Evening, folken!
Just finished watching the first two episodes of the 2022 Why Didn't They Ask Evans?, an adaptation in four parts of Agatha Christie's novel. This one is fun so far, with real humor -- possibly because it was adapted and directed by Hugh (House) Laurie. He had a solid background in comedy before his turn as the difficult doctor; you remember he worked with Stephen Fry in comedy, and played the hapless Bertie Wooster in a fairly recent adaptation of the Jeeves stories by Wodehouse. So this miniseries has good genes. We'll see how it goes. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 18, 2026 10:39 PM (wzUl9) 39

Leftism and Islam do not exist well together. Yet leftists keep falling for the idea of thinking they do.
Socialism is slavery. Islam is slavery. They are both whole-of-society grifts, that make everyone and everything into the property of the ruling clique, that got its hands on the levers of state power and eliminated its competitors. The rhetoric of socialism and Islam, all the blah-blah and yadda-yadda, is just the scam patter of a confidence scheme. If a scruffy guy comes up to you in a grocery store parking lot with a rhythmic patter, you don't have to listen to the words to dismiss him. You already know that he's just going to say whatever he thinks would get you part with some of your folding money. So it is with socialism and Islam, as with any grift. Looking for logical holes in the rhetoric is a job for chumps. They don't even care themselves if their own words are true or false, only whether they're effective at manipulating you. So why would they be incompatible? Because their rhetoric is incompatible? The rhetoric that literally does not matter, even to themselves? There is no contradiction, because they are literally the same grift under the hood. Posted by: no one of any consequence There is, though it's almost all CO2, and surface pressure is around 0.006 ATM. There was discussion on an ONT a month or three ago about it; the atmosphere is about the worst possible for space travel. Too thin to use as an air brake, so you have to carry fuel to slow you down. Mars atmosphere is toxic, mostly CO2 maybe?
The opportunity for closest approach is cyclical, in the 1960s it was something like 1982 and they had plans to try it, but the funding was slashed. Getting to Mars would take almost two years. So the notion of landing, grabbing a few rocks and immediately returning doesn’t make any sense either. A one-way trip has a lot going for it, in a way. Mars surface pressure is about 6 mbar, or .006 atm roughly. It can get up to double that in the deepest basins. That "dust storm" scene from The Martian wasn't accurate, they just needed some dramatic device. Wind speeds on the surface can hit 100 mph (in those dust devils), and you'll see that quoted, but because the atmosphere is so thin, the force is not that much. 100 mph Martian wind would feel like a 7 -10 mph breeze on earth. It used to have an atmosphere estimated at about 1 bar, but that was at the end of the Earth's Cambriam period so not so interesting today. Mars has planet wide dust storms, and dust devils as well. There is just enough moisture in the atmosphere for it to freeze out at the poles as hoarfrost in the planetary winters - in the north and south poles. >> ONT a month or three ago about it; the atmosphere is about the worst possible for space travel.
Yes, indeed. Mars is about the sour spot for "EDL", entry, descent and landing. The boys at JPL call landing on Mars "Seven Minutes of Terror". The mean one-way light time from Mars is about 12.5 minutes. When they usually do the EDLs, it's about 14 minutes. It takes about 7 minutes from entry to landing. So, when they get a signal from the spacecraft that EDL has begun, it's already either landed or crashed and burned. They have to wait another 7 minutes to know that fate. Batman
I believe MJ is also (or at least was until recently) a major part owner (majority owner?) of the NBA Charlotte Hornets. I didn't know about the NASCAR team. He had script approval on "Air," even though he wasn't in it. He requested that the part of one of the AA characters be expanded, which it was subsequently. The character in question, a black NIKE exec, is one of the best and funniest things in the movie. Posted by: mnw Yup all true. And yes he's still the majority owner of the hornets. Seems he's getting more run out of the nascar teams these days. Why he traded the best hornets players cause they couldn't win with him. They can pay him. I'll rebuild. One person claims bikers are showing up in Dearborn to deal with the durkas (the word he used). 50k expected to arrive person says. I don't know when or what is going on. I have no idea if this is true. However, if it is I know who I'm cheering for. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at August 19, 2026 12:08 AM (hzuYO) 257

Take the Moon. No atmosphere. And gravity is only 1/6 that of Erf. Powered descent with rockets are easily doable. Take Earth. Powered descent would take as much fuel to get down as to get up. But the atmosphere is thick enough to do all the braking you need to bleed off orbital to escape speed off. Mars gravity is 1/3 earth. More fuel. The atmosphere is not think enough to do all the braking. Terminal velocity on Mars is still supersonic. You need fuel and heat shields both. Anyway, I realized that it may be possible for humans to go to Mars and return. Atmospheric pressure is needed to prevent atrophy on muscles and bones. Clearly, enough fuel to get and and get home. Why can't they travel faster? Why two years to get there? Why not 3 months?
LOL. IDK. Posted by: no one of any consequence at August 19, 2026 12:11 AM (qFwJc) 261

Dearborn was lost 20 years ago Posted by: BruceWayne at August 19, 2026 12:10 AM (YZ0Fo) ******* I know. Only reporting what I read. Which could be bullsharte...that "thousands" of trucks are arriving. Bikers the guy said. Maybe wishful thinking on the part of this person. I'd prefer they arrive in Minnesota first for the Somolians. Then swing by Dearborn. That's gravity, not pressure. Mars' low pressure is very bad for other reasons -- you need a pressure suit (but it could be more a "tight spandex" type of thing with a breathing helmet). But it's the lower gravity that's the problem. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at August 19, 2026 12:15 AM (w6EFb) 267

Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at August 19, 2026 12:08 AM (hzuYO) From what I understand there was supposed to be a huge outdoor christian prayer to counter the usual large muslim outdoor prayer that's used for intimidation. The bikers are there for the muscle. What I'm hearing is most are them are ones returning from the Sturgis rally in S. dakota that ended 2 days before this event. Somebody reached out to them and said hey on your way back stop by. Orbital mechanics and the fuel/delta-v requirements vs current engineering and rocket capability. Invent an Epstein-drive fusion engine (which is possible physics wise, just well beyond anything our current engineering and materials science is capable of), and you can get to Mars at 1g constant acceleration trajectory in 3 days. Jupiter in 6 days, Saturn in 8, and about #2 weeks to Neptune. Uranus in 12 days. Bikers did a similar thing in Houston. Totally peaceful but the rally against 2A and the innocent home owner was totally shut down.
