractive on anyone.

Go burn down another elementary school, that you thought was hilarious. I think you got way too many atomic wedgies in school and your emotional maturity stopped at that point.

Well, Ryan Reynolds is trying to push some retarded movie about a SR-71 pilot who gets shot down over Russia in the 80's and Kenneth Brannah rescues him cause he's an "Merica lovin' dude and not even in any alternative reality can the the scenario be close to plausible and it's pretty obvious he's high and disinterested giving the interview, so...

Here's a recreation of that hexagon pattern in the lab:
https://t.ly/5lw6w

First video I could find. It's caused by differential rotation of a fluid, and they set that with water in cylindrical tank set up where they can spin the inner and outer parts at different speeds.

These polygons naturally come out of that. With different values of the speeds and other variables, you can get anything from triangles, to squares, and on.

169 I had layered hair with sort of bangs, but still long in the '80's. I could still wear a French braid to work in the newborn nursery.

I wanted "The Rachel" from friends in the early '90's. Went to a new hairstylist and made the horrific mistake of asking for a shag, thinking, sort of, that's what she had.

I got a shag and my hair is thick. To a man and sons the first thing they said when they saw me later was: "Why did you do that?" It was traumatic. I wept later in our bedroom bad. The top layer was only about 2" long and it was very curly (as that is what my hair does if I don't correct it).

Women loved it. My men hated it and never, ever again. It remains an inch below my shoulders, blunt with blonde highlights. I may do this forever as it's easy. I don't care that I am olde.

College at the very end of the 70's into the 80's, and then off to the job market. I didn't have a lot of time to mess around in the 80's, really. Left home at 17 and never looked back. Lots of really fast life changes, and always the need to support myself. But there was nothing wrong with the 80's. No racism that I remember, no real sexism either, except the stupid kind that was easily overcome with a smart mouth and smarter behavior.

My hair didn't do big, but those shoulder pads on the suits... It was better when I moved back up here, so no more suits. Mini skirts, hard hats and steel toed construction boots! I was totally in my element! Lol.

Missed that one. She certainly does not have a ski jump nose. More of a beak with birds of prey eyeballs. Her pupils are super dilated and I wonder what she's on now to control her murdering arse.

I saw the video today of the ED doc's testimony. She did not fling herself out the window, but more of a less dramatic slide down the roof. I'll bet she was not counting on how severe her back injury would be with her superficial (MD's words) cuts to her throat and wrists.

I still think she did this because she hated her husband, as that's how many of these seem to go.

I do hope she does not wheel free. The jury should have been sequestered to prevent the filming by that Karen who fell into her son's grave (I did not read how).

Well, goodnight and have a pleasant tomorrow. Fly high but not down your roof.

I cannot in good conscience wish she were in hell, but she needs to pay for premeditated murder, which is exactly what she did. 233 Yay! Hash changed and my post didn't get nuked! Small victories.

I liked the 80s. Rust Belt kid. Entered 1980 a 11 year old, left 1989 as a 20 year old E-2 in the USAF. Western PA wasn't exactly the cutting edge of culture but it was ok. Listened to WDVE out of Pittsburgh, cruised around a lot with friends who had way cooler cars. My Mom's barely functioning 1981 K-Car was, uh, adventurous. With a good tail wind, it might get over 60mph, then the engine shut off. Ah Chrysler, bless your heart.
