John Ratcliffe's Secret Mission to Moscow: Don't Attack NATO, and You Had Better Strike a Deal While a Deal Is Still Possible, Mr. Putin

Ratcliffe told the head of the FSB that Russia must not attack NATO.

Is that a real fear? Yes, for several reason. First, intelligence warned of an attack on Poland by Russia, with Russia hoping to make Poland back away from its support of Ukraine.

And then months after that, a Russian missile fell in Poland. The missile hit an empty field and killed no one, but it seems likely that it was intended as a threat, especially since it had been predicted by intel sources.

And now their are fresh reports that Russia is planning another provocation attack.

Second: Russia is losing this war and one of the most basic reactions to losing on one front is to open another front. The CIA seems to fear that Putin will become desperate and escalate the situation to delay his defeat.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe's personal visit to Moscow this week saw him warn Russia against any strikes on NATO nations, multiple outlets have reported.

Ratcliffe visited Russia this week and met with intelligence officials, but not President Vladimir Putin. The meeting came amid reported concerns from Washington that Russia could attack one of the Baltic States, all of which are in NATO, according to the Wall Street Journal.

That wasn't the only point of the trip.

The other objective was to deliver the CIA's assessment that, despite the US previously figuring that Russia would eventually win the war due to their great advantage in population and war materiel, the CIA now believes that Russia will lose the war, given the disastrous 2026 Russian spring and summer offensives, which are hardly worthy of the name.

Ratcliffe urged Russia to start seriously negotiating for a peace deal before Russia suffers military and economic damage that could take generations to repair.

For those of you who have, like me, been reading about the Ukraine-Russia war, and wondered if the news of Russia's bloody failure was just Ukrainian propaganda: It appears not. The CIA broadly confirms what we've been hearing from Ukrainian sources and independent analysts.

C.I.A. Chief Delivered Bleak Assessment of Russia's War in Secretive Moscow Visit

John Ratcliffe, the C.I.A. director, made a secretive visit to Moscow this week to privately share his bleak assessment of the state of the Russian war against Ukraine, and to urge the Russians to cut a deal before their military and economic situation gets worse, current and former officials said.

Mr. Ratcliffe delivered the message to Aleksandr V. Bortnikov, the head of Russia's F.S.B. intelligence service, and made no threats about potential consequences for the Russian side should President Vladimir V. Putin ignore the C.I.A. director's assessment and choose to continue fighting.

C.I.A. analysts have long questioned whether Mr. Putin's advisers have given him honest assessments of the war's trajectory and toll.

This is discussed a lot -- Putin is almost like Hitler in seeming to believe that he's winning this. People attribute this to the fact that generals and staffers who give Putin bad news tend to exit tall buildings from high windows.

The C.I.A. has long maintained communications channels with the F.S.B. and Russia's foreign intelligence service, which is known as the S.V.R.

Officials said Mr. Ratcliffe's intelligence channel with Bortnikov runs parallel to separate channels that President Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law, have established with other senior advisers to Mr. Putin.

Some officials said they hoped that Mr. Putin, a former intelligence officer himself, would see a message from the C.I.A. director as more urgent and credible than communications through normal diplomatic channels.

For much of last year, Mr. Trump and some of his top advisers appeared to hold the belief that a Russian battlefield victory over Ukraine was inevitable because of Russia's larger population and its nuclear arsenal.

But the Russians have suffered massive losses, and their battlefield gains have stalled.

It is not clear whether Mr. Ratcliffe's message presaged any change in U.S. policy toward Russia or Ukraine.

Mr. Ratcliffe's visit was the latest effort by the Trump administration to breathe new life into stalled negotiations. It has become increasingly clear that Ukraine is not going to give up its fight in the east, even with reduced U.S. military support.

Given what he presented as the bleak military and economic reality for Russia, Mr. Ratcliffe told Mr. Bortnikov that he believed it was time for Moscow to engage in serious negotiations to end the war.

Since Mr. Trump's return to office, the United States has scaled back its military support to the Ukrainians, forcing them to rely more heavily on European partners.

...

Last month, Mr. Ratcliffe spoke out pointedly about Russian troop losses during the war, and Moscow's inability to advance on the battlefield. He noted that the life expectancy of a Russian soldier on the front lines was less than 35 minutes.

And he added that Russia had gained only about 1 percent of Ukraine's total territory in the 18 months since he became C.I.A. director, a development he attributed to Ukraine's "mastery" of drone technology.

Ukraine is parlaying that drone mastery into more aid. They're striking deals with many countries, including the US, and trading their hard-won expertise at drone warfare and technology for additional weapons (including more drones and components for drones).

Drones have replaced artillery as the new king of the battlefield. They're the weapon responsible for the most battle deaths, knocking artillery off its long-held bloody throne.

The future of warfare will be, for good or for ill, all about drones and, crucially, anti-drone technology. (Not all counter-drone weapons are so high tech.)

America must be able to destroy drones if we want to keep our other advantages. (And the Ukraine war has shown that US weapons systems are very good and much better than Russian, and presumably Chinese, systems. In fact, most of NATO's weapons are superior to Russia's.)

US drone "mothership" carries other drones.

Related: Trump announced the US had cleared the sea lanes of Strait of America of all Iranian mines.

Among the weapons deployed to destroy the mines? Underwater drones.

US officials had confirmed the essential claim two days earlier. They said underwater drones had identified more than 100 suspected mines in recent months.

Private contractors then disposed of the devices, the officials said. President Donald Trump warned that American forces would destroy any Iranian vessel caught laying new mines.

Also in the fight: the surface sea drone, the Corsair:

On July 12, 2026, three Saronic Corsair one-way attack uncrewed surface vessels struck a submarine and a ship maintenance facility at Iran's Bandar Abbas Naval Base, in what U.S. Central Command described as the first American combat employment of sea drones.

The strike settled a question this profile left open in June, when the Corsair's offensive role existed in acquisition documents and company material with no combat instance behind it. It settled much less about the platform. The approach was reported as low-speed and uncontested, the launch point, transit distance and warhead were never disclosed, and the released video ends at the explosions.

Thirty-four days earlier the same vessel class had recovered two downed Army aviators near the Strait of Hormuz. Behind both events sits a company that has since selected Brownsville, Texas for a shipyard costing more than $3 billion, launched its first 52-foot Mirage, and carries a $9.25 billion valuation against roughly $200 million in estimated 2025 revenue.

31 The big problem is the EU. They are doing everything they can to keep this conflict active. Recently, Zelenskyy was in the UK trying to work out a deal to create a major manufacturing factory in the UK to produce the Ukaine's drones. EU personnel are providing more direct assistance to Ukraine (via undisclosed personnel) that they should be. And, everytime the US makes a move to settle the conflict, the EU does something contrary to the goal.

The bottom line for the EU is they want escalation that requires US direct involvement, because that fills their treasure chests. They tried to lure us in previously by offering up peace troops, with the caveat that the US serve as an "insurance policy" and jump it if something occurs....which they would have been happy to covertly facilitate deceitfully. Trump didn't fall for that.

If you were in Russia and saw a nuclear-warhead capable missile coming your way, what are you supposed to do? Let it land and then sift through the smoke and ruins to determine if the war has escalated?

The Islamo-fascist UK needs to be cut loose from NATO since they have demonstrated that they no longer want to be part of civilized society.

45 Interesting position Trump is in. He knows, and so does Putin, that not only was the Russia hoax completely fake and largely generated with fake information from Ukraine, the reason Russia invaded Ukraine was because the Obama/Biden administration including the CIA and others, ran a coup in Ukraine in 2014 and took down an elected government friendly to Russia.

Interesting place to negotiate from. Trump and Putin both know what really happened but exposing it to the world has implications for both and not good ones for the US. Good for Trump, not so good for the US on the world stage.

49 >>>38 Anti-drone tech seems like it's going to be very difficult. I hope they figure it out, because those little bastards are like mosquitoes. Carpet bombing might have to make a comeback.

They have a gun with a computerized fire control that estimates where a drone will be by the time the bullet gets to it, and locks the trigger until it calculates the gun is aimed at the right place.

I don't know how effective that is.

I'm happily impressed at how well American war tech seems to be working so I'm hopeful we will figure this out.

Directed energy weapons are part of this. They just jam drones' communications and guidance. But AI is the answer to this, as an AI drone doesn't rely on communications with its operator and also doesn't need GPS guidance. They can fly by scanning the ground.

but also they'll probably be putting money into laser-trucks.

I also believe that we have now settled into a sustainable low cost, low risk tactical posture that can crack Iran without much kinetic effort on our part. Most wars start off with bad battle plans that don't survive first contact with the enemy - the key to victory is adapting and improvising as it develops.

It’s pretty clear for whatever reason you feel a need to advance at least part of Putin’s sophism. But the fact is this is Putin’s war of choice. He started it and used NATO as a pretext to do it. He also thought, as Ace noted this would be over quickly. But the fact is Putin has single handily changed the face of warfare, and not to his advantage. He proved you no longer need to be a near peer actor to not just stay in the battle, but to win a war by virtue of perseverance. Ukraine is wrecking Russia’s economy and destroying what is otherwise a great country for his ego. He no longer has NATO to use as his pretext, and his casual belli is essentially gone. The Russian people see it. His top tier military leaders see it, and they’re also not very fond of what looks like subservience to the Chinese. This all has the danger of spiraling out of control, which is why the agency thinks he may make a desperate move.

Ya know, that's one of the things that started breaking down my disbelief.

I outsmarted myself. I had been a Catholic. I had cited how abortion would result in a "decline of the value of life". And then I got "sophisticated". There didn't seem to be a irrefutable (that matters as an "atheist") interaction there.

But after it got to a certain point, I realized that I had "predicted" the decline in valuing human life much better as a Catholic, than as a non-believer.

Some folks here pretty early on decided to side with one or the other in that contest. To me, it is more like Iran-Iraq war, a pity that both could not lose which ironically is pretty much on point. Ukraine cannot win in a conventional contest like retaking its territory by defeating russians and moving its troops into the occupied regions.

Russia appears increasingly unable to win either--it has meager territorial gains while hollowing out and destroying its economy to the point that it is far more at risk from the Chicoms moving into a vacuum in the East.

Territory means nothing, to win, you destroy armies and Russia failed to do that because from the beginning it was a political op like Putin used in Georgia with Abkhazia, taking the Crimea, Chechniya, etc. A modified Brezhnev doctrine dealing with ethnic Russians rather than communism.

Germany took Alsace and Lorraine after the Franco Prussian War which did little to help them win WWI either. Simply served as a continuing irritant to the French and caused the French to build up its military again which led to the stupid von Schiefflen plan.

We're here now, and this is probably not a nadir.

Russia is sitting exactly where they were sitting a year ago, in most of the energy rich east. And Ukraine is unable to gain any territory to speak of.

And it is not just Ukraine. A lot of their weapons enabling them to continue the fight came from massive transfers from the West. And sufficient ability to standoff initial Russian superior numbers and technology.

Nope. The Germans nearly unleashed forces over Morocco twice. TR won the Nobel Peace Prize for the first at the Algiciras Conference. The second time was in 1911 over the Panther gunship and Morocco which was under French 'protection'. French ceded some territory further south in Africa to resolve it.

The Germans were to blame for WWI because Bismarck's entire career was spent trying to keep the French and the Russians apart. And indeed both were strange bedfellows. But the von Schiefflen plan explicitly required violating Belgium neutrality from the get go and that violated a treaty post Napoleon forbidding Germany from doing that.

Most people focus on WWI in 1914 but the whole saga began in the Napoleonic wars and the Congress of Vienna period after.

It wasn't half-hearted. That expedition of like 150,000 was fitting out with plans to proceed when the Russo-Finnish war ended. So something changed between 1939 with Poland and 1940 with Finland.

210 If Ukraine were winning on the military front, why did they expand things? Most likely as the territory changes reflect, they continue to slowly lose.

Russia isn't in much of a position to add new fronts. Nor is Putin's position as fragile as has been claimed since the start of this war. There is a tendency to read Russia in western election cycle terms which is not really how they work.

Socialism. As I understand it, as soon as an Indian company hires its 100th employee, it becomes nearly impossible to fire any of them -- and the employees know it. So, Indians in India are (effectively) statutorily forbidden from growing even medium-size companies, let alone large ones. And they're also too commietarded to revoke the law that "everyone knows" has hard-broken their economy.

Further, it's a safe bet that if they go somewhere with a better economy and get enough political power to make public policy, then they will put the same idiotic law in place there. They will break the economy there, for the same reason they have not fixed it at home: because it's their nature. They can't help it.

Self-destruction is just irresistibly appealing to simpletons who cannot perceive 2nd-order effects.

It's a royalty issue. The original recordings are owned in part by the record companies, so any streaming of those is shared with the company. The per-song streaming royalties isn't enough to justify the band sharing them, at least in their view.

Streaming of newly or re-recorded versions of the songs isn't shared, so that's what's available.

Def Leppard had the same issue for a long time.

They backed down anyway after losing the diplomatic battle because they weren't willing to unleash a war they would have won. Russia has long been ruled by something approximating an autocrat and a military aristocracy. When the autocrat is weak, the military deposes him and places in another. But that has historically had very little to do with their economy. While there are many instances of weak-willed leaders in Russia being replaced with more authoritarian ones, it was never driven by the economy.

239 Hunter Biden's investment company was invested in a company called Metabiota. Their business was to track the spread of virus around the world. They were very active in Ukraine on government contracts because that's where we had a shitload of biolabs. Not a conspiracy theory, confirmed by none other than Victoria Nuland in testimony to Congress.

Metabiota was also busy tracking viruses in China. Largely because once again they were getting contracts from USAID which is just another way of saying the CIA.

Again, not a conspiracy theory. Fact.

They likely would have been busy in Kazakstan where we were also building a huge biolab had Putin not stepped in and stopped it claiming he was going to allow anymore "color revolutions", he said it plainly, on his border.

Merely showing up eliminates the dead, illegals and the double dippers.

Putin doesn't appear to think that way from his public statements. And that is a problem when we analyze him--to him, it is his task to protect Russians everywhere and to restore Russia to great power status.

So he chose to go to war over Ukraine attacking marginally economically useful territories in the Donbas and retaking the mostly Russian Crimea (the entire cession to the supposed SSR Ukraine in 1954 by the USSR was to the Politburo, merely a paper thing).

Perhaps. Putin thought he would be able to decapitate the regime quickly and force a pro Russian peace. He failed. And the remainder of this war is due to climbing the tiger's back, you don't get off or risk being eaten. Zelinsky is in a similar war for his own survival.

Likewise, when I see a drone chasing soldiers in the open, would popping off a big smoke canister protect the soldiers from a direct hit from an FPV drone grenade?

We knew for years that a further eastward expansion of NATO toward Russia was going to result in war. Not only did Putin clearly state it, he gave us a test run in Georgia.

Well, that is whether April Glaspie, ambassador to Iraq understood that Saddam aimed at taking the Kuwaitis out. At the time, GHWB was preoccupied with the dying Soviet Union. You can dig up her wiki page which is ambiguous depending on which source you believe on transcription.

One has, "But we have no opinion on the Arab-Arab conflicts, like your border disagreement with Kuwait. I was in the American Embassy in Kuwait during the late 1960s. The instruction we had during this period was that we should express no opinion on this issue and that the issue is not associated with America. James Baker has directed our official spokesmen to emphasize this instruction. We hope you can solve this problem using any suitable methods via Klibi (Chedli Klibi, Secretary General of the Arab League) or via President Mubarak. All that we hope is that these issues are solved quickly." Continued,

"One version of the transcript has Glaspie saying:

We can see that you have deployed massive numbers of troops in the south. Normally that would be none of our business, but when this happens in the context of your threats against Kuwait, then it would be reasonable for us to be concerned. For this reason, I have received an instruction to ask you, in the spirit of friendship — not confrontation — regarding your intentions: Why are your troops massed so very close to Kuwait's borders?

Later the transcript has Glaspie saying:[citation needed]

We have no opinion on your Arab-Arab conflicts, such as your dispute with Kuwait. Secretary Baker has directed me to emphasize the instruction, first given to Iraq in the 1960s, that the Kuwait issue is not associated with America.

I mean the same people tried to run a coup against our own president and then rigged an election to keep out of office, tried to throw him in prison and then best case looked the other way when nut bags they likely radicalized tried to murder him.
