Good evening Horde. The time has come for Monday shenanigans. The bar is open and the refrigerator has been freshly re-stocked with Orange Soda.

Welcome to the Monday night ONT which means vintage overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and join the fun. Good will offerings of amusing puns are encouraged. The Monday ONT has dialed up the wayback machine tonight with very random results.

The Whistle Bottling Works was located in Washington DC at the corner of 4th Street and F Street NE, just a few blocks from Union Station. Farber Bottling Company operated the Whistle Bottling Works in the 1920s and bottled Whistle orange soda along with other carbonated beverages. 1923 photo.

America's rivers once were the primary means to deliver timber. Each spring, logs were cut and floated downstream from the Adirondack Mountains to sawmills along the Hudson River. 1907 photo.

Drive-in movie theater in Lakewood, California. 1981 photo. It closed on September 3, 1990 with a final double feature: Shrimp on the Barbie and Arachnophobia. It was demolished and redeveloped into a commercial area known as Long Beach Town Square.

The New Orleans Cotton Exchange circa 1900 at the corner of Carondelet and Gravier Streets. The ornate building was demolished around 1920-1921 due to structural problems. A new building was constructed in 1921 and currently houses the AC Hotel New Orleans French Quarter (a Marriott property).

During World War I, some British and American military ships were painted in patterns called "dazzle camouflage." The designs were meant to confuse German U-boat crews trying to target them. Sub crews had to estimate a ship's distance, speed, and direction before firing a torpedo. The patterns were intended to make it more difficult to determine direction and the bow from its stern. Unclear whether the dazzle camouflage was actually had an impact.

Theater in Ouray, Colorado circa 1940. The "Uray" phonetic spelling was common at the time. The theater is long gone but the building still exists at 640 Main Street.

This is a popcorn stand in Iowa Falls, Iowa in 1939. Don't know anything else about it but the guy peeking around from behind the popcorn machine clearly did not want to be in the photo. The girl doesn't look thrilled either.

Bearre's Garage in Davy, West Virginia in 1938. Located deep in the coal fields. Welch is nearby. If you know Welch, West Virginia, that should tell you something. The roadsigns point to Iaeger, Oceana and Baileysville. No sign of a building on that location today but the train tracks remain.

Valley Grand Motor Co. (tractor and farm implement store) in Harlingen, Texas in 1939. Harlingen is in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley's farming region. The interweb suggests a location on or near West Harrison Avenue but don't think the building remains.

If you lived in Rock Springs, Wyoming in 2004, this is where you might have stocked up on Wonderbread. The building still exists but no longer operates as a Wonderbread business.

6 Our folks used to take us to the drive-in when we were little kids. I saw Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago at the drive-in (not on the same night). It was the best place to see both of those very big movies.

Standardization and everything takes the sense of “place” out of everything. Drive 10 miles, 1000 miles, 2000 miles, doesn’t matter, it looks identical.

17 Dazzle never really went away as variants of it was used in World War II.

One of the more common applications was shortening the length of a ship by using a darker shade of gray for a portion of the bow and then creating a false bow wave where the new bow was located.

If the submarine gets the ship length wrong and the false bow wave gives an incorrect speed reading, then the chances of a successful torpedo attack drop significantly.

The Germans and Austrians had a dazzle camouflage for their fighters in WWI, it was the Lozenge Camo, and often the German pilots would paint their "personal" color over top of it.

22 We had a few drive-ins in my area where I grew up. One was huge, and got knocked down some stoooopid large multi-plex took its place. It had 14 screens. Thats gone too now. There was another one that lasted until 1984, although I think the last movie I saw there was Wholly Moses with Dudley Moore. I..uh...didn't really see much of the movie. Hot chick, van, some assembly required.

Could be. I remember reading about it, or maybe it was a video. I think the pilot took it upon himself to try it and painted it himself. I don't remember the outcome. Part of remembers it working, but I'm just not sure. Supposedly it broke the enemy's ability to stay focused on the plane in a dogfight.

33 Had a drive in near where my grandparents used to in West PA. Saw Star Wars there. It's long gone now. Some of the space was used when they tore it down but mostly the land sits vacant. Just weeds and trees now. Even my grandparents homestead is long gone. It's a business park now.

The Fighter Factory here in town used to have a P-51 (don't know if they still do). Somebody took it out for a spin, and it made a low pass over some other pilots and I standing on the deck. Scared the fuck out of us. Aircraft perfection.

39 I used to love spotting them in the 60s and 70s driving around with my dad.

A couple times I would enter a normal looking building and find it was a quonset hut with a facade and addition.

One was a diner, with the kitchen made out of hut. I used to love the huts. It was such a powerful reminder of everything that happened.

40 Not a quonset, but on my grandpa's farm in Norway on the North Sea, there's a metal building about 32' round. Built there by the Krauts during occupation 1940-45. There's also a gun emplacement in the beach on his property and a good-sized bunker. The Germans poured a lot of concrete in Norway. My Mom was 12 when the war ended and she and her twin sister found a Luger in the bunker, either on Liberation Day, or the day after.

Similar to how Google mandated that dates would disappear (not on AoS) and everything would be based on "now" - so a video wasn't posted in "September of 2015", it was posted "11 years ago".

This gives nobody any chance to physically "place" the video or text in time or memory. Because the brain has a constant association related to the fall of 2015 - feelings, senses, who was president, what was going on, what their life was like, but of course zero association with "11 years ago" which changes with every year.

This puts us in, you guessed it, "an eternal present in which the party is always right". Probably just a coincidence.

There was a great restaurant in Spenard that was called The Garden of Eatin'. It was an old WWII Quonset hut with a few windows in the curved parts. It was awesome food, but apparently the life of a Quonset hut is limited by time and weather, and eventually it went out of business and was torn down.

The Krauts kicked them out to board troops several times when they were nervous about an attack. The house has a great view of the ocean, looking toward UK.

You had grape juice in your boyhood home? Luxury!! We used to dream of grape juice. We lived for three months in a rolled-up newspaper in a septic tank. We’d get up at three-thirty in the morning, half an hour before we went to bed, eat a handful of hot gravel, work twenty-nine hours a day down t’mill, and when we got home our dad would slice us in two with a bread knife.

Captain Henry Miller Shreve cleared the Great Raft logjam from the Red River between 1833 and 1838, using innovative snag boats to improve navigation. His efforts transformed the river into a navigable waterway, significantly aiding transportation in the region.
He lost about 100 slaves and 50 mules.
He recorded the value of the mules.

All the metal, engines are still there, mostly. The Germans gave the fliers a decent burial in the nearest churchyard. The headstones are all in a row, with a propeller embedded next to them. Saw actual pictures of the burial presided over by a German pastor. Soldiers at attention, along with a lot of townspeople.

At that time, there were only about 4 streets on the "land" side of the road and a couple on the sea side. Sorta expensive. Re that Moon transit picture from last thread. That was taken from the EPIC camera on the DSCOVR satellite. That spacecraft is at the Sun-earth L1 point and this is always in line with the Sun and Erf. SOHO and some others are there to. This is ideal for these types of observations.

Now the complications. While it's "at L1" to first order, it's actually in rather complex type of 3-body orbit known as a Lissajou or HALO orbit. Explanation of that would be a gross violation of the No Math Rule by a long shot.

Anyway, the line between the spacecraft and the earth is no exactly parallel with the earth-sun line and is slightly out of plane and that varies around over the course of a year, and one earth orbit. So, when the Moon transits the earth from DSCOVR's perspective, it is not an eclipse from earth's perspective, and when there is an eclipse from earth's perspective, the Moon will not be transiting from DSCOVR's perspective.

You'd just have to loop up illustrations of the HALO orbit to see this.

144 I mentioned on the Rant thread about seeing a bird in the yard flip-flopping around, turning somersaults, and wondering if it was trying to draw a predator away from the nest.

Well, no. Went out later and found it sitting on the ground. I approached it, and it did the hop&flop act again, trying to get away. I cornered it under some overhanging tall grass, and gently picked it up. Furious squawking ensued. I two-handed threw it up in the air, and it tried to fly, but steadily lost altitude, and crash-landed. I approached again, and it flopped under a car chassis, so I let it be. My guess is it has some kind of CNS problem? And I don't know what kind of bird it is. Brown/gray, black bill, white spot on its upper back near the base of the tail, and the wings are barred with Bright yellow feathers visible only when the wings are spread. About the size of a mourning dove.

Cooling our heels in NW Arkansas. Going to visit a historic site then begin our westward trek toward home. Need to be back by next Tuesday at the latest.

Today was first day since we left home that it wasn't brutally hot, swampy humid, or both.

There's a website cataloguing all the various Dazzle schemes from WWII. Haze gray replaced all the "camouflage" schemes and that's all most people have ever seen. Aristarchus first estimated the distance to the Moon from eclipse timings, which was later refined by Hipparchus. They came up with 60 earth radii, which is almost dead on.

They also attempted to calculate the distance to the sun, but were off by a factor of 400. The trouble was that was very sensitive to an angle they were trying to measure, which they estimated as 87 degrees, when it was actually 89.83. That ~3 degree error caused that 2 order of magnitude error.

The Ancient Greek Homo methods there are the first examples of the "distance ladder" notion they call it. You can't stretch a ruler out to the Moon and directly measure it. But by using observations and geometry you can relate that distance to smaller distances that you can actually measure, or are known from the next rung below on the distance ladder.

So, they got the distance to the Moon in terms of earth radii/diameters. As mentioned above, Testicles figured out the polar circumference and thus the radius.

Testicles used a distance ladder one run below for that. He knew the distance between two cities along a meridian, and comparing the sun angle at high noon, he got the circumference.

The (mean) distance to the sun, the dreaded AU, astronomical unit wasn't accurately determined to much later, after Kepler, Halley(pbuh) and Newton (pbuh indeed).

The method finally used was based on Halley's method of the transit of Venus. Halley died before that was successfully used.

The method is some beautiful, but complex geometry and you can look up the details if interested.

The transit of Venus method needed far-flung observations across the globe to see tiny parallax differences as well as accurate clocks. This latter tied in with the dreaded longitude problem.

Calculating the AU was BFD, and they went on far flung expeditions all over the place to get widely separated observation points. Captain Cook was involved in one of the expeditions, and several people died (I think some were killed by hostile natives) during that.

The precision of angle measurement required was in a few arc seconds. The time precision required was a second or two.

So, they had to have their clocks synchronized to within a second over the four corners of the earth, and their angular precision down to the arc-second.

And they did it.

I would love if that was the only problem. Bolts can be changed. This thing is on a whole different level. One example. They mounted the front of the rear fender to the frame, the back of the fender is mounted to the swingarm. The swingarm moves when you hit bumps, and the frame don't, and they obviously missed this little detail, so if the bike goes on the road and hits a bump the fender is going to fold like a cheap camera. The owner talls me. "its a hardtail". Uh, no you stupid asshole. Its a softail, it looks like a hard tail, but there's shocks mounted under the frame. It was a beautiful design. Looks old, rides modern. See those things under the frame???? Those are shocks, this swingarm pivots, its not a hardtail. Ugh..

Yup, romex, lamp cord, bell wire, speaker wire, wire nuts, saw it all. This one is a rat's nest. I pushed the high beam switch and only the low beam worked. I pushed it up to highbeam and the starter engaged. I had to rewire the handlebar harnesses, and the whole back end of the bike. They painted the frame battleship grey OVER the wiring harness and wires so all the wires were grey. I had to use brake clean to see what color they originally were. I want to burn the bike on the lift.

The original 1761 and 1769 transits done by the greats had an error of around 1 - 3%. They continued to refine and reanalyze the observational data until the next pairs.

The errors in the 2004 and 2012 recreations were as low as 1% up to 5%. The students and amateurs there had the benefit of modern clocks and modern optics, which the guys in the 18th century didn't have by a long shot.

They worked all those distances out last century using planetary radar ranging using big radio dishes. Arecibo was the king, hitting 2MW peak signal power a few times.

This represents some of the most powerful signals we've ever "broadcast from earth". Very tight beam widths though. But if someone was in the path of the beam, they'd be detectable to at least 200 ly, and maybe 1000 or a little better up to limits of signal to noise.

Believe it or not, it is possible to bounce a radar beam off the Sun itself. It's very noisy and not too accurate, but it can be done. The Sun is a noisy beast. So, via orbital mechanics (and a relativistic model) at that, timings and radar distances between planets and other solid objects determines the sun-earth and sun-other body distances.

That's why they put SOHO and the other L1 spacecraft in those crazy HALO orbits. You don't want to have to point your radio dish right at the sun to hear them. You need to little offset because of all that noise.

Mrs B used to go to Puerto Rico 1 or 2 times a year for her job. Her hotel was very close to the dish, so she went a few times to see it. She said the walk up to it was brutal. I could have went with her on those trips, but wtf would I possibly do during the day while she was working on site. I was there a few times as it is. No thanks, rather stay home.

He wouldn't have the money. the bike is a mess. It has to be completely taken apart to the last bolt and put back together by the numbers. The last thing we discovered on friday was the swingarm pivot bolts were loose, so we tried to tighten them and the swing arm shifted over and mashed itself the frame. It was missing the spacers that keep the swing arm centered. The shop owner blew a gasket. He spent an hour pulling destroyed bearings out of the back wheel, mounted the right brake rotor instead of the wrong one that was on it, put the back wheel back on, wrestled with frozen axle adjusters, etc. I told him it all had to come apart again for me to get the swingarm out to install the spacers. He lost his shit.

This is wild, just looking at a concept for building a radio dish in far side crater. Several robot landers. One would land in the center of the crater. It would have this rolled up wire-mesh thing inside. You'd then land a number of "DuAxel" rovers inside. The receiver would be deployed over the crater using those to pull some steel cables suspending it. They'd then anchor the cables on the rim.

The DuAxles would then descend back to the lander in the crater bottom, and pull the wire mesh reflector affair out and up the sides of the crater.

There was a great restaurant in Spenard that was called The Garden of Eatin'. It was an old WWII Quonset hut with a few windows in the curved parts. It was awesome food, but apparently the life of a Quonset hut is limited by time and weather, and eventually it went out of business and was torn down.

There is theoretically some very interesting shit out their at frequencies below 30 MHz (> 10 m). This could back in time to just a few hundred million years before t = 0. The Cosmic Dark Ages they call it.

For optical and infrared telescopes, L2 is really better than the far side. The trouble with the far side at those wavelengths is the wild temperature swings.
