Learn something new every day.
According to a pious fiction that was very popular in the Middle Ages, Julian was of noble birth and while hunting one day, was reproached by a hart for hunting him and told that he would one day kill his mother and father. He was richly rewarded for his services by a king and married a widow. While he was away his mother and father arrived at his castle seeking him; When his wife realized who they were, she put them up for the night in the master's bed room. When Julian returned unexpectedly later that night and saw a man and a woman in his bed, he suspected the worst and killed them both. When his wife returned from church and he found he had killed his parents, he was overcome with remorse and fled the castle, resolved to do a fitting penance. He was joined by his wife and they built an inn for travelers near a wide river, and a hospital for the poor. He was forgiven for his crime when he gave help to a leper in his own bed; the leper turned out to be a messenger from God who had been sent to test him. He is the patron of hotel keepers, travelers, and boatmen. His feast day is February 12th. Posted by: rickb223 at August 27, 2026 09:48 AM (g9NYF) 70

I usually don't like the faces in paintings of this time and place, circa 1500 Italy. Too wooden and lacking expression. Di Credi typically has that but not this one. The faces are still, as if caught in a photo, but not wooden and each figure has its own expression. The calm, contemplative look on the figure on the right especially catches my attention.
The rich colors and realistic detail of the clothing is attractive but doesn't detract from the holy significance of the scene. Not something I would hang but I would like to understand how those colors were created. Posted by: JTB at August 27, 2026 09:49 AM (yTvNw) Posted by: red speck at August 27, 2026 09:49 AM (Ve/HL) 80

Atlantic touting AfD?
"Imagine that it’s october 2026, and one of Germany’s 16 federal states has come under the control of a far-right government for the first time since the Nazi era. With an absolute majority in the state Parliament and one of its own installed as state premier, the Alternative for Germany, or AfD, quickly begins implementing its agenda. The interior minister announces an emergency remigration program: abolishing asylum, revoking the residence permit of any foreigner convicted of a crime, pledging to review all naturalization decisions made during this century, and incarcerating those designated for deportation. The government stops classifying Ukrainians as war refugees and ends their social benefits. European Union flags disappear from public buildings. The mainstream press is shunned in favor of influencers aligned with the party’s ideology. The government authorizes vigilante groups to act as an auxiliary police force in regions with high crime rates." https://archive.is/Lt5Kp Posted by: Oglebay at August 27, 2026 10:07 AM (2ap+5) 135

The Virgin and Child with St Julian and St Nicholas of Myra
Lorenzo di Credi It's impressive (to me) because it's a very old 1490–1494 painting for the church of Santa Maria Maddalena dei Pazzi; oil on wood (panel), and almost 5 & a half ft square. But I had no idea who Saint Julian and Saint Nicholas of Myra were/are. Saint Julian, according to myth, unwittingly fulfilled a pagan prophecy by killing his own parents, then spent the rest of his life dedicated to penance. He's the patron saint of travelers, innkeepers, ferrymen, and pilgrims. Saint Nicholas of Myra (The Wonderworker) was a 4th-century Christian bishop from Myra (Turkey) and his historical legacy eventually inspired the modern myth of Santa Claus. He has the bishop's vestments and 3 gold balls (or purses of gold) at his feet. The gold is related to his most famous charitable act, saving three poor daughters from a life of destitution or prostitution by anonymously throwing bags of gold through their window to provide for their wedding dowries. He's the patron saint of children, sailors, merchants, unmarried girls, and pawnbrokers. Wouldn't hang the painting but it's another interesting lesson. Now, that I think about it... I believe the ugliness of Renaissance Baby Jesus portraits comes from the attempt to give the Infant Jesus - the look of complex thought and emotions that the Son of God would/should possess. Babies faces are unlined and their expressions direct and simple. Not much to work with if portrayed realistically. So, the painted Christ Child gets an adult face. Bulg, I too am glad I no longer have hangovers. Or any kind of headaches recently. Years before I began drinking I would get a kind of mini-migraine over my left eye; and hangovers would settle right there as well. I stopped drinking, but the mini-graines continued for about ten years despite an Rx for them. Then, one day, I realized I hadn't had to take the Rx for months.
