The X Safety team conducted an investigation into suspected Chinese inauthentic accounts involved in influence operations: We identified a bot farm of approximately 200,000 accounts. Within this farm, we found 200 accounts posting in a manner that could manipulate a legitimate debate about American AI and energy policy. These posts contained claims that AI data centers are driving up household electricity prices and straining the grid. Others included AI-generated cartoons that depicted data-center operators enriching themselves at the public's expense. We remain committed to maintaining an open and authentic platform where people debate topics of public interest. We take seriously any attempts to undermine the integrity of the global town square and suspend accounts that violate our Authenticity policy.

Diana Larrazabal, who owns flower and gift shop Aroma D' Angel at 304 E. 116th St., said shops including hers in recent months have received a slew of citations from the New York City Department of Sanitation for garbage that isn't even theirs. Her flower and gift shop was dinged with fines three times this year -- most recently for $350 in May. Many of her Spanish-speaking neighbors who are not bilingual lean on her to help them navigate the city's red tape, she said, adding that they also are forking over hundreds of dollars in fines.
"It's definitely more frequent," Larrazabal said at a Wednesday press conference held by the Multicultural Business Coalition -- which sued the mayor and the city on Monday over the city-owned supermarket strategy over fears it will pose unfair competition to their stores. The coalition's chairman, Frank Garcia, says the fines ramped up about two weeks ago when the group began pounding the pavement to speak with local business owners to get support for its suit.
"When we started going door to door two weeks ago, that's when the fines started," Garcia told The Post, saying some have been served with penalties as stiff as $1,000. "The owners don't speak English."

There is no datacenter bubble. Compute and storage is moving out of the endpoints and into datacenters and that's not going to stop. Companies aren't building out on-prem server farms anymore because it's expensive, it doesn't scale, and you are forever on the obsolescence treadmill of replacing hardware.
AI/LLMs are also here to stay. Overhyped? Maybe, but also not going anywhere anytime soon. The upshot is that Claude is replacing the H1B asshats and Indian code farms that crank out crap. There are far too many efficiencies to be gained by the correct and competent use of AI, especially Agentic AI, for companies to look back now.
I do think that we should not let building datacenters be the wild west, which it sort of is right now. It would be prudent for us to slow our roll and take a breath.

Data centers are an important issue to the average voter across party lines, regardless of what should be done to minimize impact on communities and natl security. It seems likely it will be a deciding factor, along w gas prices, in the upcoming election. However, I don’t really hear much positioning from politicians about it in ads, mostly just about Medicare cuts (in Ohio at least).

At the end of the day, the inputs to the tech are compute power and math. There's no way you can close off the knowledge about AI. If you try to create a closed system an open one will always form - info wants to be free. Yes, the CCP want a very closed system, but they can't censor all knowledge. Heck, the Dems tried in the US and Musk and his allies are doing all they can to open it up. Besides, if data centers go into space, then this whole controversy becomes moot.
It's a bit of a ramble, but I just want to be convinced that the AI arms race we're worried about is really something we should worry about.

I can still be tracked by geofencing based on which cell towers it pings, but that is unavoidable if the phone is to work at all. It's not spying for the sake of spying.

The centers are being pushed by datacenter builders who want to suck up investment while it's available. They'll get paid and leave the investors holding the bag if no tenant can be found.
It's a mad rush of "build it and they will come." It's a very risky strategy that will surely end up with empty multi-billion centers.
Sorta like all those yuge malls that were build before they had tenants.

I am thinking about this line of argument some more. One thing that AI would (or should, in theory) be able to do is program in whatever language quantum hardware would work in. If the world's computer scientists have worked in the binary (or hex?) system for decades, there probably aren't more than a handful of humans on earth that can even conceive or work within the constraints of a quantum programming environment. You'd probably need a computer to program another computer.

Its a mistake to think that they are only about AI (they have existed for decades, before the rise of artificial "intelligence"). They are about data storage as well, especially videos. The internet is huge and keeps getting more gigantic every second. All that has to be stored somewhere. Processed somewhere.
I am not convinced that AI is an arms race or has any similarity to previous conflicts or struggles. If someone comes up with a really great AI, its literally not possible to keep it to yourself. Anything major anyone comes up with in computer tech ends up global no matter what rules or laws are in place or how careful someone is, because of its very nature.

Within minutes (seconds?) the country that has functional AI and quantum computing could pretty much infiltrate, poison, and destroy any country's economy and probably defense...maybe isolated nuclear subs might be immune from take-over if receiving...well, just about nothing.

Power generation offsite like fossil fuel plants, nuclear, etc. requires massive cooling towers so most if not all are located by rivers and the water from those rivers goes into the atmosphere as water vapor. Back in the water wars between Georgia, Florida, and Alabama, the battle over that river water included the problem that the largest leak in the water ecosystem stemmed from water vapor being evaporated in those cooling towers. Crop irrigation, drinking and septic uses of water, were largely dealt with by water treatment and recharging native aquifers. Not so for cooling tower evaporation.
So if the datacenter uses gobs of electricity or evaporation towers for any heat transference, then they are 'using' water that would not be otherwise used.

My two biggest problems with people who attack data centers is that they are largely either lies or shockingly ignorant... and that they are missing the problem.
1) water is not destroyed by power plants, they use it, some even recycle the water they take in over and over. The water is not polluted or blighted by being used to cool tech. They cannot be built in super remote place like antarctica because they need the water and power to run.
2) we need more power plants. Complaining that data centers take up too much energy is accurate, but miguided; that means we have too little energy for the demand, not that data centers are evil.
Thankfully this will solve its self: just like how all these silicon valley guys dumped climate change the instant they realized it would limit their development, they will push for power plants and have the clout to make it happen.

I’m not so sure quantum computing would be such a huge threat. Yes it’d be powerful; yes, today’s internet would be vulnerable. But… we know that symmetric encryption would be secure against quantum computing and we have runway to adopt. An actual deployable quantum computer is not something on the near term horizon. In 15 years maybe… the world will have time to get ready. Quantum computing and AI are two different domains

I work for a company that is putting quite a bit of money and R&D hours into post-quantum cryptography. This is a company you've definitely heard of before and it's been around since the beginning of the internet. People who know, know that quantum isn't bullshit. A lot of the stuff on the periphery of it is, though.

Eh, I have seen a couple of stories where people have done so but simply most people don't have a need for it.
The AI hardware models nowadays are basically GPU derived and are not designed for ordinary hardware or tasks that they might run. Overkill in some facets, incapable in others.

Eh, I have seen a couple of stories where people have done so but simply most people don't have a need for it.
The AI hardware models nowadays are basically GPU derived and are not designed for ordinary hardware or tasks that they might run. Overkill in some facets, incapable in others.

The City run grocery store is going to be entertainment at its finest. I'll predict that the first thing that will happen is that private store owners across the city are going to dominate the client base. They are going to purchase everything they possibly can and clean off the shelves, then return to their own store, mark up the price, and sell it for profit. It will cut out the supplier (who will make a lot of noise)...and eventually they will put limits on total purchases (or better yet, weekly alottments). Essentially, the city will be in control of your grocery purchasing power.
Next, private store owner customers will have relatives, acquaintances, employees and strangers purchasing off the shelf from the City run store, with the same result. This is going to be a hoot.

Flock Cameras are just one more in a long, long line of abuses of power and liberty that law enforcement engages in until stopped because it makes their job easier. Now, I don't blame them for wanting to do so, I do so with my work too: I use anything new I can to make my job easier.

Three things to consider (I am in the same kind of boat).
1) As we age, our abilities diminish. We cannot do what we once did, we lose our sharp focus, our energy, and our tolerance for hardship and strain. Its a natural part of life on this earth, as evil as it is.
2) This does not mean you are falling into dementia or alzheimer's. I just lost my mom a few year ago to dementia and was her primary caretaker for the last two years. I live with that horror and worry about it too, but it is not abnormal to be less able and forget more as we age.
3) You sound like someone who needs to take a break. Not just a vacation but regularly. If you are not, take at least one day off a week: no work. NO WORK. don't think about it, don't do just a little, don't just set things up. Just take that day off, and do only the minimum you need to survive and care for your family.

Toll booths/highway scanners are situational.
Flock is omnipresent and builds a heatmap of your movements over time. Toll cameras don't create a dossier on every person driving through them the way Flock cameras do.
