A fine feel with a solid wrap and easy to hold. It lit well with an even ash and smokey result. And boring. Every once in awhile you find a cigar the looks good, feels good, and smokes good, and it just doesn't do anything for you. This was such a cigar. Everything went well but after ten minutes of trying to find something worthwhile about it, I gave up. No real aroma, no real taste, nothing. Zip. Nada. Consequently, I focused on the scotch (14 year Glen Morangie) and watching the eagle soaring over the neighborhood. I rate this cigar just one step above anything labeled as "sweet." And at $8.00, definitely overpriced. SighExcellent, Diogenes! Thank you! The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid Anyone have others to include? So did get to range, first and foremost.
Did one set of drills with my G21, starting with a Dicken drill cold at 25 yards. I failed. Only 7/10 in the target area instead of 8/10. After 50 rounds with the G21, I went back to my G30, which I had detailed stripped and cleaned. (it was filthy, as most of my Glocks are) After the cleaning, no malfunctions. Yea. Ended the session with another Dicken drill with the G30 w/red dot. Despite the shorter barrel, the G30 was more accurate giving me a tighter group at 25 yards and 8/10 hits giving me a passing grade. More evidence, if it was needed, that red dots make a difference for old fuckers like me. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, Buy ammo at August 16, 2026 07:06 PM (xcxpd) 13

One of the "broken arrow" incidents was a bit hard to fathom, if I recall correctly 4 out of 5 failsafes had basically tripped or became inoperative, the only thing that kept this weapon from fully detonating (in a farm field in one of the Carolinas maybe) was an inexpensive, ordinary relay type switch, something like that.

And, I bet they looked. Really really looked. Knowing what I know about the military, when a "sensitive" item is lost or stolen, they go to great pains looking for it. Night vision goggles, weapons, you name it. Anything like that.
So a hydrogen weapon? Yeah, you don't want to report to your superior "Danged if I know where it is". We were flying nights (naturally) in Macedonia, and somebody lost a box of ammunition attached to their air 60. It fell off, somewhere. I remember this distinctly because days off were a rarity, and they decided my day off was just dandy to fly around during the day scanning the ground, looking for a green ammo box of linked 7.62 on the ground at 1000 feet.

I did a few things gun related. Been practicing draws with various firearms around the house. Pretty much all end up pointing as they should with sights in alignment.
Painted a few old three dot sights with Glow Up--phosphorescent paint which under exposure to bright light for a few seconds, glows about ten minutes or so. Put night sights on a Smith M&P 9L and a new green light laser/500 lumen weapon light on an XD longslide. Uses magnetic charging. Have a long 4.0 slide, recoil spring set, and barrel for my XD. That gives me the option on carry to either had the longer sight base for better shooting or the shorter one for better carry. Often on some firearm makes, you can switch barrels and even slides so a 4 inch barrel and slide can become a longer 5 inch tactical model or vice versa. Only works for some makes as you have to do research into it. But you can have a 40 S&W that can also take a 9mm barrel, recoil spring, and magazine. Or even a 357 Sig Barrel and sometimes mag depending on the make. One way of fitting one firearm into variety of roles. The unlamented Sig P250 allowed a lot of combos, the P320 is based on that design minus the hammer. Posted by: whig at August 16, 2026 07:50 PM (E4rtv) 91

Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards The G21 is a big framed Glock but I agree that the G30 is pretty pleasant to shoot versus other shorty 45s plus managed to carry 10 in the mag. Compared with the G21, I prefer the Springfield XD45 as the grip is thinner and capacity is about the same. G30 though for the compact 45. I think the thicker frame spreads the recoil better than a thin one by increasing surface area for recoil shock absorption. Posted by: whig at August 16, 2026 07:53 PM (E4rtv) 97

88 I find .45ACP to be very pleasant, a firm push rather than a snappy magnum recoil.
Posted by: toby928(c) Depends on gun size, I find 45 ACP unpleasant in firearms under 4 inch barrels. Decrease the size, weight, and frame, you can get fairly nasty felt recoil from something that you would think wouldn't be that bad aka the original PPK in 380 ACP, not the PPK/s which has a longer grip frame. Blowback operation, very thin and short grip, gives a pretty good recoil shock to the hand. Scandium snubbies are similar---very light weight, moderate power cartridge like 38+p, and if you don't get something recoil absorbing like Hogue grips, like whacking your hand with a steel ruler. In, 357 magnum so unpleasant that it didn't sell much at all for Smith. Felt recoil is an interesting subject in an of itself because guns that you would think wouldn't be that bad, can be, and proper attention can make a hard recoiling firearm into one that is pleasant to fire. Stock design, grip design, frame, weight, cartridge pressure spike profile, proper fit, etc. can all change how a person firing it perceives the recoil. Posted by: mrp ========== Not surprised. I have one, not the Langdon upscaled version but with match hammer/parts installed. The recoil impulse is 'different' as it has a unique rotating barrel locking system that eats up some of the recoil. So a 40 S&W feels like a 9mm. But, most of them were in traditional DA/SA, you can convert them to decocker only DA/SA, and a very few were made in DAO only. The larger 45 ACP version is scarce on the ground too. DA/SA is one of those firearm operating systems that you have to master two different trigger strokes--I learned on a Sig P225 first and later the Beretta 92 in the service. Long pull on the first shot, short and pleasant on subsequent. If you buy this type of firearm for self defense, you need to shoot it regularly as it requires perfection to get a first hit and then you have to mentally adjust that your next trigger pull is going to be a lot less and usually shorter. To continue, in 1960, a substantial majority of Americans supported banning handguns and this is despite a much lower crime rate and JFK's assassination had not happened yet. The assassinations in the 60's and early 70's, the race riots in the 60's and 70's, Kent State, etc. all put 2A advocates in a hole but since then, the situation has reversed--gun control has proven to be a myth, violence has spread and become more random, and we no longer trust our authorities to not try to ban them if we give them an inch.
The political times have changed and the Court led from behind--there had already been a lot of movement in states well before the AWB expired and the Heller decision occurred. Posted by: whig at August 16, 2026 08:14 PM (E4rtv) 129
OK, on carry positions....
He doesn't mention the issue of drawing while seated with appendix carry. I really don't see how it's even done unless you're built funny. When seated, you've folded your body so the gun is horizontal, and your upper body is vertical and makes a wall where the top of your gun is. I just don't see any advantage to it over side carry. Carry in a car is a problem with side carry - IF you're right-handed, carrying strong side. Or, IF you're left-handed carrying strong side as a passenger. And that's entirely because of the seat belt. Safety, my nanny's fanny - that belt is a menace. Particularly the buckle. So is the bucket seat concept (mainly with air bags), where the seat comes up around your hips to engulf you - no other place you sit really does that. Glad he mentioned the fundamental problem with "off-body" carry - that it's off your body and that means it isn't secured at all times. TBC... Posted by: GWB at August 16, 2026 08:15 PM (kU0PQ) 130

ATF still has zero guidance on wtf is going on other than scattered reports of IOI's and regional offices saying not to sell stuff. Majority of FFLs are sitting this out but those that are not are moving massive amounts of suppressors. Posted by: Duncanthrax at August 16, 2026 08:20 PM (0sNs1) 139
Here's my main problem with concealed carry and driving...
I have a few solutions I've given a look at for carrying while driving. And the common theme is I need to take out my gun and transfer it somewhere other than any of the carry options that make sense while NOT driving. But I've looked at putting a holster on the seat belt (the part that crosses the waist, pointing outward, not the angled part across the chest). And I've looked at fixing some kind of holster to the console/dashboard. And I've looked at a holster on the front of the seat between my legs. Yep. The PPK was ironically the firearm that popularized it and then the Walter P1/P38 brought it to wider audiences. Smith and Wesson adopted the DA/SA for its iconic 1st Generation through 3rd Generation firearms. Sig, being a good German and Swiss company also brought it to American gun buyers. But then gun trainers brought it to the attention of police departments and gun buyers that it was much more difficult to teach a double action/single action different trigger strokes and accuracy suffered. The Glock Safe Action was labeled by the ATF as double action and then the race was on. Ruger, a late competitor to Wonder Nines, started with DA/SA and Smith started making DAO which have one trigger pull but heavier to try to catch up. Sig introduced its DAK which is similar to DAO but all three companies lost business to Glock over the training issue for police. Cooper ran a premier gun training facility and saw good students paying money struggling with either the first shot or the second affecting overall accuracy on the most critical shots. That is where he was coming from. Posted by: whig at August 16, 2026 08:22 PM (E4rtv) 143

I'm sort of surprised the 2nd amendment wasn't amended. Democrats held Congress in varying degrees of completeness from the 1930s thru about 1990? And several Democrats. Maybe getting 2/3rds state ratification would have been a stretch.
But I do think the political will was possible overall, during some of that time. The nation was much more homogenous politically and culturally. Now? Fuggedabout it. Never, ever, ever ever ever give up your guns. Posted by: Common Tater at August 16, 2026 08:23 PM (H50PN) 145

The one he doesn't address is shoulder carry. Which has the advantage of being almost always accessible, even while driving. Of course, you will have to untangle whatever cover garment you're wearing from the belt, but I end up doing that anyway just to keep me feeling like I have free movement. (There are times I uncover my side-carried pistol from the over-garment when seated and belted into the car; the console blocks it from view, but it's one less thing with which I will be fumbling if I need to get to the piece.)

FFL.transfer of sbr/sbs is in limbo due to additional requirements in the 68 GCA; "approval of the AG" for transfer, which the form 4 covers.
Otherwise the ATF is clearly blocked from enforcing NFA requirements on plaintiffs rolling their own, and for some plaintiffs that includes the marking requirements. For cans, I would not be shocked if 50-100k of them are sold sans form 4 before monday AM. People are buying 3-5 at a time. 139 Here's my main problem with concealed carry and driving...
They all are decent options if you can make them fixed enough to easily holster and easily draw the weapon. But they all require I administratively handle my gun when I enter/exit my vehicle. That means possibly exposing the weapon to passersby - which defeats the concept of concealed carry. Posted by: GWB Shoulder holster with a jacket or an ankle holster. Both have drawbacks. But appendix or strong side don't work when driving. The appendix carry wedges making draw difficult, the strong side buries the firearm into the back and don't even think about SOB aka small of back holsters in such situations. 120 ... "JTB, I had to excuse myself from the hobby thread before I had a chance to ask you. Did you do your own 4x5 processing and printing?"
Oddbob, I did my own. I didn't have a darkroom so I used a JOBO setup and a changing bag to process the film and just worked in the dark when printing. Used it for everything from 35mm photo and slides to medium and large format film. I should see if the JOBO and printer still work. It was a long time ago. The JOBO was handy since color film needed specific temperatures and it had a heater element. B and W film was more forgiving. Posted by: JTB at August 16, 2026 08:27 PM (yTvNw) 157

And, for ammo, I will make the pitch, again, for AmmoSquared.
It is a good way, IMO, to dollar-cost-average your ammo over a long term. It's shipped when you want. It's not probably for precision ammo, but it's good for range ammo and might work for some slightly less easy-to-find ammo. Though they don't have every kind of ammo all the time. Get in car, belt in. Unbelt, get out. No carry option worth a damn isn't accessible seated in a car. I have carried for decades, including years for work both in uniform and plainclothes, and have literally never transferred a pistol to another holster in a car. I have never *seen* anyone do such for work or ccw, except for goofy ads for car holsters (most of which will not secure a pistol adequately in an accident). Never seen instructors say to do it, either. I have drawn pistols in anger in vehicles on several occasions, including at work, both from duty holsters and IWB/OWB concealed. Depending your build and whether you are right handed, a belt cross draw can work as there is usually a gap between the car door and the car seat and you can wear a loose shirt like a hawaiian shirt for cover. Another unorthodox carry method is pants that have an internal holster accessed through a velcro slit in them or cargo pockets. All of which require cross draw technique as does shoulder holster carry.
You can draw from the weak side with a shoulder holster though--use a calvary draw technique. Has to be practiced as all holster carry does. A Sneaky Pete holster can work too for this carry without the need to conceal--these are designed to look like cell phone, beeper, or even 1st aid kit holders and a small concealed weapon can be carried in it. I’m in a wait and see mode on the suppressor decision. Right now it applies to a very specific set of sellers and buyers, and even if you are a member of the class (e.g., GOA or NRA members), you still have to look to your state law.
I’m in the fortunate position of having gone through the old process, so there’s no need for me to rush out and buy. But this is still huge, especially since the DOJ didn’t appeal. Only a USDC decision, but according to the left, one USDC injunction applies to the whole country. Posted by: RI Red - at August 16, 2026 08:38 PM (LMRVO) 171

Obliquely referred to upthread. But in practical terms, it is a gray area. The named plaintiffs which are several different gun organizations and their members are the only ones that this technically applies to. So before you risk being a test case, at the very least, join one of this fine 2A advocacy groups. GOA and SAF were the lead and there might be others named. What is probably going to happen is a group of blue states and localities are going to try to get involved and appeal, their problem is that the appeal will go to the 5th Circuit. Dunno how that will go down because they have standing issues whereas the fed government doesn't. It might or might not end up at Scotus. Dunno. I would do the paper version anyway to cover yourself legally, especially if not in the 5th Circuit or a member of those named organizations. Posted by: whig at August 16, 2026 08:43 PM (E4rtv) 175

Posted by: TxAnn ======== S&W has the grip safety on several of their handguns like the Double Stack Equalizer in 9mm, various Shields in 380 or 9mm, all of which have lower weight recoil springs to rack. Reason is that they are hammer fired guns (internal but hammers-not strikers). I've racked the Equalizer at gun store recently recently because I too have arthritis issues, the recoil spring is not too bad to rack the slide. There are the push pull techniques though that you can use with your current Glock and moving up to a full sized frame might also be an option. And I would keep a round in the chamber, Glocks are drop safe and you might not have time to rack the slide in an emergency. In a reload, you drop the slide release instead of racking it and keep firing. Posted by: whig at August 16, 2026 08:52 PM (E4rtv) 185

Posted by: Weasel at August 16, 2026 08:52 PM (3+CbN)" Sure, but its 100+ outaide the car here, ain't no snack going to last a day in the console. Problem with small pistols for those with the hand problems is that when it is age or injury, it's normally all downhill even if you teach them the peoper method. Seems a majority of little old ladies can't do it even if they have a hulk grip strength because they don't understand the technique to do it for some reason. That basically leaves small wheel guns only for carry, and in 38 or 32 so they can use them effectively. And basically forget about reloading, which is where pistols vastly outclass revolvers. You get 5 or 6 shots and done, but fortunately most real world defensive uses in sane places require 0 shots. Posted by: heya at August 16, 2026 08:58 PM (23NNO) 192

TxAnn, this is what Brave AI says and it pretty much tracks with my experiences,
====== The Smith & Wesson M&P 380 Shield EZ requires less than half the force needed to rack the slide on a standard 9mm pistol, with the EZ380 and EZ9 models cited as having comparable, very low racking effort. Standard recoil springs on full size semi autos run about 15 lbs or so. Smaller compact sizes often have doubled recoil springs and that can push the effort needed to nearly twenty lbs or so. You are also cocking (most striker fired) or pre cocking (Glock) the striker with the racking making it a bit harder than just recoil. A hammer fired, on the other hand, requires less effort with the hammer back and that is what the EZ models do essentially, the grip safety releases the hammer so the racking strength needed is much less. You can do something similar, don't recommend it as a regular practice, but cock a 1911 pistol's hammer and rack the slide for practice, you will notice much less effort to do so. On hammered fired DA/SA, some you can do that with, some you can't depending on the model. Posted by: whig at August 16, 2026 09:02 PM (E4rtv) 197
They make thingamajigs to help people rack pistols against counters or desks for administrative loading but I can't say they seem all that safe for this sort of user, and in practice I always see people give up and just not carry.

I've had multiple hand surgeries, elbow surgerys, back surgery (most recent) due to nerve impingements caused by bone spurring in nerve channels.
Lost a lot of grip strength which is slowly coming back with rehab. But, small semi autos, typically striker fired, will have stiffer recoil springs or often double/2 stage recoil springs because that recoil spring is necessary to slow down the slide speed so upon return that it can eject the fired case, pick up a new round, and then put it into the chamber for the next trigger pull. All semi autos have slide/recoil spring, and ejection/extraction that are designed to work within fairly narrow parameters. So the ammo cannot cause the slide/barrel/recoil spring extraction and ejection to operate too fast or too slow. Change one of the variables in the equation, and you can get function problems. To get over that problem, they design in overkill to make it operate with a variety of ammo and even tolerance for limp wristing in some cases. That includes stiffer recoil springs in many cases. Range time. Took a couple of friends to the local shooting spot and let them shoot my suppressed Ruger .22 pistol. One friend took the opportunity to check zero on his 9mm and his .380 ACP.
I took the opportunity to pull out my EDC Sig P365, which I have been carrying daily for (mumble, mumble) months and emptied it with zero malfunctions, which is as it should be. A good time was had by all. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at August 16, 2026 09:12 PM (aQEfL) 206

Appendix hurts. Rear quarter I have never tried. Don't want to carry a bag. I like shoulder holsters above all BUT my AO doesn't really allow a jacket of any type except a couple months a year due to extreme heat. Favorite is using a left handed IWB holster (I am righthanded) in the small of the back. Just wear long untucked shirts. The most comfortable for everything up to full size 1911s.

People that compete regularly have learned some tricks that reduce reliability if you operate the firearm on ammo outside the original design parameter but can give superior accuracy and speed in firing sequences.
That is where tuning a semi auto to use a specific ammo can allow a gunsmith or in many cases, an experienced amateur competitor to keep the reliability, increase the accuracy, and speed, and be able to compete in a match. That option is available to everyone but the key is you have to feed it specific ammunition that you have designed all your springs, trigger pull, barrel tolerances, lubrication, etc. toward. If you compete, you will learn how to do this or have someone else do it for you. If an amateur, ask for a gunsmith's help because race guns require you set one of your variables as a constant--usually the ammo you feed it. Posted by: whig at August 16, 2026 09:15 PM (E4rtv) 212

Posted by: TxAnn ======== I have a compact Thunder that I inherited. They are hammer fired and a bit easier to rack than a striker fired to me. The larger Thunder Nine probably has less effort needed to rack the slide than the one I have. Very thick grips though on it. As heya was saying above, there are devices that look like wings at the back of some semi autos, Glocks are one of them, that you can get a better grip to sling shot the slide into being racked. Makes it harder to carry though. The easiest, at the range, is to be sideways to downrange (the safe direction). you push your strong hand forward gripping the pistol in a firing grip while you push your weak hand backward at the same time to rack the slide. Allows you to at least double the amount of handstrength on the problem by sharing the effort between both hands and arms. Posted by: whig at August 16, 2026 09:22 PM (E4rtv) 216

A while back I posted a link for a gadget called (IIRC) EZ Racker but I can't find the link and bing isn't helping much. Anyway, it was just a 3d printed block of plastic with slots to fit over specific models of slides and give a lot of surface area to grip. If they're out of business, it should be simple for anyone with a modicum of CAD knowledge and a printer to make one. The hitch of course is that you need the specific gun to take measurements from. Posted by: Oddbob Possibly, I think perhaps the M1A's are using cast receivers now but I really have not looked at one in years close up. Springfield Armory (the pvt company version) briefly used some cast Garand receivers to make some Garands in the 90's I think. Too expensive to make forged receivers anymore for large rifles and cast has improved regarding strength of the steel alloys that can be cast. That is what made Bill Ruger's company be able to grow so fast. Not relying on forged receivers and frames. Posted by: whig at August 16, 2026 09:36 PM (E4rtv) 234

Posted by: man ======= Basically a redesigned Garand with a box magazine in 308. Can be very accurate if you are careful with stock fitting, otherwise, like most semi autos--2-3 MOA, a bolt action is more accurate nowadays straight from the store. You can easily buy a store bolt action now that routinely hits 1 MOA or better. The M-14 needs some tricks to do that regularly. Posted by: whig at August 16, 2026 09:41 PM (E4rtv) 235

Posted by: TxAnn Sometimes the strength can return if it is an issue of muscles only--there are a variety of exercise gimmicks which I used to increase my extensor strength (cost about 10 bucks from Amazon for a set) and are like rubber brass knuckles that you extend your fingers and retract over and over. Then I have a gel hand grip that compresses at a certain strength that works like a fingergrooved fat handgun grip. Each color represents a different weight. I compressed that over and released while watching tv. Gained about twenty pounds so far as measured from pre surgery. My peripheral nerves were impinged in my cervical region as they came off the spine (forminal stenosis) for the arms and hands. I had the surgery this winter when my grip and arm strength dropped by one third in a year prior--pain is okay to deal with, loss of function is not. Posted by: GWB If you are not going to shoot a whole lot of rounds through it, there were some new design Mausers and Sauer rifles out there that use hydraulically pressed barrels into the action--superb accuracy and priced well below a Tikka or Sako. They did not sell that well here and CDNN had some on clearance for about $600 more or less. Then again, for that, you can get a Savage which with a barrel nut system you can switch barrels to whatever cartridge you like in a cartridge family with minimal effort. You can do that now with an R700 (see Remage barrels) receiver, and Ruger's American series as well with a slightly different barrel nut system.
