Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - September 1, 2026![]() Howdy Hordelings! The Tuesday ONT has arrived. So have you. Nice when a plan comes together! Open thread, as always. What's on YOUR mind tonight? Hey, I know this guy!
The aptly named Digital Camouflage may look like a hideous Hawaiian shirt, but its seemingly abstract pattern was created with a very specific purpose in mind – to prevent AI-powered CCTV cameras from recognizing the wearer as a person. “AI systems are made of multiple layers and never learned what a human is – they learned what humans statistically look like in millions of training images,” Simon Weckert, the shirt’s creator, explained. “In the early layers it’s edges, contrasts and texture gradients; deeper in the network it’s part-like patterns: the head-and-shoulders silhouette, the proportions of limbs against a torso, the continuity of a body’s outline against the background. A ‘person’, for the machine, is a bundle of visual statistics – and that is exactly its weakness.” The Digital Camouflage shirt was carefully designed to confuse AI systems, making it very hard for them to recognize the wearer as a human being. Ironically, the pattern was created using AI, through a process known as an “adversarial loop”.Check out the whole thing. Photo at the link. ----- Science news. Actually - spinning earth news. OK, not really news - something happened 2 years ago. Oh well - read about it anyway! On 5 July 2024, Earth completed a rotation 1.66 milliseconds short of 86,400 seconds, the shortest day measured in the atomic-clock era, breaking the previous record set in June 2022 Here are two facts that seem to argue with each other. Over the long haul, Earth is slowing down. The pull of the Moon’s tides has been stretching our days out for hundreds of millions of years, adding about 2.3 milliseconds per century to the length of a day. And yet for the past several years the planet has been doing the opposite, spinning slightly faster, setting one shortest-day record after another. The current mark is 1.66 milliseconds short of a full 24 hours, clocked on 5 July 2024. Both things are true at once. The slow tidal drag is still there in the background. Riding on top of it are shorter, faster wobbles, and lately those wobbles have been pushing in the speed-up direction. That’s the puzzle, and it’s stranger and matters more than a few thousandths of a second sounds. But wait - there's more. Something is slowing the earth down. Can you guess what the wrinkle is? While the core has been speeding the planet up, climate change has been working the other way. As polar ice melts in Greenland and Antarctica, water moves from the poles toward the equator, and that shift in mass slows the rotation. But of course - that dang climate change again. Just meltin' ice and makin' the earth slosh around slowly. The oddest part is that melting ice bought the world time. Agnew’s modeling suggested the reckoning would have arrived around 2026, but the ice-melt braking pushed it back. Without the effect of melting ice, Earth would need that negative leap second in 2026 instead of 2029, Agnew calculated. A problem created deep in the Earth is being partly held off by climate change at the surface.Oh, the modeling was wrong? First time that's ever happened, right?!? These idiots will never stop. Barry Gibb was born on the date in 1946 Jimmy Buffett died on this date in 2023 at age 76 Tonight's ONT brought to you by unfair tests

Yes. Taught this way back before the rise of the machines. The reason for a "boonie hat" in evasion (escaping an enemy when you're down behind enemy lines) is that it makes the head no longer look exactly like a head. Yes, just putting a floppy big brim on your head ever so slightly confuses the human recognition - in the dark, in camouflage, etc. - of "Hey, that's a person." It's also a reason for the "mitznefet" the Israeli military issues. It's like a giant sleep cap (the sort certain types of women wear to WalMart) worn over the helmet. Because a helmet just screams "head here!" The mitznefet breaks it up into more of a blob and less of a head shape. (Some use the keffiyeh or shemagh to achieve the same effect.) I picked up a new recliner at the furniture store today. It came in a big box, some assembly will be required. The kid at the store had no trouble rolling the box downhill from the loading dock into the bed of my pickup with a furniture dolly.
Skipping over minor misadventures with a plastic tarp and scattered rain showers, I got it home. The box only weighs 120 lbs, so wrestling it out of the truck in a controlled fall was no problem. What is a problem is that the box will not fit through any door in the house. I will have to open the box, bring the assorted pieces inside, then assemble them in place. It's now dark, my back hurts, and it looks like rain. The box is now sitting on my covered patio, wrapped in a tarp, with dunnage under it. It was glaring at me through the glass patio door, so I had to shut the drapes. >> I thought the Moon was affecting the Earth's rotational speed.
It is. Tidal torque. The earth's orbital angular momentum is being transferred to the Moon, throwing it in a higher orbit. Based on the lunar recession rate from lunar laser ranging, the tidal slowing should be 2.3 - 2.4 ms/century. But, over the past few hundred years, that average rate is about 1.7 - 1.8 ms/cy. Most of that difference is isostatic rebound after the last glacial maximum. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at September 01, 2026 11:06 PM (w6EFb) 187

33 For men at least there is no being "a little bit gay"
You either aren't or go, uh, full hog. Posted by: 18-1 at September 01, 2026 10:08 PM (sKqQm) There is a standard theory of No Bisexuals that goes like this: everyone likes a pretty girl. So, there are plenty of LUGs (lesbian until graduation) and closeted fathers out there. But guys are grody, and it takes the specific, biologically driven libido of a homosexual man or a heterosexual woman to want to be with a dude, so that's what all 'bisexuals' are. The debate rages within the Alphabet Mafia itself, so I don't expect to resolve it here. I'm not even taking a position, just presenting the (plausible) argument. Here's a timeanddate page on the earth rotational data: https://t.ly/xEpED Scroll down and they've got a graph going back to the early 1800s. You'll see the last little speed up was nothing much compared to the speed up around the 1870s. It was spinning about 3 ms faster then, but by 1900-1910 had slowed down about 4 ms slower. The 2020 speed up was the first time the excess LOD has gone negative since the atomic clock era. I think I saw a movie with Mark Ruffalo but I can't remember. I could pick him out of a line up as I do unfortunately know what he looks like. He's the one who looks bloated and goofy; like he was left too long underwater and started to macerate. Probably fails at dating or did. I know I would not go out with him even if he said he was famous and rich.
My husband, who does not limp and is a former long distance runner for 4 decades now has a torn tendon in his hip. Because getting older is not for the faint of heart, even for athletes. It hardly hurts but he had a MRI and wow we were not expecting this. I guess ortho surgery may be in his future and have already chosen the doc to call tomorrow. We have lots of stairs. I have even planned where to put a bed in the family room as I don't mess around and go to the worst possible scenario for everything. He's only had minor surgery before on a thumb he cut a tendon. We will find out soonish about something we did not see on the horizon. Hopefully with a scope if needed. It's a complete tear so I doubt he will escape surgery. *It's always something. Here a wiki graph from the IERS data since 1962, when the atomic clock measuring started. This is much more precise than the 19th century data, which is based on ephemeris time, tied to the accuracy of astronomical observations (which have to be damned precise for this purpose): https://t.ly/qJZyl Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at September 01, 2026 11:22 PM (w6EFb) 215

Yep, there is usable data back to the early 1600s. Not as precise as the 19th century, but still somewhat usable, although you have to be aware of the large error bars. I'm too lazy to dig that up, IERS used to have it own their web site buried somewhere. But anyway, it shows a curious rotational speed up right before the Maunder Minimum, and the Little Ice Age kicked it. Very interesting correlations. But again, the error bars are large there. >> Packing ice at the poles and draining water from the equator could do a little ice skater’s pirouette on the Earth.
That is very fascinating, and it turns out it works just the opposite of how you would naively think it should. You would think moving water mass from the equator to ice at the poles would lower the moment of inertia and speed the earth up, and when the ice sheets melt, it should slow the earth down. And it does behave that way over the short term. But over the long term, you have isostatic adjustment, and the result in an icehouse earth with large ice sheets becomes more oblate than a "hothouse" earth with no ice sheets. So ice age earth is a slower earth. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at September 01, 2026 11:38 PM (w6EFb) 252

>> Hasn't the Earth suffered two massive impacts? One of which birthed the Moon?
With the Moon birthing impact, the Giant Impact Hypothesis, a Mars sized body hit what you call "proto-earth". So, the current earth-moon system was the product of that. Proto-earth was about 90% the mass of earth now. There have been about 200 "big impacts" confirmed, with crater structures found. Of these the three Big Ones, are one in South Africa, crater about 150 miles wide, maybe 180, dating to 2 billion years ago. Then one in Canada about 150 miles dated to 1.8 billion, and then the Dino killer, 66 million years ago, about 110 miles wide.
