102 I wasn't familiar with Henryk Siemiradzki paintings but this caught my eye. The clean details of the surroundings, natural poses, and especially the unarmored Alexander just draw in the viewer. Even if the audience doesn't know the story behind the painting it is still evocative.

Alexander's idealized body, exposed, vulnerable and open to death, almost has a feel of Christ trusting to God to deliver him. Siemiradzki did a number of Christ-centered biblical paintings so I wondered about a possible connection in the artist's mind.

I wouldn’t be too sure. Capital investments take a lot of planning, years ahead of time, and one of the keys to any successful economy is a certain kind of predictability, insofar as that is possible in this world. Nobody wants to take the risk of allocating a gazillion dollars towards something, when a merry band of dumb shit Democrats will simply come along and kill it. These things can’t be turned on and off and on and off like a light switch.

118 A San Francisco high school where students get top grades simply for showing up now has the highest acceptance rate in the state to the prestigious University of California, Berkeley — as critics blame rampant grade inflation and rock-bottom standards for a surge in ill-prepared college students who end up dropping out.

Mission High School had a 45% acceptance rate into the elite university, with 34 out of its 76 applicants gaining admission last fall, far ahead of the state average of 15%, according to data compiled by the San Francisco Chronicle.

From what I recall from Western Civ class, oh these many years ago*, the "real" Greeks viewed the Macedonians in approximately the same way that coastal elites would view the residents of an Alabama trailer park.

It doesn't sound like anything has changed.

273 Art Throughout History: Ancient to the 20th Century

Henryk Hektor Siemiradzki (1843 – 1902) was a painter. He spent most of his active creative life in Rome.

The episode depicted in Siemiradzki's painting is connected with the following legend. During his campaign against the Persian king Darius III, Alexander the Great contracted a cold and subsequently fell seriously ill. The physicians were reluctant to treat him, fearing that the Macedonians would massacre them if they failed to overcome the illness and Alexander died. According to Plutarch, only his physician Philip, "seeing the serious condition of the patient, put friendship above all else and considered it criminal not to share the danger with Alexander and not to exhaust - even at the risk to himself - all means". Philip prepared a strong medicine and brought it to the sick man. Shortly before, Alexander received an urgent message from his commander, Parmenion, informing him that his physician had been bribed by Darius and would administer poison instead of medicine. As Philip handed Alexander the bowl of potion, the king asked him to read the letter he had received.

Nicely done painting; great detail & back story.

Imagine the natural, no legislation required going rate for entry level non-skilled minimum wage jobs without the millions and millions of illegal aliens who’ve setup shop here and compete for jobs here in good ole U.S.A.
