Sevierville is in east Tennessee, about a 40 minute drive south and east from Knoxville. Sevierville is considered the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains and places like Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. It is not a large town. It has no airport with regularly scheduled commercial service. It has no main boulevard with bustling honky tonk bars playing live music like Nashville, but it is considered the hometown of Dolly Parton. She grew up in a small cabin about 13 miles away, deeper into the hills and forest.

In these parts, Dolly is considered family regardless of blood relation. The news of her death came as a shock, but a much different and deeper shock than the passing of a celebrity. She was a rare link to old school country music but she was much more than that. Dolly was both Tennessee royalty and the life-long friend next door. In Appalachian terms, they were proud of her and she never forgot where she came from. They looked up to her while she remained one of them.

A statue of Dolly was installed in 1987 in front of the small courthouse in Sevierville. It depicts a barefoot Dolly sitting on a rock with a guitar. In ordinary times, the statue is a frequent and familiar stop for many. Today, it is a gathering point for her broader family to pay their respects. We made our own visit.

A steady stream of people brought flowers and other mementos - many wore Dolly shirts. Visitors spanned gender and age. Some paused at the growing memorial. Others wanted their photo taken with Dolly's statue. They will all remember where and when they heard the news.

Like a wake, hushed comments and murmurs gave voice to emotions and memories. Nobody expected her to be immortal but she was a fixture and a source of strength for years. As an 80 year old that started show biz young, she was always there for most people's lives. Everybody in east Tennessee has a personal Dolly story. Many across the south view Dolly as their patron saint.

Words will be written and said about Dolly. Many will come from people that don't fundamentally understand what made Dolly special or unique why she was so important to her Tennessee family. (Hint: it wasn't just flashy outfits and huge tracts of land.) She wasn't famous for being famous (or infamous). She got the joke but ensured everyone laughed together.

For a musician, sometimes a song says it best. The Carter family reworked a Christian hymn into a funeral hymn that has become a staple of the country music anthology:

I was standin' by the window
On one cold and cloudy day
And I saw the hearse come rollin'
For to carry my mother away

Splinter-free toilet paper didn't exist until the 1930's

Paper has been utilized for purposes of hygiene since the 6th Century, in China. It became a mass-produced product in the 14th Century.
Modern toilet paper, for commercial use, started in the 19th Century and a patent for dispensers, that could hold rolls, was made in 1883.
The rolled toilet paper that we use today, which is perforated, was created in the 1880's. Toilet paper varies immensely; size, roughness, weight, resistance, residues, water-absorption, etc.
The bigger companies invest time and money in surveys to figure out which requirements sell best. This can lead to the adding of aloe in the paper, for a softer feeling paper.
Northern Issue, in 1935, began to advertise toilet paper that was "splinter free." Up until this point, it was common to have splinters in toilet roll, due to the production techniques used. St. Andrew's Paper Mill, in the UK, launched 2-ply paper in 1942.

NJ Transit Toilet News

Ring flushed down New Jersey train toilet returned to owner

A New Jersey woman who accidentally flushed her wedding ring down a train toilet was reunited with the precious object thanks to NJ Transit employees.
Julie Angelicola said she had just left the bathroom aboard an NJ Transit train when she realized her wedding ring was missing.
"So I'm kind of meticulously getting all of this soap off of my hands with toilet paper and literally going finger by finger, and crumpling it all up, trying to do it quickly - threw it in the toilet, flushed the toilet, went back to my seat," Angelicola told WPVI-TV.
She reported the ring's loss to NJ Transit, which took the train out of service.
Employees put the train up on jacks, removed the toilet tank and opened it up to discover Angelicola's ring on top.
The ring was returned to Angelicola on Monday at a NJ Transit Customer Service Center.

Niche YouTube Channel of the Week

Tonight's feature is a YouTube channel called Millennial Farmer. Zach Johnson is a 5th generation family farmer from West Central Minnesota. He promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences on the family farm. At its core, the channel shows where our food comes from and what it takes to produce it.

He's been posting videos on YouTube for 10 years and has accumulated 1.15 million subscribers. His channel shows the work of the farm as the seasons change, from planting through harvest. They primarily grow soybeans and corn.

The channel provides a first-person insight to running a farm.

The channel shows new equipment, repairs and getting stuck in the field. It shows the push of the harvest, including the challenges of weather and darkness. It also is unafraid to tackle business and regulatory factors - or anything else that impacts running a farm. It isn't hysterical but rather pragmatic and descriptive. They primarily run John Deere equipment.

Lots of problem solving.

The channel also shows the family involvement and raising kids on a working farm. It restores your faith in the heartland and is a window to what it takes to be a farmer.

Videos routinely get several hundred thousand views and periodically get millions. Lots of interweb farming interest out there!

I did a trial run yesterday because I needed to make sure the play list worked. I have a newer teacher on Saturday and giving her a playlist where she has to really find the beats for 8 counts would be mean. Anyway, everyone loved it. No issues with Jolene. I love that song - Miley Cyrus does an incredible cover of it, by the way. The tear jerker moment is “I Will Always Love You”. I used it for stretch, so I could use the original and not a remix.

Rick's tribute to Dolly is very good. I never realized how skilled she was playing an acoustic guitar. And the song she wrote and performed for Johnny Carson was fantastic. What a talented lady she was.

about 2012 most of that colored stuff went away. Paper towels with printing on it, patterned TP, and the rest. I think it was a form of shrinkflation.
I stopped buying it because I shopped at really cheap stores, but I suspect it all dried up about then.

Eh...it's supposed to be one of Hitchcock's best. Not to me. It seems very deliberatly slow to build. Frustratingly so. I like Stewart and Novak, however. Never had a fear of heights, so it's somewhat distracting.

I have a novelty TP dispenser. It’s a music box but triggered by pulling toilet paper off. Unfortunately modern toilet paper is thinner than when this thing was built and the cardboard tubes are thinner, too. So the paper isn’t strong enough to wind the music box and the tube isn’t circular enough to let the music play when the springs tighten.

I fell and I couldn't get up! Spent the night on the floor, and the next 6 days in a hospital. Hurt my right knee, but nothing broken or torn.

I'll be getting in-home physical therapy for an unknown period of time.

Hospital: First time I ever had a young woman hold my junk to enable me urinate. I was humiliated and mortified the first time. But then the experience became as familiar and routine as tooth brushing. Both of us bored.

I spent a night on the floor because of an unlikely series of cascading events-- same way most disasters occur. I put two devices on chargers in the kitchen at the same time, 40 feet from my bed. One was a Life Alert-tyoe emergency fall alarm; the other was my cell phone-- while my son was out-of-town. So I was alone.

I had a lot of pain in my face. This pretty nurse was walking towards me and took one look at me, and then she started crying, I mean instant waterworks. I laugh about it now, but I wondered if maybe she was new or something. I’m pretty sure I couldn’t do their job

158 People don't always get up from a fall. I knew a fellow named Gary Burgett, who co-owned the Mason & Hamlin Piano Company. His brother ran the factory in MA, Gary ran the tech end in SF area. He had become very wealthy from inventing the PianoDisc function that so many pianos come with. Started with cassette in the 70s, moved to CD, then digital.
Alone in his big house, he fell down the grand staircase and didn't get up. Found there next day. He was a very nice guy, despite being a genius. He was the best piano player I ever heard.

I can't now, but that is the major goal the physical therapist & I will be aiming toward.

I have multiple problems-- severe arthritis, which showed on the x-rays; terrible stenosis (lower back pain); loss of muscle mass.

So this is going to be a project. I intend to get my regular shower modified into a walk-in shower. (I used to laugh at those ads too.) I intend to put in ramps, to help get over steps I have to climb to enter the house.

For years I've been saying that I'll put up with physical disabilities, as long as i don't have mental ones. Too glib. I may have tempted fate.

I did it. Last Thursday. My foot slipped on the bottom stair coming out of the camper. Went over the edge of the stair, backward, smacked my ass on the ground and my head on the wheel hub. Cut a 2" long gash in the back of my head, which bled like an SOB.

When the EMTs showed up (DH freaked and called), they asked if I lost consciousness. DH informed them that I swore a blue streak the entire time, so, no.

I got up. I put the washcloth on my head cut. I cursed some more. They still took me in the ambulance to the ER, where I got 5 staples.

Now the damned things are itchy, but I need to get them out on Friday.

So, yeah. Curse if it helps, and I think it does.

Although I'd read about them (including the aforementioned graffitum), I had never encountered pay toilets — didn't seem to exist in our neck of the woods — until the road trip Dad, my older brother, and I took to the NY World's Fair in '64. Somewhere along the road "back east," I went into a restroom and there was a long, long row of pay toilets. I'd read that there was usually a free one at the far end, and sure enough there was, maintained about as poorly as you'd expect. Yuck. Didn't use it.

Reminds me of my university days when tending to business in a stall and seeing a glass of water (from the dorm cafeteria) being set on the floor in the stall next to me and a brown finger coming down and swishing in it, turning the water a very murky brown. I never saw those dorm cafeteria glasses the same thereafter.
