I would love to have a RC WWII tank, but can't see the expense for a few hours of entertainment. A plane would be nice but the expense for a few minutes unti it crashed.

Drones....
I fly drones. Periodically. For fun. Not for perving on neighbors. Mostly to check the property after storms and flooding. Like this: https://ibb.co/MDTsYq9g Posted by: Martini Farmer at August 22, 2026 05:37 PM (2Cry5) 9

I'm about 2/3rds through finishing this gigantic Galactus print.
Some of the bigger parts take upwards of 8hrs to print. When it's done it will stand over 30 inches high and weigh about 10 lbs. Posted by: Thomas Bender at August 22, 2026 05:44 PM (XV/Pl) 12
Never have been into radio control things. I had a scale model race car, a "Shark," many many years ago, and I think it was self-powered with batteries, but I'm not sure.
I guess it's just that, when I had a patio as a kid, we didn't have the money and the tech wasn't there yet. And since then I've never had a smooth surface to run an RC model on -- indoor carpet would be a problem, I'd think. Why is the Porsche 959 such a special RC model? is it merely that it's rare? In pipe smoking news, there is no news. I haven't bought anything new. Oh, yes, there is the vintage amber-colored glass ashtray I got on eBay, and I fastened a cork in the middle to tap my pipes out on.
I thought of going out to the pipe shop this morning, but got a late start and decided I can go next weekend. For sure I don't need any new tobaccos or pipes. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 22, 2026 05:48 PM (wzUl9) 16

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 22, 2026 05:45 PM *** Yes. Few were made and it was never re-issued. It was also sophisticated for its time. Many were used and abused, so few remain in good condition. The connection to the real world Porsche 959 Dakar racer also helps. Posted by: TRex - dakar dino at August 22, 2026 05:49 PM (cCn4/) 17
And further developing the Movie Vault app, I discovered there is a free gitub api with historical Oscar data, so I'm adding a research module to the app.
You'll be able to do searches and lookups on Oscar data. I'm trying to figure out how I can leverage it to enhance the app, perhaps look up a year and it will show you the movies for a particular year and tell you if they are in your collection or not. Anyways, it's worth pondering over a nice bourbon and some sour patch gummies. Posted by: Thomas Bender at August 22, 2026 05:49 PM (XV/Pl) 18
Oh, I see; the Porsche 959 RC model is from 1986-1992, and would be hard to find in decent condition.

I've been making an effort to get fully moved in to the house so I can do some of this hobby stuff that I once did. I mean, the reason I bought the house with the big yard is so I could put some HF antennas.
The main antennas will have to wait, but I've ginned up some a design for a trap vertical and I've got a slingshot so I can get it over the branches of one of the trees. So, soon. The thing is, I've found every radio except one. It's an Elecraft KX3 that, due to the way things worked out, I haven't ever used. I sure hope I find it. Nonexistent towns or place names were included in maps, to of course verify copyright violations. "Gotcha!"
Before internet and Goolag Erf and satellite imagery, USGS topo maps were the only way to really check remote places out. They were a lot of fun. You wrote to one address for maps east of the Mississippi and a different address for maps west of the Mississippi. You could spend a lot of time poring over the contours, areas of interest, roads and mines, all sorts of interesting data. Benchmarks and survey marks, springs, etc. Learning how to do the "accordion fold" was a thing on the trail, or cutting it down to size and getting it laminated. I used to frequent a bar in my youth that used radio controlled cars to deliver shots. Someone built a little wooden shot glass holder where the spoiler used to be. The bar, itself was behemouth horseshoe. The bartender made a performance out of it. If someone bought the bar a round, he'd load up the radio controlled cars, then climb up into one of those raised Lifeguard chairs with the controls and begin delivery down the entire bar.
It was a great sales gimmick since everyone wanted to see the performance. There was an old traffic light at the end of the bar (like at drag races) that would count down to the green light at the bottom....and everyone cheered. Posted by: Orson at August 22, 2026 06:21 PM (dIske) 46
Wolfus, there are fewer surviving boy toys because boys are hard on their toys. I have my dollhouse from childhood, and my grandkids have been free to play with it because I can replace any piece of furniture on eBay for around $5. Model trucks from the same manufacturer (Renwal) run at $65 and $70. There are so few in good condition.

My mother kept a slew of them, but I didn't take them with me when I cleaned out her apartment after she passed on. She kept the plush Cecil the Seasick Sea Serpent that I had as a boy; had him sitting on a chair in her bedroom. I could have scooped him up. Unlike he Western heroes, he wouldn't have used up any storage space at all. Darn. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 22, 2026 06:26 PM (wzUl9) 50

Posted by: Wenda at August 22, 2026 *** Yes, I had a red plastic Eldon pickup truck that was a pretty good size. Used it to haul unshelled peanuts from one room of the apartment to another. It probably did see some hard use from me and my brother, who was even tougher on his toys. Renwal used to make doll houses? I remember them specializing in the see-through plastic assembly kits like atomic subs with clear plastic for half the hull, so you could see all the compartments inside, and also the famous Visible Man and Woman kits.
