Get out there and take a look at the moon! On the night of 27 August 2026 the Earth's shadow will slide across a full Moon and turn it copper for more than an hour, a partial lunar eclipse visible from the Americas without any equipment except a clear sky
...weather permitting, the full Moon over the Americas is going to do something it will not do again for more than two years. Beginning in the late evening of Thursday, August 27, Earth’s shadow will creep across the lunar surface until, a little after midnight on the East Coast, 96 percent of the Moon sits inside it, glowing a dim, rusty copper with only a bright sliver left along one edge. Technically it is a partial lunar eclipse. Practically, it is about as close to a total one as a partial can get, and astronomers are calling it the best lunar eclipse anywhere on Earth until New Year’s Eve 2028. *** For viewers in the eastern half of North America, the timeline runs like this. The subtle penumbral shading begins around 9:24 pm Eastern time on the 27th. The real event, the partial phase, starts at 10:34 pm, when the curved edge of Earth’s dark inner shadow, the umbra, takes its first visible bite out of the Moon. The shadow advances for the next hour and a half until maximum eclipse at 12:12 am Eastern, when 96.3 percent of the disk is immersed and the Moon hangs copper-red in the sky. The shadow then slides off, with the partial phase ending at 1:52 am and the whole affair over by 3 am. Subtract the hours for other zones: maximum comes at 11:12 pm Central, 10:12 pm Mountain, 9:12 pm Pacific. West Coast viewers see the Moon rise with the eclipse already underway, low in the southeastern sky, which is a gift for photographers who want a shadowed Moon hanging over a skyline.Please share your respective moon-gazing experiences tonight. Juneau absolutely has local roads.
The City and Borough of Juneau says Glacier Highway extends about 40 miles north of downtown, but there are no roads out of Juneau. Alaska DOT describes Juneau as the largest North American community not connected to the continental highway system; outside access is by air or water/ferry.
So I changed the production wording to the more precise:
“No road connects Juneau to the continental highway system.”
The Alaska fact also checks out: Alaska is larger than Texas + California + Montana combined. Federal material explicitly makes that comparison, and current Census area figures support it.
Hmmm. Interesting. Learning is fun.

The penumbral phase has well begun, but you can't really see the difference in brightness. Well trained less than 29 yr old eyes can detect the subtle change in brightness.
Umbral phase will begin in about 10 minutes, at 10:33 EDT.

Note that lunar eclipses timing are absolute. Phases occur at the same time for everybody.

Thanks for the Flock updates. A camera near us was installed, then uninstalled a month or so later. The camera was then reinstalled and promptly "uninstalled" by some teenagers in the middle of the night. Those teenagers managed to get caught in the act and are facing charges. The Flock camera is still down.

Oct, Nov, Dec: Hunter's, Beaver, Cold
Now, the Full Moon closest to the Autumnal Equinox is called the Harvest Moon.
I group them in threes in the above because of the alternative seasonal naming convention. The list goes, Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall.
In the seasonal convention, this Moon would be a Corn Moon, the last full Moon of Summer.

No roads connect most of SE AK to anything. Juneau, Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg, etc. The only close spot is Haines, and you can only get there on the highway if you go through Canada. Hence, the Marine Highway, which is various ferries that connect most of Southeast.
AK is... different.

Most of coastal British Columbia is exactly the same. The coastal highway ends a few miles beyond Powell River. It's the fjords. Too wide near the mouth to bridge, often too steep-sided to build a road around, and not enough potential traffic to make such a construction worthwhile. But roads from the heads of the fjords into the interior are possible, and exist in some places.

Fracking gives us affordable fuel from formations that were long thought to be worthless. It is far from clear that AI is worth a bucket of warm spit. Apples and road apples. Having said that, data centers, and proposed data centers should be examined on their merits. Will they do anything useful for society as a whole? Or are they a means of expanding the surveillance state?

Flock is part of the Panopticon, The other cameras are situational only. Huge difference. Flock makes it dead easy for an evildoer in the police apparat, to stalk somebody. The other cameras are only really useful (to some extent) after the fact of a crime.

Build them in blighted urban areas. They claim "latency" is an issue. The way to reduce latency is to build them as close to the backbone as possible. Blighted urban areas fit the bill. Farmland out in the sticks does not.

We have a data center that might be built in Evanston. We are in the midst of a severe drought here in SW Wyoming and have been on strict water restrictions since early spring.
Boy Howdy, let's suck up the remaining water to build data centers. No gardens and landscaping were banned right at planting time at the beginning of spring.

Do you get phishing calls? I assiduously avoid putting my information online but somehow, in the last 4 months, I get at least four to five texts or phone calls about a loan application - approval only one click away. Flock can extrapolate that type of problem exponentially. Heat maps are real. Cross referencing is easier and easier.
The potential danger from outliers or corporate is much more, in the near future, than from the government.

We can't control the weather of course. We are rural and people grow vegetables to can or freeze to get through winter. Also, there is no feed for the cattle ranchers unless they have a well.
It is such a divisive issue in many places in our country.

The water "consumption" issue is a Red herring. It is quite possible to recycle the cooling water, and the only losses are to evaporation. And the cooling water need not be potable, or fit to be used for irrigation.

Data centers around here are providing their own electricity via natural gas fired generating plants and planned nuclear plants.
They are using closed loop cooling that daily water usage is no more than a golf course.

Build them in blighted urban areas. They claim "latency" is an issue. The way to reduce latency is to build them as close to the backbone as possible. Blighted urban areas fit the bill. Farmland out in the sticks does not.

Nevada is 90% public land, it's almost impossible to not build on public land in that state.
Yes, improving latency means you want servers near people using them. If two AI services are competing and one takes a few milliseconds to respond because it's located 30 miles away and the other takes 3 seconds because it's based in Greenland then most people are going to very strongly prefer to use the first option. Especially when you scale to to thousands or even millions of requests for things like AI coding.
Blighted urban areas are usually blighted for a reason. Putting a bunch of very expensive equipment that needs reliable utilities is not going to go well.

Wyoming is cool. My great grandpa moved there from NY before the turn of the PREVIOUS century and was an attorney, but also a gentleman farmer in Laramie. My dad lived there until the middle of WWII, when they could no longer support the diary operation. There remains Corthell Street and I believe a Corthell Hall at the U. My dad went to the University School, which was an experimental elementary school on the campus. Learned all sorts of things nobody teaches anymore. My great grandpa settled the mineral rights laws before the Supreme Court that still governs all of Wyoming, which is kinda cool. But he was also a teetotaller who voted for Prohibition, so it's a mixed bag.
Anyway, Wyoming has very interesting history.

Hubby was born and grew up in Columbia. Graduated Citadel and USC Law School.
He told me tonight he is reading a book that Trey Gowdy is co-authoring with some other person, I can't remember who.
We lived in Columbia for 15 years to take care of his parents.
One character in his book is a waitress who works at Lizard's Thicket in Columbia. Oh my, we got takeout from there twice a week. We were talking about how much we miss the fried catfish from there.
The only fish we have here in our small town is goldfish, lol.

This can matter for things like high-frequency trading, but not for anything that operates on a human scale.
The distance from Nuuk, Greenland to Los Angeles is about 3,000 miles, or 0.016 seconds at the speed of light.
What *can* increase lag is net congestion or (especially) satellite hops, but the terrestrial fiber optic delay to anywhere on the planet is probably not going to be noticeable by a human being. If you go all the way to the antipodes of wherever you are, it's still only going to be about a tenth of a second.

A lot of trails here have been shut down because of safety reasons. Son said they are tired of the phone calls and emails telling them it sucks some of the trails are closed down.

Normally here we are infested with flies. This year with drought, no snow, no rain we haven't had an issue with flies.
We have a bit of rain the last couple of weeks and the nasty bastards are everywhere.
The grandchildren were here tonight and they had such a great time with our salt gun shooting the flies. They did a great job, no flies in the house tonight.

You aren't getting a single fiber optic hop to anywhere in Greenland. The speed of light is the theoretical best case, your practical ping to isolated reaches of the world is much much slower.
Yes 3 seconds was an exaggeration, but there are plenty of use cases in computing outside of HFT where a 150ms ping to the server is not tolerable.

We figure if we are chopping up vegetables or whatever why not do a lot and put the stuff in the freezer. Plus our son, daughter-in-law and four grandchildren are 4 blocks from us so it helps them.
Intuitional food in most places does suck. People might recover quicker if they were fed decent food.

Green River is small. We go there sometimes to shop. Rock Springs is just a little way past Green River and we go there to shop also.
Rock Springs has a very small airport which is mostly to take a flight to connect to a larger airport.
We used to catch the very early morning flight out of there to fly to Denver and get a flight from there East.
It was hilarious. It was always dark driving up the road off I-80 to the airport. You had to be very careful to dodge the cows in the road.

The Moon is over halfway out of the penumbra now. You can't really tell the difference with penumbral vs. normal, it's just too bright.
However, they assure me that trained observers can detect the difference in brightness. I won't argue, but I can't see it by a long shot.

The Nancy Grace Roman telescope is scheduled for launch on Sunday. I'm really looking forward to the cosmological data it will provide. A sanctified shit ton, in fact. This is going to answer a lot of questions over the years of just what the Universe is doing.
Well, put it this way. There are questions that a lot of the models are wrong, but not enough data to know for sure. Roman will provide that, and show if they models are wrong, or if the discrepancies so far have just been some measurement artifact errors.
So, it will tell if we're wrong. If we are, it won't tell us what's right, but will provide clues maybe.

A Firestone I went to had a collection of the strangest stuff they pulled out of tires...the Christmas mug took the cake...broken with two sharp points. Whatever tire took that was royally screwed, so to speak.

I’m on a national forest road. Not too far from a highway, but it is not in very good shape. It gets worse farther down. Not super bad, but I didn’t feel like tearing stuff up.
The other day I saw a big freightliner tractor trailer and a 50 foot empty flatbed drive by bright and early. Where is he going? Guess he knows what he’s doing. Or, he doesn’t know what he’s doing. Cause the road is bad.
A couple hours later I hear the truck. Wonder what he’s carrying? Turns out he was backing up. Which has to suck on a twisty turny rutted road. Better than a tow, I guess. Sure is strange.

There was a time maybe 25+ years ago that one of the local freeways extended from the east and from the west, but didn't meet in between (bureaucratic holdups on it's completion), but there WAS a tiny dirt road. I drove it once just to see if it met...turned out it ended at a small housing development with fully established homes in it...and if you drove through that, it'd meet with the other side of the freeway. Road sucked, was full of dips and potholes that I had to drive very, very carefully on. Good thing it hadn't been raining...

It's funny, they (the union demo crew) sent a checker afterward.. it's creepy.. always surveillance.. and I'd gotten my tire fixed and remounted by the time the checker drove by that evening.
Too bad, so sad fellas-- this gal got her shit fixed and didn't miss any work. Fk you!

It's actually a good thing. The fewer places criminals can get away with assaulting people, robbing people, stealing cars, stealing merchandise, committing murder, the safer the country is.
The thing to fight is their inappropriate use. If they are being accessed by law enforcement without a warrant when a warrant is constitutionally required, that needs to be stopped, but NOT by criminal action.
A lot of sweeping surveillance will not be stopped, because the surveillance cameras are privately owned, and are located on private property, with the approval of the property owners.
I'm hoping they can be used to crack down on shoplifting, especially the organized retail theft that requires large scale data collection.
All power to Home Depot etcetera if they can refine indoor and outdoor surveillance to the point where shoplifters just can't get away with it anymore.
When the government starts using them to ticket everyone who slow-rolls a right-turn-on-red, we need to vote out the government, not blame the cameras.
