I am favorably inclined to the Deere but when I think of John Deere, it also conjures thoughts of "outdoor scents" that seem sub-optimal for my personal care needs.

I am curious about the "limited edition" packaging. Are potential buyers considering a purchase of John Deere deodorant at Walmart because it is a collectible? It must trigger an unconscious need-to-buy instinct. In related news, there are probably many reasons that I don't work in marketing...

Does anyone have an inside source at Walmart to find out how many of these are actually being sold?

Niche YouTube Channel of the Week

Tonight's feature is a YouTube channel called Hydraulic Press Channel. The premise is simple - what do things look like when they're smashed in a hydraulic press?

That's it. No narration, explanation, or elaborate plots. Just smashing things.

You could be thinking one of two things. Either (a) a single YouTube channel dedicated to smashing things? really? or (b) Awesome!

Apparently lots of people think it is awesome - the channel has over 10.3 million subscribers. Many videos have millions of views. It all started ten years ago with a minute and a half video of smashing a golf ball.

The question is not what has been smashed on the channel. The better question is what has yet to be smashed. If you can think of it and it fits beneath a hydraulic press, it has probably been smashed.

110 Had to drop my car off at the dealer today and was won I haven't been to before. After work I pulled up to their service area to do a drop off and....they had a car parked in the way blocking entry.

I went into the dealership part and they told me I had to drive all the way around the back of the building. "Its to keep the cars safer" they said.

What the heck? They have hundreds of new cars on the lot and they use one to block off the area were the cars they are working on are located?

1) How bad is crime in this area?
2) Why wouldn't you steal a new car instead of an old busted one?

112 Much better today after my husband's surprise MRI that he was falling apart (gluteus minimus detached from bone and other stuff).

Not much pain & he's had a few tears fixed in the past with a stem cell injection. No limp, either, thankfully. He may or may not need endoscopic surgery. The result of long distance running for 40yrs.

He found on AI that being a geezer (his words) they may not bother since other muscles are compensating. A rare advantage of being old (altho neither of us look it or act it). It gave me hope.

Spent all morning on the phone getting the MRI sent to the university and top doc's team. Who, I found out, does not operate often on people over 50yrs. However they will find someone. Meanwhile I found two others if we need another opinion. Then I quit and focused on nothing.

Things are looking up.

We may need your prayers in the future, please, as he's only had one tiny surgery in his life (cut thumb tendon, the guitar picking thumb that is fine, one Easter dinner).

So we wait. I'm waiting. Probably won't know squat til next week. Got the MRI faxed & referral letter faxed to "the team."

On the exoplanet front, they've found another wild one, GJ 523b. This is a "mega-earth", even more massive than a super-earth. It's about 23 earth masses and 2.5 earth radii (which would translate to a surface gravity of 3.7 g).

It's orbiting a mid-K star, GJ 523, about 87 light years away.

This is an outlier oddball. Very dense, but large radius.

I might break the ice and interject that it was too much sex with the university crew to flip my husband right out. heh.

He ran too far for too long. Was known as an "elite" runner in his prime. 4min miles, which girls are breaking now in HS. To run that fast for many miles is now taking its toll.

I hate running. He hates swimming. Guess what he might have to do in rehab either way? I told him to swim when we had a pool in FL, "but he didn't like it."

Well, here we are now with me limber and him falling apart.

I love him madly and someone is going to fix him if he needs it (the lady on the phone realized this about the over 50yrs comment for King Doctor of Ortho).

There was nobody in the bar but the bartender and some guy up on stage, a short young fellow, dressed in raggedy blue jeans and a big smile, strumming on a beat-up old guitar.

As we stood there, he burst out with a familiar train song. We listened a while, then headed out to shop more.

I turned to her and exclaimed, that was a great version of that song! She replied, it ought to be, that was the guy who wrote it. I said, you mean we just walked out of a private performance with the guy we just bought tickets to see on New Year's?!? Yup. We should have just gone back in.

But we caught his show that New Year's, and the second set, and many New Year's shows subsequently. Great songwriter, energetic performer, and a great guy. Gone 'way too soon.

We didn't abandon them, we tied their hands behind their backs. As soon as the war ended, the Nationalists were really to wipe out the Commies, but was said "no, wait, be nice, form a unity government" and they had to comply.

Yep, we have nowhere near a proper representative sample of exoplanets to make any real conclusions about what the "typical star system" is.

All the current exoplanet population are pure selection bias, the ones that are easiest to see.

Nancy Grace will change that somewhat, as they tried to design it to better hit some of the current blind spots.

As you likely know, Barbara Tuchman wrote a best selling book entitled, "Stilwell and the American Experience in China."

Gen. [Richard] Stilwell's kept a diary. Here is the Cliff Notes version:

1) Gen. Stilwell, head of the U.S. military mission to China, had TOTAL contempt for Chiang Kai-shek. Stilwell always refers to Chiang as "Peanut."

2) Stilwell believed that the Nationalist govt was so corrupt and un-reformable that every American dollar spent trying to help Peanut was wasted. EVERY damn dollar. He cites numerous examples of U.S. attempts to help Chiang, all of which came to nothing, because Chiang's "commanders" didn't make any real effort to fight Mao. They just wanted loot, and the Nationalist conscripts were totally demoralized as a result. Stilwell couldn't do a thing about that, despite herculean efforts to turn the unfolding disaster around.

3) Chiang's power base, to the extent he ever had one, was located in the larger cities, all of which had been occupied first by the Japanese, & then by the Communists.

So, who lost China? Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek. The Nationalist "commanders" even stole utensils from military hospitals.

The lid is on a riser that sticks up out of the ground about half a foot. Most of the hole I dug was "adjacent to" not "over" the tank itself.

I really don't know if this repair I did will work until I let the inlet side of the tank rise above the half-full level. If it works, then Yaay! If not, I am no worse off than before; just keep the inlet side below half-way, and deal with it.

The original British patent used metal cans where the lids were crimped and soldered on. There were a number of preservation methods used prior to that, one of them was called (later) french preserving where cooked meats were put in ceramic jugs and covered with fats to exclude air and bacteria and then closed with oiled paper. In the canning process where the contents and the container are sealed and then heated to sterilize, jars were not used until later, when a process to make the mouths of the jars regular and easily sealable was developed, and rubber sealing rings were made for sealing.
