The Dear Wife and I visited the local county fair today.
One of the vendors was selling a deep fried curly seasoned potato for $10. Ten f***ing dollars!! For one big potato. What has the world come to? On a happier note, a group of gals from our HS were manning (womaning?) a booth promoting Turning Point USA and were all up on what happened to Charlie Kirk. They were lovely, well-spoken young ladies - just delightful. One of them told me they have chapters in most of the high schools in TN. Posted by: Worse than dating, and dating is hell at August 21, 2026 11:19 PM (TbWk/) --- The best way to find a job is to use human social networks. Not online stuff, but people you know, who know people, and so on. That's how stuff gets done. You know a guy at church who knows a guy who knows a nice lady. I'm a grandfather, so I can't claim to be hip and current, but my kids are using it. You network with people in a given career field and get a sense of who is hiring and what they need. The employer puts obstacles because they don't want to have to fire someone right after hiring. They want to know if this person will really work and at this point, a lot of the traditional filters (like college degrees) have been completely corrupted. But if the guy doing the hiring is told "This person can do it" from someone they trust, that's different. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at August 21, 2026 11:26 PM (ZOv7s) 191

When I lost my job decades ago, my father gave me a book (What Color Is Your Parachute) that was the usual self-help garbage, but it contained the idea that one way to find a job you want is to look at companies you want to work for locally and just drop in. Ask about what they do, show interest in the operation, talk with other employees, and let it be known that you admire their work and would like to be part of their team.
It may turn out that they are expanding, or have been thinking of adding a position, and someone who is so geeked about working for the to stop in is naturally going to get a closer look. Well, I got all the damned black paint off the dune buggy body tube. Wore out about 60 razor blades and a dozen sticky discs for the D/A sander. Interior is all stripped down to the gel coat. Exterior needs a lot of high-build primer sanded off, but that is easy to do.
Got new fiberglass laid up in the repaired corners, and the resin set up just fine. When you stop to think about it, fiberglass is amazing shit. A can of gooey syrup, plus some floppy fabric, plus "magic", and you have a solid piece with real structural strength. And I have most of a quart of DP 40 non-sanding epoxy primer-sealer, and the corresponding hardener. Enough to do this puppy; makes a surface that paint sticks to like glue, and prevents any under-colors from bleeding through. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 21, 2026 11:44 PM (1z8ji) 202
When I applied for my first postdoc, the researcher I wanted to work with saw my PhD professor as a rival, and looked askance at his recommendations for me. But this same researcher had worked with my Ms professor (I got both Ms and PhD for reasons), and that was what got me the in. His recommendations (my Ms professor’s) were gold. I was worth taking on. This lead eventually to a NRL postdoc, and that got me the job offer at my university, as well as my work and winning personality, good looks, etc. No, it was the NRL cachet, and maybe my work.

Thank you for the ONT.
Farm kids are different because we are feral. No one knew where we were or asked til sunset. There were always farm cars to learn to drive at age 12yrs. My friend and I "waterskied" with her 13yr old bro driving through woods on a farm road in our swimsuits, hanging onto the luggage rack and ducking for limbs vs losing heads. Set fire to stuff did get us noticed & it was never my fault at a friend's house from smoking cigs, where her brother put the fires out. In once case hay near her Dad's shop. Another time friends set her mother's car on fire at a church thing (cigs). Again, not my fault and man was her father mad (you could see the trunk) and the backseat was springs. You had to watch the little siblings. One thought our goat's poop was Milk Duds and we stopped him from tasting. Never bored and I told my sons and tell our grands do not say the word, "bored," around me as it does not exist. I loved the blackhead removal meme and surely feel bad about it. Tired from grand girl's first bday party with her chimp siblings. She's one tough baby who knows how to strong arm them when they mess with her. Ate her entire slice of cake and may explode. Good morning!
Regarding the "Biden Roofied?" post..... My contention was that Biden's Deep State handlers did the opposite before that debate...they WITHHELD Joe's daily drug cocktail so he would perform as poorly as he did. What else can explain the unusual timing of the debate? They knew that Joe was deteriorating much faster than they planned for, and they had to get him out ASAP. They probably also were hoping that any momentum Trump gained from the debate would be forgotten over the summer. Ooops. Posted by: Midnight Rambler at August 22, 2026 01:58 AM (C1H7N) 313

The way a lot of this works is with satellite and radar data. They break the whole area up into a grid of some size depending on the resolution and sort of "estimate" all the variables in that grid. They're getting better and better and that, but the local variation can still be well outside of that. The stuff they can measure with satellites is getting unbelievable. Like soil moisture, even. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at August 22, 2026 02:56 AM (w6EFb) 357
Here's a hyperlocal precipitation thingy: https://precip.ai/ Now, they'll try to sell you a subscription after so long, but I've noticed "side channels" that can get you into that that will show you some data the main site wants to charge for. Anyway, that's the latest and greatest thing to get hyperlocal rainfall estimates from all the satellite and radar data. It's some complex data processing. Anyway, see how that compares to what you actually measure. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at August 22, 2026 02:58 AM (w6EFb) 358

Thanks Braenyard. I can easily get all the current data like this, and forecast 6 ways to Sunday. What I'm talking about is *historical* daily data, like what was the dew point and barometric pressure at, say GSP, back on Aug 22, 1967. The standard daily records just track temp, hi low and avg, rainfall, and the heating and cooling degree-days counts. All the other stuff is recorded and stored somewhere, they just don't make it easily available. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at August 22, 2026 03:20 AM (w6EFb) 365
I wouldn't put it past them to fake it. And of course, all the social taboo around Moon Landing Skepticism would do all the work for them of making all Right-Thinking People very aggressively gullible. Putting the skeptics into a Boy Who Cried Wolf kind of position.

106 is S.F.'s record high (2017) which i was here for. It was hottt (but dry) but the worst part was that it was in the upper 60's that night (and the night before) so it never cooled off. It was awful.

Hi, Dark Lixtiquatal!
It *usually* cools into the sixties here at night (sometimes low 70s) but dang it, it's still ~90F outside! Ugh. Sucks. Pacific time. Posted by: JQ at August 22, 2026 03:28 AM (rdVOm) 368
"Lunarmodule5" is a Youtube channel that has the unedited full mission audio of every Apollo mission there was, and many others. Here's the playlist for Apollo 11: https://t.ly/G-eSa Now, these are "accelerated" in the sense that periods of silence are edited out, but this is the audio of the whole damned mission from the pre-launch press conference to splashdown and beyond. Note how long, how many hours this adds up to. And I've listened to these at length. Now, just imagine what it would require to fake all that. Every little problem, every little hiccup, and all the little surprises of the whole mission. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at August 22, 2026 03:35 AM (w6EFb) 369

There's even audio there of Gunther Wendt calling off the checklist for the hatch closing of Apollo 11. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at August 22, 2026 03:36 AM (w6EFb) 371
I have my own weather station. Forecasts here are for Wasilla, which is half an hour away, along the inlet, so the weather is quite varied. Anchorage is across the inlet, so that's not a good source, either. We have a very specific microclimate, good for the garden, good for lots of snow in the winter, not like Wasilla or Anchorage.
Plus the weather assholes are clueless. Posted by: tcn in AK at August 22, 2026 03:39 AM (ur4t4) 372
And the Russians were listening to the telemetry, and tracking every bit of every Apollo flight. They knew every aspect of our missions in real time. And we did there's as well. If we had faked anything, the Russians would've had a propaganda coup right there to announce to the world. What did they do? They congratulated us on our successful landing. >>>All the other stuff is recorded and stored somewhere, they just don't make it easily available.
Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley --- Good luck with that. As I understand it they've been going back and 'correcting' the data. You'll have to find a very independent source. Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at August 22, 2026 03:49 AM (Cq/ve) 377
