Open Thread: "Thief Busters" Hurt More Would-Be Thieves

I said last time that I'm not sure this is real, because the stupid legal system we live under would probably punish these guys as serious criminals for rigging a bike to electrify a thief. No punishment for the thief, but the guy putting out a bait bike: Maximum penalties.

Still, this all looks very real.

Setting up a Bait Truck to lure thieves into, before taking them on a rough ride:

Could this be real? I don't know. My heart says yes, but my brain says it's just a well-done fake.

There is a whole genre of video of thieves getting comeuppance. Brazil biker punks, Russian car jackers, various armed robberies of stores, etc.

There are websites that specialize in this stuff. I don't recall where, but I have seen them and they really are glorious.

The thief typically grabs the backpack and then runs off. Only get the bag jerked right out of their hands. Most of the time they've a death grip on it, so they end up biting the sidewalk. Some will grab it again and take off... only to bite it again.

Didn't 'Cops' suffer the same criticism? It was just one black perp after another. I think the show went on hiatus during Covid but now it's back but with most non-black perps.

I recall asking a friend at work if he watched 'Cops' and his response was 'OMG! Those people are barbarians...killing each other over a pair of sneakers....'

I worked in a place culturally closer to Star Trek than say...Roseann...

Beelink is mounted on the back of a Gateway monitor, a $1.98, 12v cooling fan encased in Styrofoam is strung on an insulated wire from one of the mounting screws. Its cuddled up to the Beelink and the residual air is then ducked via envelope downward to the two mounted external HDs. It's all cool.

You could get away with the tied down backpacks, bikes, skateboards, etc. That's simply securing your property.

Glitter bombs require absolute intent, so you could (probably) get away with it.

Electrification is a no-no without clear warnings such as you would find on a fence.

The box truck is absolutely staged. Closing the door could be construed as detainment (although get ready for a legal bill). The second you drive away, that is false imprisonment, kidnapping and reckless endangerment.

Every time I saw Cops it showed them doing the right thing - interacting with people like convenience store cashiers, winning hearts and minds that way. Checking in on people.

Then dealing with, frankly, white trash. More often than not in trailer parks.

I never saw every Cops episode but that seemed to be a theme for the ones I saw.

The original On Patrol on A&E used to follow the Sheriff’s department in the county I live in on a few nights a month. They might still do it, haven’t seen it in years.

With what money? If the ships are not viable and must be scrapped, how do you intend to bring them here? How do you deal with those who bought that crude? What do you do with the proceeds - put them in escrow for Iran when they get their shit together, or do you support demontage?

You think so? There's a bit more variety in reactions, but often white girls end up crying and begging (for mercy or their mom), although a substantial number are just combative and argumentative. Black women seem to almost always be violent and argumentative, rarely cry, and are always pregnant/can't breathe/etc

Amateurs talk tactics. Professionals talk logistics. It’s fine to capture these ships. Then what? That’s not bureaucratic BS, that’s real consequences you must deal with realistically. It could well be that those ships were attacked, set on fire and sunk because it was the easiest thing to do from a logistical standpoint.
