Apparently their Eight Queens Hold'em site wasn't bringing in the views.
Oops. My language blew its budget; compiler, runtime, and standard libraries now come to 7.5MB or 2.5MB compressed, making it 8% the size of Python. The two culprits were TLS (a.k.a SSL, the encryption used by every website), and regular expressions across Unicode, each contributing 20% of the total. For embedded use it automatically drops those and clocks in at a far smaller size.

Also landed today: A full "math" library (those funny buttons on a scientific calculator), alongside autovectorising vector and matrix functions (vectors 100x faster and matrices 1000x faster than native), and a more general linear algebra library built on those, hashing, cryptography, passwords, HTTP client and server modules, and a curl / Python Requests style library.

Claude has actually impressed me; it's a brand new programming language with precisely zero training data, and it's writing working code in it. Yes, it has specs; yes, it has access to the compiler and runtime internals; but the former is up to the developer and the latter will be open source.

When the Gulf of Mexico was renamed by the United States to "Gulf of America", Google Maps had three ways of presenting the name, based on GeoIP location of the viewer:

- Those in Mexico still saw it as "Gulf of Mexico"
- Those in the USA saw it as "Gulf of America"
- Everyone elsewhere saw it as "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)"

I suspect the same thing is going on now because here in Canada, it shows as "Lake Ontario".

It's not unusual any more. The local Fox outlet mentioned another one that happened at the corner of Bourbon and Canal. I guess the only odd thing about these is that the perp is not immediately in custody. In the usual way of things now, an argument starts -- fueled by drugs or liquor -- and one party pulls out and uses a gun. Others video it, and the cops are right there; done.

In the Sixties and earlier, the Quarter used to be simply a neighborhood, with service businesses, a Pontiac dealership, gas stations, small drugstores, mom-and-pop groceries, etc. It began to change in the late Sixties-early Seventies, but wasn't as bad as it is now even when my mother passed in 1986.

I've got a Medigap (Weird Dave of the ONT set me up with it) with Cigna/Healthspring, Mutual of Omaha for dental, and Wellcare for my Rxs. They paid for nearly everything when I had my hernia repair last year. I should have asked if they would accept a Med Advantage plan.

Those are supposed to cover hearing and vision as well, and for much less than I'm paying; but Dave didn't think they were as good a deal.

Wolfus, I already have dental and vision through wife's work. I'm just trying to get the least amount of monthly premiums and lowest cost for surgery. I suppose you can change your plan each year? Next year get what keeps the most money in my pocket for the surgery costs, then go to the zero premium supplement plans the next year. I don't have any other conditions needing constant care.

My grandparents used to live in the Bellfontaine neighborhood of St. Louis from the early 1960s until the mid 1980s. Last time I visited (when Dad passed--2021), it was an entirely black neighborhood where it was unsafe to be around outside after dark. How things change...

Within a mile of my house, Canal Street had multiple department stores, women's and men's clothing shops, and two Woolworth's stores; the public library, newsstands, and the A & P were close, and I recall an Amoco station on one bordering street and the Pontiac dealer on the other. Now it seems if you want something other than expensive antiques, a hotel, a daiquiri, a T-shirt, or some other tourist magnet, you have to drive elsewhere. And there is no place to *put* a car except $$$ parking lots.

I don't recognize it any more and have no desire to see it now.

Naming of geographic features is the responsibility of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, which is underneath the Department of the Interior, which is part of the Executive Branch of the Federal Government.

The President, as head of the Executive Branch, can (and did) direct this via an Executive Order. It's a constitutionally valid use of his powers.

In fact I’ve worked to keep the lawn alive - but these two trees were older and it’s hard to get deep water down to them. It was notable that after two weeks of triple digit temps almost every day, they just turned brown and gave up the ghost.

121 Speaking of Billy Idol. There is a good live performance of Rebel Yell on Youtube where he duets with Miley Cyrus and has Steve Stevens on guitar.

He had to be well into his sixties when it was filmed and he still has his abs. You can tell he and Miley were really having fun. Not my favorite artists, but I appreciate a performance that is well done.
