Nah. It's one more facet of CONTROL by our federal government.
I'm guessing the devices are tailored to be exactly 1 cm smaller in every dimension than the most common carry on luggage.
Next year they will make them yet smaller.
This continual shrinkage will persist until even purses and wallets will no longer be allowed as carry-on items.

Good news JohnF... I was going to head to WI today to have someone check out selling Dad's stuff, but Jules got sick so I stayed home. During his last hospitalization I went up to help out and came home to a sick wife who had to go to the ER. She almost died from septic shock due to a perforated ulcer.
Not going thru that again so I stayed home. She's still sick today, flu-like symptoms, so glad I stayed. You have to prioritize things.

Tonight is the final night of our RV odyssey. We left our California home Aug 3.Tomorrow we expect to return in the early evening. We made it as far east as the Mississippi, stopping in Hannibal, Mo and Lake Village, Arkansas. We went to three Buc-ee's. Had great steaks at Prime 9 in Dodge City, Ks and Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo. We suffered torrential downpours a number of times*, with accompanying howling wind and lightning and thunder, including one storm at Lake Chicot SP which knocked out power for 5 hours overnight and dropped a tree branch h on the camper. On the plus side, it's a beautiful park and we practically had it all to ourselves.
• For context, I can count on one hand the number of times we've had howling wind, lightning and rain in the 45+ years I've lived in So. Cal.

This film was a very early entry in the CGI realm, and you can tell because the folks doing the effects really went all in to make them terrific. As opposed to CGI in later films where it was some guy took a course. These weren't settlers, they were pioneers and the effects look awesome 30 years later.
Also, this was the film that told me "You must be someone who creates computer animation." So there's that. Somewhere I've got 3D Martians that I built myself.

The job search continues - the 'interview' today was a screening call, and while the job posting said "A and/or B, C and/or D", I had A and C, and they secretly wanted B and D, they had plenty of people for A and C.
Oh well.
No word back yet from last Friday's interview - which seems like a good fit, from my angle - and no word on the other interview I'm pre-expecting this week. But it's 'only' Monday, I suppose.
If I have a job by then, I may try to attend the TxMoMe, it's closer than I thought.

Yes. And,
The Fed will eventually take over greater parts of the West Coast.
It will segregate all Federal properties from the indigenous peoples and their rules. Military presence will increase to insure safety and security of fed properties, which will increase by community petition and acquisition for more bases and import infrastructure. Parks and joined communities will be safe for tourists and communities within the new federal jurisdiction.

At the stellar and solar system scale, a galactic collision is nothing. Think of two swarms of bees merging together. From a distance, you see two blobs hitting each other.
At the scale of the individual bees, nothing much happens. In the aftermath, some stars get ejected from the galaxy, the big central black holes merge and all that, but for any individual star, nothing much happens.
The view of Andromeda looming large in the sky a few billion years from now will be spectacular.
Of course, life on earth will be gone by then anyway.

That's a bit problematic for a few of us, anyway.
DH will only fly first class. He doesn't fit in coach and when we get to wherever, it's usually long after the first three hour flight to Seattle, and then he can't move, at all. So, we don't fly much anymore, but may entertain the MoMe every other year or so.

Yes, it was. There were seats that were actually bigger than the average ass. There were arm rests that allowed your arms to rest. And they served food and drinks, instead of charging you a fortune.
And you could check how ever many bags you had, and still carry one on.
Now, it's worse than Greyhound in the air. At least the seats on a Greyhound are reasonably comfortable, even if the clown sitting next to you is not.

In the slightly-less-near future, no checked luggage will be allowed, either, so they can stack sedated passengers in the cargo area like cordwood. You'll fedex your luggage to your destination beforehand.
Coach will be the same. The difference between business class and first class is that first class will still have seats, at somewhat less than the current "coach" size. Business class will be standing-room-only.

I fear for the bill for last week's adventures in health care. Ambulance, ER, five staples to the cranium, and heaven knows who all is going to bill us.
I'm always amazed at the bills from ER, Ambulance, Doctor, Nursing Care, Cat Scan Reader, etc.
They are supposed to give you an estimate of costs, but they somehow never manage to do so.

Did lots of domestic and int'l flying after that golden era faded, but there was a 2nd golden-ish era just before 9/11, before airlines right-sized (so still lots of excess capacity). The excess capacity met the internet era in the 90s, and again if you knew what you were doing, amazing prices. I once flew RT DC-SD for around $130.
There was a period where you could use the new ticket sites like Orbitz to pretty much determine the minimum fares offered on a given itinerary. Then you could go to Priceline and bid just perfectly to get the lowest fare possible.

Also, in the days before artificial lights, games during the work day in the big cities were very well attended. According to an uncle that played MLB for the Yankees and others during the 30s and 40s this was due to the fact that the office workers of the day were so inefficient while at work that it didn't hurt the productivity of the firm too much if they weren't there.
I dunno about that but it's interesting to contemplate.

Not just accurate but actually pretty meaningful. Flew for the first time in ages a few weeks ago, and there were two people in the boarding area I feared we'd be next to. Sad. Fortunately didn't happen.
Once on a work trip thru Yurrup our group got the 6 middle seats of a .... DC-10? It was late 90s. We were stuck on the ground for 3 hours by t-storms at Newark. Person on the end had an enormous obese person next to them. Quite a treat for 8 hours.

Once, and only once, was I able to get an injured de Monet spawn to the primary care doc's office before they closed, avoiding the exorbitant ER price list.
Youngest daughter apparently broke a ring finger in PE -volleyball. Primary doc/nurse x-rayed it, confirmed, taped it up and wrote an Rx for painkiller. Went back in 2 or 3 days for a proper splinting. All for the cost of a normal office visit co-pay.

So now you have comically delayed boarding/deboarding times, along with injuries and disputes. Took 20/twenty minutes to get off a plane in Denver on the way to Miami 2 years ago. This coming weekend, you'll see firefighters collecting money for MDA during their fill the boot campaign. I would encourage everyone not to give their money to this effort. While the money does go to research, some of this money is given back to the IAFF, the firefighter's union. Since 2007, the IAFF has received over $15 million from MDA. It's a kickback scheme for the union. One year I looked at, the IAFF was the second largest recipient of MDA money, only behind John's Hopkins. Don't fall for the "this money only goes to helping kids with MD."

It's a little satellite galaxy of ours, and is/was in a tight polar orbit.

That Sagittarius Dwarf wasn't discovered until the '90s -- It's close on the other side of the Galaxy.
The first pass it made through our disc was around 6 billion years ago. And that likely triggered a burst of star formation, of which our Sun and solar system were likely part of.
So that thing is sort of our daddy or something. It also caused a ripple or wave structure in the disc. If you looked at the Milky Way edge on, you'd see a little wave structure, not just a flat edge.

Next morning - Lvov? - a hilarious Hogan's Heroes scene developed. Our group leader had to deal with the furious dezhurnaya who ran our car (this system also explained why the cars we used were clean). She wasn't letting us out of the station til the things were returned. So the culprits including mois silently passed the things - behind our backs to those standing next to us, til they were gathered by the group leader. He was not happy with us (this was a US professor).
Didn't know I could easily pick up Stalin knick-knacks in Georgia decades later. Still would have been a score.

Back before I knew any better, and the company wasn't hiring dress-up drama drag queens, I used to drink Budweiser every once in a while. ALWAYS got a headache. I finally figured out that it was because they used rice in their beer (still do). Same with most Japanese beers. I have no problems with regular rice...just Budweiser products.
(Fun Fact: Budweiser can sell their garbage in Germany even though it doesn't pass the beer purity laws aka "Reinheitsgebot" due to the rice, but the EU claimed it was a violation of free trade....but they can't use the Budweiser name because a real beer, Czech Bud uses it. Also called Budvar...best beer on the planet IMO)

Back in the day, before Canada lost its way, we'd go to Montreal to see the Sabres / Habs game at the old Forum. Took ViaRail in Niagara Falls up to Montreal. Great trip, very easy, drink the whole time. Back then their trains ran on time, were clean, and the riders spoke English (or Quebecois).
Thats as opposed to taking Amtrak from Buffalo to Detroit ... that was a fuqing train wreck. No heat, broken door wouldn't close, no booze car. That trip sucked!
