Not much pain & he's had a few tears fixed in the past with a stem cell injection. No limp, either, thankfully. He may or may not need endoscopic surgery. The result of long distance running for 40yrs.
He found on AI that being a geezer (his words) they may not bother since other muscles are compensating. A rare advantage of being old (altho neither of us look it or act it). It gave me hope.
Spent all morning on the phone getting the MRI sent to the university and top doc's team. Who, I found out, does not operate often on people over 50yrs. However they will find someone. Meanwhile I found two others if we need another opinion. Then I quit and focused on nothing.
Things are looking up.
We may need your prayers in the future, please, as he's only had one tiny surgery in his life (cut thumb tendon, the guitar picking thumb that is fine, one Easter dinner).
So we wait. I'm waiting. Probably won't know squat til next week. Got the MRI faxed & referral letter faxed to "the team."

On the exoplanet front, they've found another wild one, GJ 523b. This is a "mega-earth", even more massive than a super-earth. It's about 23 earth masses and 2.5 earth radii (which would translate to a surface gravity of 3.7 g).
It's orbiting a mid-K star, GJ 523, about 87 light years away.
This is an outlier oddball. Very dense, but large radius.

Nah. I ain't no nag.
I might break the ice and interject that it was too much sex with the university crew to flip my husband right out. heh.
He ran too far for too long. Was known as an "elite" runner in his prime. 4min miles, which girls are breaking now in HS. To run that fast for many miles is now taking its toll.
I hate running. He hates swimming. Guess what he might have to do in rehab either way? I told him to swim when we had a pool in FL, "but he didn't like it."
Well, here we are now with me limber and him falling apart.
I love him madly and someone is going to fix him if he needs it (the lady on the phone realized this about the over 50yrs comment for King Doctor of Ortho).
I have my ways...

She wanted us to go to the New Year's Eve show at the Earl of Old Town, so one day when we were out buying Christmas gifts, we stopped by the bar to buy tickets. There was nobody in the bar but the bartender and some guy up on stage, a short young fellow, dressed in raggedy blue jeans and a big smile, strumming on a beat-up old guitar.
As we stood there, he burst out with a familiar train song. We listened a while, then headed out to shop more.
I turned to her and exclaimed, that was a great version of that song! She replied, it ought to be, that was the guy who wrote it. I said, you mean we just walked out of a private performance with the guy we just bought tickets to see on New Year's?!? Yup. We should have just gone back in.
But we caught his show that New Year's, and the second set, and many New Year's shows subsequently. Great songwriter, energetic performer, and a great guy. Gone 'way too soon.

Yep, we have nowhere near a proper representative sample of exoplanets to make any real conclusions about what the "typical star system" is.
All the current exoplanet population are pure selection bias, the ones that are easiest to see.
Nancy Grace will change that somewhat, as they tried to design it to better hit some of the current blind spots.

As you likely know, Barbara Tuchman wrote a best selling book entitled, "Stilwell and the American Experience in China."
Gen. [Richard] Stilwell's kept a diary. Here is the Cliff Notes version:
1) Gen. Stilwell, head of the U.S. military mission to China, had TOTAL contempt for Chiang Kai-shek. Stilwell always refers to Chiang as "Peanut."
2) Stilwell believed that the Nationalist govt was so corrupt and un-reformable that every American dollar spent trying to help Peanut was wasted. EVERY damn dollar. He cites numerous examples of U.S. attempts to help Chiang, all of which came to nothing, because Chiang's "commanders" didn't make any real effort to fight Mao. They just wanted loot, and the Nationalist conscripts were totally demoralized as a result. Stilwell couldn't do a thing about that, despite herculean efforts to turn the unfolding disaster around.
3) Chiang's power base, to the extent he ever had one, was located in the larger cities, all of which had been occupied first by the Japanese, & then by the Communists.
So, who lost China? Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek. The Nationalist "commanders" even stole utensils from military hospitals.

The lid is on a riser that sticks up out of the ground about half a foot. Most of the hole I dug was "adjacent to" not "over" the tank itself.
I really don't know if this repair I did will work until I let the inlet side of the tank rise above the half-full level. If it works, then Yaay! If not, I am no worse off than before; just keep the inlet side below half-way, and deal with it.

The original British patent used metal cans where the lids were crimped and soldered on. There were a number of preservation methods used prior to that, one of them was called (later) french preserving where cooked meats were put in ceramic jugs and covered with fats to exclude air and bacteria and then closed with oiled paper. In the canning process where the contents and the container are sealed and then heated to sterilize, jars were not used until later, when a process to make the mouths of the jars regular and easily sealable was developed, and rubber sealing rings were made for sealing.

In the 1920's, I believe grandma still used a woodstove for her cooking and canning. I know in the south, women used woodstoves outdoors because they didn't want to heat up the whole house. Some of grandma's recipes still state "cook over low fire" or "stoke fire to medium heat." I have no idea how she knew how to do that. I would be at sea.

One might note that this was "producer gas", made by reacting burning coal with steam. Made up of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, water vapor, and some hydrocarbon gases, IIRC. There was a lot of CO. That is why sticking one's head in an unlit gas oven was such a popular method of suicide back in the day.

That mega-earth planet is really weird. It's apparently on a polar orbit (relative to the star's spin axis), and has an axial tilt of 70 degrees relative to that orbit, and is very close, orbital period of 17.8 days. Very hot rock.

My two best shots were a 35~40 yard chip in for birdie on a slightly rolling and sloped green after I topped my first shot, and a tee shot that was rolling straight for the cup but stopped just 12" from the cup thanks to an aerated green. We all thought I had it, and are certain I would have had the green been clean.

My mom sealed all her jams and jellies with paraffin. You could reuse it, so it was a cheap way to preserve. But we used all if it within six months, I'm sure, because of a big family. If it needs to last longer than that, probably better to use sealed lids.

Possibly, but the main problem with canning is botulism, which is an anaerobic soil microbe, and has to be heated to about 240F for a period to destroy. All the Argon will do is displace the O2, which is perfect for the botulism to grow.
now, what I am interested in is "pascalization" which puts the food under extreme pressure for a short while and then released, which kills all the spoiling and toxic microorganisms, without heat modifying the food. 50.000 psi comes to mind but I would have to look it up. The drawbacks are that the enzymes may not be destroyed and can continue to digest and change the food being preserved, and the current equipment will fit nicely into a semi trailer.

I worked with a guy from Spain who said his mom used whichever jars they had saved. Since I gather up canning jars like a fiend it made my soul hurt a tiny bit to think of someone canning in the equivalent of a Pace salsa jar reusing the original lid. Sufficient pressure to break down the cells of microorganisms might also break down the cellular structure of the food, making it into syrup. Unless perhaps the pressure simply reverses osmotic pressure on the cell walls of the "bugs" causing them to die, while having no effect on the already dead cells of the food material?
What about using gunpowder to drive a ram into a cylinder of the food to be preserved?

Heat canning also breaks down the cell structure, and the extended cooking changes the textures and flavors, which is an issue with things like guacamole or oysters. Generally not a problem if you avoid the things that cause problems like that
I would be more into using a hydraulic ram to compress a water bath to transmit pressure to the food in plastic bags
The Finns at the Hydraulic Press Channel could give me tips, I guess.
I actually talked to one manufacturer in Catalonia, but the pricing and shipping were insane.

I've been given boxes of "canning jars"-- only to find that half (or more) were merely plain glass empties of whatever. I will not use those, and I don't seal with paraffin. Lids, bands, and water bath processing only.

I've probably seen a couple hundred concerts since 1971, including the Grateful Dead at the Boston Garden on 5/7/77, the Newgrass Revival at the Ark in '87, John Jorgenson, Dave Alvin, Desert Rose Band... but the Billy Strings & Co show in Fishers IN (Indy) on 8/8/26 was easily in the top five shows ever. I was speechless when we left (a very rare occurrence). Billy is a phenomenal guitarist, absolutely, as well as composer, arranger, and band leader. The kitchen gets put in this month, and then I can make all the various soups I usually put up in fall. I have dried peppers as well, and I start on potatoes next week.
Beef barley soup, chicken tortilla soup, chicken rice soup, ham bean soup, all kinds of lovely things to eat all year. I usually put up about 80 pint jars of soups and we routinely eat all of them in one year between the two of us. Whip up some biscuits and it's dinner.

I have found several ways to make life easier by doing a big canning job once, and then living off it for weeks or months. Considering how short but productive our growing season is up here, it makes more sense than ever to do so, but I suspect in the Lower 48 it would be just as well.
So much better than convenience foods you buy. I know where it came from, I know it's healthy and tasty, and I can control exactly what I have and what I use it for.
Gosh, I would have made an excellent trad wife, now that I consider it.

Unless you are actually going to backpack it, one of the tried and true Coleman tabletop models. Size and weight are significant if you are actually backpacking. I use an older Coleman Peak One, which is bulky.

If you want shredded potatoes for something, and don't want to spend the time to make them, you can thaw tater tots in the microwave and break them up.
I just made an omelet with 1/4 pound of Jimmy Dean hot sausage, two eggs, a thick slice of Tillamook sharp cheddar crumbled, six crumbled tots, and some frozen pepper strips.
I had planned to eat half of it and save the other half for breakfast.
That plan didn't work out.

I have a couple of old mason type jars on my kitchen window ledge, they were filled with wildflowers almost all summer, now I'll have to go back to buying supermarket bunches every two weeks. I like the way they look there, kind of that old glass with an aqua tinge to it, very pretty.

I've seen that before, and it is so weird!
We were at Devil's Postpile last week. The sign said the hexagons come from cracks forming at 120 degrees in various places, then meeting to make hexagons. I'm not 100% convinced. Why are all the pillars nearly the same size?

The South pole didn't have any such geometric pattern while Cassini was there. However, recent Hubble images now show a decagon has developed there:

They think that first started to develop in 2023 or so. The hexagon seems to be be more permanent.

Nature can produce surprisingly coherent geometric shapes as well as the usual fractal looking patterns. Telling the difference between natural and man-made (or .... not saying who, but you know who) is tricky sometimes.
In figuring out that hexagon, then were able to get patterns with water and differential rotation (one of those articles may mention that). So, we do see these polygons emerging out of spinning fluids naturally. Surprising.

I am stuck in the stage where I just want her back. Not sure that's one of the stages of grief, but it sort of sucks.
My good friend who chartered the plane and chose who went? He's struggling mightily as well, so a prayer or two for him, please. We are monitoring him closely, just in case. But he is a vet from the Afghanistan campaigns, so he is acquainted with misery and death. I'm not sure it gets easier but maybe he has a framework to put it all in.

We had a fierce rainstorm two nights ago as I was returning home from the scout meeting. Dead loads on rain pelting down in the wind gusts.
I spent Wednesday morning cleaning out the gutters at the back of the house and finished up in the early afternoon just before another burst of rain hit the area.
