We took the boy to see Thomas the Tank Engine at the Railroad Museum in Green Bay when the boy was about four. Walking up to the facility, the full-sized Thomas rolled very slowly past, and blew the horn. The boy jumped so fast behind me and started shaking.
He recovered quickly, though, so credit to him. We went in to the event, and most of the clientele was under 3 feet tall, and every so serious about their heroes. It took him a good three weeks to get over how exciting it all was.
Also, we stayed at a hotel across the river from the museum, so when we crossed the bridge we told him it was the Island of Sodor....

As much as I cut my teeth on 80s pop, by the end of the 80s I turned to metal. Helped, in large part, by Headbanger’s Ball and the pearl clutchers who assured all of us that metal was scary, and dangerous, with its lyrics about sex, drugs, violence, and SATAN WORSHIP.
Basically all society did back then was give every potential green light a teenage boy needs. “Hmmm. WHY is metal so scary and dangerous??! I better go find out…” : )

First video I could find. It's caused by differential rotation of a fluid, and they set that with water in cylindrical tank set up where they can spin the inner and outer parts at different speeds.
These polygons naturally come out of that. With different values of the speeds and other variables, you can get anything from triangles, to squares, and on.

I wanted "The Rachel" from friends in the early '90's. Went to a new hairstylist and made the horrific mistake of asking for a shag, thinking, sort of, that's what she had.
I got a shag and my hair is thick. To a man and sons the first thing they said when they saw me later was: "Why did you do that?" It was traumatic. I wept later in our bedroom bad. The top layer was only about 2" long and it was very curly (as that is what my hair does if I don't correct it).
Women loved it. My men hated it and never, ever again. It remains an inch below my shoulders, blunt with blonde highlights. I may do this forever as it's easy. I don't care that I am olde.

College at the very end of the 70's into the 80's, and then off to the job market. I didn't have a lot of time to mess around in the 80's, really. Left home at 17 and never looked back. Lots of really fast life changes, and always the need to support myself. But there was nothing wrong with the 80's. No racism that I remember, no real sexism either, except the stupid kind that was easily overcome with a smart mouth and smarter behavior.
My hair didn't do big, but those shoulder pads on the suits... It was better when I moved back up here, so no more suits. Mini skirts, hard hats and steel toed construction boots! I was totally in my element! Lol.

I saw the video today of the ED doc's testimony. She did not fling herself out the window, but more of a less dramatic slide down the roof. I'll bet she was not counting on how severe her back injury would be with her superficial (MD's words) cuts to her throat and wrists.
I still think she did this because she hated her husband, as that's how many of these seem to go.
I do hope she does not wheel free. The jury should have been sequestered to prevent the filming by that Karen who fell into her son's grave (I did not read how).

She lamely superficially cut her wrists and neck after murdering her 3 children, which did nothing as far as bleeding out; and decided to jump out a second floor window. Which I even know typically does not kill you unless you land on your head or neck on concrete. She somehow fx her thoracic vertebra and is paralyzed from the waist down.
I think she wanted to dive through the window but it was too small, looked like a bathroom window. This part she did not plan well nor research.

Thank you. So, the juror is not allowed to vote guilty with the caveat and if the lone juror has reasonable doubt he/she can only vote for acquittal. I think I understand that.
How does everyone know how the juror is voting?

I think the lone juror believes that there she is guilty, which includes the finding that there is no reasonable doubt that she was mentally competent to appreciate the wrongness of her acts at the time she committed them.
The subsequent suicide attempt, in my mind, is equivocal evidence (no evidence one way or another as to her mental state) as it can be taken as a sign of remorse as well as a sign of psychosis or some other severe mental state that could have existed when she planned and individually strangled each of those children.

I have told you that every person is to be presumed innocent until they are proved guilty, and that the burden of proof is on the prosecutor. If you evaluate all of the evidence and you still have reasonable doubt remaining, the defendant is entitled to the benefit of that doubt and must be acquitted.

For the field coils, I drill through the big flathead screws with a 5/16" drill bit in the drill press. Plop! Out comes the pole piece. Armatures are more tedious. The epoxied ones, I put in the firepit with firewood, and stoke up a good fire. Burns out the resin, leaving the wires loose as can be.
And I save bearings, bushings, and brushes, and maybe the good-looking starter drives, too.

If you cannot get them from the usual outlets, let me know the dimensions, and style of construction. I have a whole drawer full of salvaged motor brushes. Carbon, presumably? Starter brushes have a lot of copper in them to pass a high current; meant for momentary use only. Oversized rectangular-shaped carbon brushes can be very easily filed to fit.

Several pounds of copper in each starter. Steel and aluminum housings, too. It all adds up. Surprising how much there is in the commutator bars. I just drill through one or two bars with the drill press, and the cut bars come out, leaving enough room to wedge the others to an angle and free them from their spool.

Thats a good price. Surprisingly, I don't use a lot of that. I have 2 parts washers. 1 for the normal thing, and a clean one for a final rinse for all engine and trans parts for the harleys. I'll use brake cleaner on a lint free cloth to final clean gasket surfaces. I'll probably use 1 can all week, or spray it through oil passages, or spot cleaning something. Like you said, it is a convenience tool. Sometimes I get impatient and spray down a bunch of parts that came out of the parts washer just to dry them fast and piss away a whole can in one shot.

There is good evidence for several solar storms much bigger than Carrington. One is dated to about 774-775 AD, and that sucker was likely 10x Carrington.
Huge spike in C-14 levels and some other isotope(s). That 775 AD event was the probably the biggest one in the Holocene.
The biggest one ever was around 14 kya, 14.3 I think is the best dating, and that sucker was even bigger than thought from some recent data.
And that date should sound familiar... A little before the dreaded Younger Dryas. And actually right around the Older Dryas.

They've got grid mitigation techniques now which they routinely use during the geomagnetic storms. Basically, when Erf's magnetic field gets to doing it's dance, large DC (on time scales relative to grid frequency) voltages are induced in long E-W wires strung along. Transformer cores don't like it, so they disconnect the grounded neutrals and put some "high pass" filters in that block the DC.
Of course, if that voltage gets too high....

Huge spike in C-14 levels and some other isotope(s). That 775 AD event was the probably the biggest one in the Holocene.
The biggest one ever was around 14 kya, 14.3 I think is the best dating, and that sucker was even bigger than thought from some recent data.
And that date should sound familiar... A little before the dreaded Younger Dryas. And actually right around the Older Dryas.

See the "Anglo-Saxon chronicle" -- some monks recorded a giant red cross in the sky. There are other ancient accounts. When those accounts line up with tree-ring data showing carbon-14 spikes, and some other proxies, they consider that a confirmation.

There is a crazy theory, which actually makes sense. You know those crazy "stick figures" in some of those petroglyphs? Well, they have a remarkable similarity to some of the plasma discharge patterns (see "Z-pinch").
Almost a dead-on match in some cases. If there were some YUGE solar particle event and geomagnetic storm of the orders of magnitude range bigger than Carrington, the sky would be lit up with displays like that.
So, they think our ancient ancestors recorded those awesome and terrifying patterns in the sky.

Well, we'd get a dose of radiation, likely with no discernible effect. Some power lines and copper comms lines might get burned out by the powerful magnetic surges; all depending on the orientation of the line in question relative to the vector of the field. Small items, like laptops, cellphones, and appliances likely would be unaffected, since they are too small for the field gradient to develop much voltage across them. But stuff plugged into the wall could get zapped if a voltage surge gets passed along the grid. I had stuff zapped here when a power line got hit by lightning. But we will get a warning. Heed it, unplug until the surge has passed.

Good for checking for intake leaks too. You know what I miss though? The company that would change the parts washer fluid every month dropped off this thing for a free trial. It was maybe a 10-15 gallon steel drum with an agitator on top. The fluid was somewhere between that old school carb dunking shit and paint stripper. The agitator had a basket, and I would stick a harley head in it, hook up an air hose and it would just slowly agitate the head. In a hour it would come out like a new casting. No carbon, no paint, nothing. It was worth it when I was rebuilding heads a lot. We only send out cylinders to the machine shop, but I did all the valve and head rebuilding, so it made life easy. It was a pain in the ass to glass bead the carbon out of them, so this was living large. It was $100 a month years ago for that. They don't deal with it anymore.

Yep the biggest danger with the changing magnetic field is long E-W transmission line. Neutral to ground "high pass" filters handle a lot of that now. But if it were big enough, they'd just arc over and burn out. In that case, well, they'd have to take the grid down for the duration, and just ground out the transmission lines.

I wonder what would happen if you just disconnect the line from whatever termination it had at each end, and let it float? It might get standing waves on it, but would any current flow? I guess they could now run computer simulations to predict what might happen.
Another possible concern would be pipelines, I guess.

An ongoing astrophysical question is if the Sun can produce "superflares". Now, by superflare, I don't just mean a couple three orders of magnitude bigger than Carrington, such as that 14 kya event, I mean a flare that would make that 14 kya event look like a fart in a hurricane. If one of those hit earth, it would be a sterilizing event. Basically protons on the deck here at ground level.
There've been a few sun-like stars observed that do these from time to time. A few, but not many. And those few that do are very different from the Sun in some cases -- very fast spinners and some other things.
So the question is can we rule out that Sol could pull one of those. We can't, although they think it's highly unlikely.

You are a handy and resourceful person. Prowl yard sales and auctions, and flea markets. Buy one or two little generators, and make them work. You don't need a big expensive whole-house generator. A 3500 watt job will run your fridge and freezer, a couple of lights, and the furnace fan. Maybe run the fridge and freezer alternately. I have an ancient Coleman 3500 watt generator, and it has done yeoman service in several power outages due to storms. Run the fridge, the circulating pump and thermo valves for the hot water heating system, some lights, and the computer. Microwave when I need it, too.

I said sterilizing, but a superflare wouldn't really be. It would be sterilizing to *us*, basically, and a lot of surface life, but it would recover eventually. It would be total reset and what would emerge would be something very different, but life would survive.
The late Ordovician mass extinction event about 450 million years ago is a good candidate for a gamma ray burst, turns out. That's another big radiation event type of thing.
