PBS broadcaster loses access to 50TB of data comprising 70 years of TV history after contracted cloud storage vendor goes defunct

Nine PBS is afraid that it will lose over 70 years of archival materials and programming after its contracted cloud storage vendor has apparently gone out of business. According to Current, the channel used Open Source Storage, or OSS, for storing over 50TB of data — but it suddenly lost access to its data earlier this year. Nine PBS has been working with OSS and its predecessor since 2019 and intended to renew its contract on March 6 of this year. The company never responded and abruptly cut off the station’s data access even though it still had 30 days to retrieve its data after the contract ended.
The station dug a little bit deeper when it discovered that the OSS website no longer existed and was listed as delinquent under the Colorado Secretary of State. It also discovered that OSS utilized Iron Mountain’s services, so it sent a demand letter to the latter to preserve its data and to "pay any reasonable costs associated with its demand." At the time, Iron Mountain did not confirm or deny that it possessed Nine PBS’ data.

This wouldn't have been an issue if the organization bought a $1,000 NAS and populated it with a few hard drives.

DJ Doof - R.I.P. To My Local Classic Rock Radio Station Edition

100.7 "The Bay" - Classic Rock radio station in Baltimore went off the air last night, just before Midnight. The station was sold and the frequency is now a Christian Contemporary music station.

The folks at The Bay posted their playlist from their final hour on the air. Seems like they had fun taking a poke at the new format.

If you're interested, here are the final 2 hours of The Bay over the air broadcast. The segment starts with the 10pm "Get the Led out" block of Led Zeppelin songs -- something they've done for as long as I can remember. Although I think they used to call it "Zeppelin O'clock".

These are the last 3 songs they played. Put on an O's hat and pour out some Natty Boh in honor of The Bay, Hon!

17 I live in a small city. There are only 5 Flock cameras in town. Four are at the local Lowe's store and the other is in an intersection of an outlying neighborhood (I have no idea why). So, no cop action!

Not exactly growing up. By the time they brought out the PC in 1981, I had already been computing on my Radio Shack Model I for three years. It was the FUTURE!

I skipped the PC and didn't upgrade until the PC-AT. Did get the Shack Model 100 "laptop" in the meanwhile, and logged into CompuServe, pre-wwweb.

I knew every chip in that Model I and even messed with some of them in ways I never could later.

Which, unfortunately, means something very different than it did in the 90s. Back then we had Phil Keagy, Brian Duncan, Petra, and so on.

Now, it seems we mostly have some meager choirs and a few rappers. Up through the 00s, we went to concerts and enjoyed a lot of good music. I don't hear much of that good stuff anymore. Sad.

38 First time I ever used a computer was after the Army, when I started the drafting course at Billings Vo-Tech. 1992.

Now, I have my home laptop that I use as a desktop, my work desktop, my phone, my iPad. And yet, when something goes wrong I throw my hands in the air and say "golly." Then I have my wife or my son fix it.

Just because I use computers all damn day does not mean I know how the stupid things work.

We have one on each of the roads out of town. That's six cameras. I might be able to find a workaround on one of the Farm to Market roads, though, if I need to escape.

Not that I listen to regular radio much anymore, but there's comfort knowing it's there.

57 My dad was a field engineer for NCR. Started out repairing the beautiful old steampunk machines; had to learn the computer based upgrades. He hated it.

Aside from a couple of post-retirement jobs (school bus driver, delivery guy), he never had a cell phone. He never used a computer.

We bought our own Apple ][+ when I was in 7th grade.

Replaced with a //c a few years later.

And I bought myself a used 386sx/16 when I started college.

86 My first computer was ridiculously expensive. A 286 etc that cost $2,400 in 1996?

A buddy and I bought the Borland C and split the cost ($500). My middle son was writing software at the his age of 16.

He got his MS in Comp Sci 15 years ago and is now ridiculously wealthy.

In hindsight, it was cheaper than putting him through college, although I did pony up the $5,000 that he owed the Univ. of Toronto so he could graduate.

I think of it as a great investment in my son's future.

Which, unfortunately, means something very different than it did in the 90s. Back then we had Phil Keagy, Brian Duncan, Petra, and so on.

Now, it seems we mostly have some meager choirs and a few rappers. Up through the 00s, we went to concerts and enjoyed a lot of good music. I don't hear much of that good stuff anymore. Sad.

144 Well, we had contractors out to look at our "final" house projects - i.e., the kitchen and front entry/upper room. It has been 40 years since we moved into this house, and up until now we have done all of the remodeling work on every room ourselves. But we always knew that these 2 projects were going to be left to professionals (for various reasons).

We are pretty happy with these guys; they know the quirks of 100-year-old houses and are familiar with the neighborhood. It will be interesting to see what they come up with design-wise.

Looks like my "Bucket List Year #3 - The Third Year Is The Charm" money will be spent on these 2 things. Hopefully I will see the finished projects! So far, my numbers are looking good - 😊💕

198 Got to remembering my computer guru friend. He also had the Shack Model I, with full 64K memory and a "hard drive" that was a huge device that sounded like a jet taking off as it spun up.

He had the light pen, and a program that displayed options for crust, size, ingredients of a pizza. The computer would dial the pizza place. The artificial larynx (Speak & Spell, Stephen Hawking) would place the order. Pretty slick.

I should add, he modified the kit so instead of sixteen lines of 64 characters each in b&w, his had a full 16-color CGA of twenty-four lines of 80 chr each (wasn't it?). It displayed a bit oddly, filling in the 16*64 first and then painting the rest of the screen, but it worked.

Those were the days.

245 In high school in the mid 70s we used a teletype to use the local colleges DEC computer to program in Dartmouth BASIC. We guessed a rival high school’s password (they used the acronym for the name of their school district) and pranked them. I put FORTRAN programs up and compiled them. That’s a 1978 motherboard!

I quit for 2 reasons:

1) For unknown reasons, the popup ads stopped appearing-- completely. I was getting hundreds every night, then... nothing. night. No idea what went right.

2) One of the mods (presumably) started removing my popup ad posts. I don't go to the trouble of typing just to have my posts disappeared. Again, I thought the popup ads were so off-the-wall that they were funny.

281 High comedy at the Peon Shop today. Found a mouse nest, made of shredded Kleenex, in one drawer of the big black roller cabinet. Cleaned it out with the shop vac. Opened the wrench drawer. There was the mouse! I grabbed can of brake cleaner and soaked it down, thinking the alcohol/pentane might knock it out. It seemed stunned, but still mobile. Grabbed a barbecue lighter, and flicked it. Whole drawer bursts into flame, mouse included. Mouse scramble to back of drawer, over the wall, and is lost in the bowels of the toolbox. I close wrench drawer, hoping to smother the fire. It does not go out, just shrinks to a flickering blue flame. Grabbed the stinger for the MIG welder, opened the tank valve, and wafted CO2 gas over the flames, and finally extinguished them. Damage limited to a melted spot in the foam drawer liner. Mouse did not appear in any of the other drawers; probably dead underneath the bottom drawers. I put out some poison bait bars, anyway.

Yeah, could be. OTOH, the lake is big/deep enough and close enough to Bristol Bay that it's not out of the realm of possibility for some large marine life to wander in there from time to time.

I don't think Sparky got out of the roller cabinet. It's steel, and has a bottom in it. I checked all the other drawers, numerous times, and no mouse to be found. I expect there is a dead mouse behind or below the bottom drawers.

305 Whittier has to be the weirdest community in southcentral AK. It's really no damned where, hard to get to, through a long tunnel, and only when the train isn't using that tunnel. It has no less than three high rise buildings, but fewer people than most tiny towns. No grocery store, but a ferry terminal that gets used about twice a year, lots of fishermen in season, but just about nobody there in the winter. Just... odd. Particularly for Alaska.

Funny story - the guy that I was dating at the time had never kissed a girl, either. So we kinda looked at each other. He asked if I knew what to do. I said no. He said he didn't, either.

So he said he would ask his older brother how to go about it, and we agreed to go out again the next week and try it out. Which we did. Over and over. Fun times.

We were good kids, though - both of us went to our respective spouses as virgins (I always figured that with my luck I would end up pregnant the first time I had unmarried sex, and I didn't want to have to tell the parental units that their innocent little girl wasn't quite so innocent 😂

I very much recommend a terrier. Much easier to live with, and in our case, Louie was a dedicated mouser. And rabbit hunter. And gopher hunter. And occasionally a phantom-in-the-old-cornshucks hunter. He killed everything alive in the old farmhouse we bought and remodeled. And was cuddly at night.

The Buckner Building was built during the Cold War as a self-contained facility, so yeah, that was the idea. I think the Begich Towers work sorta that way, it's all condos although some of them are relet, so that people who fish out of Whittier have somewhere to shack up. No idea why else you would live there, unless you run the tunnel or the ferry terminal. But, when you drive in, you bring whatever you need, because there really is nowhere to buy groceries or necessities. There is a pretty good ice cream joint, but only during the summer. I have no idea who lives there year around. Not many.

324 We had a squirrel that got down our chimney and was trapped in the fireplace, hubs resolved the matter by lighting a huge fire in there to smoke him out after he scrambled up when the flue was opened. That squirrel was overcome by the smoke and dropped down into the flames and was cremated. If it was a dessert it would have been squirrel jubilee. Two days later hubs was up on the ladder repairing the chimney cage, I miss my handyman.

327 I had a "visit" from a long dead friend in a dream last night. She died young of a protracted illness. So full of life. The kind of girl you couldn't even imagine ever being dead - and she was gone. Most of my life she's been gone.

This is the second time ever I was given a task to complete in a dream before a dead loved one showed up to shoot the shit with me. So weird.

In this case I was looking through documents in boxes. It's almost like the task comes along to keep me engaged and "in it". I have since researched and seen similar reports in what seem like "visit" dreams. I embraced her and then she had to go. I couldn't hold on but the dream world stayed which is very different from how lucid dreams go. Those vanish entirely. I was sad all day today, it was like losing her again.

My Cat is full-time outdoor. Neighbors got him from the "barn cat" shelter program, but he decided my place was more welcoming after they later adopted a dog. (shrug)

The late Mrs. Borgia and I bought our first place as a married couple (a condo) from an airline pilot who was running a deal like that. He had it full of beds (no doubt quite illegally) and was renting 'em to other pilots who wanted to pocket most of the cash from their per diem.

He got switched to another route so he sold it off to us.

This was long before AirBnB was a thing.

I lost my BFF in first grade to a brain tumor. Linda Austin. She was amazing in every way. When she lost her hair, mom let me shave my head to be in solidarity with her.

She died when she was nearly 7 years old. Not a day goes by when I don't offer up a prayer for her. Sometimes I dream of her as well. I don't think I can quite summon up her face when awake, but I seem to know her immediately when I'm asleep.

It isn't weird. It is confirmation of love. Don't be sad. Be very, very happy at being blessed by a personal visit after the fact.

Yeah the day was kind of like that. What I find interesting because I of course like psychology, is my brain can conjure a perfect 100% accurate picture of her as I knew her in a dream. Effortlessly. Even in my mind's eye.

But the woman I was talking to, although I recognized her as her, did not 100% look like her. Maybe 91%. I draw portraits of women, so yes it was 91%.

Per my engineering mentor, who worked on the North Sea oil rigs, the deep sea divers working the rigs were all planning to save up and buy a dive shop in The Islands; but they always seemed to spend their weeks off in an Amsterdam brothel and would show back up at the rig flat broke.

It wouldn't take a Flock camera to do that; an ordinary monitor camera could catch that act. Flock cameras are automated license plate readers, so the database knows who you are, and everywhere you go. I'm sure they, or the police, combine that with cellphone geolocation data, and God knows what else. The potential for abuse is enormous, and numerous abuses are already on record.

The thing is, it was ALREADY illegal to drive drunk and ALREADY manslaughter to kill someone while driving drunk.

The drunk driver in this case pulled a 4-12 year sentence, BEFORE "Leandra's Law" was a thing. You could argue that should've been more, and I wouldn't dispute it.

The new "law" provides for a sentence of up to four years and a fine of $1000–$5000.

In other words, less than the perp got under the existing law.

But everyone got to grandstand for the cameras instead of doing actual useful work.
