The Classical Saturday Coffee Break & Prayer Revival

Good morning boys and girls and everything in between. A big thank you to TRex for filling in a week ago. My computer died. And he was gracious enough to fill in at the last moment.

Before we enter the Prayer Revival just a few housekeeping matters to go over. (Rulz for those of you in Bedford Falls)

1) This is an open thread. Feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate
2) Be kind, be nice. And for heaven's sake, stay in your lane.
3) No, you may not run with sharp objects. I don't care if Timmy's mom let him.
4) Have a great weekend! Except for Timmy's mom. I hope she spends it at the ER.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List
Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.
Prayer Requests:
5/23 – I used to have a Different Nic could use some prayers as he waits for the results of a biopsy of a mass on his prostate.
6/23 Update – The latest update is that he has stage 2, “unfavorable intermediate”, which he notes is an awful name, but what it means is, it is in the middle, but bad enough that they want to treat it. It’s more aggressive than previously thought. He is at the point where he has to decide on treatment options, which means choosing which set of pretty unfortunate side effects he prefers.
8/20 Update – He has finished his radiation treatment, so all he has left are blood tests and waiting. Thanks for everything.
7/25 – Matthew Kant Cipher humbly asks for prayers for Marshall, a long-time friend and HS classmate of Mrs. MKC, who is currently hospitalized with heart failure.
8/7 Update – Marshall passed away after multiple organs failed. Matthew Kant Cipher humbly asks the Horde to pray for the repose of his soul and that God’s perpetual light would shine upon him.
7/25 – Teresa in Fort Worth posted an update. She is still doing fine. Her chemo pump seems to be working and everything appears stable for now. She says she is incredibly blessed! She is working on a stocking for an as-yet-not-born grandchild. She would appreciate prayers for a successful IVF procedure and pregnancy for her daughter and hubby. Next week, Teresa and her husband will be going to California to visit their daughter who lives there and her family.
8/4 Update – Teresa was admitted to the hospital while on vacation in California. She has a bad infection – cellulitis - not due to the cancer. She is being treated with antibiotics and hopefully it will be cleared up in a couple of days.
7/29 – Notsothoreau asked for prayers for Billy Ray’s mother, who was just admitted to the hospital with pneumonia. She is a cancer survivor and chemo destroyed her immune system, so this is a big worry.
8/2 Update – Billy Ray’s mother is feeling better, on oxygen and medication. She is not out of the woods, but has stabilized. She appreciates the prayers from around the globe and says thank you very much.
8/16 Update – Billy Ray’s mother is at home, recovering, and down to just needing a little oxygen at night. One of the doctors told her that he didn’t think she was going to make it. Prayer works.
7/29 – TecumsehTea wrote that MrTea’s diagnosis is colon cancer stage 4. They are praying for guidance for how to proceed.
8/12 Update – MrTea will start radiation treatments for the tumor in the sigmoid colon on Monday – 10 treatments. They are not sure what will follow; they are still looking at options. Surgery is not an option. The cancer has metastasized to the lymph node nearest the tumor and there are 3-5 small spots in the liver. There are also spots in his lung which are indeterminate. He continues on fenben and ivermectin. Prayers are appreciated.
7/30 – David sent an update on his wife, Susan, who we have been praying for as she is treated for cancer. Susan is still doing well and her numbers are headed in the right direction, but they are still having issues with the side effects of the chemotherapy. It is manageable, but they have to increase the number of office visits for additional treatments. Some days are really good right now, but others are only bearable with the Lord’s grace. They are so grateful for the prayers on their behalf.
8/20 Update – Things are not going quite as well now. Please pray, as Susan has picked up a really bad cough. The coughing is so bad that she doesn’t want to eat. Please pray that this illness passes quickly.
8/26 Update – Susan’s cough has gotten so bad that they did X-rays on her chest. It might be pneumonia. She is in the hospital. Her sodium and blood pressure are low and she is not eating much now. They are trying to turn this around and ask for everyone’s prayers.
8/1 – Tonypete asked for prayers for his BIL, who is a developmentally disabled adult and has been living independently (sort of) for decades but the time has come for them to make some changes in his living arrangements and personal finances. This will not go well as he has VERY poor impulse control and anger issues. His dear wife has POA but that is limited in its reach and it is probably time for her to be granted guardianship.
8/15 Update – BIL was released from the hospital, so all is well.
8/7 – neverenoughcaffiene asks for prayers for Lynell, who was recently diagnosed with a rapidly growing brain tumor. Surgery was performed and they were not able to remove all of the cancer. Her prognosis for survival is one year. She is being treated with chemo and radiation. On top of her diagnosis and treatment, she recently broke her ankle. Please pray for Lynell and her husband as they navigate this new reality.
8/8 – Ace-Endorsed Author A. H. Lloyd posted that Mrs. Lloyd will undergo a double mastectomy to remove the breast cancer. She has advanced to Stage 1. Much hinges on the biopsy to determine the specific sub-category of cancer and whether chemo is necessary. Please pray for her in this time of need.
8/22 Update – Mrs. Lloyd is healing ahead of schedule and the surgeon was amazed at her progress. She is still in pain and has limited mobility, but each day she is gaining more freedom of movement. That is the good news; the bad news was the unrealistic expectations set by the medical staff. The surgery was much more significant, and she will also need chemo, contrary to what she was told before.
8/8 – Retired Buckeye Cop requested prayers for his nephew, Josh, who is losing his business due to overwhelming debt. Old addictions have returned; he is drinking heavily. He is currently estranged from his family. His mother is Mrs. Cop’s kid sister.
8/12 – Joe Kidd asked for prayers for a friend’s cousin, who is beginning chemo treatments for stage 3 cancer.
8/14 – RandomDave asked for renewed prayers for his job situation. He just found out that the position he was close to getting went to someone else, and doesn’t know where to turn. He hates to ask, but is getting desperate. He has a GiveSendGo set up; please contact Annie’s Stew for more info. Thanks to those who have already given and thank you for the prayers. They are keeping him from giving up.
8/15 – Donna V contacted Mis. Hum. to let the Horde know the following: “Please let the horde know I am doing fine in hospice”. She would appreciate your prayers.
8/15 – Buck requested prayers for his wife. She is diabetic, and had a bad day on 8/14, with weakness, vomiting, irregular pulse, high blood pressure. She has had sepsis 3 times. They went to ER, but they only gave her meds for nausea, and now she’s back home. Pray that she recovers quickly. Thanks to all.
8/15 – Intruder Driver asked for prayers for Tonya, who was burned over 90% of her body in a gas explosion in Cabo San Lucas. She is now in a hospital in Mexico City. She has a long road to recovery, if she survives.
8/22 Update – Tonya did not survive her burns. Prayers for her and her husband Rusty, who were/are active members of their local church in Mexico.
8/27 – P asks for prayers for the soul of her nephew, C, who committed suicide on 8/17. He was only 32. May he find the peace in the afterlife that he could not find in this life.
8/26 – Teresa in Fort Worth asks for prayers for her BIL, Dick, who was found dead in the alley behind their house in Texas. He had been in declining health and had dementia. They aren’t sure how long he was outside before he passed away. Teresa’s SIL seems to be handling it okay so far. Teresa also asks for prayers for a former neighbor, Melissa, who is hospitalized, recovering from a second stem cell/bone marrow transplant as they attempt to cure her leukemia. She now has blood blisters in her mouth and throat. She had to be intubated before her throat closed completely. This might be her body rejecting the transplant.

8 Anyway, I have reached a point where I'm not really up to complex tasks due to ongoing unrelieved stress, chronic burnout, and possible/probable medical factors, which no shock with the depression and homelessness and all. Retirement and disability seem the only thing for it now, which likely means locked in poverty for whatever of my life remains. Praying for a clear path and a mind that can handle this. I feel an utter failure.

My dad moved sideways. Instead of being in charge of everything, he became the safety guy, because he knew everything that would go on during a project. He finally retired at 72.

24 As for me, I'm still doing the job search/apply/hope thing, but I had a good interview yesterday and I've got at least two interviews pending tomorrow. I keep praying that God put me in the job He wants me in, and helps me accept whatever that job happens to be. (Well, after I catch myself praying for one or the other specific jobs to be 'the one'... I slap myself on the wrist rather often, sadly).

26 It’s important to stay busy. Purpose, motivation, direction. Without strong family ties it becomes difficult. Ever notice it’s the people who never have time to do anything, get the most done? Something like that, anyway.

I don’t consider myself getting depressed personally but it is easy to become demoralized. I like to think there’s an important distinction. Given that so much of our popular culture is intended to do exactly that, is troubling. Don’t let the bastards get ya down!

I love the outdoors in this great country. Sold the house and travel full time RV. It definitely ain’t for everyone, But after staring at 4 walls for a few years I couldn’t deal with that. This is a great big country and I want to see it.

I took my walk in the steamy soup outside, got cleaned up, and have dined on some yogurt with honey, for now. Coffee too. In a bit I will run out to my favorite coffee shop, the one run by the Community Coffee people, and have something more solid to eat. Then, library time, I think!

Stirling has had his breakfast, and Dagny, picky and reluctant to try something new, finally ate her portion, or most of it. They're set.

44 A lot of people, when you mention “camping” they automatically think of misery and deprivation. It doesn’t have to be. I never went to the woods to suffer, and I guess I’m grateful for the experience of being able to operate in this environment to some degree. I’m probably not like most folks, my needs are pretty simple. I like to read, drink coffee, and get something in my belly once in a while. I was paying a couple hundred bucks a month to heat and cool a house. Now I can do it for a buck or two a day, maybe slightly more for A/C.

They are tricked out pretty nice inside, they could be parked anywhere without drawing attention the way an RV or camper trailer would. I maybe should have went that route. RV style life isn’t for everyone that’s for sure.

56 Data Centers are critical to rebuilding American manufacturing and jobs.

With the average IQ dropping in the former United States on a predictable rate, more and more of the population is unemployable due to too low an intelligence to be marketable.

Also, much of our culture is increasing losing its work ethic as white men are being displaced by demographics that traditionally are not of the caliber required to be globally competititve.

AI will show up to work, every day, will work whenever the business is open, will stay late, and put in the level of detail and predictable repeatability that is being lost due to Boomers and X'ers aging out, and white men are being told to stay home, stay stoned and master video games.

I think that you might alsotalk to the men at the church you go to and the pastor Isn't there a group you go to? They can listen to you, pray with you, and perhaps they have some suggestions.

And some chucklehead will pull in within a stones throw of my campsite. I’m not anti-social, but I can’t for the life of me figure out why someone would do this. 4th of July Independence Day holiday maybe. And if it happened just once or something I could chalk it up to a fluke. It’s happened enough where it isn’t. Maybe someday I’ll get curious enough to ask “What the hell is wrong with you?”

I saw one of those stealthy camper vans parked in a weird spot on a morning hike, I didn’t bother them, turned around and walked the other way. To each his own, I guess.

I inspected the site later, after they were gone, and it looked like from the ground thwt maybe they were actually stuck. Or maybe an axle broke or something … happened. Oops.

Yes it is of course true humans are a social species, but the camping/outdoor/hiking thing is sort of the opposite. People want to get “away from it all”, even if they take half of it with them. Solitude.

An established campground doesn’t interest me too much. Too crowded, noisy, etc. So in the large national forests and federal lands, people ought to find their own spot, there is no reason I can think of to be within earshot or eyesight of anybody else (unless it’s super crowded or something).

As one with experience I’d say beware…. We escaped California 4 years ago after having been there 30 plus years. Yeah, in many ways (especially during covid) it was a shithole of a state. But you know what? Grass is not always greener….. I’m finding now that I really miss the ocean, the weather, the natural beauty… and 3 decades of memories. It’s been a mixed bag honestly. Make sure that you like where you’re going if you decide to go

She seemed like any other celebrity, only nicer. But now we're finding out that she was giving away huge amounts of money on the downlow, and asked people to keep it quiet, and in their gratitude, they did.

But she gave on an industrial scale. I thought Dollywood was just a vanity project, but apparently it was a jobs program disguised as entertainment that paid above-market wages with benefits. She didn't do it to make money, just to give people where she lived a source of income. That's beyond comprehension. Hopefully her example will inspire others to say "You know, I have enough, and I should help others," because that's how you really eliminate poverty.

Combine this with the Treasury's new push to revoke non-profit/charity status for political organizations and we really could see a new Golden Age.

184 Cancer Update: We met with the oncologist last week and there is more good news. While Mrs. Lloyd will need chemo, it will be for only 12 weeks and will use a mild medication at a low dose. She will have drug therapy for much longer, but it has few side effects as it is used to target a specific protein in the cancer. Amazing that they can do that now.

The reason for this is that a few stray cancer cells may have "escaped" and so we need to hunt them down to prevent a recurrence somewhere else. She will get a port, and treatment will commence when she is fully healed. She's doing well now, gaining strength and range of motion, but there is still some pain and she needs help doing just about everything.

The thing about gas prices is that they are based on what was paid for it when it was purchased, not the current price of oil, so there is always a lag, just like everything else. Once the high priced stuff is sold off, the cheaper stuff replaces it.

Of course when oil goes up, the prices do as well because they are going to have to buy more expensive oil and need that money up front. The same is true for just about every commodity, but no one pays attention to corn futures.

190 Well, the hits just keep coming. I had been home less than 2 hours from a 2 hour drive from Birmingham's UAB where Dr Funk had done the *HOLEP procedure. At 7:05 my doctor at the UAB clinic here in HSV called. The MRI he had me get Tuesday indicated a mass on my left kidney is most likely cancer, but it's small and now I have 3 of my doctors collaborating on it. I'm guessing it's another hospital visit in my near future.

I guess the good news is they caught it early.

The really good news is i no longer have a catheter!!

I think it's even money at this point that California is a red state, but simply awash in corrupt voting. Same for Oregon and Washington. As soon as the mail-in thing happened, as soon as they gave state IDs to everyone, the states veered left. This is why they are fighting so hard at any form of election accountability.

There's a renewed effort underway to end the conflict. The Vatican sent a new envoy (an American, btw) who openly said that there can be no winner at this point as both countries have bled themselves white. Pretty blunt language from the Vatican.

There has been a lot of progress in understanding cancer and the biggest eye-opener for me has been how normal it all is. It's about as dramatic as getting a tooth pulled. The scheduling is quick, the staff is attentive and professional. Very different from the E/R or some of the other clinics. I suppose it is somewhat self-selecting in that only the best can handle the complexity involved.

The obvious answer is to enjoy the weather. In Michigan we have months of cold, dark, depressing weather so it's pretty much expected that you prioritize being outside when you can. Every step explained with care even though you know they've done it a million times. My gynecologist who had nothing to do with my hip surgery spent close to an hour pulling up diagrams on the computer to explain everything and allay my fears. Told me she would see me anytime I needed her. There are good people in medicine, you just have to put in the work.

Is it your contention you would act differently if you ran a gas station? Maybe, I dunno. I suspect maybe they aren’t “greedy” but simply trying to stay in business. They might make 20c on a gallon of gasoline.

Look at the state taxes in California or Washington. It’s $2 or $3 per gallon. What did they do to get that shit all the way from Wyoming into your local Stop N Go underground tank? Not a damn thing, get right down to it.

Right, because future purchases are paid for with current sales. So if oil spikes the $70 per barrel oil won't pay for $120 per barrel that replaces it. When it retreats back to $70, the pumps are still full of $120 oil, so only when that is replaced can the prices go back down.

274 Got back from a nearly-two-week family vacation late last night. All eight of us drove down to California through the redwoods to Yosemite, spend four days there, then drove to Mammoth. My son and I hiked from Onion Valley to Whitney Portal while the rest did things around Mammoth. They saved Devil's Postpile for us. We were planning to camp a couple more nights on the way home, but the drive up 395 was so easy we just drove all the way back to Portland non-stop. Had a nice dinner in Eugene and got here about 11.

Then we discovered that the two cats (who were outside the whole time), had left flea eggs in the carpet, and the fleas were hopping everywhere. It's not that bad, and it's actually pretty fun to take a plate, let them hop onto your legs, then brush them on the plate and crunch them. But my wife feverishly vacuumed the whole two-story house before bed. We will get some flea bombs today and spend a while somewhere fun---maybe the gym we just joined.

I have tremendous thanksgiving, but please pray for my wife.

276 I got a bunch of really pretty blank notecards from some group I subscribe to. Audubon or Nature's Conservatory or something. The last time I gave a gift to one of my grandkids, I wrote a short personal note. My son made a point of telling me how much my granddaughter liked it. When my birthday rolled around, they gave me a shell and a little heart in tiny bags they made.
This means so much more than a preprinted card or an expensive gift because there is thought behind it. Emotion.
