The BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport community gathered to honor and welcome home U.S. Army Air Forces 1st Lt. Walter Bateman on Friday evening, a Maryland native and American aviator killed during World War II. Bateman piloted a B-24D Liberator bomber that was shot down Aug. 16, 1943, during a bombing mission against enemy airfields at Foggia, Italy. Bateman was 22, and there were no survivors among the 10 crew members.

Lt. Bateman was serving as a pilot with the 67th Bombardment Squadron, 44th Bombardment Group when his B-24D Liberator failed to return from a mission over Italy on August 16, 1943. He and nine fellow airmen were listed as missing in action, and for decades, his and his crew's remains were unidentified. He was 22 years old.
On May 29, 2026, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency confirmed Lt. Bateman's identity using modern forensic technology. Tonight, after more than eight decades, he will return home to Maryland...where his story first began.

US Senator Bernie Sanders will soon introduce a bill to completely ban Flock cameras.
If it passes, Flock and other AI mass surveillance systems will be banned in the US to protect people's privacy.
While I applaud the idea of getting rid of intrusive cameras like this, I also wonder how realistic it is. It isn't like Flock is the first publicly oriented camera. Are we going to get rid of ALL of them. More to the point, has Bernie actually done any work to ensure that his bill passes Constitutional muster, or is he just trying to garner some quick favorable publicity. I think we all know the answer to that.

As part of his Octave Celebration, we are holding a procession during the recognition of St. Francis' Transitus (I know, I know, stick with me) in which we have invited one of our local mostly Spanish speaking parishes to help host. This has caused quite a stir with one or two of our gang since they are racists and assholes. During a VERY contentious planning meeting today, one of our other Diocesan priests offered that he knows a very talented bagpiper who would be thrilled to join the procession. It was claimed he knows The Mexican Hat Dance.

So there's a tropical disturbance in the Gulf. Yesterday they were saying 10% of development and spaghetti models had it going into Louisiana. Right now they're saying 70% and it's hitting the Upper Texas coast.

I can't tell you how much I abhor the current educational system, and the nitwit, self-absorbed, immature "teachers" that make it up. This is, absolute, nonsense...and the second this hit the public, the principal should have yanked her into the office and explained to her that she has the right to be stupid, puerile and pathetic on her own time. But, as a teacher she sets boundaries and examples for her students. She doesn't act more immature than they are.

I was in a Home Despot today. They have giant plastic skeletons, maybe ten feet tall, and life-sized pirate skeletons in costumes. The life-sized ones were priced at 400 bucks. Friggin' insane, it is. And you know what I couldn't get? A six-pack or ten-pack of #2 Phillips driver bits for cordless impact drivers or drills. The kind used for driving drywall screws. Probably the best-selling driver bit of any kind. And they are a consumable. They should be sold by the pound, like nails.

US Army Air Forces was All-Volunteer, too. It was a hell of a thing, because they had a policy where 25 combat missions had to be completed before getting rotated out. Some missions would lose 10% of the aircraft in one day, and they kept having to go back and try and hit the same target again. Then they (Well, Hap Arnold probably) raised the number of missions to 30, then later 35. I’m not sure I could have handled that well.

New England waters are about the ocean. Hard to explain, I can't, and not for everyone but if it gets you it's almost like a drug. I can't imagine not being around it.

I pretty much grew up at the jersey shore because my grandmother had a summer house there. I know where you're coming from. I'm not a beach person either. To me getting greased up and sizzling in the sun like a fucking piece of bacon is right up there with ball surgery with a rusty soup can lid. The water though, I'm not sure I can live land locked. I like seeing the water. I like hearing the water. I would love having a house on the beach. There is something about the water.

I am now in the VA in my area. I've been impressed with it so far. I am in a kind of high-speed getting things squared away mode. My high blood pressure first and foremost. Have an appointment tomorrow to get my BP meds dialed in. But also some other things. None life-threatening, but, needing attention.
Apparently my local VA is one of the best in the nation.
Best of all, I got the lifetime national parks pass. Yes!

Seriously, and this was something I didn't know about until recently. The mirror for Nancy Grace was "donated" to NASA by the NRO -- they gave them two of 'em in fact. It was part of some super secret spy satellite program they weren't going to need.
A part of that was the requirement those mirrors cannot be used for earth observation, as that would reveal too much detail about the secret mirror tech.
That tech is probably at least 20 years old by now, probably obsolete, but still.

For summer school I had an (otherwise hot) 9th grade “English teacher” who sneered at my reading The Hunt For Red October because it was “a man’s book”. She would have been shocked to hear that Tom Clancy himself reported that about a third of his fan mail came from women.
(I say “English teacher” because in a normal school year, she taught dance and business, but not English. She may have been hot, but on reflection she was a real bitch.)

Cool day (finally!) so I got some stuff done outside. Back into the broiler tomorrow, though. Ugh.
Broken or no-go engagement is sad, but better than what happened to my 2nd cousin.
She & BF were engaged, set the date, booked the church and paid for reception venue... and then the dude called it off *day of* !!!
At least he had the (I have no word for it.. balls, maybe?) to stand at the church door and greet all their guests, and inform them that there would not be a wedding that day.
There was a brief church service, and then a meal for all at the reception hall anyway.
At least the guy didn't totally stand her up!

An older guy came into military museum where I volunteered. Said he'd not long before received a call from a stranger, an old USMC vet in WI. Guy said he had info about the older guy's father's death, at Iwo Jima.
Older guy's father had been a Marine officer. WI vet said he remembered him and his kid sister, in their Sunday best, at promotion ceremonies etc at Camp Pendleton, with their mom, standing next to the staff car. This alone set the old guy back a bit (it was all accurate).
WI vet said he'd been wounded, was being treated aboard an LST in an area used as expedient sick bay/surgical area. He was conscious. Shortly after he got there, they brought in old guy's father - serious head wound. WI vet said he asked the surgeon if the officer, his commander, would likely make it. Doc shook his head "no". So nearly 70 years later, this guy learned some details of his father's last moments, from a stranger who called him.

The problem with brussels sprouts (hear me out...) is that the outer leaves get bitter, especially during hot weather. I don't ever buy them in Summer! Late Autumn and Early Spring are best, as they are a "cool season" crop.
They're just tiny cabbages, after all. If you don't like cabbage.. well, that's ok, stay away from b'sprouts..
I will cut off their base, & peel off the dark, outermost leaves. Then steam them. Smother with butter! Lightly salt & pepper.

Today I cooked & shredded chicken for tomorrow night's enchiladas. Will mix some plain chicken meat with BBQ sauce for hubby's lunch tomorrow, then bring him a couple enchiladas next day.

The Brussel sprouts thing is genetics. Some people, and I am one have a taste variation that allows them to taste a specific group of compounds that those without the genes cannot taste. That compound tastes very bitter. And to me, they're just little balls of bitter grenades that go off in my mouth.
Another fascinating thing is Brussel sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, collard greens, and several others are all the same species of plant! It's just like different dog breeds, various traits have been enhanced by selective breeding.
I love cabbage and broccoli. And the reason is that bitter compound just isn't there in the concentrations it is in Brussel sprouts. Cabbage, especially the outer leaves can get higher concentrations of that, and I have tasted that bitterness there a little bit from time to time. It depends on growing conditions to some extent, and I forget the details.
