----- Truth is stranger than fiction
Hold onto your helmets, fashion fans! First Lady Melania Trump just dropped pure high-octane glamour in the White House Rose Garden. On August 20, 2026, she posed with a sleek, custom red-white-and-blue IndyCar emblazoned with “Be Best” and “Fostering the Future,” turning a scholarship announcement into the ultimate style pit stop. In one of the standout shots making the rounds, Melania sits casually on the gleaming race car, holding a matching commemorative helmet, looking every bit the chic powerhouse who could outpace the competition in polish. The car itself is a patriotic dream with the stars and stripes energy and Freedom 250 branding. Melania matched its vibe perfectly. ![]() Melania wore a crisp, oversized blue Michael Kors Collection Crystal-Cufflink button-down shirt with the collar popped high and the top buttons undone to look effortlessly effortless. The cufflinks were swapped out for ones with the presidential seal. This was tucked into a vivid red Dior wool pencil skirt in a combo that screamed classic Americana while staying razor-sharp. Red Manolo Blahnik BB suede pumps in Tabasco Red completed the ensemble, adding a dash of high-heel horsepower. ![]() Why It Works (and Why We’re Obsessed) Melania has long mastered the art of making political moments feel like fashion editorials. This one blends her signature tailored elegance with a side of cheeky. The oversized shirt softens the structured skirt, creating a modern, slightly menswear-inspired vibe. Those red pumps? Pure statement-making, matching the car’s fiery hue. It’s not just clothes; it’s a whole mood. Pairing high fashion with an actual IndyCar parked on the White House grounds feels delightful, like if a Vogue shoot collided with the Indianapolis 500. Gorgeous? Powerful? Absolutely. And ready to take the checkered flag in the va va vroom stakes. And Melania wasn’t the only one bringing the heat to the Rose Garden that day. Harmeet K. Dhillon also brought a little fashion fire in J.Crew! The shirt is J.Crew Tresco Liberty Fabrics Perfect Shirt in Floral Print and the skirt is J.Crew Number 2 Pencil Skirt In Lime Eyelet. She looks like summer, and I am absolutely here for it.

I just spent a good chunk of the weekend building bases for some Ikea Billy Bookcases my wife wants built. She wanted the bases too. She sent me videos on how to make them with 2x4's and plywood. I thought she knew wnlhat she wanted. I thought she measured the height. She didn't
With 2x4 bases there's 79 inches left (Low ceilings in an old basement). The bookcases are 79.5 inches. Fuuuuuuuck. I'm now tearing apart the bases. Will flip the 2x4's on their sides and build the bases that way. Fuuuuuuuck Posted by: 496 at August 23, 2026 10:03 PM (JfNq6) 9

Steve Earle? Loved him on The Wire. Heard an interview with him where he said he was socialist, but he wanted to keep his guitars. When the time comes, I hope I get to be the Commie official who confiscates his guitars FOR THE PEOPLE. Not yours if you believe in socialism. Great videos. Dream of getting a MLB foul ball. Steve Earle! I can listen to Copperhead Road on a loop. His first three albums are gems! He's a commie but I still listen to his music. Excellent writer and has a good band around him. I'm comforted in the fact that the Khmer Rouge fanbois would throw him into the dignity canals too. He's just too burned out to see that. His acting in The Wire was brilliant. Probably not far from where he was when he was a junkie, so easy role.

Because they went into depth in parts of the world ignored by the rest of the media. And even when I disagreed with their editorials, they were up front about their biases. They opened with them. Over time their writing has degraded and it has turned into just another Socialist rag. Actually, it’s worse: punk ass contrarian. What does Venezuela need to improve itself? Capitalism. What does the United States need more of? Socialism. And so on. They spent eight years giving HM The Shahinshah a weekly tongue bath but what frosted me on them for good and killed my subscription with them was their utterly bizarre endorsement of HRC in 2016. I stopped reading their U.S. section long before that though. Posted by: Cow Demon at August 23, 2026 11:43 PM (jPziU) 194

The Economist, at one time (back in the era when it was on newsprint), was my favorite news read. Comprehensive world news, not ridiculously slanted (and of course not dumbed down to the contemporary universal idiocy), often incredibly well written, lots of British wit, etc. This was the 1980s I think.
Now, like literally every other formerly prestigious publication, it's an unwitting self parody of nonsense and silliness. I’d say the moment they went on their downward slide was when their EIC from 1993-2006 left. The U.S. section is a real treat. I stopped reading that long ago as I treasure my sanity. My guess is that The Evonomist uses home-based “journalists” to write the articles. Posted by: Pillage Idiot at August 23, 2026 11:48 PM (HlyYF) I’ve done that hike as well. Our leaders were VERY cognizant of weather conditions before we went in. What makes it so dangerous is that because of drainage patterns in the feet plateau, a flash thunderstorm 50 miles away can drop enough water to flood the canyon even though you can see no clouds at all at the time. It is a fascinating place - there are spots where the walls are 100 feet tall on either side, and yet the opening is 3 feet wide at the bottom, only slightly widening at the top. I remember a sight that really impressed me, from a past flood, was a telephone poll wedged in between the canyon walls, about 30’ over our heads. You can see why calm water is a must for the lift ship operation. That's why they had to tow it. They couldn't make Dampier in Australia which was the original target, so Christmas it was. They've had to conclude that the data they'll get from a recovered Starship is worth the cost of all this. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at August 24, 2026 01:13 AM (w6EFb) 275

And it must be remembered that TX is extremely diverse. I told the story here before. I interviewed for a job once deep in the TX Panhandle, nearly in NM. It was a phone interview. The other end of the line was Houston. It was a beautiful day in Houston, in the 70s. Where I was standing, the weather was rapidly deteriorating as a massive snow storm approached.

The bottom line of all that was the interplay of buoyancy vs gravity and the tipping and rolling moments it generates. A lift ship, when it nearly sinks itself to get under what it's going to lift up, destabilizes itself greatly. One little error and the whole thing tips over. Did a bunch more sanding on the old dune buggy body tub. The whole thing, save for part of the hood, is now bronze metalflake again. If it weren't for the fact that there are some many patches and divots in the gelcoat, I'd be tempted just to shoot it with clear coat and call it good.
Found my stash of fuel tanks, and I think I will be using the '61 tank in it, which came from the same '61 Beetle that gave up its frame platform. Tried to unscrew the main/reserve valve body from the base of the tank, and it twisted right off. But I was able to run a 1/4" NPT tap into the nipple and make a perfect thread, so all is good there.
