Not so much seals, but little microcracks in that Rooskie module, likely caused by metal fatigue from the repeated docking. The Rooskies just wanted to take a hack saw and cut something where they get to the area, NASA had a hissy fit that it was too risky and ordered our people into the Dragon, if you remember. The Rooskies, thinking we were just a bunch of pussies, agreed to hold off on that. They're now just "watching" and doing some other tricks. The spacewalk procedure is a PITA. The ISS atmosphere is 21% O2 and 79% N2 at 1 atm, basically sea level air. But, the spacesuit atmosphere is pure O2 at a little over 4 psi. So, the bends would be a big problem if they jumped in the suits and went outside. They have to camp out inside the airlock over-"night", where they reduce the pressure to about 10 psi. That gets the N2 levels down on its own. Then they have to prebreathe pure O2 for a couple hours before getting in the suits and depressurizing the airlock. Posted by: All Hail Eris, She-Wolf of the 'Ettes 'Ettes at August 17, 2026 10:29 PM TY Eris, she was a sweet kitty. Showed up in the neighborhood 19 yrs ago. Little girls next door were eating butterscotch cookies that day, thus the name. They fed her and played with her. Later that summer she had kittens in the neighbor's wood pile. We took them all in to protect the kittens. Eventually we found homes for the kittens and ended up keeping Scotches. She ruled the roost thru 2 big labs who came and went during her tenure. Lately she allowed the latest dog, Flash, to share her home and frequently jousted with him. She was a Tortie and according to Scottish tradition if a Tortie choses your home it is good luck. And that is true, we were lucky to have such a sweetheart for 19 yrs. Posted by: Farmer, with his own historic take at August 17, 2026 10:59 PM (4Qj8V) 67

Beard is a mad lad at these food challenges. He diets pretty stringently inbetween IIRC. The way some of these competitive eaters have said they stay at a reasonable weight is keeping their total average caloric intake within normal limits, exercise, and eating very very clean between challenges. Dig a hole, carry her to the backdoor and I hear something, like she exhaled. Wait and chalk it up to the death exhale, no movement, no pulse. I place her in the cold ground, then her legs moved! Took Sally inside, laid her down, petted her and she started breathing noticeably. Soon realized it was time to let her go, stopped petting and she was gone in a few minutes. See BPPV, benign parox-something vertigo. Inner ear "disturbance". I had an attack of that a while back. Nystagmus -- rapid eye movement -- is a symptom of that. Sit in a swivel chair and have some rotate you one way or the other. Your brain can sense which way you turned and about how much. But that sensing only works for a little while. Under steading rotation, the things in your inner ear that sense that equilibrate, and you loose the sense you are rotating. The coriolis accelerations in a rotating frame also wreak havoc with that rotation sensing system. About 5 or 6 RPM is the limit. Although some people can adapt to higher, but it's a bitch. The more things change, the more they stay the same. (French roots) Watched a commercial this evening regarding an anti-viral for C19 exposure. That one clearly recommended it should not be taken by pregnant women as it might cause fetal harm. Greenland - we need to buy it.
Cap Susi weather station, Greenland, 1944 Operation Bassgeiger @11:35 [The Germans] built a small wooden hut among some rocks to house their important radio equipment which was vital for the continuing operation of the weather station. April 1944, a six-man team from the Danish Sledge Patrol attacked the Germans who fought back. The Danes fleeing, but one German officer was killed in the exchange. The remaining 26 Germans then radioed home, requesting evacuation. The Luftwaffe decided to evacuate the men by air. The Germans found a stretch of firm level sea ice some 5 to 6 km south of the base. And on the 3rd of June 1944, a large Ju290 piloted by Hauptmann Schlack-Lebahn flew from Monazan in southern France, landed and rescued all 26 Germans, and then flew back to France without incident, a round trip of about 5,000 mi. https://youtu.be/Ufig2ip-_PI?t=694 Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at August 18, 2026 12:58 AM (iLKq8) 185

Posted by: JQ at August 18, 2026 12:53 AM (rdVOm) I was sort of throwing stuff at the wall today and realized something I knew but had never thought about. The Left (leftists, not leftards) doesn't care about ideology at all. One of the reasons they always end up killing each other. All they really care about is that they can make you lie for them. Because whether you're a big dummy or a very low personality, if you will repeat their lies, they know you are controllable. That's one of the reasons (besides the obvious) that lying is so integral to everything they do. Anyone can tell the truth about something, even accidentally, or when it suits them. But if you are willing to repeat a particular lie, or set of lies, you are temporarily useful. Posted by: ... at August 18, 2026 01:00 AM (vE0+H) 188

Another possibility for vertigo (mine) is Meniere's Disease.
The chambers of the inner ear each have their own fluid supply that's being constantly created and destroyed. In most people, that balances out. If you have Meniere's, it doesn't, and eventually the pressure breaks the flimsy membranes between the chambers, and the "wrong" fluid winds up in both chambers. That causes instant-onset vertigo if the chamber dealing with balance gets hit. So instant that some people just drop to the floor when it happens. Thankfully mine isn't that bad, but it does send me stumbling in a zig-zag line for the commode. I called myself an ambulance the first time it happened in my 40s; thought I had a brain tumor or something. It also causes progressive hearing loss when the chamber dealing with hearing gets hit. In 80% of people, it only hits one ear. Nobody knows why. And nobody really knows what causes it in the first place, despite it being identified in the mid 1800s. "Stay hydrated" is the only thing the ENT could say. Cut down on caffeine & salt. Thankfully, I'm a one-ear person, so I can still hear fine on one side. Huey Lewis has the 2-ear version, and it ended his singing career. Posted by: mikeski at August 18, 2026 01:02 AM (VHUov) 192

Well, 11:20 PM here, and I am getting sleepy. Had a weird thing happen at the gas station in Calgary today. Put card in pump, selected $100 as the fill amount, authorized card, and began filling. Pump kicked out at $25, and the lamps behind the three fuel grade buttons began flashing. I hit "regular" again, and the pump tally went to zero, put the nozzle back in the tank, and ran it up to $74 and change. No receipt printed. Went into the office, told the counter guy what happened, and he said, "my display shows only one sale for $74.76" I said "did I just get $25 worth of free gas?" "Maybe you did."

They knew the earth was a sphere, but had a geocentric view, thinking the earth was at the center of the cosmos, and the heavens just rotated around it. They didn't have a notion of gravity as we think of it. There were the four elements, earth, water, air, and fire. Everything had its place, with earth at the lowest, water above it, then air and fire. The earth was at the center, and closest to the center, where "it wanted to go". The most accepted origin to Bug Tussle's name was from an incident in the 1890s when a swarm of insects spoiled an ice cream social. Another possible origin of the name comes from picnickers, who watched bugs fight after eating. Another possible origin comes from two residents who wanted to change the name. During an argument, the town got distracted by the sight of two dung beetles fighting. That last origin is "Squirrel!" adjacent and thus most credible, IMHO. A sanctified shit ton. One solar mass is about 330K earth masses (or about 1000 Jupiter masses). No, in the Milky Way, the mass range of stars goes from about .08 to 100-150 solar masses. Anything less than that can't be a star, as it doesn't get "heavy" enough to fuse hydrogen. More massive stars have shorter and shorter lifetimes. At some point, they just can't get any bigger. Now, the distribution of those stars. The majority of stars are less massive than the sun, being red dwarfs up to about 0.5 solar masses. The mean mass is somewhere around 0.3 - 0.4. Weight.... not mass Getting at the mythological cosmologies that viewed the heavens as weightless and floating in a big sphere with the heavy earth at the middle... they really weren't far off from the truth. From a terrestrial perspective, the heavenly objects really don't have "weight", in spite of being so massive. What's pulling on them? The Earth? Not significantly. So they look like they're just floating. Because they kind of are. What would happen if you "turned off gravity"? Well, everything would just start flinging off in a straight line! But what is gravity? What does it act on? Mass. To remove gravity, you'd have to remove mass. So now you have a bunch of massless objects. And massless objects have no inertia, so they wouldn't keep going in a straight line, they'd just stop.
So stopping Gravity would look just like stopping Time. *bong rip* Dude. Posted by: Warai-otoko at August 18, 2026 04:12 AM (Ot/FD) 295
Pythagoras and some other first proposed the earth was a sphere around the 500s BC. This was just because a sphere was a perfect shape. Then Aristotle came along and noticed that ships disappeared bottom first on the horizon, and that the earth casts a round shadow on the Moon during the partial lunar eclipse phases. And then Eratosthenes did the shadow and stick thing and came up with a pretty good estimate of the radius of earth. >> What would happen if you "turned off gravity"?
There was some woo-woo nonsense that spread on Tik-Tok that gravity was going to turn off for a few second during the recent solar eclipse. Now, the current best theory of gravity is General Relativity, the Einstein Field Equations. Big 'G', Newton's gravitational constant is in there as a coupling constant. However, the mathematical form of the EFE does not allow for G to be anything but a constant. IOW, saying turning off gravity is a mathematical contradiction there. People have proposed something like a time-varying G, but to do that, you've got to add something else to the equations, making it different from GR. And, the more and more they look, the tighter and tighter the constraints on how much different the true theory of gravity can be from Einstein. If you approached masslessnes as a limit m-> 0, you will get a lot of acceleration for very little, almost no force. In a Newtonian world you could travel at near infinite speed. Hence the inertialess drive of some very early scientifiction stories. In Einstein’s world you could travel at near lightspeed. Put that in your bong and smoke it.

>> It's not absolute or constant, it changes based on how fast it's going, or how close it is to other masses.
That's the distinction between rest mass and relativistic mass. You can think of the mass of a particle as being multiplied by gamma. But that view is sort of problematic. Energy is mass and mass is energy via mc^2. And mass is inertia. Energy gravitates and has inertia. A box containing light bouncing back forth has more inertia than an empty box. And it gravitates. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at August 18, 2026 04:38 AM (w6EFb) 314
And it gets even more than that. In GR, the source of the gravitational field (which is the curvature of spacetime), is the stress-energy tensor. The math here, well, hoo-boy. But this means the source of the gravitational field is four things. Mass-energy, the currents of said mass-energy, plus *momentum* and the currents of that momentum. The momentum part means that gravity depends on *pressure*. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. That pressure term contribution goes as p/c^2. That is the mass equivalent of pressure. For most matter, that is vanishingly small. But when you get really, really dense objects, like neutron stars, that becomes significant. I haven't had gas bad enough to alter gravity in quite some time. Posted by: mikeski at August 18, 2026 04:45 AM (VHUov) 318
That pressure thing makes for a interesting runaway effect. Imagine a spherical mass distribution and you start packing more and more mass onto it, and you hold some constant density requirement (artificial, but this would be a perfect incompressible fluid). Now, as you pile more and more mass on it, the pressure in the center increases. But, that pressure increases the gravity. So the pressure required to resist the gravity increases the gravity even more. The result is that for a spherical mass distribution of constant density, the radius can be no less than 9/8 of the Schwarzschild radius. At that point, the pressure at the center goes to infinity. 191 Meniere's Disease
Posted by: m at August 18, 2026 05:47 AM (odBC9) Posted by: m at August 18, 2026 05:48 AM (odBC9) 324
