  • "Whistleblower" Arturo Béjar leads testimony in landmark trial against Meta. (NPR)
"At the end of the day, it was the company culture that Mark had created that made it so that it was practically impossible to deliver features that addressed the wellbeing and safety issues that we've been talking about," he said.
Well, that sounds serious. What wellbeing and safety issues are we talking about?

    Grooming? Sex trafficking? Drugs?
But he said efforts to introduce or change features to effectively address those risks were difficult to implement. Instead, Béjar testified, at almost every turn the company chose policies that boosted usership and revenue over safety. Safety was "not a meaningful priority," he said.
Yes, but what safety? What are the actual concerns here?
He called features like video autoplay, "like" counters and infinite scroll "inherently unsafe for teenagers."
This is why Meta is facing a fine of $1.4 trillion.

12 Oh, we found out why the Feds are looking into Swalwell. Normally a sexual crime would be a state matter, so 'Rons speculated about what made it a Federal case, and I didn't see anyone guess this: according to RedState, the search warrant was issued under 18 U.S.C. squiggly 242, using gov't authority to deprive another of civil rights.

A specific example that the article cited as potentially relevant is Waterbury CT mayor Philip Giordano, who was convicted under that statute for using his office and connections to coerce silence from two girls he had abused. Swalwell is certainly full enough of himself that I can picture him pulling a stunt like that, as if he would 'deserve' to get away with it. It's credible as heck.

I was reading it on a different device, let's see if I can get a link for you...

13 Morning Horde. It’s funny how our preconceived notion that Zuck is autonomous evil impacts the reporting of the Meta trial. Have any witnesses ever been asked if they chose to control their kids access to an unregulated open sewer of social perversion?

I’m cheering against Facebook because they have built the creepiest most profitable sleaze machine ever, yet all it took was parents to exercise control over their kids viewing and engagement. Not easy but most worthwhile things aren’t.

304 Slipped on the bottom stair to the camper, fell backwards along the stair and whacked my head on the wheel hub. Bled like a SOB. Ended up in ambulance, to the hospital, got a CT scan to check for damage, got five staples, and one hell of a headache.

When he says this:

If a human can see the information, that means there is a way the information can be parsed [by AI].

and this:

Besides, if an effective obfuscation method somehow gains widespread use, then a much higher priority will be placed on breaking it, eventually rendering it useless.

I mean, yes? But that is true of ... everything, maybe? The attitude seems defeatist. Maybe I am missing something.

39 Nrg. Mornin'.

Y'know what? I remember teenagers being addicted to:
- television
- radio
- alcohol (though they shouldn't have been yet)
- cigarettes (though they shouldn't have been yet)
- video games (remember the huge moral panic about those in the 80's?)
- sex (willfully oblivious parents are willfully oblivious!)
- various other things over time.

Maybe the problem isn't Facebook's features of "like", "autoplay", and "infinite scroll". Maybe the problem is teenagers getting fixated on things, and that sounds like something parents or friends can help with.

Or y'know, mentally maturing by having to actually take on the world and survive will help with that too.

How does the EU prove "harm" that's specific to Meta's Facebook features?

If Facebook didn't have any money to raid, would the EU still be going after them?

They [these guidelines] must be taken into account by retailers and distributors of disposable barbecues in ensuring they do not supply products that they know or ought to know to be dangerous....

To be considered safe under GPSR, a product must not present any risk or only the minimum risks compatible with the product’s use, considered to be acceptable and consistent with a high level of protection for the safety and health of persons, under normal or reasonably foreseeable conditions of use.

Before placing a product on the market, producers must ensure that it is safe. This means, under normal or reasonably foreseeable conditions of use, the product does not present any risk or presents only the minimum risk compatible with the product’s use, and which is considered acceptable and consistent with a high level of protection of health and safety.

89 These are single-use grills. Cook, cool, throw 'em away.

Dafuq? Get a camping grill and use it a ton of times. Oh no, I might have to clean it, the horror! Lazy ass ... { stopping now before I go on a rant that will blister the paint }

96 You can buy disposable grills at Walmart for $5. They are perfect for drunken picnics where you leave your garbage everywhere when you leave.

Looks like you can get them on Amazon for around $15-$20 each.

I'd prefer a standard Weber grill, even though I don't use it very often.

104 Last week, the government imposed a temporary ban on the sale of single-use barbecues following a prolonged period of hot, dry weather and a spate of wildfires across the UK.

So weather is the new Covid.

After 11 years as a sports columnist at the Seattle Times, I have decided to resign. It was entirely my choice, and it was not an easy one. The impetus was the Times declining to run a column I wrote from the perspective of two female student athletes who were opposed to competing against biological males. It was one of several pieces of mine that had been spiked, and I no longer felt like I could properly do my job as a columnist. I lay out the situation in greater detail in the link below, but I want to say that I enjoyed my time with the paper, find the talent there to be immense, and have no animosity toward anyone who works there. It was just time for a change.
