77 I'm impressed. The artist provides the sense of true to life accuracy with the skin tones, and natural colors and details of the clothing and nearby items, in this case the carriage. Having the background disappearing into the fog serves to sharpen the image of the woman by contrast. The entire painting is effectively done. Kramskoy uses similar approaches to his other portraits. I can understand why his work was popular.

The somewhat haughty expression on the woman doesn't diminish how well done the painting is

The title is also shared across different works including Daniel Silva’s 2022 bestselling art-crime thriller.

It also has a Wikipedia page.

In part, "It is one of Russia's best-known artworks, although a number of critics were indignant when the painting was first exhibited and condemned what they saw as a depiction of a haughty and immoral woman. Its popularity has grown with changes in public taste.[5]

The painting hangs in the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, while an earlier version, also dated 1883, is housed at the Kunsthalle Kiel.[6]"

Had Russia somehow avoided WWI (which she was responsible for starting as much as Germany was), she might have had a chance to make the transition to a functioning democratic state. (After 1905, she did have a constitution of sorts, the October Manifesto.) But, once the war came along, she was doomed.

Not quite, the sin was in disobeying the Lord's explict command to sex a particular woman up. Onan decided instead to be a jack off before completing the act and thence to die for disobeying the Lord's command.

Moses almost got the same treatment but the Lord relented. David might have gotten smitten too had he not publicly debased himself as king and asked for the Lord's forgiveness for sinning.
