Mom’s old Cocker Spaniel loves to watch her cook, so Mom puts her on the seat at the island. She usually gets a treat as a bonus. When Mom finished, she left Birdy in the chair. Later, she heard snoring. Birdy sleeps a lot.

3 Tree lizards
1 Fledgling bird, rescued and returned to outside
8 geckos. This includes 2 this week- one she brought into the bedroom in the middle of the night Tuesday and one he found in the living room early yesteday morning.

Because he cannot hear her when asleep, I got up and put a cup over the remains, slid a piece of cardboard underneath and removed it to the kitchen floor near the back door. Then, I thought better of it and took it outside to the porch. Because I'm a swell person.

6 Publius and I kept going out onto the front porch to check out the lunar eclipse the other night, and Sammy joined us for some non-Bunny time (Bunny is a tiresome bossypants who's laid claim to the back porch, and he tries to avoid her).

Old Sammy was extremely affectionate. He's a Void who appears silently out of nowhere, and he normally retains his dignity.

7 Veiled Chameleons have an interesting appearance. I have friends who invite geckos into their lives to eat black widow spiders. Don't know about Chameleons in this regard.

We have a designated mouse catcher (a microwave cover with a one foot square of cardboard). It used to come into use fairly often, but since there's little hunting going on (Purry is afraid to go out into the wild since the Incident).

The longest road trip we had when we moved from Illinois to South Carolina. We had two Great Danes and two teacup Chichahuas.

The little darlngs were no problem.

We had issues when we had to let the Danes out, on a leash to do their business.

Why do we have so many pussies in our country that are skeered of dogs?

25 Afternoon, pet folken,

This happened last Monday, but I've mentioned it on the blog this week. Monday I took big Stirling in for his rabies shot and a basic checkup. He's fine, except! He's *15.5* pounds! This on a cat who ought to be 13.5 to 14 at the outside, says the vet. This marks a near-record among my cats. Only big red Arizona the (unlikely) part-Coon topped that, at 16, which was 2 lbs. over his proper weight.

So, like AZ before him, Stirling is on a diet. Less IAMS dry food, no dry food in a bowl overnight, a little more exercise . . . and most important, vigilance by yours truly to make sure he doesn't gobble up what Dagny leaves temporarily of her own meals. I stand watch, and when she walks off from her bowl, I scoop it up and put it out of Stirling's view and reach. She will get it back when she wants it.

Of course he is pretending to be gaunt and haggard, just rescued from a kitty concentration camp, etc. Not fooling anybody, cat!

When I was growing up, one of my neighbors had a Great Dane. It had a loud, menacing, bark and would charge at you, and then.....stop inches from you, step on your foot and you had to pet him. Once satisfied, he'd release your foot and wander off.

Neighbor lady is all of 5'3". She has an Irish Wolfhound. Beautiful dog but she doesn't walk it anymore. She gets dragged along when it sees someone and takes off to get ears rubbed .

Sea otters and seals will jump on boats in Resurrection Bay (Seward, AK) when orcas come around. It is sometimes hilarious.

Also, sea otter moms park their babies on the back decks of boats in the harbor while they go collect food. They used to tangle the babies in seaweed, and that usually protected them, but then they discovered boat decks and so many of them do that now it is just amazing.

36 If you look carefully around the tree limbs where they roost, often find "owl pellets". They regurgitate their food, after digesting all the good stuff. They look like... well, furry turds. The hair of mice and other food sources isn't very digestible, nor are the bones, so they are sort of little markers on what the Barred Owls are having for dinner.

39 Clever cats? My late Marie-Antoinette loved going for walks on a harness and lead, and knew her name even if someone on TV said it. Tatiana the Wonder Siberian would race after her little soft ball and carry it in her jaws back to me to throw again, and would open drawers to get to her toys. And I've occasionally got up in the morning to find the TV on -- one of the current furry monsters has stepped on the power button of the remote. I put it out of their way now.

40 Dagny La Siberienne is, like her adopted brother, just over four years old, and she has been growing and filling out. Her dark gray fur is more shot through with visible tan or "amber" -- her inheritance from her red tabby sire -- and her coat is soft and fine.

Siberians are supposed to take five years to mature completely. It'll be interesting to compare her appearance next March, her fifth birthday, with what she looked like when I adopted her in Sept. '22.

42 Favorite Irish Wolfhound story. There were a pair that lived down the street from me. One day, I was walking Duncan and the owner's van came to a stop. She asked "I don't suppose you've seen them?"

I told her I had not but since I had Duncan with me, the odds were good that they would come over to say hello.

Ran into her a little later. Both dogs were in the car, smiling in delight and covered in mud. They had gone to say hello to a neighbor and then discovered this great mud puddle. She was taking them to get bathed and both dogs had a look that said "I regret nothing."

Except for my first twelve years on Earth, 1981-83 in an apartment that did not allow pets, and three months between the passing of Chekov D. Siberian and the adoption of Stirling, I've had at least one cat and occasionally two. Almost 80% of my life. Wow.
