Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant![]() “At some point, there will be NFL teams outside the USA,” Goodell said. “I have no doubt that this will happen one day.” The comments arrive as the league prepares for a record nine international games in the 2026 season. Those contests will stretch across London, Paris, Madrid, Munich, Mexico City, Melbourne, and Rio de Janeiro. The NFl is chasing nothing other than money, and respect for the game, its origins, and its fans is a punchline during their board meetings. If the goal of the NFL is to create an international league similar to the European kickball league we saw play its championship here in America...have at it! The dilution of the game will be complete, since the rest of the world will never embrace football as a youth sport. And the dilution of football as an quintessentially American game will also proceed apace. And that is fine. The NFL no longer represents the typical American in its play, its politics, and its rejection of America as its origin. So, NFL, gather up the spare euros and pesos and enjoy the extra cash...hopefully America will eventually wake up and reject football as a sport worth following. Probably not, but baseball and basketball are following a similar path, and they aren't doing all that well! [Crossposted at CutJibNewsletter and X/Twitter]. Didn't the NFL have a European league at one point? I don't think it ever really took off. Soccer is loved by the Euros (and everywhere else) for the very fact that it's 1. A simpler game and ii. Forming a football league in Europe is hellishly expensive and I don't see the NFL being successful in that for a long time. There is a reason soccer is so popular. It's cheap to play. I haven't watched even college sports since about 2000, in part, due to seeing the corruption that they brought even to college campuses.
Admitting students that were horrible thugs or unqualified students on full rides, spending a lot of money on athletics yet ignoring crumbling libraries and classrooms/dorms, and pressuring faculty, particularly vulnerable ones like grad assistant teachers or junior faculty to pass assholes that never attended class nor did any tests. In other cases, the student athlete's tutors did the work for them. And this was only in the revenue producing sports-basketball and football mainly. Other student athletes were in fact students--track, baseball, women's sports (except basketball for some), did fine and got minimal or needed no help from the apparatus used for the men's revenue sports. All students though suffered from having to pay for the deficits (only about ten or so big sports programs actually could pay for themselves with revenue) through higher student fees and derivation of tuition money in some states to fund expensive coaches, facilities, and travel for these money sports. Now we have NIL and betting on sports. Even worse. Posted by: whig at August 20, 2026 11:38 AM (E4rtv) 128

The one reason to exist of the European Soccer leagues is not to enterraron, but to provide a contest for the working man to wager on, and lose his discretionary, or not so discretionary, income to his betters. We are seeing the same here with the legalization of gambling in sports. Without expansion the vicemarket shrinks.

As Pete Townshend said of his old bandmate John Entwistle--he was a bleepin musician. Entwistle could play lead, bass, horns--French Horn, Trumpet, etc., banjo, etc and he wrote the arrangements for these for some Who songs. Some people are so talented in music and musicianship, that they can play darn near anything given a bit of time to practice--because they literally hear the music in their head and then it is figuring out how to reproduce it with a particular instrument. Roy Clark was all of that but also a fully polished and entertaining comedian. Posted by: whig at August 20, 2026 11:53 AM (E4rtv) 172

Anyone who knows me knows that I believed there were only two seasons — Baseball and Winter. Opening Day was a personal Holiday. I even had partial Season Tickets for a few years. I got to attend the very first World Series game played at the old Ballpark In Arlington. My Memories feed on FB during the 2023 Playoffs and World Series left me melancholy, as it was full of my Rangers post-season posts and pictures from 2010, 2011, and 2015.
Then a political movement based on lies was allowed to invade the playing field. Then to add insult to injury, Baseball decided to make rules changes that make it more akin to sandlot softball. The final nail was sports betting. I haven't been to a game — or even watched a full one — in seven years. I caught a few frames of the 2023 Playoffs and the first four games of the Series, but I soon turned the channel (or turned on my Xbox.) I did watch most of the final game, and when the Rangers won it all, the best I could muster was good for them. I no longer had any connection to the team. I just don't care anymore. Minority opinion, but I find the NFL as entertaining as ever. Its politics are dumb, but the athletes are as good as ever, the game is fast and exciting. Sure, it's become a passing league because they protect QBs, but I'm not sure I find that less appealing than 3 yards and a cloud of dust. The one thing they really might have to adjust is the field goal kicking. 50 years ago a 50 yarder was impressive. Now it's routine. Teams don't have to worry about getting inside the others' 30 yard line anymore, and watching a game of long field goals is sometimes a yawner.
MLB is just boring, despite the pitch clock. NBA and NHL seasons are too long and now everyone makes the playoffs almost. I know NFL players by far the most. I used to know everyone in the NHL and what was going on. Now, I could barely name a few of the Bruins players, and I'm from Boston. Posted by: Lex at August 20, 2026 12:12 PM (+ScOG) 243
Owner greed in moving every game to subscription TV has reduced the casual fan base. Ticket prices are insane
Player greed will kill MLB next year. They will strike to fight revenue sharing or even a salary cap. Posted by: Ted Torgerson at August 20, 2026 12:07 PM (wGerL) Agreed. Half the time I turn on the TV to watch baseball, the game is somewhere else. I just don't bother! And yes, next year is going to hurt baseball very badly unless they quickly get much smarter than they have demonstrated! Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at August 20, 2026 12:12 PM (k5CNB) 244

This. The entire pro sports business model has completely shifted. "Fans" are irrelevant. Posted by: man at August 20, 2026 12:12 PM (cGjQu) 245
OT but isn't it frustrating when you're on the shitter and you feel done and just as you've finished wiping out of nowhere you drop another enormous load? Like where the fuck was it hiding?

I understand from a friend that loitering in the area of a Lane Bryant store can pay big dividends.

Yeah, I'm going to have to pass on that.
I did the club scene in my late teens-early 20s in Waikiki during the late 80s. The thought of clubbing now...no. It's sad that "mature" women try to hold on to something they no longer have: youth Posted by: SMH at God's mercy at August 20, 2026 12:05 PM (w65YX) I was splitting firewood a couple of years ago and I caught a chunk that bounced back and split my eyebrow. I sent a picture out to some friends with the caption that the mosh pit was a bit rough. One of the ladies I sent it out to did the Nelson Muntz Haha at me and told me she forbade me to go to that band, they always have injuries in the pit at their shows. 227 Does anyone like college or pro football
Posted by: Don Black at August 20, 2026 12:10 PM (ZxPkt) I've enjoyed college football, but the huge payouts to student players is ridiculous. The transfer portal sucks too. As this impending trainwreck steams on, I'll be watching less and less. Posted by: Our Country is Screwed at August 20, 2026 12:13 PM (N39Ws) 250

Any NFL franchise in Europe will fail for the simple reason that, there is no indigenous pipeline of players that would be able to fill a football roster.
I don't think Europeans would get behind a team of foreigners. Posted by: Thomas Bender at August 20, 2026 12:14 PM (XV/Pl) 252

I don't want to meet cougars, especially ones that may be irritable because of giving up booze. I have enough energy depletion from dealing with a highly strung five lb kitten. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 20, 2026 12:11 PM (6jy2V) Nice! Get the kitten a playmate. Less wear and tear on you entertaining them. But probably twice the destruction I have a 7yr old tabby and a 3yr old Maine Coon. Great entertainment and companionship. Posted by: Our Country is Screwed at August 20, 2026 12:16 PM (N39Ws) 255
I’m late to this thread but I have to say (sadly): I’ve loved the NFL since I was in 3rd grade. That’s a long time…. I still watch it but most of the passion and enjoyment is gone. If they expand the league to 40 teams (some international) playing 20 games a season I’ll lose all interest I expect. The quality of the game is already a tiny fraction of what it used to be compared to its peak years (which I’d say were roughly 1975 thru 2010 (give or take a few years on both sides). The NFL was once great; not so much anymore…. Sad trombone

Fan/kings/every gambling app says what? Posted by: man All of those gamblers assume the game is 'honest', otherwise why bet in a rigged game. When the inevitable string of fixing sports matches, insider betting, and other wretched examples surface, then the golden goose is cooked. Ordinary people are already priced out of most major live sporting events and yet being asked to pay for the palaces for wealthy athletes and club owners to make even more money. Like most things, it will continue for awhile on sheer momentum but it is no longer a unifying factor in American life and whatever nobility that these sportsball players, owners, and media claimed has been pissed away. All about the Benjamins is now even destroying college football and basketball as we speak. Posted by: whig at August 20, 2026 12:17 PM (E4rtv) 257
Yes, the MLB is dying too. I used to love it as a kid. The expansion ruined all the legendary rivalries.
You used to be able to turn on the TV and catch a game on WGN. Now it's all over the place, some games free and some not, so to heck with it. Posted by: Random PJ at August 20, 2026 12:23 PM (+jscL) 258

The only ep of Miami Vice I ever watched had G. Gordon Liddy as a guest star. And featured a pile of human ears. Posted by: Bulg Posted by: Bulg at August 20, 2026 11:50 AM (77rzZ) Ah, yes — good ol' William "Captain Real Estate" Maynard. That was his second appearance in the show. Miami Vice was the show of the 80's — at least for the first three seasons. The fourth season not only jumped the shark starting with "The Big Thaw", but it shoved a rocket up its ass and went into orbit with "Missing Hours". It went from Must See TV to lets see what else is on. I didn't see the last half of Season 4 and all of Season 5 (except the final episode) until years later in reruns.
