Wednesday Night ONT - August 19, 2026 [TRex]

20260816-LightHouseEclipseAlbertDros.jpg

Good evening Horde! The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. The bar is open and (mostly) re-stocked. Step up and place your order. (No Bud Light per Management.)

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and join the fun. Good will offerings of amusing puns are encouraged. Pants are optional. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. If you're a troll, go away.

This is a Tucker, Candace, Megyn, and Bill Kristol free zone. Please.

Finders Keepers?

Builders unearth €9m gold stash sealed in walls of Belgian property

20260817-BelgiumGold.jpg

Builders renovating a house in Belgium have discovered a stash of gold reportedly worth €9m (£7.6m) sealed into the walls of its cellar.

The construction workers stumbled across the hidden trove of gold bars and coins while drilling to lay new sewage pipes in the property in east Flanders earlier this week, local media report.

The discovery has sparked interest in who might get to keep the hoard - with both the builders and the local charity that owns the site having a chance of claiming it.

After launching an investigation, police warned people against attending the site to search for more treasure, saying the house was "turned upside down" and all the gold had been moved to a secure location.

The rightful owner has five years to claim the hoard under Belgian law - though the local prosecutor, who has launched an investigation, said it was not yet known who this might be.

If no one comes forward, civil law states that hidden treasure on someone else's property be divided between the finder and the property's owner.

Fwiw, that's about USD$10.42 million.

Mandatory Metallica

Life is full of pivot points. They make you wonder "what might have been different?" For Metallica, how would the band have evolved with Dave Mustaine if he wasn't excused in 1983? What music could have emerged if Cliff Burton had survived the bus crash in 1986? The handling of Jason Newsted ranks up there as well. What might have been?

Jason is still playing music. If you're a Jason fan and like your music on the heavier side, you'll enjoy this clip:

Not the Art Thread but...

This is the type of high quality educational content I appreciate from YouTube:

***

Niche YouTube Channel of the Week

Tonight's feature is a YouTube channel from Alec Steele. The self-named channel features Alec who is a British blacksmith. I'm pretty sure he's a full time YouTuber at this point because his content is mostly about his metal working projects. He's a modern blacksmith, so he uses modern machinery but a lot of it boils down to swinging a hammer or using a machine to shape and forge metal. He knows and respects the history and has several videos to prove it.

Alec's recent project is restoring a 1958 Massey Clearspace Power Hammer that he has dreamed about since age 11. It weighs over 5 tons. I am not a metalworking expert but big machines that smash hot metal sound interesting. Apparently, I'm not the only one. Alec's channel has 3.19 million subscribers. That's right kids - over three million people are subscribed to a YouTube channel to watch a modern blacksmith's passion projects. Amazing.

Alec tells a story well, he has a sense of humor and his enthusiasm is infectious. No clickbait, no fancy graphics, no music - just a guy, his wife and anyone else he can convince to help bend and move metal. He's been posting YouTube videos for 15 years.

I struggled to pick a representative video. He's made knives, swords, springs, saws, nails, hammers, arrowheads and rings (jewelry). The recent string of Power Hammer restoration videos are good watching, but the video with the highest view count by far is this one:

Difficult to call it an unknown channel but it absolutely qualifies as a niche channel. It is exactly the type of content that could not survive elsewhere but thrives on a narrowcasting internet platform.

Pittsburgh Scanner

Only one Pittsburgh scanner entry tonight. Most recent posts have been more tragic than humorous and we're only here for funsies.

ZZ Top for the big ONT finish:

RIP Frank Beard and Dusty Hill.

Haven't seen this mentioned widely on AoS, so thought it was worth including:

Been a busy run for the grim reaper lately. You might have missed Bill Rasmussen (ESPN founder) and Charlie Slater (racer and former owner of IMSA).

Ha. I was once inspecting a gas station renovation and found the plumbing contractor had mistakenly run the premium line to the regular pump, and vice versa to the premium pump on one of the two islands. Aside from performance differences in vehicles, it would have royally messed up the inventory tracking.

We fixed it by swapping signage on the two pumps.

Tomorrow we're going to are going to visit the sites where Mrs ARiK's Japanese Grandfather was held during part of WWII. Should be interestink!

We stopped at a Buc-ee's in Springfield, Mo. It was almost a religious experience! I bought a 3Meat sandwich, wife just had a bbq beef I think. Also a bag of beaver chips? bites ? I forget. Big sodas. Caramel popcorn. Toasted? Almonds. $45!

Younger son was working in Little Rock for a few days so he came and had dinner with us last night in Greenbrier, Arkansas. That was fun! He flew back to our home in Calif today so we'll see how the house is doing.I highly recommend Millers Outpost RV park there. Owner Beth is a cutie!

Oooo ooooo I know this one. That, my friend, is a Ground Rod. It's found throughout urban areas. In the center of it, you can just barely make out a metal spike. They push a steel rod deep into the ground.

What's it for? Simple, to disperse excess electricity (lightning) to take it away from the multiple buildings that would be in the area. But, it also serves to take away electricity from downed wires as well. Not to mention to protect electronics from power surges.

Now you know.

One of the funniest stories I heard in my life involved the Lighthouse.

During an interview I listened to (IIRC) featuring one of those Golden Age of Comedy writers from the 50s/60s, they mentioned that one day they were with a famous comedian at the time - Dom DeLouise? - walking past the Lighthouse building in the evening. It was in the East 50s in NYC at the time. Anyway, as they were walking past the building DeLouise looked up and saw that all the lights were off. He said 'ah, the workers are burning the midnight oil up there, I see.'

Top photo with the Bonnie Taylor song are perfection. Great song! Seemed to be a lovely lady, married to her man for 52yrs.

I loved the making of the gold ring but confess to not understanding the metal making at all til he got to the gold part. Is it gold filled? I realize I am tres stoopit. It's a pretty ring and I would have liked to have seen it on her finger.

My own rings (both hands) are white gold that need tipping (or something) around the stones every decade as it wears quicker than yellow gold. Much narrower bands.

Had 5yr old granddaughter in the car today when she saw a woman with hot pink hair. She was horrifed and declared it ugly. We discussed that hair can be dyed but fixed, and it was ugly, but a pierced nose or eyebrow is forever. I mentioned tattoos and she reminded me of my brother's and SIL's small ones. I said, yes, I still love them but don't like tattoos and would never hurt anyone's feelings...to wait til she got in the car with parents if a waitress or someone had them. She said she will never do either piercings or tattoos or pink hair. I start them young.

Taught her to sew today a felt unicorn. My duty is done.

Okay a question.

We live in a very small town in SW Wyoming. We are in the midst of a severe drought. In the twelve years here we've never heard an owl.

I'm wondering with the drought if the owls are here now because the drought has killed off the vermin they like to eat in the wide open spaces they usually hunt?

Yum, there are lots of well fed and watered dogs and cats we can eat?

Owl trivia! They don’t build nests. They steal them from others, they are “opportunistic nesters” which means they are squatters. If you put owl houses out, it makes them happy.

From the little I have figured out a mommy of a sad sailor (she claimed to like Trump), & a gf who got a sad email went viral that there was no food (dogfood photos taken...one from a cinder block wall ship which seemed off), moldy showers, and no port for over 200 days. Out of 5k sailors I reckon some whine.

The Dems & MSM jumped on this. I think the 4,998 sailors who were made to look like whiners probably hung the guys from their underwear on hooks or used them as anchors.

There are always baboons somewhere useful for the MSM.
