Sevierville is in east Tennessee, about a 40 minute drive south and east from Knoxville. Sevierville is considered the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains and places like Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. It is not a large town. It has no airport with regularly scheduled commercial service. It has no main boulevard with bustling honky tonk bars playing live music like Nashville, but it is considered the hometown of Dolly Parton. She grew up in a small cabin about 13 miles away, deeper into the hills and forest.

In these parts, Dolly is considered family regardless of blood relation. The news of her death came as a shock, but a much different and deeper shock than the passing of a celebrity. She was a rare link to old school country music but she was much more than that. Dolly was both Tennessee royalty and the life-long friend next door. In Appalachian terms, they were proud of her and she never forgot where she came from. They looked up to her while she remained one of them.

A statue of Dolly was installed in 1987 in front of the small courthouse in Sevierville. It depicts a barefoot Dolly sitting on a rock with a guitar. In ordinary times, the statue is a frequent and familiar stop for many. Today, it is a gathering point for her broader family to pay their respects. We made our own visit.

A steady stream of people brought flowers and other mementos - many wore Dolly shirts. Visitors spanned gender and age. Some paused at the growing memorial. Others wanted their photo taken with Dolly's statue. They will all remember where and when they heard the news.

Like a wake, hushed comments and murmurs gave voice to emotions and memories. Nobody expected her to be immortal but she was a fixture and a source of strength for years. As an 80 year old that started show biz young, she was always there for most people's lives. Everybody in east Tennessee has a personal Dolly story. Many across the south view Dolly as their patron saint.

Words will be written and said about Dolly. Many will come from people that don't fundamentally understand what made Dolly special or unique why she was so important to her Tennessee family. (Hint: it wasn't just flashy outfits and huge tracts of land.) She wasn't famous for being famous (or infamous). She got the joke but ensured everyone laughed together.

For a musician, sometimes a song says it best. The Carter family reworked a Christian hymn into a funeral hymn that has become a staple of the country music anthology:

I was standin' by the window
On one cold and cloudy day
And I saw the hearse come rollin'
For to carry my mother away

Splinter-free toilet paper didn't exist until the 1930's

Paper has been utilized for purposes of hygiene since the 6th Century, in China. It became a mass-produced product in the 14th Century.
Modern toilet paper, for commercial use, started in the 19th Century and a patent for dispensers, that could hold rolls, was made in 1883.
The rolled toilet paper that we use today, which is perforated, was created in the 1880's. Toilet paper varies immensely; size, roughness, weight, resistance, residues, water-absorption, etc.
The bigger companies invest time and money in surveys to figure out which requirements sell best. This can lead to the adding of aloe in the paper, for a softer feeling paper.
Northern Issue, in 1935, began to advertise toilet paper that was "splinter free." Up until this point, it was common to have splinters in toilet roll, due to the production techniques used. St. Andrew's Paper Mill, in the UK, launched 2-ply paper in 1942.

NJ Transit Toilet News

Ring flushed down New Jersey train toilet returned to owner

A New Jersey woman who accidentally flushed her wedding ring down a train toilet was reunited with the precious object thanks to NJ Transit employees.
Julie Angelicola said she had just left the bathroom aboard an NJ Transit train when she realized her wedding ring was missing.
"So I'm kind of meticulously getting all of this soap off of my hands with toilet paper and literally going finger by finger, and crumpling it all up, trying to do it quickly - threw it in the toilet, flushed the toilet, went back to my seat," Angelicola told WPVI-TV.
She reported the ring's loss to NJ Transit, which took the train out of service.
Employees put the train up on jacks, removed the toilet tank and opened it up to discover Angelicola's ring on top.
The ring was returned to Angelicola on Monday at a NJ Transit Customer Service Center.

Niche YouTube Channel of the Week

Tonight's feature is a YouTube channel called Millennial Farmer. Zach Johnson is a 5th generation family farmer from West Central Minnesota. He promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences on the family farm. At its core, the channel shows where our food comes from and what it takes to produce it.

He's been posting videos on YouTube for 10 years and has accumulated 1.15 million subscribers. His channel shows the work of the farm as the seasons change, from planting through harvest. They primarily grow soybeans and corn.

The channel provides a first-person insight to running a farm.

The channel shows new equipment, repairs and getting stuck in the field. It shows the push of the harvest, including the challenges of weather and darkness. It also is unafraid to tackle business and regulatory factors - or anything else that impacts running a farm. It isn't hysterical but rather pragmatic and descriptive. They primarily run John Deere equipment.

Lots of problem solving.

The channel also shows the family involvement and raising kids on a working farm. It restores your faith in the heartland and is a window to what it takes to be a farmer.

Videos routinely get several hundred thousand views and periodically get millions. Lots of interweb farming interest out there!

I did a trial run yesterday because I needed to make sure the play list worked. I have a newer teacher on Saturday and giving her a playlist where she has to really find the beats for 8 counts would be mean. Anyway, everyone loved it. No issues with Jolene. I love that song - Miley Cyrus does an incredible cover of it, by the way. The tear jerker moment is “I Will Always Love You”. I used it for stretch, so I could use the original and not a remix.

Rick's tribute to Dolly is very good. I never realized how skilled she was playing an acoustic guitar. And the song she wrote and performed for Johnny Carson was fantastic. What a talented lady she was.

about 2012 most of that colored stuff went away. Paper towels with printing on it, patterned TP, and the rest. I think it was a form of shrinkflation.
I stopped buying it because I shopped at really cheap stores, but I suspect it all dried up about then.

Eh...it's supposed to be one of Hitchcock's best. Not to me. It seems very deliberatly slow to build. Frustratingly so. I like Stewart and Novak, however. Never had a fear of heights, so it's somewhat distracting.

I have a novelty TP dispenser. It’s a music box but triggered by pulling toilet paper off. Unfortunately modern toilet paper is thinner than when this thing was built and the cardboard tubes are thinner, too. So the paper isn’t strong enough to wind the music box and the tube isn’t circular enough to let the music play when the springs tighten.

I fell and I couldn't get up! Spent the night on the floor, and the next 6 days in a hospital. Hurt my right knee, but nothing broken or torn.

I'll be getting in-home physical therapy for an unknown period of time.

Hospital: First time I ever had a young woman hold my junk to enable me urinate. I was humiliated and mortified the first time. But then the experience became as familiar and routine as tooth brushing. Both of us bored.

I spent a night on the floor because of an unlikely series of cascading events-- same way most disasters occur. I put two devices on chargers in the kitchen at the same time, 40 feet from my bed. One was a Life Alert-tyoe emergency fall alarm; the other was my cell phone-- while my son was out-of-town. So I was alone.

I had a lot of pain in my face. This pretty nurse was walking towards me and took one look at me, and then she started crying, I mean instant waterworks. I laugh about it now, but I wondered if maybe she was new or something. I’m pretty sure I couldn’t do their job

158 People don't always get up from a fall. I knew a fellow named Gary Burgett, who co-owned the Mason & Hamlin Piano Company. His brother ran the factory in MA, Gary ran the tech end in SF area. He had become very wealthy from inventing the PianoDisc function that so many pianos come with. Started with cassette in the 70s, moved to CD, then digital.
Alone in his big house, he fell down the grand staircase and didn't get up. Found there next day. He was a very nice guy, despite being a genius. He was the best piano player I ever heard.

I can't now, but that is the major goal the physical therapist & I will be aiming toward.

I have multiple problems-- severe arthritis, which showed on the x-rays; terrible stenosis (lower back pain); loss of muscle mass.

So this is going to be a project. I intend to get my regular shower modified into a walk-in shower. (I used to laugh at those ads too.) I intend to put in ramps, to help get over steps I have to climb to enter the house.

For years I've been saying that I'll put up with physical disabilities, as long as i don't have mental ones. Too glib. I may have tempted fate.

I did it. Last Thursday. My foot slipped on the bottom stair coming out of the camper. Went over the edge of the stair, backward, smacked my ass on the ground and my head on the wheel hub. Cut a 2" long gash in the back of my head, which bled like an SOB.

When the EMTs showed up (DH freaked and called), they asked if I lost consciousness. DH informed them that I swore a blue streak the entire time, so, no.

I got up. I put the washcloth on my head cut. I cursed some more. They still took me in the ambulance to the ER, where I got 5 staples.

Now the damned things are itchy, but I need to get them out on Friday.

So, yeah. Curse if it helps, and I think it does.

Although I'd read about them (including the aforementioned graffitum), I had never encountered pay toilets — didn't seem to exist in our neck of the woods — until the road trip Dad, my older brother, and I took to the NY World's Fair in '64. Somewhere along the road "back east," I went into a restroom and there was a long, long row of pay toilets. I'd read that there was usually a free one at the far end, and sure enough there was, maintained about as poorly as you'd expect. Yuck. Didn't use it.

265 Several years back, I was going up a brick staircase to the back door at Mom's house, carrying a basket of laundry. Stairs I'd climbed hundreds of times. Near the top of the six stairs, one foot slipped.

It's amazing how fast the mind can run at times. I contemplated falling on the basket somehow, but couldn't maneuver it in time, so I dropped it on the landing. I remember being in mid-air and realizing there was absolutely nothing I could do to catch myself or alter my trajectory. I chose trying to relax and landing as flat on my back as I could. That sorta worked.

When my skull hit, there was an evil-sounding crackle, but fortunately it was some soft-edged rock around the shrubbery, which gave way rather than cracking my skull. The brick scraping down my leg hurt but was pretty superficial and healed up soon.

As I lay there looking up at the night sky, I realized Mom was abed at the other end of the house, and MiladyJo was in the kitchen, out of earshot. I had no choice but to turn over, and crawl back up the stairs. Grateful to have got off relatively easy.

It was a lesson in being older, fer surely.

Only made it downstairs with the help of a friend, ex football player, who let me drape my arm over his shoulder while he helped me hop down the. Stairs one legged.

Yeah, I've got butterflies, but we aren't that far out in the woods. 15 minutes to a fully staffed Fire Station with EMTs. Half an hour to a fully staffed hospital. It seems like the boonies, but we considered that when we moved due to our ages and relative frailties.

In a pinch, we can helicopter to Anchorage in 15 minutes.

I have a fondness for the writing called "philosophy", or "Love of Wisdom". Because that is a history of analytics.

To "analyze" is to "take apart". But things do not exist in our world taken apart. Therefore, for my one method I have to shift between a type of holism and analytics, but never trusting too much in the reduction of analysis.

All my reading of philosophy is putting writing through a filter of "How would this be true to me? In what sense can I verify the chain of rationale given?" or at least "In what sense would I integrate these principles into my way of seeing the world?"

That gets a bit...complicated. It's due to the tidal field of the Moon (and Sun, too, but the Moon is the dominant effect). The tidal field is the *gradients* in the gravitational field, the difference between the acceleration or g-field over a distance of interest. The tidal field of the inverse square Netwonian field of a spherical mass goes as the inverse cube of the distance, and is stretching in the radial direction, but compressive in the tangential directions.

Imagine a plastic body immersed in the field. Relative to its own center of mass, it gets stretched a bit in the radial direction, and squashed in the other two directions.

This produces two "tidal bulges" along the radial center line. This is what causes the tides. As the earth spins under the Moon, those tidal bulges, aligned with the Moon, move across the surface.

Now, because of friction, those tidal bulges pulled up by the Moon's tidal field can't slip under the earth perfectly, so they get dragged along and lead the Moon a little bit. Thus, friction causes the tidal bulge line to get a little ahead of the Moon.

The difference in mass distribution of the earth causes a "torqueing" of the Moon's orbit, and slowly throws into a higher orbit. The Moon thus is receding.

This also causes a counter torque that slows the earth down. This is required from conservation of angular momentum. As the earth slows down, it loses rotational kinetic energy. Some of that goes to heat due to the friction and the rest goes to the Moon's own orbital energy.

This is thus a type of "spin-orbit" coupling due to the tidal forces.

The tidal field of the Moon (and Sun) are also responsible for precession of the earth's spin axis by another mechanism. This normal torque is caused by the tidal field acting on the "spare tire", the earth's equatorial bulge caused by its rotation.

There is some rather complex physics in the tidal field.

And Isaac Newton first worked all that out.

323 Well, the google Pixel 6a phone with Graphene OS loaded on it seems to work OK. I put my SIM card into it, and it found the network, and the network seems to accept it. Wifi works. I was able to carry on a text message convo with a friend this evening. I am not much on smartphone experience, but the OS does not seem at all clunky.

That's why Newton is perhaps the smartest man who ever lived. Einstein himself said so, remarking he stood on the shoulders of giants, and Newton was one big giant.

Newton's IQ was likely about 190, six standard deviations above the norm. Shakespeare was probably up there as well. This is not to diss a lot of the other greats, but Newton probably takes the cake. 5 and 6 sigma people, all of them.

JQ, go to timeanddate.com and plug in the nearest town to you, and go to the moonrise page. An eclipse link will be there as well, and you can get the timings.

Now, if you want to be really accurate for exact location, go here:
"www.timeanddate.com/moon/@Lat,Long", where Lat and Long are your coordinates in decimal. W long is negative, so make sure the minus sign is there.

Timeanddate uses topocentric coordinates with the WGS84 ellipsoid, and is dead accurate with the timing.

I text with BFF each morning, and find it's easiest to delete the daily convos to preserve storage.

It does not take into account local topography, of course, just a tangent plane on the surface where those coordinates are. So any hills, hollers and mountains and valleys are not taken into account.

I think the sim card doesn't have the capacity to do it.
That's why I went to a smart phone. I deleted most of the apps and it the three years I've had it used Apple store (you have to use Apple store to download anything Free or not) three times.
Can't bring myself to accommodate them.

But it will spoil you. Texts, email, good camera, and the contacts -
I've got 5#s for several places with notes. That ability turned me.
And you can view the web. Or interact. It's difficult.
But in a pinch I've bought and sold things.

It's like Pixy said IOS is bullet proof with apple slop on top.
I bought an 11 used three year ago and it's still going strong.
For less than 300.

But it got me thinking, especially in light of my current situation (been busy lately)...

Why is that an unalloyed Good? Implied in that position is the assumption that I actually have the time to sit down and fiddle with a thing that's broken. Diagnosis, buying parts, farmer-rigging whatever parts I can't buy, then hoping it works and there isn't something else wrong with it as well.

I don't have that time these days. If something i need breaks, my options are "get another one" or "do without".

Repairing your own stuff is a bit of a luxury. And the rise of Disposable Culture of cheap things that aren't worth fixing when they break has masked the fact that the dollar is worth far less than it used to be. If anyone tried to "make things like they used to", they'd cost 10x as much and no one could have them at all except the very wealthy who wouldn't waste their time on fixing broken things because they have to.
