Muskily-Heterosexual James Talarico in 2020: Capitalism Is "Oppressive," Texas Must Stop Producing Oil

KFile:

In 2020 forum, James Talarico said Texas oil was 'not gonna last,' called capitalism 'oppressive'

Six years before becoming Texas Democrats' US Senate nominee, James Talarico described capitalism as an "oppressive system" during a Sierra Club event, grouping it with White supremacy and climate change and saying ending the ways all three worked together was necessary to begin the process of "dismantling them."

During the Sierra Club event from September 2020, Talarico participated in a virtual climate candidate forum in which he also compared Texas' leadership in the oil and gas industry to "being the leader in cassette tapes in the 1980s," declaring "that industry is not gonna last."

The previously unreported comments come at a time when Talarico is trying to broaden his appeal as he's faced attacks from Republicans trying to paint him as too progressive for Texas. Talarico has raised significantly more money than his GOP opponent Ken Paxton, but remains locked in a tight race against the scandal-plagued Texas attorney general.

Talarico's remarks offer a window into the more explicitly progressive language he used before launching a statewide campaign built around affordability, faith and taking on wealthy interests.

It's not just "language," Andrew Kaczinsky. That's the Democrat Socialists' spin, that their past comments are about "cringey" language only. Their spin is that this is a language problem, not a policies or ideology or beliefs problem, and you concede this spin to them by repeating the spin uncritically.

He said he wants to "dismantle capitalism." This isn't just language -- this is a program. If he's claiming that the only problem here was language, the obvious follow-up question is "What language would you prefer to use instead of 'dismantle capitalism,' then?"

Woke 1 was cringey, man.

When asked what lawmakers could do to address the disproportionate effects of climate change on communities of color, Talarico thanked the moderator for the question and the young activists at the club for the way they had framed the issue.

"I am so thankful that you asked this question and also thankful that young activists have really drawn the link between climate change and White supremacy and capitalism in our country," Talarico said. "And I think only ending the ways that all three of those oppressive systems work together are we gonna be able to begin the process of dismantling them."

Later, when asked how he explains climate policy to voters in a district President Donald Trump carried in 2016, Talarico said he focused on values, jobs and whether Texas would lead the industries of the future -- a future he suggested would not include oil and gas.

"We all know that Texas has been a leader in oil and gas, but in many ways that's like being the leader in cassette tapes in the 1980s," Talarico later said responding to another question. "That industry is not gonna last. And if we wanna ensure we have an economy that's gonna work for our children and our children's children, we gotta be ahead of the curve and Texas has to lead instead of follow on this issue."

On his current campaign website, Talarico says Texas is "the energy leader of the world -- and as senator, I will work tirelessly to ensure our state not only maintains, but extends that innovative leadership for generations to come so that Texans always have access to reliable, affordable energy."

JT Ennis, a spokesperson for the campaign, told CNN that Talarico has already acknowledged some of his past comments "missed the mark" and attacked Paxton, Talarico's opponent.

"James is a proud capitalist and agrees with the majority of Texans that racism, natural disasters, and a billionaire-controlled economy are all problems we need to address," said Ennis in a statement. "James supports the oil and gas industry and believes in an all of the above energy strategy that protects Texas oil and gas jobs."

...

Previously, in 2021, Talarico suggested during a legislative session that modern science asserts there are six biological sexes -- which spurred the nickname "Six-Gender Jimmy" from Paxton and his supporters.

Talarico has since addressed some of his past comments, calling them "cringey." He said that he knows there are two sexes, men and women, and "a very small percentage of people who have these chromosomal abnormalities" who deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

After the state's massive power grid failure in 2021 killed hundreds of Texans, Talarico introduced a bill in the state house to combat climate change by requiring the state to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90 percent below 1990 levels by 2050 and at least 50 percent below 1990 levels by 2030. The bill died in committee.

...

Texas oil and gas production has increased since Talarico's 2020 remarks and meets or exceeds pre-pandemic levels.

Like Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed and Francesca Hong and AOC, his response is just to distance himself from his old phrasing while keeping all of the policies that "phrasing" accurately described.

Andrew Kaczynski
@KFILE

Talarico campaign tells CNN his "cringey," past comments "missed the mark," and he's a capitalist who supports oil and gas.

The fact that Texas had (massively subsidized) windmills accounting for about 18% of electricity generation was the proximate cause of the blackout. Every single windmill and solar array went to zero within an hour of the ice storm. If the lignite and older gas plants had not been deactivated, there would not have been the disaster.

28 Ursula von der Leyen has put a figure on Europe’s financial problem: €10 trillion.

Last week, speaking to French business leaders gathered by Medef (Mouvement des entreprises de France—France’s leading employers’ organisation) in Paris, the Commission president lamented that such a large share of European household savings remains in bank deposits. “Unfortunately, these savings are lazy,” she said, before arguing that Europe needs to put that money “at the service of its companies.”

For now, there is no plan to confiscate deposits or withdraw money from individual bank accounts. Brussels’ proposal is different and, precisely for that reason, more politically significant: to use tax incentives, new financial products, regulatory changes, and more integrated supervision to push a greater share of private savings towards European capital markets.

... it sounds like early 1929, when everybody just had to invest

Not really true. First, there were multiple outages for maintenance scheduled at the same time. The ice storm was a complete unpredicted weather anomaly that struck at the perfect time. The plants that were still online were NG, which FROZE because of the severe temps. The wind and solar failed, sure, but they weren't supposed to run the whole f*cking system. Mistakes were made all over the place. That will never happen again.

Now, that being said, to your point, should the lignite coal fired plants shut down by Rick Perry and the Owebama administration have been online and not scheduled for maintenance, Texans would've none been the wiser.

69 56 The Dems have got quite a few candidates thus year that are verging on “I am not a Witch” kind of cringe.

Which kinda worries because those early kinda kooky Tea Party types either turned out to be charlatans or idiots, but all of that eventually gave us God Emperor Trump.

Give the Dems enough time and they’ll find another Messiah.

The Tea Party and the rise of the DSA are materially different.

Tea Party was a populist uprising without a center or real focus, but it had a generalized discontent with DC that mostly manifested in "you're spending too much money". It was also heavily working class.

DSA is materially different. Over-educated, downwardly mobile elites who are trying to push Maoism. It's decidedly not populist at all, even if they are trying to make their messaging populist in effect. They keep underperforming in actual elections (Mamdani's vaulted win was actually surprisingly close in deep blue NYC).

Concur. I have such an ad in mind. I've titled it "The Face of Communism"

A still image of Talirco is on the screen, and while it's there, the narrator just reads Talarico's Commie points.

Nearing the end, the narrator states that this message is approved by the memories of Communism. A face roll of Stalin, Mao, Karl Marx and Ho Chi Minh appears. There's a large population of ethnic South Vietnamese in Texas that hate Communism and Ho with a vengeance.

Abiotic oil is an interesting theory, but besides handwaving chemistry, there is not a lot of proof. While it's true that blacks are a loyal Democrat voting bloc and won't stop anytime soon, there are clear patterns where when there is a clear racial preference in the Democrat primary and blacks don't get their choice, they tend to see decreased turnout in the general.

So, Talarico will win 85% of the black vote.

But the turnout will be 11% instead of 13%.

All while the white working class vote keeps voting Republican by 30-40 points or so.

And, if you want some real fun, dig into the crosstabs of the TX senate polling. They have Paxton winning them by like 5.

The polling problems in the WI governor's race (Hong by 30? anyone?) are obviously appearing in other polling as well.

The problem is that neither solar nor wind are suitable at all for maintenance backup. Once you bring that gas plant down for maintenance, you need the backup to not fail, because it’s no longer the backup.

The result here in Texas is that maintenance is being degraded, badly, by (a) not doing it when needed because he backup capacity is no longer reliable, and (b) cutting the downtime window so small that it can’t be done right.

Actually, the extremely low temps caused the natural gas to freeze in the pipes, blocking......the pipes. Natural gas wasn't able to flow.

Was NOT a pump issue.

The ONLY plants that would've got through that cold snap was coal fired plants. And any existing were down for maintenance and most could not be fired back up, which also takes time to do.

Leftist politicians verr extreme-left to appeal to their communist primary voters, then blatantly lie during the general election and pretend they never said any of those things, to appeal to mainstream voters.

This is true 100% of the time, and has been true in every election for the last 100 years.

The media's role has traditionally been to aid the lying leftist politician by not reporting on his previous statements. Every leftist-Democrat politician since the 1960s has depended on this assist from the media to get elected. prior to internet, the coordinated deception worked very well.

Hoepfulyl, the era of the internet and social media will change all that. The truth can no longer be suppressed.

Partially correct / partially incorrect. The nat gas itself did not freeze. Over time, water vapor and sludge accumulates inside the pipelines, hence the "pigging" operations to keep them cleaned out. Like colonoscopy preps.

The water vapor and sludge froze up constriction points, blocking the natural gas from flowing.

180 Talarico's two-faced messaging reminds me of how Yasser Arafat operated in the '70s-'90s. He'd go to some "peace conference, " agree to not murder Jews in exchange to some huge concession from the west, smile and shake hands with them for the photo op and say in English, "I want peace" -- and then zoom in his motorcade back to Ramallah, and give a fiery speech to the Palestinians, and say in Arabic, "HA ha! Fooled those stupid infidels! They're giving us billions of dollars and ceding territory, and all I had to do is pretend to decrease the terrorism a bit! Ha ha ha ha ha ha! Go forth, my minions, and slaughter the yehudim!!" But this part wasmever reported in the western press (at least until some enterprising independent journalists translated tapes of his speeches in the '90s.)

This is exactly how the left operates as well (not surprisingly, since Arafat was trained by American Marxists). Lie to the cameras, and then gloat to their base when they think no one is listening.

The DemSocs are just the result of the Dem's using the crazies more and more for support - and fraud also coming home to roost. They get on the ballot because their safe areas are full of nuts, and the fading 'old school' doesn't have up and coming heirs gaining power internally to carry on the scam. Recently it seems the Dems are thinking of purging DemSoc out of the party, but that will likely lead to them failing, or losing ground to the GOP in the short term.

Posted by: runner at September 01, 2026 03:42 PM (g47mK)

=======

Yes.

Because summer polling is notoriously inaccurate. Polling in summer in contentious senate races overestimates Democrat performance in the actual election by 7 points on average.

https://x.com/PatrickRuffini/status/
2085763509682323680

There are an assortment of reasons for this from real problems in polling (response bias, Democrats just like talking to pollsters more outside of election season) to other types of real problems (no pollster is graded on their summer polling, only their final polls, so there is literally no incentive for any polling firm to try and be accurate outside their final polls).

So, if you want to compare summer polling this year to previous years, you compare it to previous summer polling instead of previous final polling. Summer polling this year compared to final polling from last cycle is an apple to oranges comparison.

I'll just file this away in my "What I Learned at AoS Today" folder.

340 Got to admit I got a good laugh at Cornyn saying he thinks Paxton is a "lazy candidate". Cornyn got the snot pounded out of him by Paxton.

He's a "capitalist who supports oil and gas," huh? This demonic plastic mannequin can't even lie convincingly. "I'm an abusive kulak who lords over the other peasants, that's right, vote for me."

342 Nicholson's Joker was just a cartoon in a cartoon movie.
Posted by: Howdy at September 01, 2026 03:45 PM (ZEFzw)

It was perfect for the time (1989) and the film.
I enjoyed those Tim Burton Batman films.

Danny DeVito was entertaining as the Penguin and Halle Berry was a well-built Catwoman.

The Batman flicks went downhill after that but the Dark Knight trilogy were much better films overall.

343 Here's something of interest:

LV and RV voter screening is likely broken.

B/c they're basically getting the same response in polls.

Be careful, there. If you talk about past performance and prediction it becomes math as soon as someone mentions Kalman Filtering.

And I was told there would be no math.

Probably not, but all these political worms will craw in submission to the God-Emperor eventually.

No one made that statement. Trump wanted her to step in and she did. He wanted her for the general, and she was in. He wants to keep her in. So your grievance should be with Trump who picked her.

353 A cheery thought from DU:

"The Supreme Court has totally demoralized the American people.

Those "people" that thought they were the owners of the White House and the Capitol. They thought it was the "People's House"? But the Supreme Court has disabused them of that silly idea. It may be call the "people's house" but the people have no "standing".

They may as well have filed a quit claim deed and given the property to Donald Trump. He acts as if it all belongs to him anyway. It is disheartening, to say the least.

He is like a squatter that has moved in and refuses to leave. In the meantime, he destroys the property whenever he gets a whim.

And the people that are supposed to own the place, can do nothing about it. Thank you, Supreme Court!

You pieces of crap!"

The problem with traitors is that once exposed, they can be eliminated. If Trump wins a larger majority, Thune is either replaced, or becomes a non problem going forward and the GOPe wing gets that much weaker.

363 Re: running out of oil..did you know who originally supported and pushed the theory that oil is a "fossil fuel" that originated in the distant days of the dinosaurs? John Rockefeller when he was building his pile with Standard Oil when oil was just becoming important. Gee, he wouldn't want to make it look like a finite resource, would he? I do believe the Soviets were right on one thing..it is generated continuously at the Earth's core..A field can be drained faster than it refills, sure, and if use goes up exponentially at some point humanity could get ahead of the natural generation but I have spent the last 50 years hearing about how oil was going to run dry in the next 20 years and then how more and more has been found.

Still finding new fields - heard about one in central Australia. Its location on a super old craton may hint at a non biological origin but in any case, bio origin or not we keep finding new sites to this day. And of course lots of our own sources are still there not empty and could be turned into production.
