When government finishes something - even in California!

There have been some raised eyebrows and a lot of commentary over a statement by Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman about finishing a recent infrastructure project:

Meanwhile, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass orders cops to stop cracking down on illegal street vendors. To me, this invites a comparison to Mayor Mamdani in New York being sued by "multicultural" bodega owners for his plan to drive them out of business by opening government-subsidized grocery stores.

And Adam Carolla points out that:

Once cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles do this—once you essentially look the other way for the homeless, junkies, illegal immigrants, criminals, or whoever it is, while shining a spotlight on taxpayers with over-regulation, over-permitting, and trying to manage every grain of their lives, versus saying to illegal immigrants, ‘Go do whatever you want,’ or to the homeless, ‘Go shoot up wherever you want or sleep wherever you want’—then you’ve lost it. L.A.’s there. San Francisco’s there.

Sleep wherever you want and don't worry about setting fires . . .

How's that high-speed rail coming along?

Yesterday we drove over a fancy new overpass which is intended to allow cars and trucks to easily make their way over the future high-speed rail tracks. It looks a lot like a smaller version of a similar overpass over a highway a few miles to the north.

Traffic crossing the nearby existing freight and Amtrak rails must still stop the old-fashioned way. The new overpass does not look particularly safe for pedestrians or bicyclists. Perhaps some new local bus routes between neighborhoods and country towns are planned for the future.

Some neighborhoods no longer exist, having fallen victim to eminent domain.

There won't be a high-speed train station nearby. So the promise of "local jobs" was kinda temporary.

The pretty new overpass does keep people from getting lost like they did for months on the previous very confusing detours which changed periodically. And some cars fell into ditches during the many months of detours and degraded roads, as well. So, in one small part of the future high-speed rail route, some progress has apparently been made.

I wouldn't be surprised if traffic over the newly finished infrastructure is restricted when work on the rails begins. If it does.

This is not too far to the south of the pretty new overpass:

Well. This seems rather late in the game to be changing the route on the already truncated high-speed rail line. See more details at the link.

As an added bonus, given the state’s “housing shortage,” it’s going to be very hard to make Lennar homes a villain in this story.

20 We moved from West Virginia to California in 2000. Probably the biggest culture shock you can imagine. Left it in 2013.

The weather and scenery is nice. We lived for a while in Mountain View, them relocated to the Monterey area. The people, generally speaking, are dicks. Not laid back at all. At least not where we were. Lots of busy bodies who want to get all up in your biz... tell you what you should be doing, etc.

Left the place in 2013 and relocated to rural Kentucky. Weather can be a pain in the ass, but the scenery is pretty nice. And we're left alone.

I have the squeeze bottle version that I use when I have a cold or congestion or after mowing the yard. I would use it more often but there is some (probably small but non-zero) risk of pushing bacteria up your nose if you use tap water instead of distilled and frankly it's just too much trouble.

As they evolve they become less effective, and, less effcient. And, like a living organism, they develop self-protective mechanisms.

Some of you may have noted my comments in the last year or so regarding the flood destruction of the Veteran's Restoration Quarters here in Asheville. The subsequent interactions with FEMA, HUD, and local authorities in trying to reconstruct the physical facility have been real eye-openers.

Last week we held the ground-breaking for the rebuilding. Get this...we could not hold a simple photo-op of shoveling a little dirt until we had FEMA-approved dirt. They would not allow that until certified archeological and environmental studies had been submitted. We had to bring in a pickup truck load of outside dirt, just to take a token photo. And, that dirt had to be certified also.

Oregon wants to raise our gas taxes so they can "fix the roads". We already have some the highest gasoline taxes in the nation and their current purpose is to "fix the roads". There are a lot of other states with significantly lower gas taxes and also significantly better roads. So the question for Tina Kotek (the worst governor in the history of all that is terrible): Where is the current gas tax money really being spent?

I have been unable to get a clear answer to a very simple question: what percentage of the population is conscienceless? Even setting aside the interesting question of whether it varies by subpopulation. I couldn't even get any precision on the incidence of Cluster B personality disorders, which could be considered a proper subset, so at least it would give a floor. And frankly, I find it telling.

It's such an obvious question, it should be very well studied. For it to be so studiously ignored is rather suspicious -- especially since it's what you might expect to happen if psychology, sociology, and related fields all got taken over by the conscienceless themselves.

I ended up settling on 6% or 1 in 17 as a working guesstimate. But it could be a third or triple that for all I know.

Voluminous studies have been performed on the general characteristics and behaviors best calculated to have a happy and successful life. Financially, and the rest of it. Rational people believe compassion for others also involves raising individuals so they are healthy and well adjusted, and not wilting flower basket cases in need of "government assistance" in the first place. It's really tough to make valid comparisons over time, especially when using official government inflation figures over 150 years.

In terms of gold at current prices, the figures listed would be maybe $12 to 20 billions in the current vapor-ware or confetti-bucks. The truth is probably somewhere in between.

I think it depends in part on the definition. The percentage of people who think it's not really stealing if you steal from a big, evil corporation is > 50%. The percentage of Ted Bundys out there is < 0.01%. As far as people who are just I'm important and you're not, I'd guess 10 - 15%.

I suspect there are quite a few people who are much like myself; I feel no innate desire to be “good” of my own; but my religious beliefs hold that there is indeed a God, and that He has clearly directed us how we should live and treat our fellows here on Earth. So I strive to keep my actions in line with His rules.

If I had no beliefs I would find the Nietzchean view of things the most logical; the strong rule the weak because they can. With no Lawgiver, why not?

Yeah, the truly high denomination bills were never made illegal, but they are removed from circulation when banks receive them in circulation starting in the late 1960s. They have a collector value now that exceeds their face value by quite a bit. A $500 bill in good condition might sell for 650 or whatever, that kind of thing.

I think a modern $5k bill makes sense these days, when buying a used car, say. In 1969 that was serious money, sure, but. I know farmers think nothing about spending thousands and thousands on tractors and combines and stuff. That old goofy looking feller in overalls might be fricking loaded, let me tell ya.

131 After decades, they don't even have a real plan of where to put the High Speed rails, nor the stations.

I live near Merced CA, on one end of what is now the 'plan'... and yet Merced does not even know where the Station is supposed to go... which means no Environmental report could be done... nor can the city plan where to put other infrastructure ... like a Highway that will need to be crossed...
