Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the Final August Edition? That came quickly, don't you think? As promised, next week we begin the ever-popular September editions!

FUNdamentals of MoMe'n

They Mome'n down in Texas!

The time has come to begin the discussion of the upcoming TXMoMe in Corsicana, TX on October 16-17. This is the eleventh annual TXMoMe, or Conservative Burning Man as it's popularly known, and it promises to be a doozy. A double-doozy even. A bigly double-doozy! If you're in either the Northern or Southern Hemisphere of the Planet of the Earth, contact Ben Had for details on attending. The dates and email links for all MoMes are always helpfully included on the blog's main page, left sidebar.

What started years ago as a small get-together and informal plinking session lasting a couple of hours has matured into a full scale jamboree-hootenanny including a program of shooting activities for both handguns and rifles over two days. I have to thank Ben Had, Cow Horse Queen and RancherBob for making this whole thing happen and providing the opportunity for the shooting to comprise such a significant portion of the event.

But wait! There's more! Combine that with world class food and drink, and the even world classier company of your fellow Morons, and you have a weekend that legends are made of. For those not inclined to shoot (?), there are non-stop opportunities to relax in the shade of the carport or under a handy nearby tree with a beverage and visit with your online pals to your hearts content, which is really what the whole damn thing is about in the first place..

Allow me to be serious for a minute. I have said this probably two hundred and eighty-three times now. These gatherings are a really good time, and I know of no one who expresses regret after having attended one. Actually it goes beyond that. It's not just a weekend of laughs, it's an opportunity to connect with lots of like-minded people and create lasting friendships and priceless memories. No kidding. Think that's hyperbole? It snot. Would your ol' pal Weasel lie to you? Well, yes he would, but not about this. TXMoMe veterans will attest to the funness and completely laid-back nature of the event. Don't be a dork, do yourself a favor and get yo' ass to Texas!

Specifics of the Friday/Saturday schedule of activities will be posted here in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

My burn is delayed a few hours, I FaceTime with a buddy down in Tejas and he likes to wait for the infernal heat to abate before sitting outside.

Thinking I'll try another of the Blackbird cigars I got in a sampler. Sort of duds, so far. Disappointing. Or maybe an Oliva Serie V or a My Father La Duena (sweet little lanceros).

14 No shootin', but finally got Leviathan's (Sacramento) paperwork back blessing my transfer of some inherited gubs into the state. The P7 is the only curiosity of the bunch, that and perhaps the little Walther TPH 22LR.

A couple of Model 18s in excellent condition, speaking of rimfire. A Model 66 no-dash that's lightly used, and a nice fresh-looking Ruger SP101 with a CrimsonTrace grip I'm hoping to give to my niece (her momma wants her gunned up for truck camping trips etc).

Colt Combat Commander and another P7 to be sold to a friend from shooting matches who's a real collector.

Actually saw a report of a shooting in ..... Switzerland, of all places. Not common. A fairly heavily armed society, but, a society. Standards, expectations, respect for law, all that exotic stuff I've read about from earlier periods of US history.

Well, I'm not sure, since you haven't met all of the qualifications, to the best of my knowledge.

1. I've never seen you do this.
2. I've never seen you do this, either, but I will stipulate the possibility.
3. I have observed this, both here online, and IRL.
4. While I have not observed this personally, reputable sources (specifically CBD) imply they have, particularly when involving .45 ACP.

Since I appendix carry with a simple Uncle Mikes inside the waist holster that you can remove and put back easily I keep mine in the slot between the center console and passenger seat.

30 Ah, perhaps the negative IQ mayor of Chicago is doing better than we thought. Homicides about the same as last year at this point (262), of which 228 shot and killed. Total shot about the same at 1100+.

Actually looks about the same, though I'd bet the cartel-related shenanigans have decreased.

37 polynikes I am sure the overall crime stats are massaged or simply underweighted as with most major metros, but the body count's fairly objective and concrete. In any case it's an outrage and scandal that is simply ignored. With what seems to be the comprehensive collapse of the "education" system there, and the obvious collapse of cultural standards for select demos, seems like we'll have this outrage continuing forever.

If you are here, then you know that Ace of Spades is a "vibrant" on-line community and if you stay, you probably enjoy that community. A MoMe is kind of an extension of the on-line community into the real world, where lurkers still lurk and conversers still converse.

When I first traveled up the road to Corsicana, the conversers all had interesting things to say and I learned a bunch of noms-de-blog that I learned to look out for. You'll never find a more welcoming group than you'll find at a MoMe, and you can quietly ask questions about the blog's in-jokes, which is a major advantage over asking on the blog.

In short, the Texas MoMe is unutterably fun. Someday, I hope to try one of the others, but for now I hope to see you all in Corsicana.

Exciting news. My purchase made the trip from VA to MD without a problem arriving a day early. Went to FFL with proper paperwork, filled out the forms, pd my fee to the State Police, now have to wait 7 days and get the Not Disapproved letter.
Had to laugh as there were two guys wanting to make a purchase and had no idea that they needed permission. It will cost me an extra $90 and a two week wait but it's done.

Damn, where are the right-wing billionaires when you need them? Someone should write a modest check so a permanent staff can keep a site like that going full speed.

As of a few weeks back, the "Chicago shot clock" showed a shooting every 4 minutes 36 seconds. Something their 400-lb governor can be proud of.

Unless it's a long drive, say over 3 hours, it stays in my waistband. With the caveat that I probably carry lighter than most of y'all -- a Sig P290 -- and in a very well made holster.

60 I went to my first Texas MoMe 8 weeks after meeting the horde in person at the NoVa MOMe for the first time. When I got there, I got a hug from Ben Had and felt like I had known everyone my whole life.Doesn't alter whether you are an I tovert or an extrovert, you will fit right in. It is an unforgettable experience and you will want to go again and again.

Exciting news. My purchase made the trip from VA to MD without a problem arriving a day early. Went to FFL with proper paperwork, filled out the forms, pd my fee to the State Police, now have to wait 7 days and get the Not Disapproved letter.
Had to laugh as there were two guys wanting to make a purchase and had no idea that they needed permission. It will cost me an extra $90 and a two week wait but it's done.

AAFES (Army and Air Force Exchange Services, i.e. "the PX") sells firearms at select locations (also Ft. Belvoir in VA). NEX (Navy Exchange) does not, at least in the DC area.

133 My new IWB holster arrived last week. It's the Falco A914, and it has been a lot fun getting it adjust for CCH work. Falco does an excellent holster work. The Beretta PX 4 fit like a glove right out of the box, and it's very comfortable to wear.

Sorry that you had that event. Dunno if PSA's bolt carrier is the same but CDNN Sports has Anderson's DMPS pattern LR-308 parts. I think PSA uses DMPS low pattern for the upper receiver itself but I think the bolt carriers are the same for either.

Anderson got bought out by Ruger and has disappeared into the outer darkness. CDNN got the remnant parts.

I need to get a .22 semi-auto pistol. I need something to work on not flinching and all of that, where it's so very easy to see/feel. My little Heritage 6-shooter takes too long to reload for that sort of practice.

151 My two gun related items, I got a grab bag of parts as I was looking for a couple of screws for my Trapdoor restoration. Turns out I got several other parts--a frozen 1863 Springfield plate with the full lock set and hammer. An upper barrel band and screw, and a buttplate.

Cleaned and removed the active rust from the parts and got the lock working again. Drilled out the snapped screw ends in the plate and tumbler and am having to make a pin for the bridle.

Probably not going back with the odd and obsolete 10-28 screw for the hammer and will substitute something more modern. If anyone needs such a tap to restore threads, you can still get a HSS tap from S&S Firearms for about $20 bucks for the 10-28 screw holes that need to be tapped.

The Colt Service Model Ace pistols and Colt .22/.45 conversion kits did a good job of putting a .22 training pistol into the same frame as the service handgun. But they required constant cleaning. The dirty .22 ammo would jam up the pistol if the user didn't clean the pistol after each range session.

This has been a subject of some consternation for me over the years. I'm still working on it, but it isn't really accessible sitting at 3-ish-o'clock, behind the seat belt buckle. And I often carry with my shirt tucked over the holster. When carrying tucked, it becomes even harder muck with it, as trying to tuck the shirt back in doesn't look good.

And, there's nowhere really useful to put a holster in my car. I guess I need a new car to fix that. FWPs, right, CBD?

And I often carry with my shirt tucked over the holster. When carrying tucked, it becomes even harder muck with it, as trying to tuck the shirt back in doesn't look good.

Bottom line, guy helped a lot with the overall project and I didn't sweat the numbers. And he's got a nice boat in Seward I'm invited to go fishing on next time in town.

I have one that I got as a gift. Fired it rarely as I prefer my Rugers in 22 LR. Since I don't carry a 1911 nor plan to, don't want to build muscle memory on a platform I don't carry. I did carry a Browning HP for time and when Springfield came out with the XD that had a small thumb safety in the 45 ACP, carried that a bit. The thumb safety was in the same exact place as the Browning High Power was. Someone did their homework.

Only negative is that that particular XD variant does not match up in parts with the standard XD-45.

Good to hear that it all turned out well for you. The H&K collector's market isn't as big as that for Colt, S&W, or Winchester, but it's there. Pre-ban H&Ks ca fetch a good amount $$, especially if they're complete and still have all of the extras, which yours had.

A surprisingly accurate pistol, I just realize that if I had focused on just one gun, I'd be damn good with it. Because every gun is a little different and when you switch out carry guns, you lose a little precision.

Anyway, .45s are not 9mm. My first Dickin drill I got 9/10 cold. My last drill...3....out of....10.

Not my finest.

Arg. Gonna blame familiarity. And honestly, the G21 isn't that heavy. It's bulky but not hard to carry all week.

One advantage to shooting for a long time is having the chance to learn which handguns suit you and acquire them. As far as 22lr goes, except for the Ruger Mk II target pistols I treasure, all of mine are revolvers. And I've had the chance to find wonderful used examples at bargain prices.

Hard to beat a day at the range with a lot of 22 ammo and some guns that have proven themselves.

But pocket carry is ... unwieldy in office/church slacks.

H&K's mags are always $$, imagine the P7s are the same. Think I have 7 or 8 for the M8 I'm keeping. The 6 for the PSP I'm selling to a buddy were the ones the dealer shipped off to me without question, illustrating how good it is to do business with him. I wanted my friend to have lots of mags for his collector's item.

We discovered a brand-new gun safe, still in shipping box, late in the game, and happily gave it to the dealer. He said they could use it for their program where they store veterans' guns for free during difficult/crisis times. Overall it was a very interesting good experience.

A big problem with out of production firearms that were imported and not that many were sold here. Sig P6 (here, the P225) is that way.

Original mags are about 70-80 each now. Reason I quit carrying one when mags got expensive. Have ten or so mags that are worth more cumulatively than the pistol.

Smith and Wesson 2nd gen and 3rd gen with their compact 690 and then 6900 series are that way except you can fit a full size S&W 5900 mag into them. They didn't change the mag feed lips and feed geometry of the barrel and frame so a 3rd generation 6900 series can use the 5900 series mags. The 6900 mags won't fit the 5900 as they are too short but vice versa gives you up to 17 rounds. Some folks make grip extenders and others have cut down the 17 rounders to make the original 12 round mags for the 6900 series.

The 3900 series though is not that way and mags are scarce and expensive for that single stack.

Depends on the jurisdiction. Some places that are gun-friendly have provisions for inadvertently exposing the firearm. Others will interpret that provision literally: If someone can see it, it's not "concealed" anymore.

That could work as well but semi autos and ankle holsters have an issue unless you regularly clean said pistol. Picks up more crap down low than in the waistband. If I have to pocket carry, I use a revolver normally--you can fire through the pocket with no jamming (assuming you dehorn the trigger spur). Semi auto will likely end up jamming after one shot.

Another, now discontinued but cheap and widely available is the Springfield XDS --very thin and has the grip safety and trigger blade but no other safety. Single stack which is why (plus a big recall) that the XDS was discontinued with the Hellcat sans grip safety and double stack. That is because the Sig P320 has become the new it gun for the sub compacts.

But, Springfield also made the XDS in 45 ACP and a brief run of 40 S&W. Plus in 45 ACP and 9mm, they made optics ready models at the end of production and some 4 inch barrel models instead of the 3.3

French military firearms have unique styling. I think they made some of the obsolete Gras rifles into training rifles for the Lebel as well in 22 LR. Not sure if it was a unit thing or whether it was a formal program.

Well, that's why I carry tucked (IWB) - professional office job and church. Or, I have to wear a jacket and tuck the shirt behind (and never take the jacket off). And the pockets on those sorts of pants are too flimsy (for me) to put something even as heavy as a .32 Beretta or a Bond Arms derringer in there. Stuff swings around and gets all out of sorts.

So, I continue with the IWB-tucked and wonder what to do if bad things happen while I'm still seated/buckled in a car. (And don't get me started on those seat-installed side air bags. Getting in and out of that seat is a pain - my mag on the other side scrapes frequently if the seat is deep enough.)

In 45? I never had much problem with mine in 9mm. In fact, it is fairly heavy for a 9mm semi compact. I ended up though just recently buying a slide, recoil spring, and barrel for the 4.0 version. A bit more weight and longer sight line for aging eyes.

Yeah, that's beltless in the same way you're not wearing shorts if you're wearing boxers. It's a belt, but you're wearing it under your pants.

I prefer a belly band if you're going that route. (Which is also a sort of belt, but really more of a girdle. Have we invoked Piper enough yet for her to appear?)
