Get out there and take a look at the moon!

On the night of 27 August 2026 the Earth's shadow will slide across a full Moon and turn it copper for more than an hour, a partial lunar eclipse visible from the Americas without any equipment except a clear sky

...weather permitting, the full Moon over the Americas is going to do something it will not do again for more than two years. Beginning in the late evening of Thursday, August 27, Earth’s shadow will creep across the lunar surface until, a little after midnight on the East Coast, 96 percent of the Moon sits inside it, glowing a dim, rusty copper with only a bright sliver left along one edge.
Technically it is a partial lunar eclipse. Practically, it is about as close to a total one as a partial can get, and astronomers are calling it the best lunar eclipse anywhere on Earth until New Year’s Eve 2028.

For viewers in the eastern half of North America, the timeline runs like this. The subtle penumbral shading begins around 9:24 pm Eastern time on the 27th. The real event, the partial phase, starts at 10:34 pm, when the curved edge of Earth’s dark inner shadow, the umbra, takes its first visible bite out of the Moon. The shadow advances for the next hour and a half until maximum eclipse at 12:12 am Eastern, when 96.3 percent of the disk is immersed and the Moon hangs copper-red in the sky. The shadow then slides off, with the partial phase ending at 1:52 am and the whole affair over by 3 am.
Subtract the hours for other zones: maximum comes at 11:12 pm Central, 10:12 pm Mountain, 9:12 pm Pacific. West Coast viewers see the Moon rise with the eclipse already underway, low in the southeastern sky, which is a gift for photographers who want a shadowed Moon hanging over a skyline.

Black spray paint has many uses

These facts may or may not be related.
1. You can buy cans of black spray paint at Walmart for under 3 bucks.
2. Paint on a solar panel is a bad idea, it will block all the light and make the panel useless.
3. From a distance a panel sprayed with black paint would look just fine.
4. Flock Cameras are solar powered and the area of their panel surface is 595 square inches
5. A single can of spray paint can fully cover 2880 square inches.
6. 2880 divided by 595 is 4.84
See kids math is a valuable skill you really will need it in the real world.

Pushback against Flock in Oshkosh, Wisconsin

A police chief in Oshkosh, Wisconsin caught Flock lying to his city council, and killed the $8 billion surveillance company's contract less than a day after the council had approved it.
Here's how it happened.
The night before, Oshkosh's council was set to renew its deal with Flock Safety, the license plate camera company backed by a16z and Tiger Global.
One council member asked the Flock rep a plain yes-or-no question. Does this system build a heat map of everywhere a specific car travels over time?
Flock's rep said no.
The council believed him and voted 5 to 2 to renew. By the next morning, Chief Dean Smith's own officers had told him that answer was false.
So he pulled up the system himself. He watched it generate the exact heat map Flock had just sworn it couldn't make.
Then he walked into an emergency meeting and said it out loud: "Because of this misrepresentation, I can no longer recommend Flock."
Understand what a heat map is, because it's the whole trick.

Felony charges dropped against Golden Gate Bridge protesters

A two-year legal battle over a dramatic protest against the war on Gaza came to an end on Friday as seven protesters who’d blocked traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge received 30-day sentences and $1,000 fines.
Over two dozen activists halted several lanes of traffic on the bridge on April 15, 2024, six months into Israel’s war in the Palestinian territory that has been widely recognized as a genocide. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins charged 26 of them with crimes. Most were offered diversion, in the form of fines and community service, but Jenkins hit seven protesters with a raft of serious charges, including felony conspiracy.

After a two-and-a-half-week trial, jurors deadlocked in June over the most serious charges but convicted the protesters on several misdemeanors, including obstructing a thoroughfare, unlawful assembly, and four counts of false imprisonment related to trapped commuters.
Jenkins’ office had considered a new trial on the conspiracy charges, but assistant district attorney Angela Roze announced on Friday that the remaining charges would all be dropped.

24 Look, it's not just the cameras, it's all of the correlation with other data (that companies will sell, the government will just take (or buy if that is easier)). Combined with a Central Bank Digital Currency, the fed.gov can completely control you, and make it look like technical glitches that occur randomly. Like that idea when Trump is in office? The Juneau fact is real, but your instinct caught the wording issue.

Juneau absolutely has local roads.

The City and Borough of Juneau says Glacier Highway extends about 40 miles north of downtown, but there are no roads out of Juneau. Alaska DOT describes Juneau as the largest North American community not connected to the continental highway system; outside access is by air or water/ferry.

So I changed the production wording to the more precise:

“No road connects Juneau to the continental highway system.”

The Alaska fact also checks out: Alaska is larger than Texas + California + Montana combined. Federal material explicitly makes that comparison, and current Census area figures support it.

Hmmm. Interesting. Learning is fun.

The penumbral phase has well begun, but you can't really see the difference in brightness. Well trained less than 29 yr old eyes can detect the subtle change in brightness.

Umbral phase will begin in about 10 minutes, at 10:33 EDT.

We’ve had data centers for decades. Nobody gave a fuck. Now it’s an existential threat to our lives? Interesting. We’ve also had traffic cameras forever. Nobody noticed nobody cared. Now these cameras are the biggest issue in the land Al of a sudden? Not to mention that every house has a ring camera pointing at the street. Cops have used those for the same purpose they use flock.

Somethings fishy how these two issues burst onto the scene out of the blue like that.

For all interested, go to timeanddate.com, put in your location, and get moonrise and set times, then click on the eclipse link. It will have all the timings.

Note that lunar eclipses timing are absolute. Phases occur at the same time for everybody.

Thanks for the Flock updates. A camera near us was installed, then uninstalled a month or so later. The camera was then reinstalled and promptly "uninstalled" by some teenagers in the middle of the night. Those teenagers managed to get caught in the act and are facing charges. The Flock camera is still down.

Now, the Full Moon closest to the Autumnal Equinox is called the Harvest Moon.

No roads connect most of SE AK to anything. Juneau, Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg, etc. The only close spot is Haines, and you can only get there on the highway if you go through Canada. Hence, the Marine Highway, which is various ferries that connect most of Southeast.

Most of coastal British Columbia is exactly the same. The coastal highway ends a few miles beyond Powell River. It's the fjords. Too wide near the mouth to bridge, often too steep-sided to build a road around, and not enough potential traffic to make such a construction worthwhile. But roads from the heads of the fjords into the interior are possible, and exist in some places.

I just bought a new smart phone; put it on line yesterday. It's a google Pixel 6a, but the Android OS was wiped and replaced by Graphene OS, which is focused upon user privacy and security. So far, so good. Any cellphone can be tracked by how it it pings the towers, and that is unavoidable, if the the phone is work at all.

It's also the backlash to cameras breaking through their mysticism. 20 years ago every criminal that died was "police brutality", but now the bodycam footage frequently exonerates the police and shows the true colors of many supposed victims.

We have a data center that might be built in Evanston. We are in the midst of a severe drought here in SW Wyoming and have been on strict water restrictions since early spring.

Boy Howdy, let's suck up the remaining water to build data centers. No gardens and landscaping were banned right at planting time at the beginning of spring.

Flock could sell your information or be hacked.

Do you get phishing calls? I assiduously avoid putting my information online but somehow, in the last 4 months, I get at least four to five texts or phone calls about a loan application - approval only one click away. Flock can extrapolate that type of problem exponentially. Heat maps are real. Cross referencing is easier and easier.

The potential danger from outliers or corporate is much more, in the near future, than from the government.

232 Cloudy here in the second capitol of Californistan. Caught a dim glimpse of the moon but it'll be in fullest eclipse in less than half an hour so maybe there'll be a break in the overcast. Our bedroom faces east so any time there's a full moon, it shines right in our faces. Had to put translucent glass into the clerestory window to cut down on the light. Along with blackout drapes on the big window below, which also keeps the heat out as that side of the house gets sun all frickin' day. Not to self: bring a compass when buying the next house and make sure the master bedroom isn't on the south/southeast side.

The water "consumption" issue is a Red herring. It is quite possible to recycle the cooling water, and the only losses are to evaporation. And the cooling water need not be potable, or fit to be used for irrigation.

Data centers around here are providing their own electricity via natural gas fired generating plants and planned nuclear plants.
They are using closed loop cooling that daily water usage is no more than a golf course.

Build them in blighted urban areas. They claim "latency" is an issue. The way to reduce latency is to build them as close to the backbone as possible. Blighted urban areas fit the bill. Farmland out in the sticks does not.

Nevada is 90% public land, it's almost impossible to not build on public land in that state.

Yes, improving latency means you want servers near people using them. If two AI services are competing and one takes a few milliseconds to respond because it's located 30 miles away and the other takes 3 seconds because it's based in Greenland then most people are going to very strongly prefer to use the first option. Especially when you scale to to thousands or even millions of requests for things like AI coding.

Blighted urban areas are usually blighted for a reason. Putting a bunch of very expensive equipment that needs reliable utilities is not going to go well.

Wyoming is cool. My great grandpa moved there from NY before the turn of the PREVIOUS century and was an attorney, but also a gentleman farmer in Laramie. My dad lived there until the middle of WWII, when they could no longer support the diary operation. There remains Corthell Street and I believe a Corthell Hall at the U. My dad went to the University School, which was an experimental elementary school on the campus. Learned all sorts of things nobody teaches anymore. My great grandpa settled the mineral rights laws before the Supreme Court that still governs all of Wyoming, which is kinda cool. But he was also a teetotaller who voted for Prohibition, so it's a mixed bag.

Anyway, Wyoming has very interesting history.

My dinky little snapshot camera is not up.to.the task, but I'll take a run at it - 4X optical, 6X digital and it actually takes upm30% of the frame. Holding it steady without a tripod, though...

This might interest you or not, lol.

Hubby was born and grew up in Columbia. Graduated Citadel and USC Law School.

He told me tonight he is reading a book that Trey Gowdy is co-authoring with some other person, I can't remember who.

We lived in Columbia for 15 years to take care of his parents.

One character in his book is a waitress who works at Lizard's Thicket in Columbia. Oh my, we got takeout from there twice a week. We were talking about how much we miss the fried catfish from there.

The only fish we have here in our small town is goldfish, lol.

273 Grabbed from some news releases - The TVA is planning major increases in generation capacity, driven by expected growth from data centers locally. Data center load has already grown substantially and is projected to double by 2030. TVA has also adjusted its wholesale rate structure to create higher rates for data centers so that the costs of serving these newer loads are not born by residential rate payers.

And, equally as important, we have huge amounts of surface water available for cooling needs. Don't even have to drill for it.

Of course, we'll see how they all manage to mess this up.
