The Monday ONT has dialed up the wayback machine tonight with very random results.

Harvesting wheat in Ritzville, Adams County, Washington (1936)

Butte, Montana (1939) - possibly E Park Street near S Main - note the circular M&M neon sign for the M&M Cafe and Bar which was a 24-hour miners' hangout since the 1890s). The original M&M Cafe/Bar building burned down on May 7, 2021 but was re-built in a neighboring building starting in 2023. It reportedly still serves all-day breakfast, burgers, and drinks. The original 20-foot neon M&M sign was salvaged from the fire, restored, and rehung on the new building in March 2025.

Chops Bowling on South 13th Street in Omaha, Nebraska (1988 ) - it is still operating and looks exactly the same today.

B-25 assembly at North American Aviation, Inc. in Inglewood, Califiornia (1942)

Christ Chapel in Boise, Idaho (1974) - this church was originally St. Michael's Episcopal Church, built in 1866 at 7th and Bannock Streets in downtown Boise. After St. Michael's Cathedral opened in 1902, it was moved to 15th and Ridenbaugh. It was moved a third time in 1963-64 to the Boise State University campus, restored, and rededicated as a nondenominational chapel.

The James T. Staples (aka "Big Jim") sternwheel river packet underway on the water near Mobile, Alabama (circa 1910) - it typically ran the Tombigbee River route between Mobile and Demopolis, carrying passengers and up to 2,500 bales of cotton. A boiler explosion destroyed the boat in 1913, killing more than two dozen people.

Pentagon construction (circa 1941)

Willard Hotel, Washington, DC (circa 1904) - Ulysses S. Grant liked to sit in the lobby after work, smoking cigars and drinking whiskey. Those seeking favor with him knew to find him there. Hotel lore claims this is how the word "lobbyist" originated. Some hotel staff have claimed that his cigar-smoking ghost still appears in the lobby at night.

Windmill on Mountauk Highway in Suffolk County, New York (circa 1968 ) - it still exists

The Hollywood Dream Factory on Sylvania Avenue, Toledo, Ohio (1988 ) - it sold movie posters, memorabilia, vintage cameras and projectors, etc. At some point, it switched to a mail order business. No sign of the Dream Factory signage remains.

That also reninds me that the first NFL Championship game was moved indoors due to crappy weather. The venu had just hosted the circus and the story is that they did not do a very thorough job of cleaning up after the elephants before opebing kickoff.

37 I was born in Butte. Dad was in school. He was an NCR employee, but I think some of his schooling was through MT Tech. Not sure. We were not there long, moved to Billings when I was about 6 months old. I was born in St. James hospital, the old one, the one that is now an empty edifice populated by bums and the restless dead.

49 I've been inside Ebbets Grill a few times, which is in the same building as Willard Hotel. On the 3rd floor of the Pentagon, there is a corridor dedicated to the building and reconstruction (post 9/11). It's very interesting. If you tour it, you probably will go through it. I work there so I can meander around the building and do frequently. The perks of mid shift. That windmill? Long Island? There is a very old and very respected golf course there. I'll have to look it up as the name escapes me. Also, Montauk has a 1/4, asphalt race track (Riverhead raceway). I could be wrong about that. In the area anyway. Watch lots of racing.

The theme was "World of Tomorrow", so you can bet there were people looking over the exhibits since RCA and Ford played a big role that year. For those unfamiliar, the World's Fair at Flushing, NY started in early 1939, but didn't end until late the following year.

77 The 1939 World's Fair featured two exhibits that celebrated the female form. There was a Salvador Dali Pavilion featuring actual topless mermaids swimming about and an outdoor exhibit (separate admission) that was a Sun Worshipper theme. Topless or sheer topped women sunning, playing badminton, walking about. Most were recruited from NYC burlesque houses and mostly very attractive. There's film and pictures of them online somewhere.

89 Joemarine, it was a significant deal to about 65 Boy Scouts from northern Oklahoma. New York City! We rode the subways without harm and went to an Automat for lunch one day. Slept in a National Guard gym in Queens, I think. The fair itself was overwhelming! We were there for four days and I would guess I missed seeing at least a third of it! Chrysler had their turbine car idling for some extended period - it was running on some kind of vegetable oil.

99 I don't doubt that the loss of elephants didn't help, but most circuses were in financial trouble long before that. I took my kids to Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey, and the selling of schlock in the aisles was nonstop. I read somewhere that it just wasn't a financially viable business model anymore, and as I said, I think the acts were outdated and today's kids were bored with them.

Cirque de Soleil is probably the only successful modern circus, and it's more of a theater experience in many ways.

136 We stayed at the Willard Hotel by accident when I was 6yrs old (bro was 4). My father never believed in making hotel reservations on trips as something would work out. We arrived bedraggled and tired. I remember the lobby and not much else other than the White House was near, which we toured but did not see Jackie or JFK. I remember Mt. Vernon & Arlington. How short the beds were at Mt. Vernon as our ancestors were midgets.

Before we got there we were in Gatlingburg where we were inducted into the Confederate Army and rode on a train. My brother took this seriously. I found out on this trip that the South lost & it ticked me off to be on the losing team.

My father got a speeding ticket, which was also normal, and agreed that he was speeding. Had to follow the hwy patrol to the courthouse to pay.

Little bro would get car sick a lot & of course did on this trip. I would cling to the passenger door to get as far away as I could. He once harfed into his straw cowboy hat and my mother washed it & kept it, which grossed me out further.

Daddy felt we were close enough to NYC that we might as well go but my mother had enough & we went home.

It is no wonder I have phobias.

There's an odd link between Hawaiian royalty and Kaiser Wilhelm. The Queen asked him to send her a music master so her people could have the blessing of musical education. He did -- a good one, and there's a story with that -- so all "Hawaiian" music has some German roots. And that is how we got the unique form, "Hula March." It's some of the base stock of country music.

158 Well, in the continuing saga of how to most efficiently scrap out a car alternator, I think I have it about nailed. Used a cutoff wheel in the angle grinder to lop off the slip ring end of the shaft flush with the face of the pole piece. Put it in the drill press and drilled three 9/32" holes in the cut end, about a half inch deep. That relieved the interference fit, and two screwdrivers popped the pole piece off the shaft with next to no effort, exposing the wire spool. End flange peeled of the spool with pliers, and grabbed the inner end of the wire, and pulled out a few yards. With the inside layers pulled out, the whole spool came free, and into the copper pail it went.

The stator, I cut through at one point with the cutting disc, cutting both laminations and windings. Then I opened it up straight, when opened all the wire slots. It was then easy to pull all the windings free.

174 Nope. Talked to mom on the phone today. She's really not eating or drinking now and said "I want to get outta here". Then she asked about mother and dad. Her parents died 32 years ago. There's not much left of her because she's just dying of old age. Not on any painkillers stronger than OTC stuff which is good. She was happy when I told her the big cat she's fond of came by this morning. So when the time comes, I'll fly out, take care of arrangements, and then pack up what I'm taking back. Probably head to I-80 from D.C. and then straight on in.

Riverboats were incredibly dangerous, partly because of the rivers, and then there was short-sighted boatbuilding and the expensive way to discover the need for safety features.

I'm pretty sure Sultana was the reason why later steamboats had automatic refill pumps, called a "doctor." When people went up a gangplank, they'd ask "Is there a doctor on board," and it wasn't about their need for medical care.

Funny thing about that. Oakland jacked its waste hauling fees for small landlords in 2016 to fund the corruption your post refers to. I was tasked with drafting a lawsuit that the rate increases violated the CA constitution. I knew jack shit about this but diligently studied up. Oakland got my suit thrown out on the grounds that the rates were not unconstitutional. Later (I was not involved), the CA Supreme Court said I should have won the demurrer. :->

The explosion was apparently due to a badly repaired boiler. Badly repaired because a proper repair would have taken days and have lost the Sultana the fee it was receiving for returning the soldiers promptly.

The lunatic's name was Layne Lundeen, an AZ realtor. Cahn said they were having a friendly conversation, and got to talking about their religious beliefs. Lundeen said he rejected Christ and Christianity after his divorce (he's now on his third wife or something).

Cahn then apparently tried to encourage him to not to do that, and that's what began to set him off.

Cahn then disengaged, but Lundeen sort of kept going with. Then the "Altar of Pergamon" book came up somehow, and Lundeed really lost then.

At one point, Lundeen told Cahn he was going to "punch your Jew face in" or something like that.

Last winter wasn't so bad. We usually average high 20's to low 30's. I few years ago it was stupid cold. It came on in November and didn't let up until march. It was 4 degrees on new years eve. I don't want to see that again.

Ol' Randall Carlson can comically get bogged down in some minutiae and drag things on and on with some of his videos.

He'll get sidetracked by some simple calculation he wants to make, get all screwed up, and go on and on.

One funny one is he and some others were discussing that Nepal flood, and some sends him the exact coordinates of the glacier collapse to put in his map program. So he starts trying to type it manually from the screen email or chat message into the box in the map program.

And gets the digits all messed up.... Randall, just copy and paste! Yeah, I could do that.... So 5 minutes of Randall fumbling with coordinates.

YouTube TV is a live streaming service that has all the normal cable channels on it. It’s basically like cable/satellite over internet. Hulu and a few other services do something similar.

That’s why it’s $80, and that’s just basic, add-on channels will run you north of $120 for everything.
I looked into getting it to replace Dish satellite but didn’t do it.

YT also has YouTube Premium for $14.99/month (last time I checked) for YouTube without ads.

Tough question. I wouldn't know where to move either. I hate extreme heat, and I hate extreme cold. I like having 4 seasons actually. When things are normal around here we get a couple weeks of stupid hot, and a few weeks of stupid cold. I can deal with that. It makes the exceptions easier to deal with when things are usually normal and bearable. One year we had 19 snow storms, and we also had a few years of nothing, not a flake. Last year we had one storm, and maybe one the year before. We had a January that was 60 degrees for over half the month, and january where it probably didn't go over 10 degrees.

YouTube TV is a separate system from regular YouTube, it may have a second app on the Roku store that confused you. But if you have cable the kids would have the same experience, just different channel numbers for Cartoon Network or whatever they wanted to watch.

Regular YouTube is free on every platform through the web browser or a dedicated app. It just has lots of ads to pay for it (unless you pay for Premium).

Mrs B brought home the pizza from hell. She was at the beach today and there is a pizza place there with gigantic size pizza. She brought home a whole pie. I did a 150 mile ride today, stopped at a few places, ate a cheeseburger called the hangover. It had bacon, cheese, taylor ham (porkroll), and a fried egg on it, and came with a shitload of fries. On the way home I stopped at this one wawa gas station which seems to be were all the bikes seem to stop to gas up as they leave the pine barrens and shore area. Got a coffee, some goodies to go with it. Then I came home an hour or so later, killed 2 huge slices of the barbarian size pizza, sat in the recliner and passed out until a few hours ago. The pizza did me in. Now I'm wide awake.
